The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
« on: March 31, 2006, 07:59:43 pm »
I just saw this on the evening news...apparently, it was a huge April fool's joke in 1957 -- I never heard of it but it is funny. Enjoy!

You ... you ... you mean sphaghetti doesn't grow on bushes?

I saw the story on the NBC evening news. Very funny! Leave it to the Brits!

Leslie,

What a hoot! Well, uncanny as it may seem,  I saw this as a child on American Television over forty years ago, on the Jack Paar show.

Americans were thought to be too familiar with 'spaghetti' (sophisticates all, now, we say 'pasta' instead) to fall for the hoax, so rather than being presented as an April Fools joke, it was presented at the expense of our supposedly clueless UK cousins--"Can you believe they fell for this," etc.

I remember falling over in giggles. My father, who had NO sense of humor, roared with laughter. I would occasionally mention it to people, but no one had ever heard of it--

Thanks for posting!

Okay,  now I have "The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest" to watch every year on April 1.

Back on New Year's, I was laughing uproariously at "Dinner for One" which I also never heard of. Here is a good story:

http://www.slate.com/id/2133551/

which has a link to the video.

and here's the IMDb link.

I don't know, it's been a very wet and rainy winter. Not good for spaghetti growing....

Better invest in spaghetti futures, then. Spaghetti ought to go sky high this year.  ;D

This thread REALLY helps me realize that we've been together for years.

Hey, the Tremblayan exodus to BetterMost began March 30th, 2006.  Is there a commemorative thread anywhere about that?  Happy 2nd anniversary, Buds!

Believe it or not...I saw the original when Jack Parr hosted the Tonight Show.

You mean it's time to pick the spaghetti already?  :o

How quickly time passes!

I wonder how the crop is this year? Should I invest in spaghetti futures, do you think?

Wow!  Ang, I'm so impressed that you've found his way to BetterMost!  Thanks for diving right in to participate in Spaghetti Day!

Now that folks know you're here... I'm sure there will be lots of questions for you from curious Brokies.  :D

I'll start with one... how deliberate was the use of coffee pots and buckets in so many of the shots and scenes in Brokeback?
And, here's another... what are your feelings about loaves of bread, and how they're packaged?

I have another question for Ang... how many takes were involved in shooting tent scene 1 and 2?  There's been a lot of longstanding speculation about that.

There is now a thread for these kinds of questions!  That would be a great one, since a lot of us have been puzzled by that one.
