With being away at the house and not being home to pick up my mail (a neighbor does that for me), I'm now an issue behind. I'm now reading the Feb. 3 article about fighting the California wildfires. This article is actually interesting to me because I'm a great fan of the TV show "Fire Country," where the characters are members of Cal Fire, the state fire fighting organization, and the article is confirming for me how accurate the TV show is when it comes to the details of the characters fighting fires. For example, the show began with one of the characters as a convict earning time off his sentence by volunteering as a fire fighter; this is actually true, not just something made up for the TV show.

I've complained often enough about TNY's odd and inconsistent practice of capitalization in the case of direct quotations that are complete sentences.
Here's a sentence from another source:

The quotation is from the Roman Catholic bishop who chairs the Committee on Migration of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, but it's included in a Perspective article in the Sunday edition of the hometown newspaper--an article written by a retired university professor.
(In addition to the lack of capitalization of the "A," note the lack of a comma after the word "said.")
There is no hope. :(

The 100th anniversary issue arrived today! This is a real keeper. Unfortunately, I don't have time to read it right away but I leafed through it and there are quite a few articles I look forward to reading. Congratulations, The New Yorker!
