TOTW 15/08: Confetti Quiz
« on: April 28, 2008, 05:19:56 am »
Happy New Week BetterMostians!  :D

Let's try something new this week. We'll do a quiz, but I won't provide the questions, and there will be no virtual prizes to be won this time (and no real ones either ;)).

I'll start with the first question. If you know the answer, post it, then ask another question in the same post. Please mark your answers with a bold A and the new question with a bold Q.

Questions must refer to the movie or SS. They may be easy or hard, they may be about hard facts, like numbers, dates, colors, or for example about a character's motivation/feelings – anything you can imagine. It may be something you know the answer to, or actually something you never quite managed to figure out, but never got around to open a thread about it. Or something to which there is no real, definite answer (eg asking for an opinion). You get the picture.

Answers should be given to your best knowledge in general, but humor is welcome, too. After all, this should be fun.

I have no idea into what direction this will evolve – if it will work at all. But it sure won't work without your collaboration! Let's just try it and see how many Q/A we can get in one week! :D

(BTW I named the quiz Confetti Quiz because the questions/topics may become motley like confetti – if it sounds strange to you, please bear with your nonnative mod ;D)

A: The soup boxes were not hard to pack, they were BAD to pack, according to the bandy-legged Basque. And the reason they are bad to pack is because, well, soup in boxes? In saddlebags on mules? That could be a big mess!! Especially if you come upon a bear!! Better stick with beans!!

A: Well, from the google search I just did... this is the answer I came up with...

wow, that went over my head. I'm curious, how do "ashes" connect Aguirre, the Jack/Ennis "wedding" scene and the story. There is a line in the ss about his hair being the color of cigarette ashes, but I suspect that you are making a deeper point here.  :)

very interesting discussion on that thread. I looked at it, but to be honest nothing leapt out at me about the cigarette ashes or his gray hair. I may have missed something as there are really interesting comments. I liked the comments about the what I see as the "film noir" elements of light and shadow, venetian blinds, Ennis into the light and Jack into the dark. very clever! I love film noir, I even put up a thumbnail of "Double Indemnity" on my profile.

I'm curious about the suggestion that this could be a creature called a "bighorn lamb" as pictured here.  Why on earth would someone put the head of a lamb on their wall?  It's not like it's a buck with huge antlers or something.  To me it seems particularly sad to have such a small creature... a lamb even on one's wall.  Is this the first reference to the "sacrificial" lamb that comes up again following TS1 and in the guise of Earl and Jack metaphorically?

So, it's been mentioned (brilliantly) in the past that Jack's Lightning Flat bedroom is a microcosm of the whole movie or at least of the Brokeback summer (the white sloping walls equate to the white sloping canvas of the tent, etc., etc.).  Is it possible that Aguirre's office is also a microcosm of the movie?  Is Aguirre's office the bookend/ mirror scene to Jack's Lightning Flat bedroom?

Sorry to go off-topic here.

I'm delighted that you went off topic. When I saw what I believed to be the head of a lamb on the wall of Farm and Ranch Employment, I felt saddened and forwarned that Aguirre wouldn't be the sensitive type who had any sympathy for Jack and Ennis. It does make a statement to offer the head of a "baby" as a trophy.

Is Aguirre's office / parking lot a microcosm of the scope of the film? I don't know, but it is worth discussing on another thread.

Friends, this is a Jackalope on Aguirre's wall. This is not a lamb, never in my life! It's a jackrabbit with assembled "horns". Jackalopes come in different sizes and shapes, just do a quick google image search.
This is the head of a rabbit, a mountain hare (Lepus timidus, sometimes also called arctic hare) to be exact.

I've enlarged the jackalope, therefore it's not very sharp. But have a look at the form of the head, at the muzzle - and don't forget the ears. White with a black tip, as the winter coat of a mountain hare is.
His right ear (left from us) hangs to the side of the head, the left ear is behind the left "horn".
And have a look at the "horns"; they're totally different from sheep horns.

A mountain hare to compare:

Hi Elle! Your post came in while I was typing. Sorry to be OT once more. Splitting the topic might be a good idea, I'll have a look later.

God. Who could cut the HEAD off a lamb and then stick it on their wall?  :P  >:(

I never DID like Aguirre. He makes me mad!  >:( >:(

We're all etitled to our opinions, correct?  :D

yep, or who would cut off the head of a rabbit and stick it on their wall? I think rabbits are sweet inoffensive creatures. If this pic is of a Jackalope, then that is evidence of animal mutilation. Kill two animals and sew and glue their parts together and hang it on the wall. Gawd! To me that is just a sick as using a lamb's head as a trophy.

shouldn't trophies really be only of predators which are capable of killing the hunter? as a matter of fact, why is it such a great honor to have a trophy of an inoffensive herbivorous deer on the wall anyway?

Okay, good topic, but can we go back to the confetti quiz?  (Should we split the Aguirre's trailer topic off for continued discussion?)

Q:  What did Ennis and Jack do with the remains of the giant elk?

A- they dried part of the meat, roasted part of the meat, and buried the rest. sorry no trophy for Aguirre's wall. :P

Q- In what make of cattle truck does Ennis hitch a ride into Signal in 1963?

A: A Kenworth.

That was a hard one for someone living in Europe (and apparently not only for me, since the question remained unanswered for two days).
I'll go with something easier:

Q: Which of his two shirts did Ennis wear in TS1?

very good, yes the truck is a "KW" by Kenworth, or a "K-Whopper" as it is affectionately known by those who drive them. A bit of further trivia. the KW truck pictured in the film was not in use on the roads until the mid to late 1970's. So, using this truck in the section of the film set in 1963 is a error on the part of the crew in the film. It still looks good anyway!  ;)

Well, that was new to me. But you're right, the truck looks good. I guess when us Europeans think about an American truck, this is what comes to mind.

What made you think it's a cattle truck? I looked at some stills but I couldn't figure it out.  ???

the trailer on the back appears to be designed for hauling livestock - multiple siding holes for vents, and what appears to be a collapsable side. it could be a sheep truck as well, but it just looked to me like it was designed with one level for cattle, rather than two levels for sheep.  :)

are Kenworth trucks not sold in the European market?

Nope. They do have a manufactory in Australia, but nothing in Europe. Would be too expensive to ship them.
I had never heard of KW before. I found a list of important truck manufactorers in the US on wikipedia and recognizeed the KW sign.

I agree about the truck probably being a cattle truck. On the side sticks something out what appears to be straw, but it gets too blurred  when you zoom in, so I'm not sure.

I don't know if you can buy them here, but I've never seen one. A 'normal' European truck would look something like this:

In fact, when I saw one of those big 'American' trucks in Canada last year I couldn't help but take a picture.  ;D

;D Yup. It's the "snout" (however you call it) what makes the American trucks so different from ours.

It was taken in Toronto. And I only now realized that Jack Astor's was next door.  :o I like the name 'the loose moose'. Pitty it wasn't 'elk' though. :)

Brooklyn is correct.  However, I thought I read somewhere that Brooklyn Proulx was no relation to Annie.  Do you have the real skinny?

A:  Just a guess, based on my own sorority experience:  Tri Delt (Delta Delta Delta) most likely had the "party girls" and Kappa Phi the more well-to-do girls who liked to lay claim to a bit more sophistication.  Depending on your priorities, both were good houses to be a member of.  Lureen most likely had the edge in the competition, though.  It's very likely not an accident that those two sororities were chosen by our detail-conscious screenwriters and director.

Yes, according to the screenplay, Alma's dress was from J. C. Penney.  I've never seen a source for Ennis's suit.  Will be interested to know the answer to that one.  :)

The suit was a hand-me-down from K.E., who wore it at his wedding. Remember in the wedding scene the best man guy standing next to Ennis- that's him-no suit.  :-X

Here's what a bolo tie looks like.  They must have changed their minds about the bolo tie for the wedding, because he's wearing a normal necktie in the screencaps.

I read somewhere that Brooklyn is AP's granddaughter, maybe in "Getting Movied"? or one of AP's interviews.

you are exactly correct, Tri Delts were the party girls in the sorority scene in Texas universities n the 1970's and 1980's, maybe they still are! Kappa Phi's were more straight laced, not necessarily better off financially, just prim and proper. You are correct, McMurtry understands the Greek scene at UT and SMU very well, and threw those comments in the dialog to suggest a tension between Lureen and Lashawn.

A complete OT aside, but there was a recurring skit on Saturday Night Live that took place in a sorority.

When the phone rang, the Tri Delt member answered, "Delta Delta Delta, can I helpya helpya helpya?"

A: The teacher held it as hostage. Jack went by at the school on his way out of town because he feared Lureen would forget about it (which of course she would not have). After agreeing to get a tutor for Bobby and promising to reduce his complaining he got it back.

Q: Who was Aguirre talking to on the phone?

A:  Mrs. Aguirre, who wanted to have sex that night:

Mrs. A:  "Please, Joe."
Mr. A:  "No."
Mrs. A:  "Aw, c'mon, Joe."
Mr. A:  "NO."
Mrs. A:  "I'll do that little thing with the lasso you like."
Mr. A:  "Not on your fuckin' life!"

Q: Why is Jack an only child?

A) because OMT was a closet gay,so he produced one male heir,to prove he wasn't then either had sex through the back door with Mrs,T. or went along to Mexico with Jack. How else would he "know" so much about his son. What's the phrase, takes one to know one.

Q)How did Ennis a closed in, gay homophobe from a backward rural community, know about what went on in Mexico for people like Jack????

Aguirre, talking of Uncle Harold with pneumonia, says something like, "...docs don't expect he'll make it."  Unless my hearing is way off.

A:  Excellent question, Optom!  The story simply says, "Mexico was the place.  He'd heard."  I can't imagine it just came up in conversation at the Black and Blue Bar LOL.  Maybe it came to him in a vision after drinking too many Coronas.

A) I have no idea whatsoever.Perhaps he died of grief.Sometimes when you lose some one you love very much and have been with for a long time, you just give up.
Or on a more cheerful note, maybe he headed on down to Mexico, and could be that's how Ennis knows about Mexico.

Q)  Why did Jack's parents not go to their only sons funeral, particularly as Mrs.T obviously loved him so much?
