Somehow, seeing Jack smile is fun for me.

Seeing Ennis smile more so?

Au revoir,
hugs!

Yeah, seeing Jack smile's fun. And Ennis teasing him about his harmonica playing (and then later teasing him about forgetting to bring it).

Hmmmm...what else? I love the scene where Jack is doing is "rodeo cowboy" impression and ends up falling over. Ennis banging on the tripod over the fire with the spoon(?) when Jack's singing "Water Walking Jesus". I like those fun bits.

If there's one thing I think the movie could have had more of, it would be the "fun" times they had together.

I agree though. Seeing Ennis smile is even better.

This movie was sort of short on fun moments, per se, I have to admit.  One moment I thought was rather funny was when Cassie doesn't take no for an answer from Ennis, and drags him out on the dance floor anyway when they first meet.  I mean, how many girls DON'T understand that when a man's gotta go pee, a man's GOTTA go pee.  Not like girls at all, in that sense.  Most of us have bladders the size of Texas.  I know I can go for several hours after that initial urge.  Anyway, back to the point, Ennis must have been at least somewhat intrigued by her bravado, if nothing else, cause there he was out there, doing his finest interpretation of dancing.  Let's face it, old Heath wasn't exactly twinkletoes in any of his movies, was he (A Knight's Tale, 10 Things I Hate About You)?  Anyway, that's one of the few "fun" moments I can recall.

And, of course, every time either of them smiled in each other's presence.  Definitely.

I find funny,or at least cute, the way Jack laugh in the scene of "Tent don´t look right".And the smitten glances they give to each other after Ennis says "what?".

Yeah, the "tent don't look right" scene always made me smile too, with Ennis fiddling around with it an keep adjusting it, and right of the end of that scene, as Ennis sits back down next to the fire Jack gives a grin - I like that.  :)

With the smitten glances after the "What?", especially with Jack, it's like you can see him thinking it's special that Ennis is finally talking to him like that.

Another bit that always makes me laugh, though it's not a "fun" bit, is when Jack arrives at Ennis's and the exchange between Ennis and Alma, just because it's such an odd thing to say:

Alma: You know, your friend could come inside, have a cup of coffee...
Ennis: He's from Texas.
Alma: Texans don't drink coffee?

I agree with Mandy21 though - the movie was short on the "fun" moments, and I think it could have done with a little more.

Should we be surprised that Alma did NOT off a can of those famous beans?

Would that have been more a joke as to lighten up that scene?
........

Do you think Ennis had told her about the beans?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO true.  I flew non-stop France to Texas and never went to the bathroom once.

What's fun for me are their early scenes together.  While they're together in their personal paradise of Brokeback.  Later, after, it's more bittersweet than 'fun'.

my personal favorite was when ennis said "we're supposed to gaurd the sheep , not eat 'em"
that always cracks me up.

and anytime ennis trips over stuff.  he was so clutsy. ;D

there was a thread over in imdb where someone posted a video of clips of jack being pissed off.  the video was called "twist of a bitch" and it was so funny how it was put together.  i wonder if it's still around....

I think I was a litle unclear in my post. The scene I refer to is after they leave the motel. They drive off together, then strip off ,and jump off the cliff into the water. One of them says, last one in. It just semed like I said, a moment of pure boyish fun.No inhibitions, just fun. Always makes me smile.

To that, wow, wow!! May two persons do that often! (I with others used to do something similar skinny dipping when young (girls and boys) after work but after midnight!) And may we continue to enjoy that as viewers too!

Did you now that that is NOT Jake with Ennis??

I love that too! It helps break up the sexual tension you know is about to occur in TS1. My other fav is Ennis ribbing Jack about his harmonica playing, I love seeing Jack's smile as he's laying on the ground about to begin playing it again.

Optom, you say:

.......

Yes, it was said to be a double for Jake, but why? Yes, Jake sure was OK body wise. So, I wondered often as to why the camera was so far, far away when those two men jumped in the lake/river; was it so we  would not see that it was NOT Jake?

As you said, it is fun to see them jump in... as is it was Ennis and Jack!!

...........

How often was this ribbing?

As you say:

I have to say it was fun just watching Jack do what he does best - bitch. :D
He complains about everything but it's so endearing that you want to hit him and hug him all at the same time.

And his harmonica playing - Ennis's comments are just as endearing. "You're gonna scare off them sheep!"

Ha, the sheep are funny too for some reason. There's so many!

Alright, I've had more than a good amount of coffee, that's for sure.

Thanks Mandy21!

I am sure that Shakestheground is shaking his sense of humour... to please us!

It could be that even in my FIRST viewing of the BM film, that I did NOT see any fun in it?

My straight brother got up so, so quickly when he saw Jack kneeling and Ennis was to play... that he advanced that scene... so I saw no sex action!! But I can not remember if he did advance too the kissing in the tent scene??

The BM movie remains dire for many as a drama or tragedy... and not much FUN in it?

What do you see as  some fun in it, scene or gesture or act, or ??

Hugs!

Ha, you're right Artiste! Coy is a good word - the second night in the tent, he WAS shirtless though we saw Ennis rubbing his hands in front of the fire. Seduction, anyone? Hm..

And more fun? Hmm... More cute and endearing but when they embrace after those years and they start to sway, then when Jack pulls back he's looking directly at Ennis's lips. Huzzah!

So much heartache and tragedy in the film, but also so much fun - but like everything else about the film, so subtle.

I dunno if this falls into the category of fun, more wonderment than anything, but the first five or so minutes of the movie is in complete silence?  :o That, my friend, is amazing cinema right there.

Yeah, that kinda sets the scene for Jack's bitching for the whole of the rest of the film. He's just so damned sweet though whatever he's bitching about.  ;D

Is it in Annie's story?

I don't think it is. From memory the story goes straight from the description of their upbringings to the conversation in Aguirre's office.

Artiste, for your BBM sequel perhaps a sidestory from Jack's POV?? With his thoughts  'Oh la la, a hunk' fits the category quite well!

And Jack's thoughts in general would be fun to listen to - oh, dear, if someone complains that much outloud imagine inside his head. I read a fanfic once that had Ennis bump his head off something and suddenly be able to hear people's thoughts - Jack's was pretty funny at times and at others, romantic and sad.

Yeahh! Everyone's thoughts as opposed to dialogue - let me know what you think. :)

Yes, that would be so great!! I wonder if Annie and/or the ss writers and/or others too are thinking about doing that??

For now, you give my a good idea: what do you say that we (you and I, and maybe others), do a short clip for now?? Like one for YouTube?? For one, two or three minutes??

You create the words... and you will  have them added to the images I will select either alone, with you and/or others?? FOR THAT start of the BM movie??

my favorite, enrichingly personal and yes, fun, scene/line was when Ennis was awaiting Jack's arrival after four years. His nervous pacing and beer drinking was engorged with anticiaption and youthful love. the climax was his line "....see if he shows" which not only underscored the height of his eagerness, but also the shadow of disappointment if Jack was not to appear. I could jump onto the screen each time I see that.

another FUN mini-scene for me was at camp when Ennis was still cook and camp guard. while cooking eggs one morning, crouching down abreast the fire, he lifts the frying pan of eggs and bacon toward Jack and utters the contraction "...h' y go".

he'd been silent and inward yet his face revealed his true interest in Jack's rantings and as a friend. This murmur "..h' y go" was so endearingly fun and an expression of serving Jack in the only way he knew he could at that point. Ever so fun and rich with joy.

;D Ha yeah and it's a friendly mock too - right before that he tells Jack that he can't be any more worse than him.

Another fun mini-scene, as you put it :), is the complete akwardness when Ennis introduces Jack to Alma after that particularly intimate kiss on the stairwell. Ennis has this didnt-make-out-with-nobody-though-I-look-it expression while Jack has this wide eyed, frazzled look. And Alma is just at a loss for words and looks like she could throw up. Akward yet entertaining.

Alright, I'll start it after dinner so I'll be back in twenty or so.

A question: Are we going to have the whole movie with thoughts or scenes from the movie, which are particularly important and need thought? Like the first meeting-and-subtle-checking-out scene.

Cheers!

That look of Jack's is just priceless, and Ennis is trying sooooo hard to look totally innocent. Just makes you want to hug the pair of them!  :)

Well, I think it'd be better if we go for the initially important 'main' scenes and see how that works out. And then we can push for the whole movie which, I warn you, will be a hard task. But I think we can handle it with the right amount of enthusiasm and sugar-laden coffee. ;D

....

Oh, damn, here I am thinking about it and maybe we could do the whole movie. Or...ahhr, I'm too excited already.  :-\ Hmm, well what are your thoughts on this? Should we do the main scenes or maybe the whole movie, and slice it into sections or 'acts'?

Both could be done and well, too, but time might not be on our side.

Cheers!

I think maybe a separate thread might be better. We could do it scene by scene and get everyone's different interpretations of the same scene before moving onto the next one.

The kissing scene at the bottom of the stairs (my fave ;) is almost just as hot in the book:

"A hot jolt scalded Ennis and he was out on the landing pulling the door closed behind him.  Jack took the stairs two and two.  They seized each other by the shoulders, hugged mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together, and hard..."

"From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking."

Heath and Jake, they brought the book to life, splendidly.

to me these scenes of intimacy and emotion were not so much "fun" in the sense of light hearted, humorous, casual or inherently common/quirky. Rather, they are hugely pivotal and emotional to me. but that's me! LOL

Another mini scene of "fun" to me was when Ennis started running after the supplies following the encounter with the bear. Ennis looked like a crippled old man running! I thought 'that boy needs to work out more and get in better shape!'. Very fun, especially after the bear thing which I was very nervous was going to do harm to Ennis.

I'm thinking the opinions/notations about the topic has nothing to do with making  "judgments" they way you refer. And even if they were, no need to remain silent just because we may not have fallen off a horse. It that were true, my good woman, your inputs about two men in love would have to stay in your pockets.  ;)

Sorry for any offense, HerrKaiser.  And thanks for calling me "my good woman", that was nice, are you British?  All I was trying to say is that I myself have fallen off a horse, and it's a long fall down.  Like rearview mirrors, horses are much bigger than they appear.  They're quite tall, and you can literally count the seconds as you're going down, trying to determine how best to fall so that you don't break your neck and die.  My ex-husband once ran into a laundry line on a horse, went flying off the back of him, broke his collar bone, was on hardcore pain medication for two months.  My point was simply that any one who falls off a horse is lucky just to be walking at all, let alone running away from a bear, as Ennis so valiantly attempted to do in order to save both the food and the animals.  Again, sorry if any offense.

no offense taken (only minor  :) ) and no apology necessary. but thank you.

I do understand the point you are making in the literal sense, but I did find Ennis' scamper to be a bit whimsical in appearance for a 19 year old young man, especially as the scene went from danger to quickly being light and funny with all the supplies strewn around and the mules beyond his control. Hence, the post regarding "fun" parts of the film.

___________________

another fun tidbit for me was Ennis' line "...only if I don't have to sing" when his little girls asked him if he'd be home in time for the church social. That was so rock bottom common and typical of a Dad jesting with his kids about such things. Loved his warmth and levity while knowing his mind was elsewhere.

Hell yeah! With you on that one friend!

I reckon there's just about only Jake and Heath that could pull that scene off and make it both intense and romantic.

Agreed. The film (and the story) IMHO was too short on both the fun and tender moments, though I guess as we've found there are a fair few fun bits in there, but very subtly done.

I know the Ennis staggering around trying to pick up the food and chase the horses wasn't supposed to be funny, but there was something vaguelly comic about it, though it was sweet in a way as well, the way he was trying to collect everything up so that Jack would have more than beans to eat for the following week. As usual, caring for Jack in the way only he could.

And add something similar:
Ennis is warning him (Jack)... that like Jack's horse (she has a low startle point), ... that he had also a low starting point to start LIKING JACK AS A FRIEND/BUDDY/LOVER/PAL... and Jack's struggling to get her to do what he wants. (... will also struggle with him ((Ennis))  to get him into a LOVE AND/OR SEX RELATIONSHIP - could that be like a forecast??

Is that fun too to think that?

Hmmmm....I'm not sure if it's a forecast as such, but I guess it could be taken as a metaphor for Ennis and Jack's relationship. Interesting observation.

Well from the start, right from when they arrive in Aguirre's yard Jack's behaviour is bordering on flirting with Ennis, in the way he keeps looking at him, and various scenes up on Brokeback where Jack looks at him in a certain way, holding the look for maybe just a fraction too long, and Ennis obviously picks up on that. Jack's quite clearly taking control when it comes to their relationship, and with FNIT, again it's Jack who makes the first move. The "low startle point"'s quite interesting too, because in their conversations it's very easy for Ennis to tense up, and clam up if the subject strays into something he doesn't want to talk about or something he's not comfortable with. It'd be interesting to know if AP intended that scene to be a kind of metaphor for their relationship, or whether it was simply Ennis already showing his protectiveness towards Jack.

Much fun!  ;D

As we've said before recently, the fact that for the first five minutes of the film at least not a word is spoken, but they convey so much just in the glances they exchange says so much - so much about Heath and Jake's skills as actors, as well as the relationship between Ennis and Jack. The shots where Jack's checking out Ennis in the rear view mirror while he's shaving are just so funny, and it continues from the jump-off where Ennis warns Jack about the horse having a low startle point - Ennis casts a few looks in Jack's direction when he thinks Jack isn't looking, and before Jack eventually manages to get the horse under control and set off, he turns and glances at Ennis again. This one I think is the shot where he turns back to look at Ennis, and there's another one, one morning when he's setting off back to the sheep where he does a similar thing. This one though is the one after it, and Ennis is definitely checking him out!

Probably the funniest though is when Ennis strips off and starts washing, and Jack's by the fire peeling potatoes trying not to look. You can tell he soooo wants to look, and he's kind of looking our of the corner of his eye while he's supposed to be concentrating on the potato!

Yeah, I guess Jack's looks and his flirting is kinda fun. There's just something in those looks that's sort of teasing Ennis, and trying to get some sort of response out of Ennis. I guess it works too, because I was thinking yesterday about FNIT and about how when Jack grabs his hand and he pulls away. I can't remember what he says, but it really doesn't take him very long at all to get over that initial shock and decide to take things further.  I don't think he'd have reacted that way if he hadn't already been aware of Jack's flirting and been thinking about the implications of that, even if on a sub-conscious level, although I suspect that he'd possibly consciously been aware of it.

I think the whisky is actually quite important.Initially Ennis drinks from his cup,but as the 2 become closer they just swig from the bottle, passing it from one to another.Ennis I think drinks from a cup the night of the bear incident. The next time we see them drinking they are bonding more and sharing the bottle.
I also think the whisky literally loosens Ennis up a bit,he becomes more talkative, smiles, and of course eventually becomes so drunk, that we have the wonderful TS1.
Whisky continues to form a part of their fishing trips.
I sometimes wonder, after the initial uncontrolable passion of the reunion kiss, where the physical takes over completely, whetherEnnis maybe needs a couple of drinks to loosen up and cope with the permanant guilt he feels.
He treads a thin line always between what he feels, and what he allows himself to feel.It could be that the whisky, and in a later scene, the joint, relax him sufficiently.to allow himself to "feel".
I am sure lots of us have used booze to relax us for many reasons.

So with the audience, it is NOT seen as funny parts... is booze??

But Ennis and Jack sees it as fun??

Hugs! When I see booze, I am always figuring: not funny,  since I have seen too many of my friends died now from it!! I guess I rarely see boozing as fun!! ??

I can agree with that. Lureen says of Jack "he drank a lot" I think for Jack and Ennis whisky was a coping mechanism. With Ennis it loosened him up.freeing him somewhat. With Jack I think it was more drink to ease the pain.
Within the context of the film,I do feel there are some light hearted alcohol moments, such as Ennis stumbling over the pans. But on the whole I think the alcohol reveals deeper sadness than joy.As is often the case.It fills a an aching gap for both men that,Ennis will not allow himself to occupy.

Fiona (optom) may I agree.

To me since I am an artist-painter, what images comes to mind are these:
clowns -
a- they clown around with booze, giving a smile, but deep inside each is sad, unfortunately, most times!!
And they get to be more sad EVEN TOGETHER since booze makes one that way!! Booze gets you into deeper depression, but people think otherwise - a duality comes in the picture!! ??

b- also, Jack likes to be a special clown (and knows that as a tool as many alcoholics do) : a jester or a buffon (in French)?? Since, he is accustomed to booze (even before seing Ennis for the first time, maybe?) As a jester, he can entertain Ennis; Jack falls, trips, amuzes Ennis!! As to become a boon companion to Ennis!! Un bon vivant!! Full of life!! It shows too Jack's bounteous nature: generous, caring, amuzing, etc., to hide his sadness!! ??

So the clown role of Jack is funny?

I agree, the classic image of the clown or buffoon, with his painted on smile hiding a sad heart. It is not a coincidence that so many kids are scared of clowns.Mine certainly used to be.There is something achingly sad almost ghoulish about them.Kids see things as they are and so are frightened. On the surface Jack clowning around is light hearted but I think hides a deeper sadness.Superficially it is funny, scratch deeper and it is truly deeply sad.
And yes just as the drinker use alcohol to mask his feelings so we have the anology with the clown and his mask.In the film all combine, the clown, alcohol and the ache.Jack initally uses his clown act to mask his true feelings for Ennis, which he has already acknowledged to himself. It is also an opportunity to introduce some levity to the situation, and try to break down some of Ennis's barriers.
Laughter is the best medicine, and it could be argued that Ennis is sick.Plagued by guilt for what he is starting to feel.So Jack tries to make him laugh. Also many people use alcohol as "medicine"
So many analogies.Clowns, masks, laughter, alcohol, medicine, all are intertwined so very subtely and so cleverly by Proulx.

A very valid point. I've always looked on Jack as the more optimistic of the two of them (sweet life, and bluebirds and whiskey streams and all that), but I think his laughter and his humour maybe do mask a deeper sadness. Thinking of him life that he reminds me of an ex of mine - always the life and soul of parties, always playing the clown, and cheering other people up, but that was all an act. I was one of the very few people whoever saw beneath that mask, and even when it was just the two of us, so often that mask was firmly fixed in place.

Wasn't Periot, the sad French clown the "original" clown?

Speaking of clowns, it's also reminded me of the scene where Jack makes a pass at the rodeo clown. Jack's whole expression and his demenour in that scene is subdued, and sad somehow, and of the two of them I guess it's Jack who's the real clown.

Quote

Again, I totally agree. Jack is very perceptive in reading Ennis's moods up on the mountain, and he always seems to know the right words and the right actions to make Ennis smile. He does "act the clown" a lot - when he does his rodeo cowboy impression and Ennis that sets Ennis off laughing so hard that the screenplay describes it that they "both laugh so hard, they almost cry", when he does his "Oooooeee!" when Ennis shoots the deer...Jack's always there with his one-liners giving Ennis the punch line and a chance for them to laugh and break the tension.

Again, alcohol often is a form of medicine. I know recently when I got some bad news about my health situation, the first thing I did that night when I got home was crack open a bottle of vodka and pour myself a damned big vodka and tonic. With one of the drugs I'm on in particular I shouldn't really   drink alcohol, but needed to chill out, and it did the trick. In the same way Jack and Ennis need the whiskey to break the tension between them. I think probably in the story, on the mountain alcohol was probably more of a "medicinal" prop in that it allowed them both to relax more, and although I think there was sadness in both of them, I think it was probably only later on when alcohol became more than just something to help them chill out. Lureen's "he drank a lot" suggest that for Jack at least, his coping mechanism was more than just an occasional prop in later years, and the fact that she mentioned it to Ennis suggests that it was something fairly significant in his life. With Ennis though we don't see him drinking a lot through the years. His sadness eats at him in different ways.

Damn! How did a thread about fun things get so depressing?  :-\

Bliss, you bring up a good question! Do you suppose that sadness is the other side of the blade of happiness?? I do not know how to phrase it otherwise... right now!
............

At the beginning of the movie, which one is more sad? Ennis or Jack?

At the beginning of the movie, which one is more happy? Ennis or Jack?

Is that hard to say?

At least, it is fun to see Jack cruising... right away Ennis?

And is Ennis having fun being cruised?

Hugs!

Fiona and Bliss, you've made some brilliant observations / analogies, especially with the clowns and masks, I love that one.  Never occurred to me before, but it's dead on.  I think they both wear masks, but that Jack feels freer to take his off a bit more than Ennis does.  Alcohol as a way to relax, and later, for Jack, as a way to numb.  Also loved the comment above about the switch between Ennis accepting the whiskey in a cup (love the way he says, "ank you"), vs. later sharing from the same bottle, and sharing the same joint on their final night.  Definitely a step of intimacy and trust in a person, wanting to get closer to them somehow.

All very great thoughts for a Monday morning, ladies, thanks!  ;D

Mandy, and laughter is also a way to be happy??

There is a French-canadienne out west like in the prairies who had started a laughter club, did you hear?

And now it's in many countries!

Maybe that would have been good for Ennis and Jack, and...

what do yoiu think?

At least, Jack tried laughter!

Did Ennis for fun too?

I guess sadness is the other side of the blade of happiness. They do say that without the bad times we wouldn't appreciate the good. I guess that's true for all of us. Some of us though tend to find that we get more than our fair share of sadness - that was certainly the case for Ennis and Jack. There's a kind of bitter-sweet feeling to their romance though. They were apart so much of the time over the years, yet the times they had were all the more precious because of it. At the end, Ennis is left with great sadness, but also lots of memories of the good times and the special bond they shared - again, a double-edged sword.

Hmmm...the beginning of the movie. Neither of them strike me as particularly happy or sad. Annie says, "...both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life." I guess if anything there was a slight sense of sadness about them both, but neither I think had any expections. They were both looking for work and just happened to come together at Aguirre's. Ennis was expecting to marry Alma - I guess it was the expected thing for him to do. It's difficult to guess at what his feelings for Alma were, because at that stage in both the SS and the film we're given no clues. His brother and sister though had both married, and I guess that's what he was expected to do. In that society, early in the '60's, that would be what was expected of him.

Jack's a different matter though, and I think clearly right from the start he's looking for something. He comes from the desolation of Lightning Flat, and I think he's desperate to escape from that life. When they were in the bar in the afternoon after they met at Aguirre's office, Annie says, "he was crazy to be somewhere, anywhere else than Lightning Flat." I think that comes across clearly right from the start, and he's clearly attracted to Ennis.

That first exchange of glances though when they're outside waiting for Aguirre to show up though is fun, Jack's subtle glances. I'm not sure whether Ennis has picked up on it at that stage though. I don't think he has.

At the beginning of the movie, so you think that both are stoic then and there as Annie portraits them?
Ennis is stoic, and Jack too?? But that changes quickly?? Is there fun starting to that change that stoic coldness?

Bliss, may I say that Ennis does re-act to Jack's intense FIRST look at him!! Right??
And Ennis moves his head down... but feels that Jack is STILLL glancing at him??
And so, Ennis looks shy way to Jack and is starting to change... like this is now becoming FUN to him??

Isn't there some INNER fun by BOTH??

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that bit where Ennis puts his head down. I guess he has noticed. You may be right, I think there is something subtle changing in how they react to each other.

Another thing I've just noticed is when they're walking down the street in Signal to go to the bar - Jack's the one in front. Already he's leading the way. The screenplay's quite specific about that.

I remember!!!! it is ingrained on my brain for ever, when they jump naked off the cliff into the lake. The single most uninhibited moment of pure childish joy,in the whole film.Just wish I had got to see more in close up!!!! and for longer.
It happens before dreams die and hope is lost.Ennis is still caught up in the joy of the reunion, and the guilt has yet to kick in a major way.For Jack there is the posibility ahead of a few days in which to convince Ennis of the "sweet dream"

No Jake used a body double,no idea why.Personally if I was male and had a physique like his,I would take every opportunity to show it off.In fact I would be down in the south of France at one of the many nudist beaches, tanning every square inch.Obviously with factor 50 sunscreen though,to protect the vitals from sunburn.
Fun for the viewers, well certainly for me, for the actors,I guess it depended how cold that water was,and how hot the sun.Maybe that is why Jake used a double and we had no close ups, doesn't cold water cause shrinkage of the male organs.

That last sentence of yours... sure makes me laugh... and laugh, that I am chocking with joy!!

I will not dare answer you on that one!! Maybe another male or gay will??

Maybe your question is a sense of humour of the BM movie... in disguise, oui, oui, as disguised??

FUN from the director?? Or from whom??

Hugs! P.S. That reminds me about some stories about my past lover!!

Now you have got me interested, the cold water, sunburn(ouch) or other?
It's alright you don't need to tell.I am sure my imagination can conjure up some interesting scenarios. In fact I think I will have that as my bed time thought.
Might make a couple of character substitutions, say Ennis and Jack.
Goodness me bed time is becoming more attractive by the second.

Fiona (optom), now you bring up an interesting question:
was bedtime  fun as to MORE or LESS for both Ennis and Jack in bed with each other.... as the years were PASSING ??

Do you know,I would guess more fun.firstly they knew each other better,so would have known what each other "liked" but saw each other infrequently enough,to still have all the excitement, of the 1st couplings. The SS,at the final meeting talks of the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings.Sounds pretty exciting still to me.

We see the 2 in bed or tents, 3 times only, way too little,TS1,TS2 and the motel. And to be honest the motel is more apres, TS2 is pre,so strictly speaking that leaves us with TS1.Way way to little!!!  I guess they thought the public was not ready for more.As for me they could have filled the whole film and I  still would have wanted more.

Now your analogy of soldiers charging makes me think of weapons, what do you make of that Artiste? I can see a whole new topic there.Soldiers charging with their weapons.I had always taken it to mean a charge, as in electrical current.Still exciting,a surge of power almost like a shot or a jolt. But your interpretation, certainly adds a whole new, and I might say interesting dimension.Time for some iced water I think!!!

Tu dis:

......
Fiona (optom), I assure you that you made me laugh again, merci/thanks, and may I agree with you that more sex scenes would have been great!!
But... like you say, maybe the producers feared placing more that 3 sex scenes!
On that:
Did I mention to you what my straight brother did about such one of the sex scenes??

............

Concerning you question:
Now your analogy of soldiers charging makes me think of weapons, what do you make of that Artiste?

Fiona, to that, I do not think that I had thought of this: that like some soldiers as in the serie Rome on TV lately, Ennis and Jack in the BM movie... used their penis as weapons like some Romans did - one leader made his whole group of soldiers stop while he was backdooring a female he just seen on the road - so that was like a weapon !! Some eat a penis, some romans were eating too testicals, they showed!! This makes me dizzy, and pray that I keep my jewels safe from such terror!!

But, remembering just now that is what happened to one of the two tough of gay birds men, his sex was taken away, unfortunately!! So even to-day, barberous things happen in islamic as well as in our so-called democratic countries!! Unfortunately!

Sorry for the sad notes!! That murder of a gay man and maybe of Jack too by murderers, are not fun scenes for me; maybe to some crasy person(s) they are??

...........

At least, sex scenes in the BM movie are fun ??? All or one of them??

Or any other scene or objects used??

Au revoir,
hugs!

Speaking about penis...I've always found fun-and tender-the way Ennis enters in the tent on their second night together; with his hat covering his (how do you say this? crotchal?) zone,as if he feels embarrassed of discovering his own excitement.I find it deliciously naive... :-*

I guess that scene with Ennis with his hat on his crotch, entering the tent, is maybe funny ?? !!
I sure smile at that!!

Myprivatejack, you made me laugh and you have my thanks! You made my day happier!!

Have you seen some of Everybody Loves Raymond ? There is one of his shows where he places something in the microvwave, and he covers his crotch while the microvave is running; so does his brother, and when the father comes in, so does he!!! That is so funny!!

So maybe that scene with Ennis covering his crotch is supposed to be fun?? Maybe we are NOT suppose to see him with ONE ON?? Dare I ask!!  Do you or anyone know?

Well,I really hope nothing happenned to this family if the microwave runs too fast... ;)  Speaking about Ennis hat,I don't know if it's fun,or at least as we can understand this word...For me is tender and makes me smile, not laugh as crazy ;D It says how shy and unwilling at first of showing his deepest and innest feelings and reactions and he results naive for me...I'm glad I've made your day happier¡; it's good to make people happy, when everybody tries to make it saaaaaaad¡.  :(

I guess Heath had to show his hat on his crotch so not to laugh at entering? Or so Jake G. would not laugh?

I wonder if that fun placing the hat their on his crotch was Heath's idea??

13 takes!!

And what came before one was chosen, any were/was sex ACTION?

Was one or some: too obviously sexy as in the FIRST SEX scene?

And what came after?

I wonder which of the 13 ones, the director or so did use??

Was it for fun that Ennis used his hat on his crotch... and was that in all the 13 takes??

You or anyone knows?

Hugs!

I'd love to know that. I noticed the "hat over the crotch" thing tonight when I was watching a clip of the film and wondered the same thing (if that was intentional and whose idea it was)

I guess from a director's/technical point of view it would be a difficult scene to shoot, getting the feel of the scene right and choreographing it right for it to be acceptable to the film classification boards. Interesting, as you say Artiste though to know why 13 takes, and which of those they used in the end. It would be so funny if after 13 takes Ang said, "Right, well actually we've decided we like the first take best after all!"  :D

Nothing at all to do with FNIT, but I also remember reading somewhere that for the really sad scenes where she was crying Michelle/Alma, to make it more realistic for when she was upset, asked if Jake and Heath would kiss off camera, and they agreed to do it. Isn't it funny the strange bits of movie trivia you pick up while wandering around the web?

You say:

......

Bliss: Yes, that would be fun!!

And, may I add,  would it be so funny if after 13 takes Ang said, "Right, well actually we've decided NOT to have your hat on your crotch after all Heath" And I wonder what would Heath do, especially since he had been touching Jake G. and vice versa been touched so well and often during the 13 previous takes? Dare I ask? And imagine Heath who would maybe have to go to the washroom first to straighten out something, before the 14th take?

Wouldn't most straight, bi or gay males, be concerned of his appearance on camera after being touched and touching so often? Dare I ask that for fun?

Is that why both Heath and Ennis laughed concerning their talks about that scene?

..........

Sorry, but I didn't explained myself well enough; the 13 takes scene was not the SNIT (or Second Night In Tent) but the first one...it's to say,the night of their first sexual experience.Maybe in this case fun was greater...Specially,yes,if Ang had choosen the third or fourth take after all...  Speaking clearly, and as I'm not a man,but I guess difficult not TO MAKE IT REALLY IN THE END.For a simply question of frequent touches,I mean. ;D
And yes,Bliss,I've also read about Michelle's asking the boys to kiss; it was in the reunion scene, when she must feel painfully surprised for what she saw.In order to increase her feelings before camera-as she had already fallen in love with Heath-,she asked them to increase also their passion.During an scene that also,by the way, must be repeated some times more;you must heard it on Oprah interview, because Jake said it.And yes, both of them laughed a lot speaking about this. For shame or...? ::)

I really don't know how many takes needed SNIT...What I know is that Heath said once that there were moments when he didn't know what to do; and that was good, because it reflected better the insecurities, fears and shyness of his character.I think he referred to this scene, but it's logical that he felt a little uneasy-mainly if Ang gave them freedom to do as they pleased, you know what I mean...-and this situation was the same than Ennis could felt before Love's discovering.I don't know if it's fun,but a little morbid,no?. :D

I love it when Jack is pulling a sheep by it's back paws and he's screaming "F*CK AGUIRRE!", that's so funny. I like the "Texans don't drink coffee?" moment and when Ennis asks Monroe where Alma is and he answers "she's in the condiments aisle." and Ennis is like "what?" "Ketchup" "oh"

I like it whenever Jack is complaining and when Ennis trips over something but my favourite funny moment is when they're sitting by the river and they fight and Jack walks away. Ennis' little pot gets carried away by the water and he runs after it. For some reason that always cracks me up.

Yes, it's Renee without an accent if that's what you mean.
I'm from the Netherlands but I'm very proud to say that I understood you question in French as well ;D

I love the little funny moments in BBM. It may be a sad film but that doesn't mean that it can't be funny.

Merci Renee !

Yes, that Ennis phrase what are you doing... is fun for me too, as I see it as Ennis wants that fun too... and lets Jack make the first move , and then Ennis becomes agressive in his gesture since it's his turn to be so  sexual acting ??

Au revoir,
hugs!

Fun in the Brokeback Mountain movie is underlined ?

Or is it just like a sub-plot ?

Yes, it's fun.

What I really enjoy is looking for all the little hidden things in the movie, the props and set dressing, and the little side comments that advance the story. I'm sure Ang and his crew made the movie to be watched over and over. Here's an example: in the wedding scene, Ennis is wearing a suit jacket and a pair of jeans, while his best man (presumably his brother K.E.) is wearing the pants of the suit.

I also have fun seeing the way ideas from the story were translated into the movie.

Maybe I am a Wyomingite at heart because, as Annie wrote, there, you have to "find your own fun."

Merci Front-Ranger !

It's great to read your post !

And maybe you can find out if that one standing besides him is his brother ?

And which person did buy those pants for the movie ?

And maybe which collector did purchase those pants that Ennis/Heath was wearing in that (his marriage) scene ?

You and everyone can have fun finding that out, maybe ?

I read that recently in an interview with, not the costume designer Merit who died, but the person responsible for keeping the costumes in the trailer on the set. I'll track down the information.

Merci Front-Ranger !

As you pointed out:
            Faces of Calgary Film
Calgary Herald
Published: Friday, April 18, 2008

- Name: Devora Brown

- Job: Costume designer/costume truck supervisor/stylist

- What do you do? "As a costume designer, I meet with the director and production designer to help figure out the overall look of the show, then buy and build the clothing. As costume truck supervisor I dress the actors."

- Largest number of costumes on one set: "On Jesse James we had hundreds and hundreds of extras -- they were dressing 500 people."

- Favourite wardrobe creation? "My favourite costume from a show was from Brokeback Mountain. The scene where Heath (Ledger) and Michelle (Williams) get married. Heath is wearing blue jeans and a suit jacket, and his best man is wearing the matching trousers of the two-piece suit. It is such lovely attention to detail."
........

But who said this ? Not Devora Brown, right ?

It is indeed a lovely way of showing that Ennis and his brother were so poor that they could only afford to hire one wedding suit which they then divided between the two of them. However, before reading this interview, I'd never spotted this lovely detail of the divided suit.

..........

But I don't see this as fun ? Or should it have been fun somehow for  Ennis to borrow his brother's suit jacket ?  I presume that his brother had already a suite since he was married before Ennis was ?

Maybe the fun came when either Ennis as the actor decided that it would be more fun to have his brother's suit jacket, and his brother to wear the bottom pants of it ?? Or who had that idea ?

Awaiting your news,
au revoir,
hugs!   Does anyone know if that rented suite was in the  movie script or Annie's story ??

I thouhgt I'd post the image of Ennis and KE (apparently KE) sharing one suit at the wedding.

I think that Ennis's wedding scene is interesting enough to warrant it's own thread... so I think I'm going to start one here in Open Forum in a minute!

I always smile at Ennis's "If I got lucky..." comment about the harmonica. Also, even though it's a sad scene, their last night at the campsite where Ennis talks of "putting the block to a waitress.." he's holding a Long Necked (phallic) bottle of "Old Rose" whiskey. It always puts me in mind of Aguirre's comment about "Stemming the Rose". Especially when Ennis puts it to his lips. I've always though that was some sly humor from the filmmakers. I smile too at the "I'm tired of your dumb ass missing". scene. When Ennis playfully shoves Jack it demonstrates his growing physical comfort with him. Sweet.

I think it´s just me, but i always giggle at one precise moment in the movie. It´s not even supposed to be funny. Like i said, it´s probably just me.

It´s the scene in the middle of the movie when Ennis and Alma argue and Ennis follows Alma down the stairs of their Riverton apartment. Ennis turns back to the apartment, stops, and ask his girls if "need a push or something." Ennis looks pouty, the girls look like the twins from The Shining and in that moment the very epic theme music starts to play.
And I start to giggle. Everytime. It´s the only point in the movie where I think they chose the wrong time to add music (and THAT music in particular), and instead it becomes funny.

Oh yeah,a classic scene!

Another scene where I often laugh is when Monroe cuts the thanksgiving turky, it really works to show what kind of person he is - practical, reliable, safe, boring
