As you know, our intrepid moderator Meryl has been warming the frozen north with her fiery rendition of "Carmen" for the last few weeks.

Now, I don't know if any Alaskan celebs (you know who they are) attended, but I'm sure Meryl wowed them.

I think she's due back to NYC this week, so let's provide a warm welcome to her.

Next to Lypsinka, Varla Jean is, well, downtown.  She's a little hard to find; always riding someone something.

I truly had a mahvelous time in the frozen North.  I made some new friends on my first visit to North Pole, Alaska! 




And then there was the social life...they have some of the hardiest people up there! 




Oh, and the opera was a smash hit!  Here's a shot of me in rehearsal, helping Carmen achieve just the right amount of je ne sais quoi in her Act I tussle with Manuelita!

Oh my, I sure have missed you! I bet it feels good to be back in the best City on earth after having spent time up there in the frozen freezing north with the caribou and malamutes. Next it oughta be Mexico!

There's Frankfurt, Brussels and Amsterdam on the sign post in Alaska!

The first time I saw this type of sign post was in the TV series M*A*S*H




And look what I found while searching for a pic of the M*A*S*H sign post:

Great pictures, Meryl! Thank you for posting them. Signs do tell a history within a picture, and add a dimension....that first sign-post pointing back to NYC... and to Brussels!   And I think I about lost it at the Wasilla Public Library. No fires anywhere, I trust?

Hey! Sly Alaska has taken the North Pole for its own? While all the long while, Norway and Finland have been endlessly feuding over which one of those two nations has the right to the North Pole and its post office?!? I am schocked, horrified and dismayed!



 


But it does make my question about possibly seeing Santa up there even more relevant than I thought!

Thanks for noticing, Kelda!  Actually, I bought them shortly after the Wasilla pic was taken, in a charming little town called Talkeetna.  They're made of Alaskan rabbit fur.

Alas, no.  Was hopin' to see them when we were up in Fairbanks, but they didn't cooperate.  I got  sore from craning my neck to look out for them!

Wikipedia says the town was named that in 1953 to attract a toy manufacturer.  Now it attracts Santa fans and folks like me who want to send cards with the North Pole postmark!

EVERYONE knows the North Pole (magnetic, anyways) is in Canada and, I believe, Canada also has the (geographically) most northenly piece of land - so Santa definitively is Canadian.

(we got 'Santa' villages all over SOUTHERN Ontario too, so that don't mean much)

How could this not be one of my favorite old threads?     

Has it really been almost five years since my Alaskan debut?  I went back and did two more shows up north and wish I could go again; however, they've changed Artistic Directors, so now the new one is busy hiring his pals to direct the operas.  Oh, well, it was great while it lasted.  I still have my earmuffs to keep me warm!
