THIS IS NOT A CLUE OR HINT!!!

A spooky Halloween quote:

Cole Sear: I see dead people.

Malcolm Crowe: In your dreams?

[Cole shakes his head no]

Malcolm Crowe: While you're awake?

[Cole nods]

Malcolm Crowe: Dead people like, in graves? In coffins?

Cole Sear: Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're dead.

Malcolm Crowe: How often do you see them?

Cole Sear: All the time. They're everywhere.

It looks like "instrument for recording electronic voice phenomena" is the popular choice thus far.

Any other guesses?

Jess, aren't you going to take a guess at this one too?  :D

I'm excited about the idea of having a second black cat!  It would be fun for my current black cat (Vivien) to have a sibling. :)

Well, I voted 'White Noise Generator'.

The sort of thing electronics buffs make, just for the heck of it.
My Dad was one of those ... got him a lot of peace and quiet in the shed.

Anyway, it looks way too amateur to be anything as sophisticated as all those other contraptions

EMF for me.  So whoever else voted for that needs to change quickly. I have never ever been correct !!!

I keep suggesting a prize for the most wrong answers, it HAS to be me. I am so desperate for any prize, I will even accept a pretend prize. If nothing else it will stop me whinging !!!

Oh, this is a really good one, David! I voted for White Noise Generator. It looks to me like something that creates sound instead of recording it, but I know nothing at all about electronics (or any of those choices either), so it's just a total guess.

I'm excited about the idea of having a second black cat!  It would be fun for my current black cat (Vivien) to have a sibling. :)

I was thinking of that, Amanda!  There are a lot of black cat lovers here at Bettermost!   :)

Okay, off to Chrissi's quiz!

I should probably point out that MOST of those things listed in the poll are actually used in paranormal investigations. Remember, I said MOST of those. I may have made a couple of them up. ;)

It's got speaker and microphone plugs which hints to me that it's probably used for two-way conversations. For that reason, I chose Machine for speaking to spirits in other dimensions.   :D

It is time to reveal the answer to the Halloween "What Is It" question.....

We had one winner!

But they didn't tell who they are! So I cannot give them their kitty cat prize!  >:(

Whomever voted for "Machine for listening to ghosts and spirits speak to the living in real time" guessed correctly!

More specifically this device is called "Franks Box". Other names for it include "Ghost Speaker", "Ghost Receiver" and "Ghost Box".

Here is a picture of it without the blacked-out sections.....

Frank's Box consists of a random voltage generator, which is used to tune an AM receiver module rapidly. The audio from the tuner (raw audio) is amplified and fed to an echo chamber, where theoretically the spirits manipulate it to form their voices.

I found a couple of youtube clips that demonstrate the device in use. I cannot watch the videos (I'm on dial-up) but I think the second clip is from the show "Paranormal State" and I remember seeing it on television about a year ago.

Since the Frank's Boxes are usually built from scrap, (I think there is one or two companies which will build them on special order) they often do not look alike, but the principle of how they work is always the same. There has been some discussion to mass produce them in the future for use in paranormal investigations.

The following clip is 3-4 minutes in length....

The following clip is about 17 minutes in length....

Since only one person identified the device correctly, I will be giving out toy black cats to the rest of you!

Thanks to everyone for playing, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!! :D
