Jack's "Hippie" Songs
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:55:07 am »
Gary said I was a hippie at heart  ;D I must say I do like the meaning and the sound of many of the songs that would fit into that mode. There seemed to be a hope expressed there that is hard to find anymore. Here is the first one.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone by The Kingston Trio

The ultimate hippie song....by Scott McKenzie

SAN FRANCISCO....BE SURE TO WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're goin' to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summer time will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation
Such a strong vibration
People in motion

There's a whole generation
With a new explanation
People in motion
People in motion

For those who cometo San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summer time will be a love-in there

If you come to San Francisco
Summer time will be a love-in there

Sung by the Small Faces.....

Itchycoo Park
Small Faces

Over bridge of sighs to rest my eyes
In shades of green
Under dreaming spires, to Itchycoo park
That's where I've been

What did you do there? I got high
What did you feel there? Well I cried
But why the tears there? Tell you why
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful
it's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
While I search for fun in the sun

I tell you what I'll do (What will you do?)
I'd like to go there now with you
You can miss out school(Won't that be cool?)
Why go to learn the words of fools

What do we do there? Well get high
(What will we touch there?) We'll touch the sky
But why the tears there? I'll tell you why
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind .......

It's all too beautiful

Hope you dont mind me indulging myself, with these songs......I am a child of the sixties.....

Who can forget the stage musical.......HAIR..

and these song from it......

HAIR......by the Cowsills

She asked him why
Why I'm hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and nighty-night night
My hair is a fright
I'm hairy high and low
But don't ask me why
'Cause he don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
Darlin...

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer hair
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

I can let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home for the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for the buzzing bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight and curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, steaming, gleaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Mangled, tangled, spangled
And spaghetti!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself
Don't never have to cut
'Cause it stops by itself

Oh, gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

And won't you give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer hair
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

Hair!....

And of course this one.....

AGE OF AQARIUS.....by the 5th Dimension

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
The Age of Aquarius
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

Thanks Katie!!! I am glad you included all of these songs. You are definitely right "San Francisco" is the ultimate "hippie" song. It is also a great song. I have listened to it often especially after visiting San Francisco in September. Whatever the feeling that song gives is the same feeling visiting the city gives.

Can I tell you a story about when my husband and I went to see Hair?  (well I'm going to)

It was July 1970, at the Metro Theatre in Sydney...we had got to the theatre about 15mins before the show was due to start. Hubby said, "you go and buy the tickets, while I go and park the car". I walked up towards the ticket office, and was approached by two American marines (at the time there were a lot of American servicemen in Sydney, on R&R leave from Vietnam). They asked me if I was going to see the show, and I told them I was just about to buy some tickets for me and my husband.....they handed me two tickets, and said, "here have these"...apparently, they had bought four tickets, expecting to meet up with another couple, and they had not shown up.

We sat beside them in the theatre, and asked them if they would like to have a drink after the show, but unfortunately, they did not return after intermission.  In hindsight, maybe the anti-war message in the show, was probably not what they needed to or wanted to be entertained by.

The show itself was quite "shocking" for those times, and even more so, for us nieve Aussies......especially the final segment where all the cast took off their clothes, and asked the audience to join them on stage. From what I remember, only a two or three people accepted the offer.

I too, have the soundtrack, and love the music, and it always brings back the memory of when we went to see it.

Oh.......and something else, our first son was born 9 months later.....so it was an extra special good night.

HAIR......by the Cowsills

My favorite line from this song is in the stage and movie versions but not the Cowsills'. . .

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined
Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah, I adore it
Hallelujah, Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

I read somewhere that this part was controversial, which is why the Cowsills left it out of their version.  Since their mother was part of the group, I reckon maybe she had something against the line too.  You know, not wanting her kids singing about her not loving them and all.

AGE OF AQARIUS.....by the 5th Dimension

Somebody did a great remix of the 5th Dimension version of this back in the mid 90s.  My most favoritest of theirs is "One Less Bell to Answer."

I love Hair - have the soundtrack from the stage show, and know most of the songs by heart.  Always wished I was a child of the 60s, but had the misfortune to grow up in the 70s and 80s.

Oh, honey.  Me too.  When I was a teenager, I was all about the 60s.  I listened to the music and wore the clothes.  I was such a poseur.

I love "Hair" too.  My favorite songs are the lesser known ones:

- Sodomy (So nasty!)
- Colored Spade (I sing along to this one but not too loudly.)
- My Conviction (Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-ct. . . ually. . .)
- Frank Mills (So lovely.  I pass the Waverly Diner a few times a week, and it often reminds me of this song.)
- Walking in Space (The first party is beautiful, but I like the "Red, white!  Blue, brown!" freak out at the end.)
- Abie Baby (Emancin-muthaf**kin-pator of the slaves!)
- Three-Five-Zero-Zero (A whisper to a scream.)

But my absolute favorite -- and one of my theme songs - is "Black Boys/White Boys."

Oh.......and something else, our first son was born 9 months later.....so it was an extra special good night.

Sounds like it was a memorable night!  My first time seeing "Hair" wasn't as memorable.  I went to see it with a lesbian, and, since I'm a gay guy, there wasn't nothing going on there.  We saw our university's student production of the show.  I think there was some rumblings about a protest, but I don't recall there being anything of the sort.  Probably just a bunch of talk.

I do remember that one guy wore a body suit in the nude scene.  I think the others stripped down to underwear or something.  I remember that it was a good, well-done show but not much else because my friend and I altered our consciousnesses before we went.  You know, to get into the spirit of the show and all.  We used to love theme nights!

I remember more clearly watching the movie version.  My grandfather had Cinemax, and I saw that the movie was playing on that channel one weekend when I was home from school.  I asked it I could watch it at his place, and he said yes.  He watched it with me and seemed to enjoy it.  He had to have been in his late 70s or early 80s.  He was always cool that way.  Very easy going and accepting.

Treat Williams had the lead in the movie.  While I don't usually go for guys with long hair, he was hot!  With him, his hair doesn't matter to me.  As long as he has ears for me to grab to pull and keep him closer to me, it's all good.

I think the movie has more of a story than the play.  The ending of the movie killed me.  I remember feeling kinda sick about what happened.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE.....Peter, Paul and Mary

Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Gone to young girls, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone to young men, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young men gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone to soldiers, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

And where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, a long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, every one!
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

And where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one!
When will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn

Hey, Jack.  Do you take requests?  If so, let's have the Yardbirds' "For Your Love," Max Frost and the Troopers' "Shape of Things to Come," and some Mamas and Papas!

Who can forget the haunting music to the song by Procol Harum....

I'm still not sure what the words were all about, but the music got into your soul.

A WHITER SHADE OF PALE

We skipped the light fandango
And turned cartwheels across the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
Whe we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
Would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
At the moment my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Love this song too.

I think this part refers to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales:

"And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale"

Not sure about the rest, other than the Vestal Virgins coming from Roman mythology.

Usually I like to understand lyrics, but sometimes a haunting melody is enough.

As with a lot of the hippie songs of the sixties.....I think the lyrics depict that the singer is on some kind of hallucinatory drug, LSD being the flavour of the month back then.....

And then we had the angry protest songs......

EVE OF DESTRUCTION
Barry McGuire
Schreibr Sloan

The eastern world it tis explodin',
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you see the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be noone to save with the world in a grave,
take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
handful of Senators don't pass legislation,
and marches alone can't bring integration,
when human respect is disintegratin',
this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',
and you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Tehn take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
but when your eturn, it's the same old place,
the poundin' of the drums, th pride and disgrace,
you can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace,
hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace,
and you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Katie mentioned this song and posted the lyrics. I have heard of the song before, but for some reason I didn't put the song with the title. Yes, this is no doubt a great "hippie" song and a great song too. I have also heard of the group Small Faces many times. In looking for this I discovered that one group member went on to start another group Humble Pie and the another became the drummer for the Who after Keith Moon's death. Two of the other members teamed up with Rod Stewart to form the group Faces. The song is:

And for dedications, yes I take dedications, this is one of the BEST songs that has ever been made. I'm sure I have said this many times on here, but one of my biggest dreams since I was a little kid was to visit California. Everybody always said I was making a bigger deal out of it than it was. In fact many said I would be very disappointed. Well last September I finally made it to San Francisco and I loved it as much as I always thought I would. I hope to make it to Los Angeles this summer and hopefully back to San Francisco too. One day I hope to live in California. This song and the song San Francisco have the feeling to them that had always been to me what California would feel like and it did. So here is:

California Dreamin' by The Mamas and the Papas

OH Jack, what a trip down memory lane those clips were. I felt like a 16yr old again.

I have not seen the clips before but have the songs downloaded from Limewire. I made myself a CD of just all those 60's songs, and when I sit back and play it, I drift back to my youth and carefree days, in an instant.

I received this link a while back which give you music songs from 1950-1984.....pick a year, click on a song, and the songs will play in the background on your puter while you are doing other stuff...Just click on one song, and the rest will play radomly and automatically.

I remember hearing many of these songs when I was little, but I was too little to ever be a real hippie or truly understand what was happening. This thread is proving to be real interesting to me because I am now getting more of a sense of what these songs were saying, what they meant. When I started the thread it was kind of a reply to Gary when I posted a song from the 60s on his thread. I always have liked the sound of the music from that period of time, but I am developing a deeper understanding now. It is also interesting to compare this music to my other thread where I am posting early dance "disco" music right now. When you think that there really aren't that many years between the two it becomes very interesting. It seems that things went from kind of a peaceful "wild" to completely wild in what was really a short time span.

And here's another request that was made and another song I was not real familar with, but had heard of. It has in fact been remade by several other groups including Audioslave. The title is:

Shape Of Things To Come by Max Frost and the Troopers

And the lyrics are:

There's a new sun
Risin' up angry in the sky
And there's a new voice
Sayin' "we're not afraid to die"
Let the old world make believe
It's blind and deaf and dumb
But nothing can change the shape of things to come

There are changes
Lyin' ahead in every road
And there are new thoughts
Ready and waiting to explode
When tomorrow is today
The bells may toll for some
But nothing can change the shape of things to come

The future's comin' in, now
Sweet and strong
Ain't no-one gonna hold it back for long

There are new dreams
Crowdin' out old realities
There's revolution

OH Jack, what a trip down memory lane those clips were. I felt like a 16yr old again.

I have not seen the clips before but have the songs downloaded from Limewire. I made myself a CD of just all those 60's songs, and when I sit back and play it, I drift back to my youth and carefree days, in an instant.

I received this link a while back which give you music songs from 1950-1984.....pick a year, click on a song, and the songs will play in the background on your puter while you are doing other stuff...Just click on one song, and the rest will play radomly and automatically.

Thanks Katie!!! I will definitely check this link out. I'm glad you are liking the thread and I'm glad you are contributing to it too. I would love to hear the CD you made. I bet it is great. There is definitely a good feel to the music.

Jack

Yes the sixties were very different from the two decades before and after....We had rock n roll in the 50's and then disco in the 70's, but the 60's was different....it seemed we just wanted some peace. The youth of the day were faced with the Vietnam war as well as the assasinations of the Kennedys, and Martin Luther King, and they seemed to be asking "why is all this happening?". The music was more about the words than how good it was to dance to.

Remembering the Kennedys and King....heres a very poignant song about them.Simple words, with a message.

Abraham, Martin and John....by Dion

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free,
Someday soon it's gonna be one day.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin and John.

Yes you are right. The music wasn't about whether it was good to dance to or it had a good beat. It was all about what was being said. Wonderful song Katie and I found a video of it. Here it is:

This song sure does seem like it would be a hippie song, but I'm wondering if it may actually be older since they are dressed in suits and the girls dancing around are more like cheerleaders. It would definitely fit psychedelic, but I'm not completely sure if psychedelic necessarily means hippie. Ok now this is getting confusing. I saw this song listed as being something that would fit on my thread, but after watching the video I'm not quite sure  :-\ And the words aren't very deep either  ;) If anyone has any thoughts on that please post them. I do not want to get hit over the head with a bong or anything  :)

Psychotic Reaction by Count Five

And the words:

I feel depressed, I feel so bad
'Cause you're the best girl that I ever had
I can't get your love, I can't get a fraction
Uh-oh, little girl, psychotic reaction
(shouted) And it feels like this!

[Instrumental break]

I feel so lonely night and day
I can't get your love, I must stay away
I need you girl, by my side
Uh-oh, little girl, would you like to take a ride, now
I can't get your love, I can't get satisfaction
Uh-oh, little girl, psychotic reaction

[Instrumental break]

[Fade]

I'm really not sure about this one either  ;)

I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night by The Electric Prunes

Last night your shadow fell upon my lonely room
I touched your golden hair and tasted your perfume
Your eyes were filled with love the way they used to be
Your gentle hand reached out to comfort me
Then came the dawn
And you were gone
You were gone, gone, gone

I had too much to dream last night
Too much to dream
I'm not ready to face the light
I had too much to dream
Last night

The room was empty as I staggered from my bed
I could not bear the image racing through my head
You were so real that I could feel your eagerness
And when you raised your lips for me to kiss

Came the dawn
And you were gone
You were gone, gone, gone

Oh, too much to dream
Oh, too much to dream
Too much to dream last night
Oh, too much to dream

Ooh, I like this one!

I like that one too and from that group came Ted Nugent who later did well by himself. He also made a statement many years after that saying he was very conservative and that he had never even smoked a cigarette. Hmmmmmm.....I'm not so sure what to think about that

Great vids Jack.....I'm havig a great trip down memory lane watching them....

I didn't realize back then, just how far "out of it" a lot of those groups were. And I think now of my innocence, singing along to those songs, completely unaware of the hidden references to "getting high" and "tripping"....I didn't have a clue.

Dont know what to make of the Count Five group or that song....maybe they wanted to show a "cleaner" image....and the song is a bit of a "nothing" song.

Oh yes.....I love that song..."Puff the Magic Dragon"...and I found the story in the words quite sad, as I thought of a little boy and his imaginary friend Puff....until  "Jackie" grew up and didnt need his childhood "friend" anymore.

Then years later, I read that the song was about drug taking and hallucinary trips, and I was flabergasted.

No matter what,  though, when I hear the song now,  I still have the picture of the little boy and his imagineray pet dragon.

I have heard this about the song being about drugs, but I read the words very closely and I do not believe they are. It is obvious that they are about a child's imagination and how when he grows up that imagination is lost. He no longer believes in dragons. It is actually quite a sad song. It is also deep if you begin to think about all that goes along with the loss of imagination. I believe at certain times people have found every song imagineable about drugs or something similar. It is also funny that on my "Ramblings" thread Shasta and I have been talking about the imaginations we both had as children  :)
