Tell us about your favorite spooky films!  What category of horror film do you like (thriller, gory, creepy, psychological, mild, etc.)?

I really dont care for scary movies.  I did watch them more often when I was younger.  I dont
like blood and guts stuff.  Im not a fan of watching spewing blood or chopped off body parts.  Therefor
I put a couple of psychological thrillers.. And I will put up my own choice of another scary movie you
didnt mention.  "Wait until Dark."  As you can see, I am more into the kind that are suspense filled, rather than the gotcha kind.

I voted for "Halloween" (the original, of course) as number 1, because at the time in the 70's, I was doing a lot of babysitting and was kind of a bookworm and insecure about myself, and really identified with the main character Laurie.  Also, I loved the creepy music, and the pervasive, ahead-of-its-time cinematography, such as the psychiatrist talking on the phone while the crazy escaped killer drives past in the station wagon, and the scene where all the lunatics are walking around the asylum in the darkness.  I thought it was a very clever film, and as on every Halloween ever since, I've already got it cued up in my VCR to start at dusk when the kids come calling.

Voted for "Carrie" as number 2 because her eyes scared the crap out of me, and her mother was so anti-mother material.  Plus I was in love with John Travolta / Vinny Barbarino at the time.

And "Amityville Horror" as number 3, once again because of the look of terror in Margot Kidder's eyes several times, and the scene with all the flies on the window just puts me into complete shivers every time.

I wish this poll allowed more than 3 choices, cause I've seen every scary movie ever, my parents put no reins whatsoever on my viewing pleasure as a kid in the 70's, and I could rate them from 1 to 30 if I had to.  My next closest would be "Poltergeist", "The Exorcist", "The Omen", "Jaws".  I would add several more that have been left out of the poll, let me think about it and get back.

Recent ones I've watched, and maybe they can't be classified in the poll are:

Rose Red - haunted house keeps growing and changing while visitors are trapped inside
Cold Creek Manor - killer trying to reclaim his family home by any means necessary
The Messengers - girl with troubled guilt sees evil all around her
The Others - widow of WW2 living in a darkened world with 3 servants who may or may not be alive

All of them had their moments of terror.

My all time favorite scary movie is The Haunting, 1963.  It's one of the most subtle and one of the most truly scary films I've ever seen.  It's primarily psychological (not gory or very explicit).  Not only is it a good scary film, it features some gorgeous and very innovative cinematography.  The film by Robert Wise (and starring Julie Harris) was based on the wonderful (and even more scary) book by Shirley Jackson called The Haunting of Hill House.

The other films I voted for on the list were The Sixth Sense and The Hunger.  There aren't a ton of horror films that I like very much.  But, The Haunting I think is a truly brilliant film in broadest sense.

Heya Mandy,

Of the ones you list here, I've only seen Cold Creek Manor, and that really is a good movie.  I recall it's pretty mild as far as scary movies go (which is just fine by me! :) ).  Actually, Cold Creek Manor is one of my Mom's favorite movies.

Oops!

I'm editing this because I just realized that I was thinking of a different film... the film I was thinking of (and the one that's one of my Mom's favorite films) is Cold Comfort Farm.

  I guess I was mixing up my "Cold..." films.

Poltergeist, The Shining and Jaws.

Another one of my favorites is Interview With the Vampire.

I love horror movies, but I don't like the ones that are too bloody. I don't like most of those slasher type movies. Some of the earlier ones were pretty good though, like Halloween. I saw Halloween at the theater back in 1978 with some friends and it scared the hell out of me. In fact, Halloween was the very first movie I actually drove to. I got my driver license just a couple of weeks before it was released. :)

This movie,  always gets a reaction from me.

I used to wait for the prom scene, and cheer Carrie on.

I used to wish I could do that.

The last time I watched it, I felt horribly bad for Carrie.

She had no one, and went to the one safe place she had, her home, and was attacked.

I watch this one when it comes on, too.  Saw it just last week.  Very creepy.  Although it was the sequal (Dawn Of The Dead) that truly terrified me as a kid, this movie is a great scare.

Do any of you remember an old black and white movie from the 1950s or early 1960s in which a woman has a terrible car accident and she gets her head cut off? Some man (a doctor or a scientist I think) finds her, takes her head home, places it in a pan and keeps it alive. That movies scared the fire out of me, not so much because it's scary, but because it is so strange and weird. It's a very freaky movie and it leaves you with a strange feeling once it is over. I can't remember the name of it though. :-\

The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962)

The unethical surgeon Dr. Bill Cortner (Herb Evers) is developing a technique of transplantation of organs and members using a serum against rejection. When he has a car accident with his girlfriend Jan Compton (Virginia Leith), he saves her head only, and tries to find a woman with a beautiful body to transplant Jan's head against her will.

Yup! That's the one!

:o :o

That movie gave me the chills. I remember seeing it on TV when I was about 12 years old and it left me with a very strange feeling once it was over. I've seen it once or twice since then, and I STILL get that weird feeling.

Thanks Chuck! You're good at these! You must be a die hard movie buff. :)

actually, I very rarely see movies.....I just never get around to it.

I've never see the "The Brain".......I did a quick Google search on "doctor keeps woman's head alive" and got some links to "The Brain" and checked them out.

I assumed it was the movie you were looking for, but I could've been wrong as well.

yes! that is it....

there is one point at the begining when Mann doesn't realize how serious it is...he thinks that he is just overreacting...and he thinks the trucker has left....

he is sitting at  a crossing waiting on a train, just chillin....when all of a sudden BUMP!! the truck is BEHIND him!! pushing him under the train!! he lays on the brakes, screaming!! but the truck is too big! and JUST as he is almost under the train the train track clears and he speeds off!

*Whew*

scary!

more cause it DOES happen...people DO have road rage...

and you NEVER see the trucker...just this big dirty truck!

Wow! I think I would really like that movie! :)

It sounds very similar to another movie I like but I can't remember the name of it!

It's about a trucker who gets pissed off and starts chasing some teens after they say something rude to him on the CB radio.

Joy Ride (2001)

The plot concerns Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker), a young man who decides to go cross-country to pick up his high school sweetheart, Venna Wilcox (Leelee Sobieski), from college. On his way there, he bails his brother, Fuller Thomas (Steve Zahn), out of jail. Fuller, looking for a good time, decides to ride with Lewis. During their trip to pick up Venna, Fuller coaxes Lewis into playing a cruel joke, through their CB radio, on a truck driver, known only as 'Rusty Nail' (voiced by Ted Levine). When the joke takes a deadly turn, Lewis, Venna, and Fuller find themselves being relentlessly stalked by the psychotic truck driver who is looking for more than an apology.

it was directed by Steven Spielberg...and has a lot of layers to it..

you really SHOULD get it. It was made back in the seventies I think but it really is good...one of my favorite quotes come from this movie...he stops to try to help a bunch of kids whose school bus has broken down...and looks up to see the truck sitting down the road...the engine reving...so he trys to get the kids out of the road, pushing and yelling at them....one little boy says "You are crazy outta your head!"

I voted ROSEMARY'S BABY.  Talk about Ruth Gordon being the banality of evil and all. I just thought she was a lonely next door neighbor being a surrogate mom to Rosemary as she's so concerned with how the pregnancy is going along and all. WHo would have thought she had ulterior motives.

And Rosemary's husband, is there anyone more amoral on film? Rosemary is such a nice, sweet girl and trusting girl.  The film is much more eerie then outright jump out your seat type film. But the suspense and what's it's about must have been really shocking to audiences in the 1960's. Can you imagine Time Magazine nowadays having a cover saying "IS GOD DEAD?." Rosemary sees that issue while waiting to see her doctor.

DUEL is also a good film.  It used to come on tv all the time in the 1970's.

I'm also a fan of THE RING.  I like it the more I see it.  I certainly wasn't expecting it to come walking right out of the tv.

Rosemary's Baby is almost too scary for me to even think about.  The film is scary enough.

But, then when you think about the super, super scary bio of Roman Polanski it takes the horror of the film and the things associated with it to a whole new level.  When you think about what happened to poor Sharon Tate and her unborn child thinking about Rosemary's Baby is almost too upsetting for words.

This from Polanski's imdb page:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000591/bio
Quote
In 1968, Polanski went to Hollywood, where he made the psychological thriller Rosemary's Baby (1968). However, after the brutal murder of his wife Sharon Tate by the infamous Manson gang in 1969, the director decided to return to Europe. In 1974, he again appeared with a US release of Chinatown (1974). It seemed the beginning of the promising Hollywood career, but after his conviction for the statutory rape of a 13-year old girl, Polanski fled from America to avoid prison.

But maybe I'll watch all of it since you said it's coming on again.

Well, like I said they will be reairing The Shining at midnight. You are in New Jersey, correct Chuck? So if you want to watch it, you should probably turn on A&E within the next 10 minutes because they will be showing it again. Right now they have Paranormal State on. I like that show too. Ryan Buell is soooo cute!!

No, it's not too edited. It's worth watching. They even showed the crazy woman! They blanked out her breasts and her privates, but they showed the scene. The curse words have been edited out, but they replaced them with other words and the editing was pretty good. It's worth watching. I'm going to watch it again! :)

REDRUM!!!

I just caught the end of it--in the maze.

But maybe I'll watch all of it since you said it's coming on again.

I KNOW!! That scene is sooo freaky!!

And that little Danny is such a cutie too! I don't think I've seen him in any other movies since The Shining, but he sure was a cute little boy.

I'm going to watch it again too Shasta!! We can watch it together! :)

I liked the first Halloween, Jaws, and Poltergeist.

They were scary.

Carrie was pretty scary too.

I liked Seven and Copycat--those are more like thrillers, I guess.

When someone is in a house and there is someone hiding--that's always scary to me!!!!! That's why I like having dogs--if someone's in the house, they're gonna bark. Good security system!

I just watched a really scary movie the other day. It was called "The Strangers". It just came out on DVD and a friend of mine let me borrow it. It scared the hell out of me. I can't even bear to think about it.

The Shining is back on now Shasta!

 ;D Okay!! Fun!

I'll try to stay awake---at least I can turn my clock back.

I got up early this morning to go to the bank because the bank president said he was going to leave papers for me to sign. (Something that has to be signed every year on a loan thing.) So I went, and he had not left it at the branch like he said!!!!!! I guess he was enjoying sleeping in tho.

SO---that's why I may not stay awake the whole time. But I'll check back here from time to time--maybe that will keep me up!  :P 8) :D

Hey--it's on now!! It's 11 here.

:o  It's scary enough driving on those windiing mountain roads--much less with Jack Nicholson acting freaky.

Shelley Duvall--is almost emaciated. Is she related to Robert Duvall? I'm gonna google her.

Jack Nicholson always does that to me! Whenever I see him eating something, I get hungry too. He has a way of making things look very appetizing when he eats. Does he do that to you too? I remember watching him eat something in "Terms of Endearment" and I thought "Man, that really looks good!" He also did it in "As Good As It Gets". In one of those movies he was eating oysters and I suddenly started craving them. And I don't even LIKE oysters!

I never could figure out the woman in the bathtub part. Is that woman the same woman as the crazy lady? Did she drown in the bathtub and then rose from the dead? She starts to sit up in the tub. The only thing though is the woman in the bathtub has short hair and the crazy lady (both the young and old version) have longer hair.

I've seen this move time and time again, and I never could figure out that part. Who is the woman in the bathtub? ???

*turns to David while holding his hand*

I always took it to be the same ghost.  She "made" herself pretty to seduce Jack....and when he saw the reflection, the spell was broken.

I had a film class, and we watched and discussed "The Shinning".  One thing that happens in the film that I never noticed (until the professor pointed it out) is Shelly Duvall's appearance in the movie.

At the beginning of the film, it's mentioned that the hotel is on an Indian burial ground.

At the beginning of the film, Shelly's appearance is ....urban.   Jeans and such.  As the film goes on, she starts to look more Native American.  Oversized ponchos with native prints, and a long ponytail.  At the end, her hair is parted in the middle, with two braids, and her outfit is very Native Americanesque.

So the dead woman floating in the tub, and the crazy woman (both young and old) are the same person? Maybe they are trying to explain to us how she drown? She drown in the bathtub. It's freaky when they show her slowly sit up in the tub.. coming back to life. I still can't figure out why she has short hair in the tub but longer hair when she seduces Jack. Maybe this is because some time has passed and her hair grew longer.

I never noticed that part about Shelly Duval either! Thanks for point it out. Now that you mention it, she does slowly appear more and more Native as the movie progresses.

Maybe she is the mom of the two girls--they all got redrum-ed.

That's a very good point too Shasta. She may have been the mother of the two girls. They show Grady, but they never show the mother.

Jess pops on and off. She may be back, or she may have gone to bed. She never answered my question though. I was wondering if she was watching the movie too. I doubt she was, because she doesn't like scary movies... or at least that is what she SAYS!

That is interesting. Why didn't I have a fun class like that?

My cat really doesn't have a farting problem. But when he does he stinks up the room.

Shasta is sitting there surrounded by animals. Are any of them farting tonight Shasta? Or are you in the clear thus far?

Oh, I found the scene, relatively quickly.

Ok...... bear with me.

The book of "The Shining" and the movie are two completely different things.  There are things in the book that don't happen in the movie, things in the movie that don't happen in the book.

In the movie, there is the party scene, where Jack is talking to the bartender.  In the book, during that scene, there is a man in a tux, and a man in a dog suit.  The tux man is giving the "dog" commands, and the dog is following them.

A spirit approaches and explains that the "dog" is gay.  Tux man is bisexaul.  Tux man is unable to decide to spend his time with a woman, or "dog".  The man in the dog suit wants Tux man all by himself.  So they made a deal.  He goes to the party dressed in a dog suit, and obeys his commands.

What you are seeing in the hotel room is what happens after the party.....it's an oral sex scene.

here is the "undedited version".

Oh WOW!! I didn't know that Chuck! Thanks for telling us about it!

OH! Ok -- I get it now, Chuck.

So you read the book?  Is it Stephen King?

YES!!! I enjoyed the company, ya'll. We will have to watch together again sometime soon--especially over Christmas break.

Sorry, Amanda.

Amanda--you are good-natured. I don't think you'd mind us watching a movie in your thread!  ;)

Night guys!

and before I go, yes Shasta, it was a book by Stephen King.  I'm not familiar with his new stuff, but I loved his older stuff, had a large number of his paperbacks.  The Shining was one of them.

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

Amanda, the thread is all yours again. I'm sorry if we hijacked it, but look on the bright side, your thread is now considered a "hot topic"! ;)

Now let's hear about some more of those favorite movies!

Which scary movies are your favorites?
