Ennis !!!!!
Alma was married to him, Cassie wanted to be with him .Lureen was married to someone who wanted to be with him.But that is too easy.


Jack!!!!!
 Lureen was married to him,Alma and Cassie both lost Ennis because of him.He was in love with Jack even though he never said it out loud.Therefore could not settle with either Alma or Cassie.

Talk about a f---ed up mess.
If Ennis had just gone off with Jack,after the summer of BBM then none of the 3 women would have been hurt.In trying to do the "right" thing,Ennis only succeeded in either directly, Jack,Alma and Cassie, or indirectly,Lureen,hurting everyone.

Brokeback mountain,all 3 women lost their men to the idyll that was the summer of Brokeback.The hearts of Jack and Ennis belonged to each other,not to their women.

I keep coming back to this thread constantly...there IS something in common among the lead characters in the movie, a something that Ang Lee added. A secret all the lead characters share. I discovered it as I was thinking of Ma Twist.

They all became more harsh and brittle, because of BBM. All 3 really lost their partners to the idyll that was the summer of Brokeback.Ironically it was somewhere that Jack and Ennis never returned to.But it was still there, its silent presence affecting all.

The harshness,brutality and raw reality of life in those times for that class of people and I don't just mean Jack and Ennis, is certainly evident in Proulxs' writing.In fact it is so raw and sparse it is almost stripped to the bone.
Brittleness I think comes to certain people,not all, as a result of life failing to live up to expectation.Even Jack with his forever,glass half full outlook,eventually becomes bitter and brittle.
It i salmost inevitable after a lifetime of let downs. You would have to be an eternal optimist,for it not to eventually take its toll.
