Collections - What do you collect?
« on: March 28, 2008, 04:18:10 pm »

Most of us have collections of this or that.  Collections often grow out of our interests, remind us of our travels, or are items we just enjoying looking at.  What do you collect?

Here are a few of my favorite things:

Rocks and fossils - 2 of my favorite items are a megalodon tooth and a meteorite.

Dragons - I love a lot of these, but my most recent favorite is the lava dragon I brought home from the Italian island of Lipari.

U2 memorabilia - It is hard to select a favorite, but probably Bono's signed guitar, a holiday gift from my husband a while back.

Russian nesting dolls - The little ladies are all wonderful, but soldiers and sultans are among my more unique ones.

Refrigerator magnets - I try to bring one back from everywhere I go.  They are lightweight and portable.

I love dragons too! I have a dragon tattoo.

I don't really collect anything anymore but I used to have a nice coin collection. Took me about 20 years to amass. It was stolen last year by my brother. I don't have the heart to start a new one over again.

I collect Hummels. I only have about a dozen of them, but I think they are beautiful. I try to buy a new one each year as a birthday or Christmas present to myself.

I also collect toy cars. I used to collect model trains. I had about 20 different trains and a very large train layout (3 ping pong tables wide) with mountains, a lake three small towns and a couple of farms with animals and a small forest. The trains would wind through the mountains (built up against the back wall) and through the tunnels, and they were programmed to stop briefly at each town train station. The buildings all lit up and I loved running the trains in the dark. I could run 4 separate trains at once and I even had, and still do have the Autotrain which was popular in the 1970's and 80's. The Auto Train is the only model I still own. I sold the rest of my trains and scenery years ago.

I used to collect beer cans back in the 1970s. I still have a few of those too. :)

I used to collect wizard figurines, Susie. Nearly every one of them had a crystal up at the top of their staffs. Many times it was purple, but a few had a pink, green, blue or clear one. :D

I collect books by Edward Gorey.  I have quite a number of them now and I have two that are autographed (The Doubtful Guest and The Willowdale Handcar).  I like to try to find rare editions, etc. when possible. My parents own an original drawing, which I covet.  I'm more of a Gorey buff than they are, but they still like him well enough to have bought that drawing.  Back when my parents lived in Connecticut and in the times when I've interned in NYC, long ago, I also used to visit the Gotham Book Store in NYC on occasion to check out what they had in terms of collectibles.  My collecting of these things has fallen off a bit lately.  But, it's something I'd like to get back to eventually.

I collect coffee mugs from places I've visited.  I just started doing this about four years ago, so it's not a massive collection... yet.  When we serve coffee or hot chocolate everyone gets a different mug, which makes for interesting conversation.

I also "collect" Patricia Locke jewelry.  I love her designs!  :)

Oh, very nice!  Do you still have them?  My dragon plates also have wizards and crystals on them, and some of my larger dragons sit atop crystals.  My favorite dragons are my retired white Windstone dragon family.

I still have them, yes. They are packed away in boxes. I should get them back out sometime. A few of the wizards have a dragon next to them too! :)

Great collections!

Any interesting signatures?  We have signatures from a number of famous aviators and astronauts, plus some of the Star Trek folks.  Maybe some you have also?

Not historic flags, but a flag from every country either my husband or I have visited.  Still trying to figure out how to display them.

I've got TOS, TNG, and DS9 signatures from all the headliners. I've had a Shatner and Nimoy signature since I was 9 years old.

The flag display depends upon the height of your ceilings. I have sufficient space in parts of the house to hang an overhead display of some of the modern flags. My historical flags, some dating pretty far back, I have encased for protection and I display them on the walls.

not a great deal unless it can be documented to have flown at a time of national significance. example, I have an old 48er that flew over a federal facility in Honolulu on Dec 7, 1941, that can fetch some money.

a plain jane 48er, in good to excellent condition, can probably fetch you about 50$

Very cool that you have have Shatner and Nimoy's signatures since you were so young!  From Trek I only have Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, and Robert Picardo.  From real life space/aviation folk, I have Armstrong, Aldrin, Collins, Cernan, Glenn, Crossfield, both Rutans, and a few others.  Many of these are on space & aviation artwork adorning the walls of my home.

A little story, as an aside.  A few years back my husband and I were eating breakfast in Dayton, OH, where we were attending the "Inventing Flight" celebration.  We looked over at the next table and there was John Glenn having breakfast with his wife and another couple.  We didn't want to bother them during the meal, so we quietly arranged with our waitress to pick up the check for his table.  We considered it an honor.  Well, we were rewarded when, upon checking out, the hotel staff handed us a personal letter from John Glenn, complete with our names, thanking us.  What a class act!  He is one of my heroes.

We have about 40 flags, so it is a bit of a challenge.  We have a hangar with an 18 foot ceiling, and are trying to think of a way to hang the flags.  Still working on it.

interesting that you would mention Armstrong, I have his signature on my home church's church bulletin from back when I was a teenager. he was there that sunday as an out of town guest, and of course, I'm sure not shy so I asked.

Glenn is the first Astronaut whom I remember as a little boy. Your hangar may be ideal for hanging the flags if your can put in appropriate lighting. You just need some support cross struts to hang the flags from and you will be in business.

if it is documented with authentications then your 48er may be of value to a movie buff.

Thanks brokeplex!

I sold it to that movie house.

I was assured that it was to be in that Chicago movie.

So, I do not have it now... anymore.

But I got rid of the two who sold it for me; those 2 were trying to keep 90 per cent of the sale in order to go again get drugs in Afganistan!!

That film house or agent, also bought a female coat from me for the movie!!

But if anyone can see if that flag is in that movie, since I have not seen it, please copy.

And how to find out if the flag is for  sale now, or it was sold after the movie came out?? Or they gave it to a museum or someone is keeping it?

Au revoir,
hugs!

Armstrong is pretty reclusive.  You are lucky to have met him.  Some of the others I have met, but not Armstrong.

Have you read his book?  I really enjoyed it, enough so that I bought it for my whole family for the holidays one year.

We have rows of lights.  Some are very bright, something like metal halide, and the others are spots.  I think the lighting will be okay.  The support struts are probably the way to go.  Most of the flags are 3x5 ft, so they should by fine.  It is going to be a bit of a project.

he is indeed, I always thought that he could have been the Lindburg of the 1970s , but it didn't happen.

this was during the time after Apollo XI, and before he became a corporate CEO.

no, I haven't read Glenn's book, now that you have reminded me, I think I'll look it up.

3' x 5'? you have medium sized flags, you might be able to arrange them in some other way.

JMO, but I think Buzz Aldrin would have been a better choice than Neil as the first on the moon.  He so enjoys being in the public eye, and remains involved with space to this day.  First time I met him, it was at an outdoor dinner where I had had a glass of wine or 2 too many, and there was a gorgeous full moon.  I approached Buzz and asked him to be in a photo with me with the moon behind us.  He graciously obliged, but unfortunately many of the other diners liked my idea and I don't think he got a chance to finish his meal.

I highly recommend it.

I have been trying to figure this out for the past year.

it is puzzling that the Astronauts although lauded and respected, never became the celebrity heroes that aviators were in my dad and my grandfather's generations. my dad used to talk about the time he met Lindberg when he was a small boy, he still was excited about meeting and having his photo made with that man so long ago.

maybe we just don't have hero worship anymore?

May I say that we seem to become to worship now criminals like China murdering innocent persons in Africa so to get their free oil?

And China murdering Tibetans for nothing, just because Tibet is being overtaken by China not giving jobs to the Tibetans and using them as second class or worst!!

Isn't it weird that many liked Saddam Heissein even if he murdered many of his peoples?? And he is liked  still to-day ??

To-day, we seem to worship men degrading females, and gays, in the USA, Canada, etc., by the rap songs and TV ads using them as just SEX objects, and nobody seems to complain anymore?? !!

So now, persons are becoming like robots... like we don't care about humanity anymore ?? !! Even if thousands of gay men to-day are murdered by islamic governments, we don't want to talk about that neither!!

So now, human bodies are being collected for body parts (unfortunately even if healthy) so that the utmostly rich and powerful, even if they are murderers, can live longer!!

Sorry for the thruth!

Is it a form of collecting, right??

Maybe that is why we collect metal robots now?

Au revoir,
hugs!

Or maybe we have let the space program go into decline while aviation is still (kind of) going strong?  I think people do hero worship today, just the wrong heroes, maybe.   :-\

Lindbergh almost singlehandedly developed aviation as we know into a world-wide phenomenon.  Sure people know he flew the Atlantic, but I don't think many people today are aware that most airports exist because of Charles.  Without the airports, no flights for the populace.  I am probably preaching to the choir here.   ;D  You might enjoy reading the space and aviation quotes I have posted in my blog, including a few from Charles.

http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,18284.0.html

I am lucky enough to call one of his grandsons a friend, and hearing about Lindbergh's exploits from a member of his family is an awesome experience.

I think you are right that we are short on admiration today for people who are going out of their way to change the world for the better, true heroes.  Current society just seems more jaded.  Just look at the way we put down our presidential candidates for their little human slip ups.  History is full of presidents who did worse than our current candidates, yet no one belittled them.  People respected them for the big picture items.  I find it to be a sorry state of affairs.  None of us is perfect, and we shouldn't expect our leaders to be either.

you might want to go back and review some of the campaigns during the Gilded Age. It really is entertaining reading. You want to talk about dirty and mean!

1876,1888, and 1892 make our contemporary campaigns look like sunday school picnics. ( the "illegitimate" child of Grover Cleveland became a major campaign issue for the GOP to sling at Cleveland: one of their tactics was to hire a forlorn looking woman to stand up holding a baby "doll" at any campaign speech by Cleveland and start the crowd to chanting - "Ma, Ma where is Pa?  Gone to the White House, Haw, Haw, Haw!")

Antiques Roadshow is on before the news every week night here in Sydney.  I never miss it and always wait with eager anticipation for the valuations. I love the bug-eyed looks and gasps of amazement from the people in the background when the expert declares that some old plate or dish is worth thousands of dollars. And I love the stately homes, castles and town halls they televise from too. You get a little pocket tour/history of the UK each night.  Great show.

I collect figurines and sculptures of gods and  goddesses, primarily ancient Egyptian, but also ancient Greek, Buddhist and Hindu. I've just conducted a quick count and counted 53, but there are sure to be more lurking about in dark corners. That's quite a lot of gods and goddesses to squeeze into one small apartment!  ;)  :D

Hi,

I collect shot glasses with a place name. I started in 1986 and have about 220 of them. Whe a town I'm in doesn't have a souvenir shot glass, I settle for spoons also.

This is a cool thread, and I've finally taken pics of what I have to put here.  I have a lot of pics, so I'll be putting two in each post.

When my collecting started, my inner child was in control!    :D :D :D :D

My favorite cartoon as a child was "The Super Friends".  There was a bit of memorbilia/marketing stuff out at that time, but my parents wouldn't buy me anything.  Some of what I have now, I got off of ebay.  Other stuff was released on the 20th anniversary of the cartoon's debut.  Let's start with two 8X10 pics of the "core group".

From the debut season, 1973.  The "core group" was Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, and sidekicks/heros in training "Wendy, Marvin & Wonderdog".

From the 1976 season, after 3 years, Wendy, Marvin & WonderDog were replaced by the Wonder Twins (Zan & Jayna) and their pet monkey, Gleek.

The last 4 cels in the series, make me laugh.  The characters were created to make the cartoon "multi-cultural", so heros who were black, Native American, Asian, and Mexican were added.  However, their names were not originated from their powers, but from their race.

Last four shots, this is of a totally unique piece.

A few years ago, my younger brother was dating a very artistic woman.  She hand painted for me a group picture/plaque that lists all the characters on the cartoon.

Why the Madonna stuff?

My mom loves dance music, and I first heard of Madonna back in 1983 when her first single "Everybody" was getting airplay in the Tri-state area.

I've always been a big fan of hers, and have seen her twice in concert, the "Re-invention" tour, and her "Confessions" tour.

I have a ticket to see her in October for her next tour, "Sticky & Sweet"

I thought the same thing.  Those two items are not licensed merchandise.  I got them off ebay, I'm sure someone created them on their own.

SuperFriends went off the air in 1984, I doubt the kids today would even know who they are.  They know the same super heros as "The Justice League", a much more mature show, and Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog, and the Wonder Twins and Gleek are not on the line up.

I was watching a TV morning show, and they had a lady on who collects the little stickers off BANANAS.

Apparently she kept the collection secret for six years until she found a site on the internet with others who collect similar types of stickers.

I just expanded my Super Friends collection by three more items.

On the image it says "Ebay" as a watermark, that's not on the items I'm buying.

The Super Friends was a cartoon that debuted in 1973 featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman & Robin, Aquaman, and their "super heros in training", Marvin, Wendy & Wonderdog.  Each Saturday morning, the Super Friends battled various villians.

*side note*  In the center are Marvin, Wonderdog, & Wendy....they had no super powers, and were basically just sidekicks.*

In 1976, the show changed to "The All New Super Friends".  Same basic line-up, however, the original "Jr. Super Friends" were gone, and replaced with The Wonder Twins;   Zan, Jayna & Gleek.  The twins were a brother and sister from the planet "Exor" who were shape-shifters, Zan could become any form of water, and Jayna any animal.  However, they had to touch their fists together to "activate" their powers, and then come into contact again to "deactivate" them and resume their human forms.

The last item I'm bidding on is this image of The Legion Of Doom.  This was a group of villians who joined together to take over the world, and first appeared in 1978 when the series became "Challenge Of The Super Friends."

The line up, from left to right:

Lex Luthor:  Leader of the Legion of Doom Evil genius - highly-advanced weaponry
Brainiac:   android - Super-intelligence
Captain Cold:  Blue-suited master of low temperatures - Freeze ray
Giganta:  Ability to grow to 50 ft tall, super strength
Bizarro:  Twisted doppelganger of Superman,  Same powers as Superman, but often behaves in an erratic and irrational manner
Gorilla Grodd:  Super-intelligence, super strength
Cheetah:  Cat-like reflexes, claw-tipped gloves, heightened senses
Sinestro:  Renegade ex-Green Lantern - Yellow power ring
Riddler:  Uses riddles to taunt and confuse adversaries with while committing crimes - Puzzle creation, problem solving
Black Manta:  Enhanced strength, water breathing ability (through artificial gills), high tech equipment, laser beams
Toyman:  uses toy-based tactics to commit crimes - Creates destructive toys
Scarecrow:  Uses his fear gas to bring peoples' worst fears to life
Solomon Grundy:  A super-powered zombie born from the swamp - Great strength, invulnerability

As one might imagine from my blog, I've started collecting things related to the Lone Ranger, both the 1981 movie, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, and other items. I've obtained a couple of books connected with the movie, and also a kit that you could get as a premium from Cheerios.  (The kit arrived from its seller still sealed in its original envelope from General Mills; I'm afraid to open it for fear of damaging its value as a collectable, so I really don't know if it includes everything that it's supposed to contain!).

I'm also now the proud owner of LR and Tonto action figures (two different sets of both  ::)). I've also got a Silver for TLR and I'm currently "watching" a couple of eBay offerings of Scout, Tonto's horse.

I also picked up circa 1980 paperback issues of three LR novels by Fran Striker, the creator of the character, that were originally published, I believe, in the late 1930s.

The latest item to arrive is a DVD of LR cartoons from 1981-1982. (So, yeah, here I am, a middle-aged man who sat at home on a Saturday night watching cartoons! ) Interesting thing about these cartoons is that the writers apparently tried to ground the plots in "reality," both in terms of characters and geography. For example, the first episode involves a runaway train traveling between Grand Junction, Colorado, and Denver. Another episode involves the newspaper reporter Nellie Bly, who was a real person. Plus, apparently each episode ends with a mini history lesson related to the plot and delivered by TLR, who is voiced by the actor William Conrad, so there was an effort made to include some educational value as well.
"It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide."--Charles Dickens.

Great collection!  I also collect comics, but nothing rare or expensive.  Actually, I'm a collector by nature and collect so many things.  I've always collected gold bracelets, but now I'm collecting 14k bangle bracelets: I think they're the most classy, authentic things you can wear on your wrists.  I'm sporting an arm full of them, and sadly, I'm still paying for them. I'm also looking out for a new gold bangle to add to my collection.

Lately I´ve been wanting to get stuff related to favorite movies. I already got a bunch of Brokeback things of course. Now I´m waiting for my Thunderheart poster to arrive. I´m also looking to buy a Pump up the Volume poster (se below). Surely it must be a sign that I´m getting old, wanting to collect stuff from my past.

Heh. If you think that's bad, you should see how much time I'm spending now watching TV shows from my childhood and even from before that.  :-\

I haven't updated here for a while.

I have some stuff to add.

It is a collection of 100 post cards that replicate various DC Comics covers.  Some of the titles include:  Justice League, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Batman, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Teen Titans, and there even is a copy of Super Friends #1.

Here is a selection of some of the cards, I didn't take this pic.

It's hard to make out, but if you look on the upper right side of the heart, you'll see the cover of "The Flash", the card has a yellow band across the top.  To the immediate right of that card, is the Super Friends card.

My collection of Super Friends action figures.  A true collection would be "mint in box", but I found this in great condition, loose, on ebay.

1st Row:  Robin, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman
2nd Row:  Flash, Zan (wonder twin), Jayna (wonder twin), Green Lantern
3rd Row:  Atom, Samurai, El Dorado, Black Vulcan, Apache Chief
4th Row:  Hawkman, Cyborg, Firestorm, Hawkgirl

Two of the three items I won on ebay (am I the only one who still uses ebay> LOL) arrived recently. They're going on my wall, framed, but they're a bit of a curiosity.

They are group images of The Super Friends. They have the official logo, the "Tm" to show they're trademarked.

The line up is very similar to the one on the show, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Flash, and Green Lantern.

However, for some odd reason, Green Arrow and Batgirl are both added to the line up. Green Arrow as a guest star on one episode, in the very first season. Batgirl never appeared.

Same line up, different pose. Once again including Green Arrow and Batgirl.

I don't know if this line up was suggested at one point, and then scrapped, but it's pretty interesting.

The third item I won via ebay arrived.  a "mini" poster....size 16 X 20.

The heroes and villains of Challenge Of The Super Friends.

The "white spots" are not on the item I won, they're from the flash when I took the pic.

Atom, who can shrink himself to microscopic size.

Rima the Jungle Girl - She's an expert tracker, and is able to communicate with animals, basically a female Tarzan.

Hiya Chrissi,

the character you are asking about is "Bizarro".  A sort of 'clone' of Superman that's gone wrong.

He was originally designed to be a mirror image of Superman, but because he's 'lesser' than the original, he's always falling short.

He's been in the comic books for a while, and on various episodes of The Super Friends.

ot home yesterday, and 4 more Super Friends were waiting at the door! You'll note the Cybor's cart IDs him as a Teen Titan. That's true. In the comis, he did start as a Teen Titan. On the cartoon, he was a Super Friend in their last season. So I have Flash, Green Lantern, Batman & Cyborg. Only Hawkman and the original Jr. Super Friends (Wendy, Marvin & Wonder Dog) are left.

one of the pins on the site was Apache Chief from Super Friends.

Not too long ago on the Internet I saw a rather ... vulgar ... cartoon of a figure I think was supposed to be the male half of your Wonder Twins.  ::)

LOL  It wouldn't surprise me.   The super friends have been put into some crazy situations.

There was a cartoon called Space Ghost, and it featured Space Ghost and his two teen sidkicks, Jan and Jayce, and their pet monkey Blip.

you can find online a cartoon of the knife fight between Blip and the Twin's monkey, Gleek.   around the pit are various Space Ghost & Super Friends characters, watching the action.

Batman is off to one side, hitting on Jayce.

On the opposite side we have Zan and Jayna, making out with each other.  LOL

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

They should have let him take over when Jay Leno retired.  ;D

I've been going through a stack of comic books that I bought decades ago and there are three that are worth next to nothing. But if they will add to peoples' collections, I'll be glad to send them to you. Otherwise, they're going to Goodwill:

Green Lantern/Green Arrow No. 109
Challengers of the Unknown No. 34
Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth, No. 31
"chewing gum and duct tape"

My Funko Pops collection of Super Friends figures is (for now) complete.

;D

I say "for  now" because there are a few characters that have not been created.  If they do create them, I would get them.  The pic gets bigger if you click it.

Left to right:

Green Lantern, Flash, Firestorm, Robin, Batman, Hawkwoman, Superman, Hawkman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Wonder Twins (Zan & Jayna) and their pet Gleek.

ETA - LOL   I thought I had posted this pic a long time ago, and I was looking for other pics I had posted, and after a search, I found them in another collectibles thread.

I'm adding this link to the other thread, so only that one will be utilized, and prevent this one from being bumped up again.
