OK, so who else is thinking of leaving then?
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:15:32 pm »
I'm not  ;).

Just saw BBM tonight on my DVD, on my own, in the dark of my sitting room, for the 11th or 12th time in all (I am losing track).
I broke up as hard as on my early viewings in the theater, which to tell the truth had not happened since I bought the dvd. I wonder if that is because I had starved myself of BBM for too long (several weeks), or because I could measure how far down the road I have gone, towards "finishing the story" in my own life.
Even though a new way of living is dawning for me, Brokeback Mountain remains the magical spark to it all. This board, after IMDb, remains the place where I met so many people of whom I have grown very fond; people who helped me survive the deep sorrow and the then incomprehensible pain I felt, like so many others, after seeing BBM.

You bet I ain't leaving  ;)

May I join you two?  They'll have to pry my keyboard from my cold, dead hands before I leave this place.

(Sorry.  Just channelling Charleton Heston there for a moment.)

I'll bring the whiskey and the can opener.  Say if your there.  :)

Hey y'all! That's neat. Let's party party party! Barb, I'll bring the beans (lived in the UK long enough to get to like them), and this time I'll try to go slow on the whiskey or you'll be calling 911 in less time than you need to say "I bet". OR I'll be slipping into a tent with one of you and Jake only knows what might happen next :o ;D

Still here.

Isabelle,

I haven't watched BBM since my DVD came in...when was that?

Believe me, I totally understand where you're at.

I know that when I watch it again, it will hit me like a Mack truck.  I barely caught a quick trailer for the movie on a commercial for On Demand TV last week and I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach, I was upset for sometime after...and that was just a commercial!!

Hunh ???

Sorry.  Just a little private joke RouxB and I share.  For the folks not living in the USA and/or with no experience with it, The Weather Channel is sort of a joke to those of us living in Hurricane Central and Tornado Alley.  They take themselves way too seriously this time of year around such parts.

You shut up about The Weather Channel!  This ain't its fault!

Seriously, it used to be one of my favorites.  It was nearly coma-inducing, and I liked that.  But now they've gone all Hollywood.  It just isn't the same.

(I may be younger than you by one year - to the day - but dammit, I still love my Weather Channel.)

Tell you what, the truth is, after I go away for ten days for vacation next month, I don't know if I'll be back.

Oh, I won't wait four fuckin' years to send a damn postcard, but I've pretty much said all I have to say about ol' Brokeback, Ennis and Jack have become such a part of me that they're with me always, and I'm just a mite disillusioned with some of the incivililty that's been creepin' into some of the cracks in this here community.

I got me a situation here, got to figger out what to do. ...  ???

I'm sitting here, trying to pack for my trip tomorrow but checking things out before I go.  I hope that if I were ever to have a disagreement with someone that bothered me that much that I could try to work it out before ditching this place.  I've avoided people that didn't particularly interest me, and stuck with the folks who have come to mean something to me.

So when I get back, I'm gonna make it a point to be on more and hopefully get to know some of the newer people that I don't know yet.  And rest my weary head in the laps of those that I do know...   :-*

Jeff, you're my Voice of Reason.  I love how you come into a lengthy discussion and simply put it all in perspective, short and sweet, with a tinge of your trademark humor.  You're the one who helped get the Cult off the ground, with your talk of sacred garments and flattened harmonica rituals.  You're the one who can flourish an "interesting garnish" and try on hot leather garments without batting an eyelash.  You know the secret bandanna code.  You have the greatest smile a Brokie ever smiled (see below).  If you quit me,  I'll have to go live in a beat up trailer and drink reheated coffee and pee in the sink, and I'm just not cut out for that.  So let's have no more talk like that,  y'hear?    :-\

Well I think a lot of us have been feeling bruised by that.  Now that we can acknowledge and recognize it we need to work on overcoming it.  Mainly by keeping private issues private and not letting ourselves be drawn into other peoples private drama's even when we are encourage to chose sides.  We are in control here, unlike IMDb, this is only as good as we want it to be, only as nice as we make it.

I'm here, even if it means peeing in the sink (which girls can do, we just have to turn around to do it).  And remember, like Ennis does, to turn the water on first.

You know, there is some stuff on BetterMost I'm just not interested in, and people I may not ever choose to hang out with, but BetterMost is plenty big enough for all of us.  And though there may be occasional incivility, Jesus H, ain't nuthin' compared to all the lovely chat, and dignified discourse, and witty repartee, and goldurn wonderful foolishness that I love so much.

I think that I have heard a resolve creep in between the lines of your posts. Yesterday I was pretty confused.  Reading around on the boards and knowing something was up and not being able to figure who said what to whom and why it was so bad..i have had my nose in my watergarden and work and haven't been here too much the last few weeks, so maybe i missed something, and truly i'm glad i did, cuz...its not my problem to worry about or solve...isn't there enough tension "out there", isnt there enough strife, enough fear, enough parinoia, enough mean spirited people who REFUSE to agree to disagree...isn't there just too many people who take everything too seriously and go off in a huff and write others off with no chance of redemption?? I for one think so...and I don't want anyone to interject those things here, where i have found my Brokie soulmates in many of you...i echo what   JC says...NO WAY would I leave here...no way, you work through your troubles, you just turn your back on the incivility, refuse to participate IGNORE it, and it will not touch you...
i too commit to be here more and to get to know more of you...thats how we will stay strong and overcome the temptation to bicker and act like children.....
Jeff, you won't leave, you can't quit us....we need you here on the mountain...truly...In my day...that was the Peace sign...all hippy peace and love....those were the good old days....someday these will be too....
I'll quote...ENOUGH.....lets head on back to the mountain, make a daisy chain, toke up, drink up and have a good old LOVE IN!!! ::)

My mom once sat on a sink in the ladies' room of Burke's restaurant and the sink broke off the wall.  Boy was she mortified.  Good thing she was not attempting a piss, just chatting and putting on lipstick and stuff.

(This is TMI, but I did manage the sink maneuver in a pension in Germany once, where the bathroom was a mile away and it was the middle of the night.  But that was many years and many pounds ago.  I'd probably rip the sink out of the wall if I attempted it now.)

I am most definitely here. Only next week in particular I won't be here (going out of town). So if you don't see me for a while, it won't be for any big dramatic emotional reason. It will be because my Super 8 doesn't have internet access.

I will be back in a week, posting like LaShawn on fast-forward.

Yes you will Katherine, and I can't wait to see & hear all about your new exploits.

Don't know if I can promise the same, but I am borrowing a digital camera to (hopefully) record a few images of the scenery during my trip into the Canadian Shield, as I too will be gone for nearly a week. (sorry for the temporary pause in posting of hot guys on "Anything Goes"). For sure Isabelle I'll be back after that to continue where I left off.

Burke's restaurant...back when I was a brand new nurse, working evenings at Johns Hopkins Hospital...we'd go there after work for a drink and onion rings. Man, they had the most fanstastic onion rings...do they still? This was almost thirty years ago.

This thread is making me laugh out loud at about every post.  Woooo-eeee, I love you guys.  (Sarah, my brother recently told me a story about a woman who broke a toilet off the wall of a restroom in a bar, and not because she was too heavy - it just wasn't attached very well.    :o )

Neato, Maine!

Burke's Restaurant is still going strong by the way, although I've never actually been there.  I just think "that's mommy's sink restaurant" when I pass it, which is about three times a week.

One category of my recurring dreams is bathroom-fixture malfunctions and mishaps, and this overlaps with another category, which is being caught with my pants down in a bathroom.  For example, I'll be looking for a bathroom stall that has a locking door and a decently clean toilet -- stall after stall, maybe wandering into another, less frequently used part of the bathroom, perhaps, in search of a toilet.  I'll find one, whip down my pants and get ready to do my business, when suddenly the stall walls fall away, or I realize I made a mistake and the toilet is in the middle of a sales floor in a department store, or it's in a MEN'S room.  I can't stay there on the toilet, but I can get up because my pants are down!  This happens over and over again.  Occasionally I decide to take a bath or shower, and something similar happens.  And fixtures that won't turn off -- like I decide to draw a bath for myself in a house that isn't mine, and I come back to the bathroom and the water is about to crest over the lip of the tub --- total horror.

By the way I hope y'all realized that telling sinks mishaps is my way of saying I'm staying.  I don't have a lot, but I have my dreams, memories, reflections.

Awww, this is certainly a heartwarming thread!  It's very reassuring to hear all of you say you're stayin' around.  You're all stuck with me for a long time to come.  I can't imagine leaving BetterMost.  It's now thoroughly part of my daily routine and I don't know what I'd do without all the good Brokeback discussions and good friends.

Not to get philosophical or anything ... :P, but the way I see it is, there is a time to come and a time to go.  As much as we would all love to be here forever, some of us will come to a time when we feel it is time to move on, just because it's time... that is inevitable.

What counts to me is making the most of the now that we all got goin' here. ;)
I too have made some great friends here and continue to get to know more people.
This here is a great cyber-community and all in all, it's a sweet life and I'm lovin' it one day at a time!  :-*

First, I love your dreams, Sarah, and how you tell them.

Second, this place is so much what we make it.  There's no sphere of human activity without some drama from time-to-time.  Different folks feed off of different energies, so it's pretty predictable that there will be eruptions and changes.  I don't see some massive change reflected here - just a few people caught up in a drama of their own making.

But this isn't a forum defined by anyone but ourselves.  It's our own participation that shapes the conversations, interactions, and meaning.  It's easy enough to create something here if you want it, or disappear if you don't.  There are new voices emerging and old ones growing quiet ~ just like real life.

We know how much we've come to mean to each other in our own ways, in our own spheres, and how we need that to continue or not.  I make no pronouncements here other than to say this is a community that still has relevance in my life.  How and why keeps changing.

But I'm not too worried about what that means.  For all the changes in my life over the last 6 months, I continue to enjoy pulling up the rocking chair on the porch here, having a cup a coffee and a piece a cherry cake with y'all, and just hanging.  And sometimes I have something to say, and sometimes I got nothing.  But it seems fine either way.

I'm going nowhere. I'm in here.

I like this place very much. And here are many people I like and whose postings I appreciate.

I don't have a clue what this fuss is all about, because I don't have enough time to stay up to date with everything what's going on here.
I even don't have the time to stay up to date with all the great threads I would like to participate, because there are plenty of them on Bettermost.

Please feel free to do with this as your wish, but it has an effect....

Mercury Retrograde

On July 4, 2006, Mercury, the cosmic magician, turns retrograde in Leo, the sign of the Lion, sending communications, travel, appointments, mail and the www into a general snarlup! This awkward period begins a few days before the actual turning point (as Mercury slows) and lasts for three weeks or so, until July 29, when the Winged Messenger reaches his direct station. At this time he halts and begins his return to direct motion through the zodiac.

Everything finally straightens out on August 12, 2006, as he passes the point where he first turned retrograde. Mercury turns retrograde three times a year, as a rule, but the effects of each period differ, according to the sign in which it happens (see box for Retrograde Periods in 2006).

A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. This traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth, with relation to other planets in our solar system. Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way, due to this optical illusion.

Fated Events
As a rule, retrograde planets presage a period of seemingly inevitable or fated events, which relate to their sphere of influence. They present us with a series of events over which we seem to have little or no control, relating especially to the sign in which the retrogradation occurs. For example, Mercury retrograde in Leo presents quite different sets of circumstances from those generated when it retrogrades into Cancer.

A retrograde period is best seen as a cycle, beginning when the planet begins to slow to a halt before travelling backwards through the zodiac and ending when the planet returns to the point where it first paused. However, during the cycle, the planet's energy is most powerful (and more likely to generate critical events of universal importance) when the planet makes a station, appearing motionless in the sky.

These stationary periods occur near the beginning of the cycle (when the planet first halts as it prepares to move backwards) and midway through the cycle when the retrograde planet slows to a stop before moving forward again. The "direct station" (when the planet halts before moving forward again) is the most powerful and can be used for maximum benefit.

Some astrologers consider that the "Mercury Shadow" begins some three weeks before the actual retro station (when Mercury passes the point of direct station for the first time), but I am more inclined to think that the really noticeable peculiarities begin when Mercury slows significantly, a few days before the retro station. This period of "Mercury Shadow" extends to the Return date, some three weeks after the direct station. Bear this in mind, because experience shows that the effects of the retro period are still marked during the "shadow" phase.

What does Mercury affect?
In general, Mercury rules thinking and perception, processing and disseminating information and all means of communication, commerce and transportation. By extension, Mercury rules people who work in these areas, especially people who work with their minds or their wits: writers and orators, commentators and critics, gossips and spin doctors, travellers, tricksters and thieves.

Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray, or awry.

It is therefore not wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is very likely that these decisions will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde, these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual, as the critical faculties are dimmed.

The Key Issue
The key issue here is one of focus. Mercury's retro phase tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages, but the aggravation and frustration that many of us experience during these periods is often due to our own inability to roll with the punches. Is this due to our ego-fixation? Mercury sets out to restructure our thinking processes and for many of us this is painful and frustrating. Moreover, these experiences reveal flaws in our internal organisation as well as our external planning, which can make us feel foolish and inadequate.

Mercury retrograde, like any cosmic aspect, affects people differently, depending on where it hits their personal charts. Some people actually prosper under a retro Mercury, especially if Mercury is retrograde but otherwise well-aspected in their birth charts. It is also a time when matters begun under a previous retro period will come to fruition, or completion as the case may be. Firm decisions that have been previously made when Mercury is travelling normally through the zodiac may be implemented or finalised while Mercury is retrograde without too much worry, for experience shows that this can be done without undue problems arising.

Mercury Retrograde in Leo
When Mercury is retrograde, everyone's thinking is more introspective and we tend to think about issues and concerns which relate to the sign involved. With Mercury retrograde in Leo, people with this sign prominent in their charts will be especially prone to such introspection. There is little choice but to reconsider our personal views and opinions about life. There is, however, an opportunity to gain insight into our own ego.

Mercury retro in Leo gives confusion regarding high ideals and aspirations. People tend to be outspoken or quick-tempered, and their kind-hearted impulses can be misplaced, due to getting the facts wrong. Leaders and those in high places are subject to delusion and error, especially as nebulous Neptune is in opposition and lordly Jupiter is square. They tend to appear haughty, proud and passionate. Individuals find dramatic ways to communicate and are quick to refute ideas that disagree with their own.

All areas of communication are affected, especially in matters related to romance, self-expression, creative and dramatic endeavours or anything to do with children, investment, public standing and speculative ventures in general. This period brings travel snafus and missed appointments of all kinds. Documents can go astray.

I love the Weather Channel, too. I been around it so long, I remember when Jim Cantore had hair.  ;D

Bravo, Bravo Celeste for posting that brilliant and insightful info about Mercury retrograde...I feel sure that it has played a mighty hand in these events. As I mentioned in other threads concerning this.

As for me, I, too, have lots going on, trying to make my dreams come true in this here Big Apple, and those things can keep me away for days at a time sometimes. But I love everyone here, and this place is a part of me as much as Brokeback is a part of me. I don't expect to be leaving anytime soon, as long as there's so much love, fun, and laughter to be had here at BetterMost. So let's let the party go on, and hope that the recently departed will come to their senses and get back here. Even if we have to wait till November.  ;)

Thanks for the great thread, Isabelle. We could use a group hug.

Lots o' brokie love,

Jenny

I know for sure that I'm leaving ... but only for 3 weeks. I'm gonna be in Thailand on vacation and visiting family, starting August 3 and flying back the 24th. While I'm sure I'll have internet access, I don't know how much time I'll actually have to drop in and post. I'll try to post some pics of the beautiful places I'll get to visit.

until, I leave, I'll also be quite busy finishing up my projects. being your own boss has many perks but the downside, you don't have anyone to take up the slack when you need. I'll be really busy for the next few weeks leading up to my trip, so you may not see me as much here either. but I promise, once I'm back, I'll be back here in full form.

sfericsf--yeah, wasn't high school fun? (no)

CENSORED, , so if I'm goling, that's why

I've finished--not started, FINISHED--three stories since that one that got all of you (who read it) so upset, and disguarded them all..cause they're no good.

Some nice poetry (not haiku, poetry, and songs) from Donne to Brecht, so I guess I've done something. In three different languages (only one of which i speak...)

Gotta go see what Aguirre was yelling about into the phone...

The thread "What did you used to do?" on "I Love the Lighter Side" is still quite active - last post was July 10th - seems to deal with pretty much the same subject. Go have a look.

Just for you, Barb and Jeff -

 ::)

Eeek! I missed it!  :o

Maybe it depends on your taste in men, Celeste. I remember once, years ago, TWC did this public-service thing about weatherproofing your home for winter, and Jim was in the video wearing jeans and a very tight-fitting short-sleeved polo shirt. The pecs and biceps were to-die-for.  ;D

Here's Marshall Sees, for you TWC fanatics.  And he's from Chicago.  I believe this concludes our gallery of meteorolgists from The Weather Channel.

OK, Celeste, if we're done with the Weather Channel, I'll submit New York's own Sam Champion of ABC7.   ;)

Btw, that second picture of Mr. Cantori is much hotter more flattering.   ;D

Well, I for one am happy to see a little lightheartedness and whimsy make their way into this thread.  Who knew that there was such a common interest among many Brokies in the Weather Channel?  The Childress/ Riverton weather updates on BetterMost now seem all the more appropriate.

I'm here for the long haul, pardners. I love this movie and story so much, and feel so privileged to be a part of its historical moment, bearing fascinated witness to its continuing power to change hearts and lives. I am proud to be a member of this wonderful forum, and regret that some of us have felt the need to move on, though I remind myself of the importance to respect and honor other people's differing paths. I wish the best to all who have or will depart, and implore those who might stay to hang on and continue building this marvellous nascent community.

Sending out love to all friends, absent, present, and future...

Heck no, Friends, I'm not going anywhere.  I should have more time for posting and reading after this durn move is done, but other than that, all the travelin' I ever did was around the internet lookin' for this site.  Now that I found it, I'm here to stay.  My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who makes BetterMost the friendliest, liveliest, most thought-provoking, BEST place to be in the orbit of the planet we call Brokeback Mountain!

I know what its like Alec,I just moved house too.....only from one side of town to the other.....but it took me ages to get around to packing......my hubby was running around, organising boxes, removalist, concreting at new house, fencer at new house, electrician for new house....while i sat here, boxes still empty, cupboards still full....thinking "tomorrow, i'll get into it"......but i would get on here, and before i knew it half the day was gone, and i was still sitting here in my pyjamas....

Anyway, I did finally get around to it, and we did get moved, and we've been here now nearly two weeks, and today, i finally got the new place, looking just how i like it, feels like home.....

So dont despair, you'll be prepared for your move, you will just have to pack a lot faster, get a little less sleep, and you will get the job done.....good luck!!!

And your description of this site, is spot on.....I love it too....

Nicely put, Alec!  When the production of "BrokenArsed Mountain" is in the can, I think you should direct the sequel:  "BrokenArsed Planet."  I'm sure we can arrange for Jack, Ennis and the gang to be wafted to another world---they're half there already.  ;D

Good luck with all the moving hoo-ha.  It'll feel so good when it's over.  :-*

Hi there everyone.  If I was to answer this question a few weeks ago, the answer would have been that I was leaving.  Actually no, it wouldn't have be an answer at all because I wouldn't have the words to say so, or the courage.  You see, like many others around the world (seemingly) I fell into an emotional black hole a few weeks ago, and with complete sincerity I can say that I was convinced that I wouldn't make it back.  The plan was simple; I would just slip quietly into obscurity.

But before you jump to any conclusions, I say to you now that I'm not leaving.  I also want to reassure you that the problems that I have been facing have not been related to BetterMost, and especially not the very public "this place has changed so I'm leaving" announcements that certain members felt that the rest of us needed to hear.  Well to borrow a common English expression: "Bollocks"!  In fact I'm very annoyed that they would be so selfish.  I loved them more than they will (now) ever know, but they put their own self-important grand-standing above everyone else's feelings, labelled themselves victims of a cruel world, and then fell on their own swords.  I know they were hurting, but that's no reason to take the rest of us down with them.  To them and anyone who takes their lead I say: shame on you.

There is only one reason that I write all this tonight and that is to plead with you all, and through you, to everyone that you encounter on this site, if you think that it's time to leave, think about carefully (to be sure) but if you must go, then go in peace and don't let the door swing shut and hit you on the arse as you leave.  We have a responsibility, just by being here, to be above all that shit, and I for one don't care to see anyone using this community as a tool for their martyrdom.

All the best, Chris.

P.S. Please excuse my language and strong feelings on the issue.

No - no excuses needed, so no excuses to you, from me, for you, for anyone...  No excuses required here.  Well put I think.  I still think this is a place where we are tyring out our best selves, and sometimes we do better than others, but the intention is still there.

Hey, Chris, I'm glad you are here again, and I hope that you are escaping from your emotional black hole.

I came close to leaving, too, because I thought I was done with BBM. But I wasn't. So I'm back.
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

Weight Training

This is a giant block of whatever is most difficult for you to carry & trust me on this, you'll carry it more times than you can count until you decide that's exactly what you want to do most & then it won't weigh a thing anymore.

I am still here, hopefully for a very long time.

My husband asked me how come my BBM fever still has not died after 7 months.  The truth is BBM will always be part of me, but I don't need to discuss or analyze it everyday now.  What keeps me here is this group of wonderful, caring people that I get to know here.  Maybe I am never a die hard fan of BBM as some here, but I am a die hard fan of this group.  You guys keep me coming back everyday, regardless if I feel high or low that day.

For the friends that we thought left us, may be this place isn’t right for them at times for whatever reasons, but I know they didn’t stop caring.  I saw some candle lit for Chris by some old friends, some with no name on it, but behind every candle, there is a caring soul that never really left us. Give them some time to work out their issues, they may be back, may be not.  But the time we spent here, the joy they gave us, the heart they shared with us will never be lost.

Well said Chris.....my sentiments exactly, and glad you are back here.....i am an newie compared to a lot here, but I think this board is fabulous.

And if anyone needs any reminder of just what kind of people are here....go have a look at the thread which has been following the surgery and then the devasting illness that has befallen our moderator Chris....(now called...Chris is Awake)......

If anything shows the kind of people on this board, then reading thru that thread, certifies the feelings, emotions, caring and compassion of the people who are here, and I for one am very very proud, that I can call myself a member of such a society.

We all came here because of our love and emotions of a wonderful movie, and of course we still want to discuss Ennis and Jack, but it has gone way beyond that, way way beyond that, and we are now a "family", like sisters and brothers.

You know, I have often wondered what came first "the kind of people we are now" or the "movie".......and I have come to the conclusion that we were always "the kind of people we are now", we have all probably had that caring, compassionate nature in our life forever.......the movie, and this board, just gave us a way of expressing it to more people, gave us comfort in opening up our hearts and thoughts and gave us the opportunity to meet so many others who felt the same way as we do.

If you havent read the posts on the "Chris is AWAKE" thread, go now, and read them....it not only follows the apalling illness that Chris is enduring, but you will see, like I have, what a wonderful fellowship of people we have here.

If ever the aussie term, "fair dinkum mates", ever applied, it sure does here....

Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection

Thanks for this wonderful post, Jenny

And Katie, too. We are showing what we're made of with this week's events. Forget Texas, don't mess with Chez Tremblay!
