Over or Under?
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:47:36 pm »
It's a very stupid question, I know. But...

We were recently discussing this on one of the local forums I post on, and it's funny because people can get very passionate about this. I have a friend who reverses the toilet paper roll in my downstairs bathroom every time he comes over. I always know when he's been in there because the roll will be reversed.

I've heard some people say that men prefer their toilet paper to hang under, and women prefer it over. I'm really not too sure how accurate that is because I prefer it over, and I'm a guy. But maybe that's because I'm gay.  ???

So the question is, do you prefer your toilet paper over...

..... or under?

Great question, Cody!

I have it on good authority (my ex mother-in-law) that OVER is the proper way to hang toilet paper.

For that matter, I didn't make the bed correctly, either.  The top sheet goes pattern side DOWN so that you sleep between the pretty sides.  ::) 8)

P.S.  I'm a scruncher, Sue.   :D

I definitely prefer under. My husband likes over. So the only silver lining about the fact that I'm the one who usually changes the toilet paper is, at least I can have it under.

I know it!!

You never know what kinds of questions people will ask in here!

And I just noticed I hang my paper towels under in the kitchen, so I can't quite figure out that deal, because I'm the one who hung them there! So at my house it's over for the toilet paper and under for the paper towels.  ???

Have you ever noticed the toilet paper hangs over at the hotels? They always make that triangular fold and put one of those sticky gold seals on it. So, all of us OVERS are in good company! Holiday Inn, Radisson, Omni and the others do it too! ;) :D

Well, maybe you overs should start stretching a white paper strip across the seat while you're at it!

Definitley sheets pattern down as when you turn the top over it is pattern up.

I wonder if there's a correlation between over/pattern down and under/pattern up. I definitely prefer pattern up.

In fact, come to think of it, I guess I've never seen the logic of pattern down. For one thing, once you're in bed and covered up, even you, the sleeper, can't see the pretty side. So what you see when you look down the bed is the "ugly side." And also, when people come in to the room -- say, to bring you breakfast in bed -- they'll just see a head sticking out of the ugly side. The only time the pretty side gets seen is when you're climbing in and out.

I'm definitely an over. Under just doesn't make sense to me. When it's over, the end is right there in plain view so you can grab it easier.

I also like sheets with the pretty side up. Pretty side down makes a little sense to me, but only if you make the bed regularly, and...I don't.  ;) So for me, whatever side is up is the only one that gets seen.

And I'm a scruncher.  :)

The logic for under is that the roll acts like a fulcrum so you can rip it off easier.

Definitely over. Makes it easier to tear off.

The logic for under is that the roll acts like a fulcrum so you can rip it off easier.

That I don't understand, because when it's "under" I inevitably end up unrolling more paper than I intended.  ???

You have to use just the right snap of the wrist.

But actually, I roll off too much when it's over because there's nothing to pull it against. I think we're onto something here that explains people's preferences.

LOL,  this is a funny poll!  Well, I voted for "over."  I do like that it's easier to see/ grab the end almost like a handle that way... especially at night.  Although, I'm not very picky about this... and I don't usually think about the direction as I'm changing rolls.  So, it's not a huge deal to me.

Do any of you have pets that enjoy playing with toilet paper rolls?  I know some cats love to unroll toilet paper.  I count myself lucky, because this form of play has not occurred to Vivien (yet).

And, I don't hang my paper towels up.  They just stand on the counter so that they're easily portable.  I like to be able to move my paper towel roll around a lot (from room to room for cleaning, etc.).

Now as for sheets, I do definitely make an effort to put the pattern-side down when I make the bed.  I think the idea is to be "enveloped" in the pattern with the pattern on both the top and bottom sheet surrounding you when you're in bed.  And, like Optom said, when you fold the top sheet over the outer comforter (when actually making the bed neatly), then the pattern is visible that way too.  Most of my sheets are solid-colored, so it's not such a big issue a lot of the time for me.

a good trick for kids/pets who pull on the toilet paper roll until it's empty and all over the floor is to squish the roll a bit so that the cardboard center is more of an oval shape, or flattened a bit; and this, stops the roll from spinning out of control.  works like a charm!

does anyone have a toilet paper prefrence?  lot's of people are very picky about their 'shit-tickets'.....(my hubby for one).  gotta be triple ply, like 'charmin' or some other expensive brand; however, i will say that many public places have the cheapest paper around.  totallly useless!

did anyone see that sienfeld episode where elaine was in a bathroom stall and had no TP.  she begged the person next to her to give her some, but she too only had two squares, and would'nt give elaine one of them.  very funny episode!

Oh yes! The Seinfeld episode with Elaine and the "can you spare a square" lady was definitely a classic!

And about brands... I like Scotts 1000 sheets per roll variety.  I like that one roll lasts a really long time.  And, I also find Scotts to be really quite soft and nice, which is a plus.  Although, if forced to choose I'd pick longevity-of-roll over softness in most cases.

I have tried to keep out of this discussion but I can't anymore! I have to expose the truth! Northern Double Rolls are a RIPOFF! Two single rolls have more squares than the double roll!

Ok thank you that is all I had to say.

(and the roll goes OVER!)

well it did back before the cats discovered that they could get out of their litterbox walk over and pull a big ol pile into the litterbox.  ::) ::) ::)

If they were gonna connect using toilet paper to using the bathroom why couldnt they make the connection about using the bathroom and the toilet itself? I could save a fortune on litter!

now the roll lives in the vanity drawer there....

My Mother had a pet cat which sat on the toilet when he went potty. Actually I think he STOOD over the seat. I don't know if they trained him to flush or not, but I've heard some cats do flush the toilet after use. :)

It's true Jess! The cat actually used the toilet! I can't personally verify the accuracy of her claim of course, since the cat died long before I was born. But that's what she said. The cat used the toilet! :)

Does anyone around here use the toilet paper with the lotion on it?

I don't like it, do you? In fact, I wonder if they even SELL it anymore? I never look for it.

I like Charmin too SunShadow, and I also like Northern. Have you ever wondered why they bother to QUILT toilet paper?  ???

I don't know anything about lotioned varieties, but I like the Cottonelle brand toilet paper and occasionally I splurge on the wet-wipes.  Whoever invented flushable wet toilet paper, imo, was a genius.   ;)

That makes me think of the Everybody Loves Raymond episode called "Tissues" where Ray buys about 12 boxes of lotioned tissues. And then Frank says to him: "I hate those damn things. You pull one out to blow your nose and it feels like you've already done it."

Over for me...but under for my daughter...

I scrunch the cheap stuff in public toilets.

And I don't have patterned sheets so any side up is good for me.
