What's Your Favorite Junk Food?
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:42:28 pm »

So, I know we all try to be health conscious, responsible adults about our eating habits.  But, I think we all have secret, favorite junk foods.  Some are nostalgic for our childhoods and some are newly discovered.

It would be fun if folks could name specific brands and share stories about these foods too.

Another great poll, Amanda!

I chose potato chips - barbecue flavored specifically.

Pizza - I prefer a thin crust, but I won't turn away from a thick crust.  I like mushrooms, black olives and anchovies as toppings.  I know most people hate anchovies, but I love them on pizza.  Luckily, my husband and son like them, too!

Soft pretzels - they're actually pretty easy to make at home.

Good chocolate - Although I know there can be a big difference in the quality of chocolates,  I don't think I ever met a chocolate I didn't like   :)  (I don't like white chocolate at all,  but I don't think that really qualifies as chocolate.)

Brownies - which would be my "Other" choice.  I like to underbake my brownies, just slightly, and add walnuts.

I chose cotton candy, funnel cake, pastries, fried chicken and chocolate.
The cotton candy which is called candy floss in U.K reminds me of my first ever fair, on holiday with my parents in Scotland age about 5.
Funnel cake is new to me,since moving here but I just lurve it.
Pastries has to be all butter pain au chocolat.Which also have to be warmed in the oven and I then split them open and cover with butter. All the butter and melted chocolate run together, and my arteries run for the hills. It is the one good thing about my oldest son,he gives me so much stress I burn off everything I eat!!!!
Colonel sanders fior fried chicken,my favourite junk take out.
Chocolate, anything as long as it is not Hersheys, sorry cannot get a taste for it.I eat Lindt with hazelnuts and order in Cadburys flake and after 8 mints from the U.K.But really I am not that fussy any chocolate will do in an  emergency, except as mentioned te H stuff.I guess you need to have been born here to like it.

It's a much shorter list to the junk food I don't like!

Ice cream - Ben and Jerry's - they don't have a bad flavor!
Potato Chips - Cape Cod salt and vinegar
Doritos
Pizza - sausage, mushroom, pepperoni - frozen pizzas like Red Baron or Tombstone that evoke childhood memories are particularly good!
Hard candy - nope
Candy bars - Hershey's Dark, Kit Kat, Snickers, Milky Way
Cotton candy - can live without it
Funnel cakes - can live without it
Popcorn - BUTTER of course, or caramel or...
Hot dogs - mustard and ketchup, or mayo and sweet relish
Hostess snacks - Twinkies, Cupcakes, Nutty bars, not the pink puffs, tho...
Rice Krispie treats - Nah, that would require cooking
Nachos - with or without processed cheese  :D
Beef jerky - I learned to like this in Alberta!
Slushie drinks - If I see one!  The ones that turn your tongue blue are fun!
Sugary coffee drinks - with or without whipped cream...I think everyone knows about my breve mocha habit since Seattle  ;)
Pies- fruit or cream? Both!  apple, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate cream, lemon cream, you can leave off the meringue, tho!
Cake - cheese, carrot, chocolate, red velvet, lemon, German chocolate...
Pork rinds - NO WAY!! (Tee Hee -  cool! there's something I won't eat!)
Fried cheese sticks - what type of dip? Marinara!!
Buffalo wings - extra spicy with ranch or bleu cheese for the celery!
French fries - yummy, esp with assorted condiments like ketchup and mayo!
Sugar cereals - Frosted Flakes, Count Chocula, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, Captain Crunch...
Jello - what kind? (Ick!  Another NO WAY!!!)
Pudding (chocolate, vanilla, lemon, pistachio)
Pop tarts - strawberry, blueberry, and what happened to being able to get the kind without sprinkles, anyhow??
Fluffer-nutter sandwiches - sounds good, must try them!
Soft pretzels - yummy with mustard
Pastries - baklava, cannoli, scone
Sugary bubblegum - no, I'm OK here, tho I like the Bazooka because you get the little comics. :D
Fried chicken - yes, especially cold late at night
Ribs - yes
Burgers - what toppings? You name it, though I don't like raw onion or egg.  You can get an egg on a burger in Seattle.  Who knew?
Carmel apples - fun to make with those wrappers you can find at Halloween!
Good chocolate - I love dark cocoa made with Ghiradelli powder and only a little bit of sugar!
Other  :D :D :D

This was a very fun virtual binge! ::) 8) 8) :P Thanks, Amanda!

Wow Lynne!  I'm very impressed by the thoroughness of your answer!

I agree that there are many more things on this list that I really like than just the 5 that I set as the voting limit.

I voted for ice cream, pizza, pie (mostly fruit pies... but occasionally I like cream pies... I love banana cream pie), pastries and fried chicken.  All of these things except for fried chicken are some of my "regular" fallback comfort foods.  Fried chicken is something I crave about once a year... but when I do crave it, it's an almost overwhelming urge.

:)

ps.  You've never tried a Fluffer-nutter?  It's a peanut butter sandwich made with marshmallow fluff... and white bread of course.  They are surprisingly good and decadent in their sugary-ness.

I have not!  White bread, peanut butter, and marshmallow fluff, huh?  Might be worth trying!  I am a big fan of pb&j's and Nutella.  :D

The marshmallow sandwich idea reminds me of Smores - toasted marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate...Maybe a beach cookout is in order soon??  :-*

Okay, and now, i'm going to have some...dark 'côte d'or' chocolate, hmmmm.  :)

I know how you feel.  Actually, in about an hour and a half I have to give a major presentation to one of our boards and I'm shaking in my boots with nerves.  Yikes!!!

I've been studying and re-studying my notes.  And, I can't concentrate on anything else.  So, I keep looking at BetterMost to calm my nerves.  At this point I just can't wait for the presentation to be over.  It's the anticipation that's the worst I think.

OK.. back to more fun topics like junk food! 8)

I agree with you that Ben and Jerry's is the best ice cream.  I like most of their flavors that have chunks of candies and chocolate, etc. in them.  Some of my specific favorites are Chubby Hubby, Phish Food, Triple Caramel Chunk, and Chunky Monkey.

I didn't like jerky before Brokeback Mountain...now I get it and remember Jack and Ennis enjoying their elk, the strips drying by the fire!  :D  You can keep the jello and pork rinds, tho!

Good luck on your presentation, Amanda!  Some fried chicken to celebrate when you get finished?  We'll put honey and butter on the biscuits, of course!  ;) :D

Hey Fabienne!

Cotton candy is this spun sugar stuff you get at a fair or carnival or amusement park here.  Do you have something similar??

I love Hostess Ding Dongs (or King Dons or Big Wheels as they're called in some regions).

Majority of the list -- yummy!!

Have you all tried Caramel Iced Latte or Java Chiller at Sonic? Addictive and delicious (if you like that kind of drink)!!

You're like my husband - he loves any type of "gummies"!   I can take them or leave them - but if I'm going to eat a gummy candy I like Sour Patch Kids.  It's a sour gummy with a sugar coating:

I like the combination of sweet and sour, or salty and sweet.

Have you all tried Caramel Iced Latte or Java Chiller at Sonic? Addictive and delicious (if you like that kind of drink)!!

I don't have a Sonic nearby, but Tim Horton's Iced Cappucino is wonderful. In the summer, I like to drink just plain iced coffee in the morning.

I remember Fluffernutter! :D

Do they still sell it? Yeah, Mom always put it on my peanut butter sandwiches. I haven't had it in years. It's very good, even though it probably contains enough cholesterol and fat to cement your arteries closed on contact!

Yep, they definitely still sell Fluff.  I had a wild craving for a Fluffer-Nutter a few weeks ago and bought some Fluff.  There are actually several brands of marshmallow spread... knock-offs of Fluff.  But, for a true Fluffer-Nutter I think it needs to be real Fluff brand Fluff.

These are a common treat at carnivals and fairs in the U.S.  They're essentially fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar.

When I was a kid, my mom used to have a huge baking session every Sunday, pies, cakes, cookies,to last the week. I cannot believe how little, lookng back ,I appreciated it.I always wanted the shop bought cakes and considered myself, hard done buy.
My kids are the exact opposite, they love it when I bake. They really consider it a treat, and I alway have to make extra cake mix so we can all get a good few spoons, before it hits the oven.

The whole fudge topic is interesting when it comes to Fluff too.  Because, as far as I understand, a lot of folks use Fluff as a basic ingredient in fudge.

I don't know why.

But, as far as Fluff staying in business (a la David's question earlier... I think the fudge issue is on main reason that Fluff is still going strong).

You're like my husband - he loves any type of "gummies"!   I can take them or leave them - but if I'm going to eat a gummy candy I like Sour Patch Kids.  It's a sour gummy with a sugar coating:

I like the combination of sweet and sour, or salty and sweet.

Yummy! Can I have some?  ;D

I remember Fluffernutter! :D

Do they still sell it? Yeah, Mom always put it on my peanut butter sandwiches. I haven't had it in years. It's very good, even though it probably contains enough cholesterol and fat to cement your arteries closed on contact!

Hey David. I never had fluff as a kid somehow...  But, I do love the warm marshmallow stuff they put on a hot fudge sundae.  Yum.

Just for the record:  there is no fat in fluff!  It's made with corn syrup, sugar and egg whites--carbohydrate and protein.  Not that it's good for you, though!

Guess what Amanda?

I got me a jar of Fluffer!!

I don't think I'll even bother spreading it on peanut butter! I'm gonna stick a spoon in the jar! :)

:D :D :D :D :D

Reading that made my mouth hurt in commiseration, David!  ::) :D

Congratulations David. 8)  Now I wish I had a jar of Fluff at home too. :)

My Dad apparently keeps a jar of Nutella at his office and eats it with a spoon when he needs a sugar fix.

I had to see what Scottish butter tablet looks like.  As I feared, it looks wonderful.  I bet it's like maple sugar candy.

Haven't had that, but you reminded me of one of my favorite cookies, Walkers shortbread cookies.

You just have to try and get some butter tablet, it is sinfully good. I rang my parents today to see if they could send me some.We just have to see if it is allowed through cutoms or not.
Walkers shortbread is good isn't it. Very easy to make your own shortbread.

The Stottish butter tablet does look good!

Have any of you ever tried a Scotch Kiss?

It's a marshmallow coated in caramel or butterscotch.  They're very chewy and sticky and tend to stick to your teeth.  But, they're delicious!  :P

There's no fat in Fluff? Really Paul? Now I feel a little less guilty about gobbling it down like a snorting hog!

Honest, David.  It turns out that Fluff was invented right here in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1917.  Snort away!

I got that picture from the Sees Candy website.

My uncle often sends my Mom, Dad and I Sees Candy at Christmas and sometimes there Scotch Kisses are included amongst the assorted candy (which are mainly chocolates)

While showering this morning, I was thinking about C Jay Cox and the movie Latter Days, and the line that came to me was

You're pretty on the outside but on the inside you're nothing but fluff.  You're just a walking, talking marshmallow peep.
-Aaron Davis, Latter Days

Clearly, what the junk food thread needs is....marshmallow peeps!  :P ;D

Oooohhhh this is a good one

I chose:

Ice cream - Italian if I can get it, but any sort generally
Chocolate - Hotel Chololat (they have a web site) I get a box delivered every 3 months, the box lasts for 2 days....yum
Pudding - Love rice pudding - crispy nutmeg sprinkled on top......here we go I'm droooling now   :P
Candy Bar - Here in the UK we have a bar called a Double Decker, it has a crispy base with soft nougat on top, covered in chocolate
Other - Brandy Snaps piped with fresh cream

That's it I'm done......off to the cake shop   :P

In general:  ice cream, cheesecake and anything chocolate as long as it doesn't have processed coconut in it.

In particular:  The Atlanta Bread Company's asiago cheese bagels and McDonalds' Sausage McMuffin.

This is a bit off topic, but a few of our members were telling us they enjoy HP sauce on their french fries (chips). Do you like HP sauce on your french fries Chris? It sounds good, but I don't think they sell HP sauce in Indiana.

Those Double Deckers sound really good too! :D

I'm not a huge fan of french fries as I prefer proper home made chips, then yes......HP sauce has to go on. Its especially nice on Bubble & Squeak.
Have you ever heard of Bubble & Squeak.......typically it is left over veg and roast potatoes (from the Sunday roast) mashed together then fried.  Delicious  ;D

Nope, I've never heard of Bubble & Squeak before, but it sounds pretty good. Do they call it that because of the sound it makes when it's fried?

I HAVE heard of people reheating leftovers and mashing it all together. And I think we have a special name for it too but I just call it "reheated leftovers"!  ;)  ;D

It does sound good Chris. I've never thought about frying leftovers before. I'll try it sometime. :D

Bubble & Squeak really is a funny name.  I've never heard of it before.

But, speaking of leftovers... tonight I watched one of Paula Dean's shows on Food Network and she made a really tasty looking (and rather decadent... as her recipes often are) casserole with leftover mashed potatoes (the leftover mashed potatoes I guess were the original inspiration for the dish).  It was a layered casserole with the bottom being the mashed potatoes, then covered with sour cream, then covered in onions and peppers sauteed in lots of butter, then cheese, then sliced roasted potatoes and then I think it was all repeated once and topped with cheese.  Then she baked the whole thing.  It definitely looked like comfort food.

My friend Rick met Paula once in Savannah. He "conveniently" bumped into her in one of the stores. Knowing Rick he was probably stalking her. But I digress.  ;)

Anyway, he said Paula is every bit as friendly in real life as she is on her show. He told me she stood there and talked to him for about five minutes. The woman exudes Southern charm and hospitality. :)

Marie

you ever put caramel in the mix and pecans? YUM!
