Ewan McGregor says cancer scare was 'no big deal'

Tuesday, 22 Apr 2008

Ewan McGregor has revealed he had a mole removed after a doctor discovered "a little skin cancer" beneath his right eye.

The Star Wars actor has explained that medical experts advised him to have the growths removed after he had been for a routine check-up.

Talking to the BBC while promoting his upcoming erotic thriller Deception, the 37-year-old said he is now fine and that the mole removal is "not that big of a deal".

"I just went to have them checked, you have to be careful if you're pale skinned and you spend time in the sun, with moles," he explained.

"So I went to see a specialist who thought they were better to be removed and indeed he was correct."

When asked if he had been at all frightened by his brief experience with the disease, he joked: "It was great fun having skin cancer, it was great, I really enjoyed it."

Ewan McGregor in negotiations for Angels and Demons

Apr 24, 2008

Casting of Sony Pictures' Da Vinci Code prequel Angels and Demons is shaping up quickly (Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer will play the lead female role). Ewan McGregor is in negotiations to take on the role of Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, the Pope's closest aide, who helps Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) with his investigation. McGregor, who will be seen in Fox's Deception, opening Friday, is currently filming I Love You Philip Morris opposite Jim Carrey.  However, he dismissed suggestions that some critics had dubbed the dark comedy 'Brokeback Prison', due to its tale of male inmates in love.

"That's putting it in a box before it's even started being made," said McGregor.

"It's a story about two men who are in love, so in that respect - Brokeback Mountain was a film about two men who are in love. There the similarity ends, I would say."

Angels and Demons is being directed by Ron Howard from a script by Akiva Goldsman. Brian Grazer and John Calley are producing. Filming is set to begin in Europe in June, with a May 2009 release date.

Nice poster.

Well, duh. ... What does he expect? I seem to remember reading that a certain movie got saddled with "The Gay Cowboy Movie" long before it got filmed.  ::)

I'm looking forward to seeing I Love You Phillip Morris! Glad it's not about cigarettes!

About Angels and Demons, I loved the book (read it in Rome!) but I'm not excited about Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. Call that sacreligious if you must. I actually see Robert as a Daniel Day-Lewis or maybe Hugh Jackman.

I haven't read the book yet.  Am looking forward to it.

Agree completely with you.

I wasn't pleased at all with Hanks as casting choice.  It was made for various obvious reasons - he wanted the role, he's buddies with the director, he's an Oscar winner and popular EveryMan of our generation and, most importantly, IMO, he gives off no sex appeal whatsoever.  He's a neutral teddy bear.  In the book, there was a sexual tension between the two characters and if you know who the female character turns out to be, you can see how some might have been squeamish about having lustful thoughts being bandied about the screen.  Hence, the hiring of Mr. StaySoft Marshmallow Man.

I was thinking Hugh Jackman, Clive Owen, DD-Lewis, someone tall, dark and handsome.  The book described Langdon as the "Indiana Jones" of cryptography.

And when I think of Indiana Jones, Tom Hanks immediately comes to mind. ::)

So I'm looking forward to seeing McGregor in the role.  He can't help but be sexy.  ;D

Excuse me Delalluvia, I didn't see this thread you had already started on I LOVE PHILLIP MORRIS.  I was talking to someone who worked on the film who told me the sex scenes will be racier then Brokeback Mountain. Couldn't give me more details.  I wonder what were gonna see.  :D   I wonder what Carrey's frat boy fans are gonna think.

Thank you for explaining the unfortunate decision to (mis)cast Tom Hanks in the role!  Now it makes weird sense in a too-pussy-for-controversy kind of way, but what a bad decision!  A good contender for worst casting choice in the history of cinema IMO.  I didn't even bother seeing THE DAVINCI CODE.

Now back to Ewan McGregor who has a surplus of sex appeal, lol!
