What is your favorite meal of the day?
« on: May 12, 2008, 12:09:47 am »
We call lunch, "dinner" in many parts of my state. And instead of dinner, we often call it "supper". But "language barriers" not withstanding, what is your favorite meal of the day?

Mine is Supper (Dinner)

I really don't often have time for Lunch, and when I do it is quite often a salad or something quick and simple.

Lots of people in my state favor breakfast, because it is the biggest meal of the day... pancakes, bacon, eggs, grits, biscuits and gravy, fried ham  and toast. Yummy.

What about you? What is your favorite meal?
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

Breakfast, because I love eggs, pancakes, English muffins, omlettes, cereal, french toast, bacon, hash browns, oatmeal, toast, cold pizza -- there is almost no breakfast food I don't love. In a restaurant, I have a hard time narrowing it down, and sometimes can't decide and have to order an embarrassingly huge amount of food.

Dinner is my favourite meal. I usually don't eat breakfast due to time or because I tend to be a bit lazy, but if its there then I will be in boots and all. Mind you if theres food there at any time of the day I'll be there. The girls at work are horrified with the share volume I eat and still only have a 30 inch waist (damn it).

I'm a nightowl. Always have been. Late at night is my favorite time of the day.
Me too ;D

Are you originally a Midwesterner Katherine? I can't remember. You sure sound like one!! ;)

Yes, born and raised in Minnesota. Do you think of Midwesterners as particularly liking breakfast?

I voted lunch. It is the only meal I get to have in peace and quiet on my own.I can eat what I want, how I want ,and when I want. Breakfast is chaos as I feed various kids and get them to the bus.
Dinner is equally chaotic and normally in shifts, as I collect assorted kids and ferry them off to various activities.
I do however like my late night snack of cereals, whibh I have any time after about 11.00pm when the house is blssfully quiet again.
I have always eaten cereals late at night,it dates back to the time when I was a studying into the smalll hours of the morning and they were cheap and filling.

I voted for breakfast for this same reason.  I adore breakfast food.  The one thing I'd add to my vote here, is that I like breakfasts on weekends.  On weekdays, breakfasts are a sad, rushed affair.  But, a luxurious, leisurely breakfast on a weekend morning is my idea of a great treat (particularly if it involves going to a fun or quaint restaurant).  I also love brunch on weekends, because it allows me to sleep in... and it often involves the option of fun cocktails like mimosas in addition to the lovely breakfast food.  Excellent indeed.

On weekdays, my vote would be for dinner since dinner is usually the only leisurely/ non-rushed meal that I have on a work day.

Well I think I,ll put breakfast. I eat mostly the same thing every day. Half a tin of fruit, but minus the plastic red cherries, gross(you know the kind in syrup?) with yogurt and cereal on top. I sometimes eat that at lunchtime too. I think sandwiches are boring. David, did I see you put biscuits and gravy, for breakfast???? Isn,t gravy something you have on your roast dinner? And what on earth are grits??  :-\

Oh, I was just thinking I'd forgotten about biscuits and gravy, myself! It's a classic American breakfast dish, especially in the South. You top biscuits (BTW, in America, "biscuits" are fluffy, flaky, white-flour rolls -- what you Brits call biscuits, we call cookies) with sausage gravy, which is thick and light brown and slightly peppery, with small chunks of sausage.

And grits are finely ground white corn, approximately the consistency of oatmeal but smoother, more like cream of wheat if you're familiar with that. They're served hot and topped with butter. I think the closest Euro equivalent would be polenta.

Right! Another good reason to love breakfast/brunch.

Hm. I voted for diner because that's the meal our whole family has together. And the only breakfast I have is a cigarette.

But reading K's and other posts, I remember I really do love breakfast, only not so early in the morning. And I don't like making it myself. But I love all breakfast food, be it classical English breakfast, French croissants or the typical German rolls. Cereals, sausages, toast, rolls, Brezel, eggs sunny-side-up, scrambled eggs, fried tomatoes, orange juice, coffee, pancakes -bring it on!
Hmmm, now I've made myself hungry.

So while I don't do breakfast at home, I relish it when on vacancies (and when I go out for breakfast with Kerstin).

I voted for lunch because it's very nice to take a break from work and go out to lunch. There are many good restaurants near my office. However, most of the time I have to eat at my desk because I have too much to do...I fall behind in my work because I am goofing around on the internet...can't imagine where the time goes!

I don't like breakfast all that much. I like eggs but don't care for pancakes, English muffins, omlettes, and especially cereal. The rest of my family eats tons of cereal, it's like living with horses!! I don't care for french toast, bacon, oatmeal, toast, or cold pizza (ugh). Primarily I don't like to eat when I'm not hungry, and in the mornings my stomach hasn't woken up yet. That's another reason why I like lunch.

I don't care for dinner too much for the same reason...I'm rarely hungry then. Would rather skip it and then wake up the next morning feeling very svelte.

You've summed it up perfectly for me, Amanda.  In fact, I've been known to make "breakfast" for dinner sometimes.  And this poll has been a great reminder to me that I should take the time to enjoy more of my meals!

There's a line in Juno where Michael Cera's mom tells him something like, "Get read to come down and eat -- it's your favorite, breakfast for supper!"

David, I'm not sure that photo is the best one to convince Souxi of the deliciousness of biscuits and gravy!  But then, the dish probably doesn't photograph well in general.

I feel like biscuits and gravy are the equivalent of beans on toast... in terms of being surprisingly tasty and the type of somewhat unexpected breakfast food that some folks have never tried or heard of.  Very regional too.

Biscuits and gravy are super yummy as far as I'm concerned.  :P  But, I always feel guilty when I eat them because they're so greasy and buttery.  Anything involving biscuits is good.

Where is my post? I'm positive I posted an answer to this yesterday evening, but now it's gone.  ??? Strange.

Brezel = pretzel

Not the thin, crispy ones like this

But the softer, thicker ones:

You eat them pure or with butter on them. Although I've heard first-hand that some Americans spread mustard on - what a sacrilege! ;) (you know who you are  ;D)

Here you go, Souxi:

Biscuits and gravy:

Grits:

Errrrrrrr David I don,t wish to appear ungrateful or anything but to be perfectly honest with you, that looks absolutly revolting. In fact it looks remarkably similar to something one of my cats chucks up when they have a hair ball!!! YUK. Sorry that just does NOT look appetising atall. *shudders*
You see when I think of gravy, I think of the stuff you put on your roast dinner, and THAT is nothing like gravy.
On the other hand the pictures of the pretzels were nice, especially the thin crispy ones. I eat loads of those. I don,t eat a lot of biscuits, or cookies as you call them.

I love those big, soft pretzels - and, yep, you've got my number Chrissi - with mustard!   ;D  I've made them from scratch a few times.  They're actually really simple to make.

Back when I was a teen, they used to sell giant pretzels at the mall. God they were huge. I could have probably untied them and used  them for a belt! I don't know, maybe they still have those prezel stands inside the mall. :)

David, there must be at least four soft pretzels places at my local mall!  Sometimes I think they're only ones doing any business.  LOL!  They not only sell the orginal big, soft pretzels, now they come in all different varieties:  jalapeno, garlic,  cinnamon sugar, glazed raisin, etc.  There's even a "pretzel dog" - hog dog wrapped in pretzel dough.

And regular hard pretzels dipped in chocolate are wonderful - I love the sweet/salty combination!

One of my favorites, that I rarely get to do, is to have some wonderful friend watch my child while I slip away and have some kind of stir fried veg, meat, and fried rice at a Chinese restaurant for lunch.  Sit and read a good novel, by my lonesome, then go have a cup of coffee or some chocolate, and I'm happy mommy when I get my child back for the afternoon.

I also have found a restaurant that makes really good oatmeal, it's hard to decribe, each little piece of oatmeal is fully cooked, yet still somehow its own individual bit, feels very healthy.  The healthy oatmeal, with four pieces of bacon - that's a breakfast.

Since becoming a mom I'm usually too tired by evening to really enjoy going out to dinner.  That's sort of sad.

And then there's a cup of Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream late at night while surfing BetterMost.  What's that meal called?   :)

Shut up about oatmeal. This ain't its fault.

(Yeah, so?? Since when do Brokieisms always have to make sense? Isn't it just nice to know that some sentence constructions can still remind us of the movie?)

Wow!  That's some refined Brokieism parsing!  Very excellent.

I'm sitting in my office laughing and people in the hall are glancing at me... suspicious, like they know (lol, sorry, couldn't resist).

Anyway, I love oatmeal... really good oatmeal is a great comfort food.  Especially when it's loaded up with butter, cream and brown sugar... and maybe a raisin or two.

Speaking of great Brokieisms!

So I had to leave my house for a few hours this morning, so I went out ... to breakfast! At The Original Pancake House. As usual, I had a really hard time narrowing down my selection because I pretty much could have eaten anything on the menu, if not everything on the menu.

What I finally chose was:

The Farmer's Scramble -- four (!!) eggs, scrambled with spinach, tomatoes, onions and mushrooms.
Whole-wheat toast.
A side of wheat-germ pancakes.
Fresh-squeezed OJ.
Coffee.

And I was sad that I couldn't also get hash browns! I chose the healthy-sounding Farmer's Scramble (forgoing the somewhat tastier veggie-and-cheese omelette) because I'm trying to eat healthy in hopes of losing weight. But with four eggs, plus the side of pancakes (which, despite the wheat germ, were still mostly white-flour), I probably consumed about a whole day's worth of calories anyway

Sounds like a great breakfast!  Yeah, I bet the hash-browns would have been too much food.  And, I like the sound of the balance between the savory egg dish and the sweet pancakes.

That's often my biggest dilemma... deciding if I want sweet or savory.  Often at restaurants (I mean fancy-ish restaurants) I notice that sweet breakfasts (like pancakes) sometimes just come alone without many side options.  That can be frustrating.  Diner type restaurants are great because they seem to offer combos with sweet and savory more often.

I'm also jealous of the fresh squeezed OJ!  I love fresh squeezed juice!  It can be almost like a different food from packaged juice.

Now I want breakfast for dinner.  :P

But, alas, last night I cooked a mammoth pot of chilli - meant to last several dasy - so it's chilli for me tonight.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean about this. I usually want a little bit of each. But then JUST eggs and pancakes never seems quite right, either -- there's too much contrast between the savory and sweet, and I need the buffer of the more neutral potatoes or toast. Oh, the challenges of being a breakfast-lover!

When I visited my brother in Denver and went out to breakfast at this great breakfast place near his home (Lee, if you're reading, you may know it -- I think it's name has "sky" in the title and it doubles as a yoga studio), it was perfect. I ordered an egg thing. And he ordered blueberry pancakes, which also sounded really good. But then he didn't finish them -- so I ate most of those, too!

I guess now you're all probably figuring out why I'm trying to lose a few pounds.  ::)

I love fresh-squeezed OJ, too. But here's a shortcut tip -- I've found that you can come pretty close at home by squeezing a few oranges and mixing their juice in with a batch of frozen OJ. It makes the whole thing taste pretty close to fresh.

A couple months ago I ordered baked oatmeal at a great little restaurant famous for its breakfasts - it had chunks of apple and cranberries in it, but Im sure it wasn't at all healthy -  it tasted like a big, warm, soft oatmeal cookie, with crispy edges  :)

Yes!  Sweet and savory with a "buffer" - that's a perfect description for my idea of a perfect breakfast!

Amanda, maybe you can freeze it?  I almost always have left-over chili and I almost always freeze it.
