I don't think I'd take a stand until I saw how explicit the scene of simulated (or real) anal sex is.

I'd ask, too, if somebody (not you, Del) is trying to manufacture a controversy just to stir up publicity? I mean, how the heck would they rate it if it was really explicit simulated straight sex?  :-\

considering how Cohen behaved in his other movie, I am not too keen on seeing him 'expose' homophobia. not to be judging without seeing it, but basing my opinion on the 'subtlety' of his other work; it isn't gonna be pretty.

I am thinking of a gay couple I knew at another site, who were hesitant to show affection to one another at the airport. This crap is not helpful. it is MOCKING. it is mocking gay people (seriously who would act that way at an airport?)

I haven't been in many airports....do a lot of straights suck nipples when they greet each other?

But is this stuff NC-17 worthy?

I dont know, Del, Youtube does not allow nudity, sex, etc...so I have no idea what the entire film has in it.

After sitting through Mulholland Drive, Basic Instinct, Nine 1/2 Weeks etc., ad nauseum, and watching scenes such as a 40 foot tall Naomi Watts on the big screen masturbating, I daresay Cohen could hardly be much worse.  And none of those movies were NC-17.

From what I understand of the current "Hollywood Production Code," now known as the Motion Picture Association of America's film-rating system, the dildoes are enough to get the NC-17.

really? so you think there is no such thing anymore as a NC17 movie? there is nothing that would rate that kind of rating?

I don't think it is impossible that there is a movie with a gay theme that is a true NC17...just as there have been straight movies that get a NC17.

whether this one deserves it is something we can't tell until it is released.

To answer the original question posed in this thread, I say, "no." Its not because the character is gay, its because the film is explicit and crude.

Assuming that the rating is due to the character's homosexuality is the same thing as the "its 'cuz I'm black" argument.

No, I'm saying that those movies were not NC-17 but were extremely explicit, but they were about straight couples.  Cohen's movie would have to go beyond the explicitness of those movies to deserve an NC-17.  And I just doubt that he will.

Of course there are.

Movie screens are generally 40-70 feet tall.  I was merely saying that I didn't particularly care to see Naomi Watts masturbating but there she was - 40 feet tall on the screen doing just that.

At the current moment, the movie I love you, Phillip Morris is having a lot of trouble finding an American distributor.  The directors are busily cutting the gay sex scenes.  In the meantime, the movie already has distributors in European countries - uncut.

Do you think the directors are having problems because of the sex or because it's gay sex?

Ang's "Lust, Caution" had explicit straight sex, and was rated NC-17.

I think explicitness is more objective than crudneness.

Of course, it's because it's GAY sex! ( I know it was a rhetorical question  ;))  The MPAA is well known for its homophobia.  They consider "alternate sexuality"more obscene.  My favourite example:  They originally slapped an NC-17 rating on BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER which is basically a cute gay comedy for teens.

I'm sad to see that the director is caving in and making cuts.  I'll skip it when it opens in theatres and just wait for the "director's cut" dvd.

And some people claim that the MPAA is not a censor.

I guess you haven't watched the recent R-rated and dildo-filled ;D, ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO...
