Ang Lee and "Top 25 Active Directors"
« on: February 19, 2009, 12:41:08 pm »
Heya!

I just discovered this list from Entertainment Weekly linked through the CNN website.

Our Ang Lee has been named no. 21 out of 25 top active film directors according to this list.

Here's a link to the section about Lee.

It's accompanied by this shot of him directing the post-divorce scene!  :D

Did you check out the rest of the list - a bunch of nobodies.

No wonder fewer people are going out to the movies ... if those are the best around.

Most of the names I recognized were in the top 10.
2015 - Toronto: Pan Am Games
2015 - Edmonton, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg: Woman's World Cup of Soccer

Nobodies!?  It's all the biggest names!  Iin Hollywood anyway.  Anyway they are all well known.

I just read that Ang Lee is in negotiations to bring THE LIFE OF PI to the screen.  That's something to look forward to.

Maybe now I'll finally read it.  I've been meaning to since it came out.

Thanks for posting this, Amanda.  Naturally, I believe Ang Lee deserves to be higher than #21... :o ::) ;)

Oh, that would be great!!  I could imagine Lee doing something really interesting with The Life of Pi.  I read it a long time ago on the enthusiastic recommendation of both of my parents.  It's a really interesting book, I also highly recommend it.

p.s. Lynne your post came in as I was writing this... yes, I had the same reaction that Lee should have been higher on the list.  Of course.

Ang Lee to head Venice Film Festival jury

Feb 27th, 2009 | VENICE, Italy -- Director Ang Lee, who twice won the Venice Film Festival's prestigious Golden Lion award, will head its jury this year.

The Taiwanese-born director won the award in 2007 for "Lust, Caution,"  and in 2005 for "Brokeback Mountain,"  for which he also won a best directing Oscar.

The festival made the announcement Friday. Last year's jury was headed by German film director Wim Wenders.

This year's film festival will be held Sept. 2-12.

The ordering  of EW's 'Film Directors' list is a little bit, um, perversely eccentric, I have to say....

Now this made me go woot! Should be interesting.

I saw the EW list of directors some days ago and just rolled my eyes at it. Even as a die-hard "Rings" fan I'm not at all sure that Peter Jackson deserves the second place. And as for Ang Lee's modest placement, that's nonsense. They must be judging the directors largely on how much cash they've raked in.

Maybe his mental/emotional age?

Maybe his mental/emotional age?

LOL!  ;D

But seriously, whatever has Chris Nolan done to deserve his placement? The list of film's he's made.... OK, again with the raking in the cash. That has to be the main criteria here.

I am very curious to see how Peter Jackson's "Lovely Bones" will be. Whether he'll manage the return to a restrained and intimate depiction of ordinary settings, everyday lives and strong human emotions after those various SFX-riddled mega-blockbusters. King Kong IMO saw the director indulging himself in Special effects extravaganza to a downright embarrassing degree. Enough T-Rexes, already!  ::)

I didn't say I agreed with the list, just that they are all well known directors..  Several shouldn't even be on the list IMO, (*cough* Ron Howard *cough*!) but I wouldn't call them nobodies.  BTW, what was Cameron's last movie? Titanic from '97?  ::)  Believe me, my list would be toally different with less Americans.

Agreed! Where are the Italians, the French, the Japanese? Oh, this is a list of active directors. Never mind.

I just heard that Ang's latest, Taking Woodstock, will be shown in Berkeley California on March 16. I wonder if any Bay Area Brokies will go??
