Cowboy hats
« on: August 01, 2006, 08:17:38 pm »
I'm just learning how to create a poll and came up with this simple subject.  Just seeing how it suppose to work.

To answer the question, I own a black hat and a straw hat.

I voted "none." As a Midwesterner, it feels a bit too costume-y to wear around here. (In fact, come to think of it, I only wear any hat at all when it's below 15 degrees.)

Mine is white and kinda of a straw material - I'm not exactly sure what it's made out of.

I wear it out occassionally, when the mood strikes : )  It took awhile for me to grow into the idea.  I'm from the second biggest city Michigan, we don't wear cowboy hats there - but since I've moved to a much smaller city in the "agricultural" side of Washington - I see a lot more of them and I feel more secure in my cowboy hatness *lol*

I have two,  a buff colored Stetson with a braided black leather band I've had for years.  My Dad bought it for me one Christmas when I started taking my boys horseback riding on a regular basis...and living in California I have a straw one as well with a beautiful pheasant feather band that I wear to all the Little League Games much to my youngests dismay.. lol...  I've also got a pair of Justin boots, black, ropers.

You sound like a cowgirl to me.  Yeehaw!

Here in Las Vegas, I actually seen a lot of people wearing hats and boots.  I can never see myself wearing a cowboy hat.  I only wear my black hat, resembles Jack's but not that nice, twice when I go hiking.  I wear the straw hat often working in my backyard.

I live in a place where a fair number of people wear cowboy hats, but I don't own one. (I own an old straw hat that's a bit like a cowboy hat - use it for gardening and stuff - but I wouldn't call it a cowboy hat to somebody who was picky about it.) The cowboy hats symbolize a lot of things to the people who wear them, and I'm not a member of that particular subculture. And I wouldn't be comfortable pretending to be.
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

I've a Shady Brady type hat.  Straw.  Had it many years.  Worn it a lot more this year due to the fad that came in this year with straw cowboy hats. I'm a hat person, so I look good in it.  ;D

I actually own two straw ones.  One is more like an English riding hat - it's sort of pine-colored brown with a black band that ties into a bow in the back.  Very prim and proper, and it fits me perfectly.  I wore it all the time on my first trip to England - it was so blustery every day that it was the perfect thing to keep my hair from constantly blowing into my eyes (I *hate* that).  The other one is more of a cream-colored straw one with a brown, twisted band.  My Ennis hat.  It doesn't fit me quite as well as the other one, so I don't wear it as much as I'd like.  But I like the way it looks on one of my dressers.  I should really put up a coat hanging peg and hang it from there.

No more beans!

Mine is hanging on the corner of a door as my cats like the feather hat band too much.  Also hanging on a door corner is my colonial tricorn, a blue silk covered Vietnamese bamboo hat, most of the rest are stacked in 3 hat boxes sitting decoratively on the floor, all my wool berets and baseball caps are in a bag in the closet, and I'm looking for a hat box for my recently acquired dressage hat.  ;D  So I'm curious as to what an English riding hat looks like.

Did you see the bonus feature on the Making of the movie, with Heath and Jake wearing those shower caps over their cowboy hats all the time? LOL!

Another thing, my straw version got beat up on the roller coaster ride yesterday. D'you know how I can, uh, fluff it? I was thinkin of submerging it in a horse trough, then leaving it to dry in the sun.  8)

Heh, you said it first injest.  They're hat covers, not shower caps.  Rain/wet does ruin/warp/melt the felt of the hats.  Last time I had a felt hat was when I was in high school marching band.  We performed, rain or shine and being Texas, our uniforms had a cowboy hat as an accessory.  We weren't about to pay that much for a felt hat, then let the rain ruin it.  So, plastic covers for hats!

My husband has 'dress' hats in black, sand, grey felt and one straw; three 'everyday' hats in felt and straw; and four working hats.

Son has 'dress' hats in black and sand, one straw; and two 'everyday' hats in straw

I have 'dress' hats in forest green, red, black, sand, grey; three 'everyday' hats....

Am I the only one here that does horse shows? You gotta have different hats for your different outfits!!

these are the traditional 'cowboy' styles...we have 5,345 baseball caps (just kidding, but we got a lot!!)

also, a brief comment on 'dress' 'everyday' and work...you buy them new and when they get too worn for the show ring they get moved to 'everyday' status....when they get too stained to wear into town then they get demoted to work hats!

Rarely throw away a hat...

Wow! You sure have hats!

I have two cowboy hats, a black wool felt bought from Sheplers, and a straw from a local sporting goods stores. A friend who used to travel to Houston frequently on business told me I should wear the straw between Memorial Day and Labor Day--sort of like women and white shoes, I guess.  ;D I've been telling myself I want to replace the black wool with a geniune Resistol (like Jack's in the story) but somehow I haven't gotten around to it.

Also two pairs of cowboy boots, a nice understated pair of in black Justin's with with black decorative stitching, and a pair of brown Frey's.

I love the Justin's. As I said, understated (black on black), I bought them from Shepler's, feeling I was taking a huge chance ordering footwear mail-order, but out of the box, they fit me like they were made for me. The Frey's were a real "find." I got them at a sidewalk sale for five bucks. I could tell from the condition for the soles that they hadn't been worn much--and they still had a store price tag on them of $125.

Del, you ride dressage? I'm impressed. That takes a lot of skill!

Not at this time.  But for you, I'll see what I can do...

This is the closest thing I can find to it.  It's almost kind of a straw fedora, and mine is about this color, a little shallower in the top part, and with a wide black gauze band that ties into a floppy bow in the back.

I have some photos of me wearing it in Wales, actually.  Next time I have to go to Kinko's, I'll scan one onto a disk there (alas, we have no scanner here or at home) and post it if you're interested.

Funny, for a native Texan, I've never been particularly drawn to cowboy hats before, but in the wake of Brokeback Mountain, I can't get enough of them. I'm a cityboy myself, though, and have never owned a cowboy hat of my own, apart from a possible junior-sized one as a little boy (and the memory of that is so vague that I can't even vouch for its former existence). I feel too self-conscious to sport a cowboy hat on my own noggin, but love to see them on other men.

Were you at Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington? That's a cool place for cowboy hats, too! (BTW, I was born in Grand Prairie, part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area).

If I do, it would probably be a black cowboy hat, to match my black leather jacket.

Black is an excellent color...spend as much as you can reasonably afford...a good hat will last decades if you treat it right. Buy from a real western store, they will block it for free...never pick it up by the brim...only the crown and keep it in the box it came in...

ok! I will stop with the hat care tips!! (Can you tell I like cowboy hats?)

I sold my colored hats this year...I am 41...I am gonna just admit here that my rodeo queen days are over...*sigh*

ok I kept the dk green...LOL!!

Jess, I am three years older than you. If your rodeo queen days are over, this Hoosier queen ain't even gonna try!

There is an excellent western store here in Indiana. It is located on the southside of Terre Haute. It is called Boot City, and people come from all over the Midwest and the South to shop at it. It is huge. They sell everything western... hats, jackets, chaps, saddles... just about everything, including some fabulous cowboy/western boots. If I do get a hat, I will probably buy it there.  :)

Just get a nice neutral color and have it blocked by the store's expert to suit your face...you CAN'T go wrong. It will go with jeans or suits...you DO have a nice pair of boots??
Nope...don't even have boots! :-\ What kind of self-respecting Texan am I?! I might take up your suggestion, Jess; I have a friend here who tells me he would love to see me duded up in cowboy gear! ;)

i voted 'none' But then i realised that i bought a hat in mexico years ago. it's called a jipi-japa and its a kind of panama hat made of palm fiber.

but that's not a real cowboy hat. I discovered that there's a cowboy store in Brussels and it's apparently the real thing. there are only of few of those in europe and the owners travel to the states each year to stock up on all things cowboy. I'll have to shopping there!
Jude, who organised the euro brokie meeting in London this month, bought a really nice belt there, with a buckle that said 'i 'd rather go fishing'   ::)  ::) very appropriate!

she posted a picture of it in the euro brokie thread on chez tremblay

A few years ago a friend and i took a train from here(N.Y) to Scottsdale Arizona. It was a three day train ride but it was great. The reason we took the train was to really see the country.
Well anyways..we went to a big country and western line dancing bar in Tuson. They were selling cowboy hats and everyone in the bar had one. so. I bought the greatest loooking black hat I have ever seen. I bought my friend a beautiful red one. They were both very expensive but I thought hey we are in Tuson! lets be cowgirls.

Well to make a long story short, when we finally arrived back home, we were wearing our hats. The platform we got off on was really windy and my hat flew off and went down a cliff. That was the end of my cowboy hat!  :o :'(  Would like to get another black one someday though.

I have a friend whose lover died a few months ago, and left behind some cowboy hats. My friend says he'd like me to try them on sometime and take one that I might like, but I think I would feel kind of weird about that. The lover's boots are all gone, donated or given away; my friend seems to regret that now.

Woo, hoo! For the chance to play Thelma to yr Louise, I'd buy a hat and a band too! Tho not eagle feather, maybe a nice wild turkey feather one? We have wild turkeys near our house and they actually have beautiful iridescent feathers!! Just the wild ones tho.

Or a braided leather band and strap combination... (I'm obsessing on the band, so my imagination won't overheat on the Thelma & Louise imagery)  ::)

Here's a pic of me wearing my straw cowboy hat!

It got kinda flattened when that roller coaster threw me, but it still works!!

A roller coaster threw you? And you're not too busted up? Lee, you deserve a belt-buckle medal for that!

Why I bet he don't even have his contractors liscence!!

Well, we can't start building his temple without a contractor. And if he doesn't have any plans for coffee or construction and he doesn't even have his license, why on earth is he coming right over?

I just got a new hat for winter, in addition to my straw for summer. My husband gave me his father's hat. It's a lovely gray felt, made by the Beaver Company. (My husband already has a black cowboy hat, and he has a bigger head than his father did, so that's how I got it.)

I was shopping in Chamonix-Mt. Blanc a few weeks ago and there was a shop there with very expensive cowboy hats (all the American brands), and there I nearly bought my third cowboy hat, besides the green one and the white felt one I already have... I decided against it... I regret it now, of course...

Anyway, use to have a George Strait white hat-very nice hat until I stepped on the damn thing! Now I've decided not to wear it anymore.

Does anyone know what the kind of hat that Ennis wears thruout the movie is called? It has a very small brim. I would like to get one like that. Those cowboy hats with wide brims look kind of silly on my small head. Plus they get in the way when you move in for a kiss!

Here's a picture of it:

I've always thought I look stupid in hats.
Me, too--I've always thought I look dorky in hats, and have very rarely owned any in my forty years of life. I did purchase one last year, kind of like a fishing hat (not unlike the hat we see Ennis wearing in the latter part of the film), that I wear on some of my drives to Kerrville. I'm thinking of buying a baseball cap for the upcoming trip to Estes Park, but may go ahead and wear my fishing hat instead.

I just can't picture myself in a cowboy hat, though. I would feel thoroughly out of my element duded up like that (but don't mind seeing them on others!).

I got a new cowboy hat since my old one bit the dust--not just flattened but just about broke in two!! What do you think?

Also in this picture are the coffeepot and bucket that EDelMar and I lost in the great housekeeping raid after the BBQ. We have offered a reward for their return.

Hey, Lee/Front and Lee/Richard.

I bought a new hat at the gay rodeo this past weekend.  They had a much better selection than what I can find out east.  Here's Lee and I (with my new hat).  It's rather dark.  I "borrowed" this picture from Monica's posting over at DC:

Thanks for posting this, Paul. Now I don't need to post a picture of my new cowboy hat given to me by my family for my birthday!! It's a "crushable" Stetson and I highly recommend it, especially for travelling. One other feature it has that works well for San Francisco is the strap, which is the only reason I still have my hat after braving the Windy City! Tho I did get some funny looks when I said I was gonna "strap on" my hat!!

The photo doesn't show off your hat to its best advantage!! Mind if I play around with the mid-tones a little bit??

Go for it, Lee.  The sun was strong and directly overhead at the time.  Like I said, I just "gacked" this pic from Monica.   Thanks, Monica!

How come I didn't come back to this topic after the BBQ? Good thing someone brought it up again. I just changed my vote from none to Straw Cowboy Hat   :D.

I bought it together with our very own ineedcrayons in Estes Park during the Brobeback BBQ  :D And I wore it all summer everytime I went to the public pool and at every sunbath in my garden  8)

Here I am with my first cowboy hat ever:

And here are my two other cowboyhats  :). I bought them from Jenny and wear them always. Well, except for the last three weeks. I had brought them to the jeweler to fix new eyes (loops?) at them - and it took three full weeks and three visits at the jewellery to get it right  ::).

I don't have a cowboy hat, and never will, because I'm not a hat person; it be like a thimble on my huge beach-ball head. But I must say you all -- Lee, Lee, Paul, Chrissi -- look very cute in yours.

I just now had to change my vote, from no hat to black hat, which I purchased on Saturday, September 22nd of this year, while attending the gay and lesbian rodeo in Austin. Haven't worn it, mind you, since Sunday, September 23rd, but at least I have one now (and hopefully will enjoy more occasions to display it).

For pics (courtesy of Eric and one gentle lady present at the rodeo), please see my blog.

Texas in general, sure, but Austin ain't really a cowboy-hat town, as Eric noted on his recent visit here. Austin's kind of an anomaly for the state as whole (and on the whole, that's a good thing); no one would look askew seeing you sport a cowboy hat on the street, certainly, but you wouldn't necessarily see a lot of others doing so (unless you were at the Rainbow Cattle Company on Saturday night!  ;)).
Now that sounds like a fun place!!  ;D

Thank you kindly! I do wear my San Antonio Spurs baseball cap pretty much everytime I go out in daytime...Eric saw me in this while in town. In fact, this was what I wore to the rodeo, only to be replaced by the black cowboy hat.

Now baseball caps...those you see plenty of around here, with everyone from frat boys to truck drivers sporting them.
