How do you consecrate a new home?
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:40:44 am »
What are some ideas for blessing a new living space?

I've read that burning sage is supposed to be positive (especially if it comes from Wyoming or Alberta!)   ;)

And there's an idea of keeping a broom at the front door, maybe to sweep out negativity or evil spirits or something?

And I think in Feng Shui, you're supposed to have a little jar or something as you enter for spare change to promote prosperity.

I've done a lot of moving about the past few years, and I typically put my Brokie paraphernalia out first - the dozy embrace refrigerator magnet, little blue enamel cup containing assorted rocks, a shell and a blue marble, place the short story autographed by Brokie friends and the DVDs in positions of note.

What other things have you done? or heard about?

No offense intended, anybody, but one take I've heard on this one is that it's so any witch who happens by will hop on it and fly away and not trouble the house or anyone in it.

Obviously that's a very prejudiced interpretation. ...  :-\

'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

In one of Kerry's threads, where he's describing his collection of gods, he mentions that it is traditional to have a Ganesh facing the front door.

Ganesh, the elephant-headed Indian god, is, among other things, the Lord of Beginnings.

Mom always placed a broom out on the front porch. She hung it on a clip next to the front door.It was one of those small straw brooms with a wooden handle - about 3 feet in length.

She used to place acorns on the windowsills too. She said they would protect the house from lightening strikes. I think it's an old Native American superstition and I'm not really sure how acorns would ward away lightening strikes, but she swore by it and to my knowledge lightening never struck our house. :-\

And yes, sage is used for house blessings. Mom always kept a few smudge sticks in a drawer and she would burn some on New Years Day. We also smudged the Nativity scene on Chistmas Eve with the sage.

I like the idea of placing a jar near the front door Lynne. That's a good idea. I'm not OVERLY superstitious, but I figure why not... it's better to be safe than sorry.

Smudge the place first.  White sage is good, sweet grass as well, while walking around the inside from front door all the way around and back to the front door while - chanting/praying/doing whatever you feel will help you accomplish your goal .  Then asperse the house with water and I like to use a sprig of fresh rosemary to do it, chanting/praying, etc following the same path.  Then finally sprinkle salt around the home and sweep it out.

Then of course, bring in symbolic food for the home, wine and bread.

This always works for me.
