Kerry's "What is it"? ***ANSWER POSTED***
« on: August 17, 2008, 01:00:57 am »
David provides us all with so much pleasure and entertainment with his fun "What is it?" polls. I thought it would be nice to create a "What is it?" poll that David could also enter and enjoy. So here's one especially for you, David, as well as for everyone else to participate in.

This object is made of cast iron and is a little over 12" (30cm) in height, with a detachable lid.

Why thank you Kerry! This is fun! :D

Now what the hell IS that thang?  ???  ???

I'm tempted to say "I don't know what it is" but I won't go that route. So....  :-\

Those figures on the side of the object (the handles) look Aztec or Mayan, or even maybe Inca. Some of those tribes (I think the Mayans) offered hearts and blood to their gods, so I'm guessing it is a container to hold the hearts of sacrificial victims".

I voted for: "Ancient container for fermenting grapes."

Great idea Kerry! 8)  Do you know what your prize will be for this quiz?  Will Ennis and Jack be giving out lambs for your quiz too... or will they come up with something else?

I agree with you, David. It does, indeed, look Aztec or Mayan. Whether or not that's correct, however, remains to be seen! Ha-ha!  ;)   ;D

I've not decided upon prizes as yet, Amanda. However, having said that, I suspect they will be less woolly than previously and probably involve a great deal of glitter!!!  ;)

Ive gone for "ancient oil amphora"....not that i know what the amphora bit means, but it looks like something that the ancients would have kept their oil in.......

It loks like a samovar to me, so I voted Chinese tea pot.
Of course, a samovar would have a spigot, but this could just be the backside to make it more difficult.

Do the figures/handles look more Aztec or more Chinese? Hmmm ....
David might be right, and the container to hold the hearts of sacrificial victims would be my second guess. But for the records I stick with Chinese teapot.

I agree, Chrissi, the handles do have a Chinese look about them. Good luck with your vote!  :D

There is a third picture that I'm saving and will only post after I have revealed what this thing is. The third photo is taken from another angle and will reveal, indisputably, what it is used for. It may very well reveal a hidden spigot, referred to by Chrissi. That would probably make it a tea pot, Jess. In which case, you and Chrissi would be correct. However, it may reveal something else entirely different.  ;)   ;D

I'm going to vote for incense burner, mostly because it's metal.  Oil, wine and water would be better stored in stoneware or terra cotta.  It looks ornate, as if for a ritual of some sort.

The motifts resemble art of Oceania to me.

Thanks, Kerry!

It could very well be from Oceania, Paul. Somewhat like a Fijian cooking pot, maybe?  ;)   ;D

Kerry says a big thank you to everyone who has participated in his lil What Is It  poll.  :-*   :-*  :D

Prizes will be awarded tomorrow. As it is, however, that will be singular, not plural! Yep, that's right, as at present, only one participant has guessed the correct answer. You have 24hrs before I announce what the object is. Feel free to change your vote if you wish. Before doing so, however, bear in mind that one of you is already correct!  ;)   ;)    ;D

Oh, am I too late to vote?  I chose "ancient container for fermenting grapes."  I was at an art exhibit recently and they had an object that looked a lot like that and they were used in the wine-making process.  Great idea, Kerry.  Thanks! :)

And the winner is . . . . . . .

But before I make the announcement, here's the third photo I mentioned earlier.

Yep, that's right, the lid is a form of stylized chimney. Sooty residue can be seen around the rim. And that can mean only one thing . . . . . .

It is a . . . . .

Incense Burner!

Which makes Paul (southendmd) the winner!

Congratulations, Paul!

In the great tradition of the "What is it?" quizzes, I had planned on giving livestock as first prize. Alas, however, the prize escaped on his little motorbike.

So in the absence of the naughty little run-away piggy, kindly accept this beautiful glittering rose as your prize, Paul! (What, me camp? Never!)

Thank you to everyone for playing.
