My Favorite Songs Of All Time - What A Mix
« on: November 22, 2008, 12:42:07 am »
My blog seems to contain a whole lot of music and that is because I like so much of it plus so many eras and styles. Some of them are things that are new now, some of them came out way before I was even born, and some of them are somewhere in the middle. At one point, on my blog, I tried to separate these into types, but it just didn't work so let's just go for a mix. So here as I find it I will post it and then maybe I can create a list at some point. Deciding on an order would be hard cause there is so much and so many differences. For each one I will put the words and hopefully a youtube video if one exists. And if I have a story behind the song I will add that as well.

Closing Time - Semisonic
« Reply #1 on: November 22, 2008, 01:16:57 am »
So for the first song and that is only because it is on the mixed CD that I am listening to is Closing Time by Semisonic, not because it is my favorite song of all time, although it would be somewhere on the list. This song represents so much of what everyone experiences in one way or another at a bar or nightclub at some point in their lives. Will you be leaving there with someone or will you be leaving by yourself? Is that person who is so attractive to you find you attactive as well? Will the lights come on and leave you standing up against the wall or will you be walking out the door with someone who is going to be someone who will be of the places who you will be from? Everything is a big question mark.

Closing Time by Semisonic

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="
&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Closing time
Open all the doors and let you out into the world
Closing time
Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every
girl
Closing time
One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or
beer
Closing time
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from
Closing time
This room won't be open till your brothers or your
sisters come
So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other
beginning's end

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other
beginning's end

Sex And Candy - Marcy Playground
« Reply #2 on: November 22, 2008, 01:29:43 am »
I remember hearing this song on the radio at work while eating lunch in the car and I thought it was the coolest song I had heard in a long time. It has remained one of my favorite songs. Sex And Candy by Marcy Playground

You have to click on this one to see the video:

Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think about myself
And then there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah there she was
Like disco superfly
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream

Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had too much caffeine
And I was thinkin' 'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah there she was
Like disco lemonade
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream
Mama this surely is a dream
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream
Mama this surely is a dream
Yeah mama this must be my dream

Hey Jude by The Beatles
« Reply #3 on: November 22, 2008, 02:05:22 am »
For the third song in my favorite songs blog it has to be Hey Jude by The Beatles. I was a kid when this song was popular, but it had a long lasting effect on me. I can actually remember somewhat when The Beatles came on and sang this on some variety show. I remember my parents talking about how they had become hippies. I thought they were so cool, especially John Lennon with the glasses and long hair. The song was incredible, but at the time it was not a good thing or so I was told. But even so I got my mother to buy me the 45 cause I went to the dentist The Apple on the record label was so cool. Revolution was on the flip side of the 45. That Christmas I got the White Album and when it was playing at my family's Christmas I got the idea that they did not think much of it. The Beatles were not very popular then with a lot of people including the kids at my school. I didn't really understand why but with me that made them more popular so I went out with every allowance I got and bought their old albums. I remember taking other records back to KMart to exchange for Beatles albums. My father said to take eveything I owned and exchange it for Beatles albums. I was a little late at Beatlemania. It seemed back then that I was too young for everything that was going on....lol

So here it is and I would say it is still number 1 with me since that is the song that made music so important to me and made me look at music from before and beyond..........This is actually the same video I think I saw.......

Hey Jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

Hey Jude, dont be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.

And anytime you feel the pain, hey jude, refrain,
Dont carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.

Hey Jude, dont let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey jude, begin,
Youre waiting for someone to perform with.
And dont you know that its just you, hey jude, youll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

Hey Jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then youll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

Na na na na na ,na na na, hey Jude...

Angel - Shaggy
« Reply #4 on: November 22, 2008, 02:39:44 am »
As I said, this will be a mixed up ride of music. This is a song that reminds me of a coworker that appeared one day to be a temporary roommate in my office that literally threw me off my feet for awhile. We became good friends and he even gave me his bad cold when he first arrived  >:( Anyway, I will never forget going to an ice hockey game with him and hearing this. Would you believe I still have dreams with him in it sometimes? I thought he was all that and more. Oh well, another married straight guy.......

Angel by Shaggy

You have to click on this one too:

Shooby dooby dooby doo woi
Shooby doo
Oh
Shooby doo dooby doo boi oi
Yeah, ah

Girl, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Closer than my peeps you are to me, baby
Shorty, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Girl, you're my friend when I'm in need, lady

Life is one big party when you're still young
But who's gonna have your back when it's all done
It's all good when you're little, you have pure fun
Can't be a fool, son, what about the long run

Looking back Shorty always mention
Said me not giving her much attention
She was there through my incarceration
I wanna show the nation my appreciation

Girl, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Closer than my peeps you are to me, baby
Shorty, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Girl, you're my friend when I'm in need, lady

You're a queen and that's how you should be treated
Though you never get the lovin' that you needed
Could have left, but I called and you heeded
Begged and I pleaded mission completed

Mama said that I and I dissed the program
Not the type to mess around with her emotion
But the feeling that I have for you is so strong
Been together so long and this could never be wrong

Girl, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Closer than my peeps you are to me, baby
Shorty, you're my angel, you're my darling angel
Girl, you're my friend when I'm in need, lady

Uh, uh
Girl, in spite of my behavior, said I'm your savior
(You must be sent from up above)
And you appear to me so tender, say girl I surrender
(Thanks for giving me your love)

Girl, in spite of my behavior, well, you are my savior
(You must be sent from up above)
And you appear to me so tender, well, girl I surrender
(Said thanks for giving me your love)

Now life is one big party when you're still young
And who's gonna have your back when it's all done
It's all good when you're little, you have pure fun
Can't be a fool, son, what about the long run

Looking back Shorty always mention
Said me not giving her much attention

Speaking of the same guy, this is the song that reminds me most of him. When he first moved into my office this is the song he played. Although this song had previous memories, the memories of him are the ones that remain now.......

Blue Monday by New Order

How does it feel
To treat me like you do
When youve laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are

I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now how do I feel

Those who came before me
Lived through their vocations
From the past until completion
They will turn away no more

And I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But Im quite sure that youll tell me
Just how I should feel today

I see a ship in the harbor
I can and shall obey
But if it wasnt for your misfortunes
Id be a heavenly person today

And I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now how should I feel

Now I stand here waiting

I thought I told you to leave me
While I walked down to the beach
Tell me how does it feel
When your heart grows cold
(grows cold, grows cold, grows cold)

So while we are on the same guy and the same year, Keith and 1986, we have to have the song that somehow at that time meant a lot to me. It is really strange how funny this video looks now considering it was cool then. Opportunities by The Pet Shop Boys

I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of -

I've had enough of scheming and messing around with jerks
My car is parked outside, I'm afraid it doesn't work
I'm looking for a partner, someone who gets things fixed
Ask yourself this question: Do you want to be rich?

I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of money

You can tell I'm educated, I studied at the Sorbonne
Doctored in mathematics, I could have been a don
I can program a computer, choose the perfect time
If you've got the inclination, I have got the crime

Oh, there's a lot of opportunities
If you know when to take them, you know?
There's a lot of opportunities
If there aren't, you can make them
Make or break them

I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
Let's make lots of -
(Aahhhhh) Money
(Aahhhhh)
(Aahhhhh - Di du da di da bu di ba)

You can see I'm single-minded, I know what I could be
How'd you feel about it, come and take a walk with me?
I'm looking for a partner, regardless of expense
Think about it seriously, you know, it makes sense

Let's (Got the brains)
Make (Got the looks)
Let's make lots of money (Oohh money)
(Let's) You've got the brawn
(Make) I've got the brains
Let's make lots of money (Oohh money)

I've got the brains (Got the brains)
You've got the looks (Got the looks)
Let's make lots of money (Oohh money)
Money

Johnny Cash and June Carter - Jackson
« Reply #8 on: November 22, 2008, 03:50:16 am »
And then we go way back in time to Jackson............

We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.

Well, go on down to Jackson; go ahead and wreck your health.
Go play your hand you big-talkin' man, make a big fool of yourself,
Yeah, go to Jackson; go comb your hair!
Honey, I'm gonna snowball Jackson.
See if I care.

When I breeze into that city, people gonna stoop and bow. (Hah!)
All them women gonna make me, teach 'em what they don't know how,
I'm goin' to Jackson, you turn-a loose-a my coat.
'Cos I'm goin' to Jackson.
"Goodbye," that's all she wrote.

But they'll laugh at you in Jackson, and I'll be dancin' on a Pony Keg.
They'll lead you 'round town like a scalded hound,
With your tail tucked between your legs,
Yeah, go to Jackson, you big-talkin' man.
And I'll be waitin' in Jackson, behind my Jaypan Fan,

Well now, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper Sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went.
I'm goin' to Jackson, and that's a fact.
Yeah, we're goin' to Jackson, ain't never comin' back.

Well, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout'
And we've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went...

Well to go way back up in time from Jackson.........we move to 2000, well actually 1997.......when a movie came out with a song that made me know I wanted more from life than what I had at the time. It featured characters known as Jack and Rose on board of a doomed ship, the Titanic. The love between Jack and Rose was characteristic of the love that was not supposed to happen in another movie named Brokeback Mountain between Jack and Ennis that came along later. Rose was wealthy and not supposed to fall in love with a poor guy like Jack, Ennis was a cowboy who was not supposed to fall in love with another man like Jack. In both situations Jack died. Rose never forgot, Ennis never forgot.

On November 25th, 2000 I found a guy that just happened to be online that changed the course of my life. Five years later I figured out that this guy was my Ennis and remains my Ennis to this day. I guess that will never change. Our song then and still is My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion As far as music goes it is difficult to say if the song "Hey Jude" which I consider the song that introduced me to music remains my favorite song compared to this one. It is hard to say also if Brokeback Mountain replaces Titanic as my favorite movie. In both cases the entries are so close and mean so much to me that I don't really want to make a decision.

So here is My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion

Click on the link for the video........

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you,
That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear,
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

It's time to add a few songs to my favorite songs of all time. How am I going to keep up with all of these  :)

Here is a song that I liked from the very first time I ever heard it and I have never got tired of it. There is something about the sound of this song I have always loved. Since I figured out how to add youtube songs if they don't work I am not putting the words in for now..........

What It's Like by Everlast

I remember first hearing this song in the parking lot in front of Sears at the Asheville Mall when I worked there. It hadn't been long since I went with my parents to New Orleans for the first time on the way to my sister's house in Houston. This to me was a New Orleans sounding song and I have no idea whether it was ever meant to be or not, but I immediately found out who it was by and what the song was. It helped that I was working in the record department at Sears and I did love that job. And this is one of those where you have to click on the link........this is stupid YouTube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really could not find a good YouTube of this song, so I guess this will have to do. Put yourself back into the early 1990s and this was a song that I would say let's get out out on the dance floor. Beyond that it reminds me of my manys days in Winston-Salem, NC with Jimmy and Rick..........times that will never be forgotten.......

Ever wonder where Rap first started? Well here is a good start............I'm not even sure anyone knew that this song was the first of what would become a new type of music. At the time it was just a new song, but the future was yet to be...............

My thread seems to be going off in other directions cause I would not consider some of these songs my favorite songs of all time........so consider some of these extras as you would on things like America's Top 40......hey my dream job at one time was to be a DJ or a program director for a radio station. So now those of you tuning into my site get to be the guinea pigs for that.

But there is a memory for this song for me. When I belonged to a hiking/camping group back in the 90s I met a guy named Chuck in Blowing Rock. This song was popular then. The first time I saw Chuck at the B & B he was working at I thought he was the greatest. And apparently the attraction was mutual cause we ended up getting close very fast. That night of the day I met him we went walking around in Blowing Rock at a lake. We talked about so many things and he told me he was in love with me. Of course in reality that really ended up meaning nothing cause Chuck was confused as so many of us are. I can't say I was in any better shape cause in reality I was still in love with the the guy, the "bad" relationship, I was in. I don't really know if Chuck could have changed that.

He was so much in love with me, or so I thought, we talked every night on the phone. I went back to Blowing Rock and I think I went back before he was really ready. I think I scared him off by coming back too fast. He was a shy guy. While he was at work I went to the small mall that was in Boone at the time. I bought him a teddy bear to always remember me by. I think that was too much too quick for him at the time, but I was still kind of young I guess and I didn't know any better I guess.

I did see him again and was with him again not too long after that at my house, but I never really knew what Chuck was thinking. But at one time I truly felt I was in love with him. The last I heard years ago was that he was in Charleston, but again that was years ago.

And one other thing that I will never forget about Chuck is that when the group was hiking at the rocky part beside Grandfather's Mountain, we went over a part where you had to jump from one tilted rock to another. There was nothing under that tilted rock to catch you or you would fall to your death for sure. I could not do it......I was too afraid......Chuck stood on that tilted rock to make sure I could make it across. I will never forget that.

And so here is a song that reminds me of that period of time although I think there were other songs that probably might fit better. Here is: (and another one you have to click on the link)

I Touch Myself by The Divinyls

And then going forward in time........the Signal Mountain Lodge in Wyoming. This song was playing at a store where someone and I went to by some things before we left. I told him that this song would always remind me of this trip and it still does and always will. The feelings were only for that part of time and only for that part of time. They did not and were not ever meant to continue on although I would never change that part of my life. It is one of those things that will remain in my memory and remain important to me for the rest of my life. Again, you have to click on the link.........

So I guess for the last song tonight it will have to be the new song by Nickelback.........Gotta Be Somebody.........

I guess anyone who reads my thread or blog would know that is the one I always talk about from Texas, but although I talked him tonight just as always, he is still as far away as he has always been and I don't see that changing. Why? I don't really know. When it all boils down to it, it is the same as why we are all here, Brokeback Mountain. He can never change or free himself of the life that he is in regardless of how much he may want to.

Thinking about the age factor........after my aunt's funeral today I thought about the songs my cousin Linda and I listened to when we were kids and this song came to mind......it's kind of funny we wished we were their age at the time instead of kids..........course neither of us are nowhere near young now, but look at this and the next post. Age is going to get all of us so think about it, it will happen and we cannot control it........

It is amazing how dated this video looks. I don't think the song is though. I saw this group as a warm up to Billy Idol with my ex and his best friend from high school in Charlotte, NC. This group absolutely blew away Billy Idol. The Cult released a new CD about a year ago, but they never achieved the success they deserved. Here is:

I hate when YouTube does this.........cause I have to write again what I did before. Is it not time for another company to appear like Youtube that has not been taken over by a monopoly????? Anyway, you have to click cause someone didn't want their inferior video to be stolen. Here is Alice Cooper when Alice Cooper was Alice Cooper. Please let us hope that Marilyn never becomes a golfer.......

I spoke earlier in this thread about the beginnings of Rap.......well here is some of the beginnings of Punk......a really cool group The New York Dolls with "Personality Crisis"......not only did they provide a beginning of punk, they also provided some gender bending there......

I can't really have the one song by Canned Heat without the other which is "On The Road Again"..........Canned Heat may look like a bunch of old hippies, but I have their CD and they are very good.

Another song from Canned Heat........probably a group none of you know......but they had a very unique sound, a very New Orleans sound.......they were definitely more than a bunch of hippies........Here is "Let's Work Together"

So now I am really going to get a disapproval because this is Marilyn Manson with "Sweet Dreams." I know there are some that are wondering how in the world I can go from one time period to another time period and from one style of music to another type of music. To me music is all music regardless of when it is from or what type of music it is. I don't really categorize it. If I like it, I like it.

And as we get into the harder and more recent songs..........here is Atreyu with "Lip Gloss and Black........yes I know it sounds like very hard rock but listen to the next song from around 1970. And by the way I have no idea why this song is coming up advetising Wyoming flights and things.........maybe Atreyu are Brokies :-)

Back in the day when I thought and all my friends made me think country wasn't cool I stayed away from it........although I did secretly like some country songs  ;) But Dolly Parton became cool with everybody because she released a song that wasn't supposed to be country. Well, in reality, it probably was, but it was accepted as cool cause it wasn't "country." But listening to it, why was it less country than her previous songs? The song is:

Here You Come Again by Dolly Parton

And speaking of San Francisco......who would have ever thought that this song would be the one that reminds me of my visit there? Well I'm sure it wouldn't be the gay guy when we went to Castro with the weird little dog on the leash who was totally offended that I had a Dallas police department t shirt on. Ok, let's not get into that, but why is it that I am fine in any city until I get into a gay section and then I have problems  ;D Now, this song was playing in heavy rotation at Sundance, which is a gay Country and Western bar, not in Castro (thank God). Anyway, the song is:

Because of You by Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson

So I guess we need a song to end the night so why not pick another one by
Willie.....and this song gets that honor of being definitely being one of my favorite songs of all time for sure. You take me loving blue eyes and combine that with one of my favorite singers and throw in all this song is and it would always end up high in my chart of top songs.

And from one of the hair bands of the 80s...Great White with Rock Me.....and please do not blame this group for the disaster at the The Station in Rhode Island. It was not their fault for the faulty surroundings the owners put in place. Don't forget that they lost a band member to this disaster in addition to all the other victims. It was horrible, but it was not the bands fault.

I wanted to end with a Christmas song and I was going to pick "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon and I realized that even today the song is too controversial so I did not post it. Then I saw "Give Peace A Chance" by John Lennon and again that might be too controversial. It's strange that although John Lennon was killed so many years ago that his songs are still too controversial for so many people. And then I realized WHY the college students are still listening to the Beatles and John Lennon..........it really is still not their time to be accepted.......interesting.........so here is "Imagine" and I apologize if this offends anyone....

And while we are on Justin Timberlake, here is another one, you know I think I should start a crazy, mixed up radio station on Live  ;D. Nobody would have any idea what might come up next and I sure do have the music collection to pull it off.

You know how there are those summer songs.......well this would have been the one for me for the summer of 2008......

Summer Love by Justin Timberlake

There ain't no point in going into it too far. This is just a good song and if Chuck that used to live in Blowing Rock ever sees this, it reminds me of you. Thanks for blocking that hole between the rocks at Grandfather Mountain so that I could get across. Without you I really don't know how I would have done it. I will never forget you and the time we spent together.
