David's "What Is It" For October ** ANSWER POSTED!! **
« on: October 12, 2008, 02:23:19 am »
No description was given regarding this object. But.... since I already know the answer, I think it's probably safe to say it is approximately 10 - 12 inches long and made of metal. The year of manufacture was not indicated.

The winner or winners will receive a lamb from Ennis and Jack!  :D

I first looked at the pictures before I looked at the options, and thought straight away it looked like something for winding string or yarn.

So my pick is a tool for winding string quickly

Love these games David.

I voted for a lid rethreading device....but why you would need to do that is beyond me.

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

Me too, but I think they'd want to conserve things, or recycle if possible--back then. Maybe there was a shortage of lids.  ;) I really don't know how the lids would lose their threads, tho. Hmmmm....maybe I need to change my answer!

It was an old time record player, that worked by cranking it.

Well, when all other clues are discounted, what you have left is the truth. (Sherlock Holmes said something like that).
Looks like someone would wind a strip of thin metal through, and it would come out fluted, like a clarinet reed.

So ... It can only be a tool used to shape clarinet reeds.

Hey, that answer has only one vote! And I know Jess picked it too.  ???
(That's ok. Jess doesn't get many right, so she can have the lamb).

Probably something that photographs well in the dark, Jess.
Maybe fluoro pink, or something like those costumes they wore in Priscilla Queen of the Desert?

Do you think we could get a pic of the ufo for David's 'What Is It?' ?
Then all us Aussies would know the answer, 'cause we'll have seen it in real life.

Im not of topic........

What are clarinet reeds??

Sue, a clarinet reed is a small piece of cane which is attached to the mouthpiece of the instrument. It is attached to the mouthpiece by a small metal ring and screws. When air is blown into the clarinet the reed will vibrate and is partly responsible for producing the tone. The top part of the reed is very thin - it has to be thin in order to vibrate properly - but the bottom part is thicker so it can be clamped down tightly to the base of the mouthpiece.

Saxophones, oboes and bassoons also have reeds. In fact oboes and bassoons have double reeds, one on the top and bottom. Clarinets and saxophones have one single reed located on the underside of the mouthpiece and the mouthpiece itself is made of wood or plastic. :)

I couldn't find a decent picture of a clarinet reed but here is a picture of an bassoon reed...

Sounds like a very intiricate bit of structure of a piece of reed to me.  Far too precise for a tool like the one you have displayed.

But then again, you never know eh.

Im still sticking to my original answer.

So what are you changing your vote to Rob?.....

Would they have had glass jars with lids way back when that tool was made?????

Nahhh.

Better leave it as it is.
Don't want anyone saying I got special treatment.

(was going to change it to jar lid re-threader but, what the heck, a stuffed puppy consolation prize will be ok).  :)

Normally I set the poll so people can change their answers, but I forgot this time. So you aren't receiving special treatment Rob. Everybody can change their vote now. Just click on the "Remove Vote" link in the poll and then vote again. If you change it though, make sure you post your new answer! :)

OK. Changed it to tool for re-threading jar lids.
Still don't see quite how it would work very well, but nothing else seems to stack up.

Aha. Now we KNOW who 'somebody' is.
And how 'somebody' voted.
And that might mean 'somebody' is wrong and is bound to say something about it.  :-X

Okay, here's the answer!

It shall be revealed................................................

David crosses his arms.................................................

Quicky nods his head.........................................................

*boing!*

*Poof!!!*

And the answer magically appears before our eyes....................................

It is a tool used to restore the threads on the zinc lids of glass jars!

So we have SEVEN lambs to hand out!!

I have a bit of a headache tonight, so I won't be posting a winners list (at least not tonight!) but you know if you are a winner or not, so if you are, come and grab your lamb!! :D

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks for playing everyone! :)

BTW, great job with the "wrong answers" - very clever, David!  And thanks for another great game! :)

Thank you, David!!!!

No one got theirs, so I brought them all to my post--so they'd be company to each other. Plus I have a sheepdog who can keep them all together.  8) ;)

If some winner comes around wanting his or her lamb---I'll redistribute them.

Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection

What's a Boy Cootie Carrier ?  ??? ???

And how did we progress from jar re-threaders to tongues?

Really, you people. You wouldn't catch me making oblique references to tongue work.
Don't know nothin 'bout that sort of thing.  ::)

Didn't you have cooties in school Rob? We had cooties. The boys said the girls had cooties, and the girls said the boys had cooties. We even had cootie shots!

Cooties were imaginary germs, bugs or smegma you would catch from the opposite sex. :P

We even had a little cooties singsong we would shout at the girls... and then they'd shout it back to us. But I can't remember how it went anymore.

I DO remember it was rather insulting though.

Yeehaw!!!  I get to add to my flock again! 8)  Thanks David! 8)  I'm just catching up with this after almost a week away from BetterMost.
