BetterMost Halloween Party 2009
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:51:18 am »
Hey all you witches, skeletons, pumpkin-monsters,
Frankensteins and other freaks! ;D ;)

Time for a spooky Halloween Party!

Drink, anyone?

On this thread, we offer gross drinks and spooky snacks. Everyone is invited, and you can contribute to the party. Bring more drinks, tell us a joke, bring a cute or spooky Halloween gif for your fellow creatures of the night. Or, if you're not so handy with pictures, tell us about your favorite Halloween as a kid, your collegue in the office who managed to scare you, whatever stories you want to share! Or simply stick around and chat with us. Drop us a line if you can, say if your there :D. We also love costumes :). If you don't go in costume, you can show us a nice one you found while googling. Everything is welcome!

Eyeball Bowle

Extra service for BetterMostians: recipe for the eyeball bowle!

You can give to your kids, it's alcohol-fee

1 liter cherry juice
1 can of lychees
0,75 liter mineral water

Let the lychees soak in the pure cherry juice first, so they get nicely soaked in red. Then add the mineral water (sparkling) directly before serving.

That must be like our English word "goodies."  A goody bag is a small bag of treats, usually candy, and maybe a tiny toy, that children get as they are leaving a party they have attended.

Oh, wait, they sometimes have grown up goody bags too.  I've heard that goody bags for celebrities at parties can contain some extremely expensive stuff, all designed to get the celebrity to attend the party.

BTW, it's already evening in my time zone. While I'm partying here with you, having drinks and food and goodies, my kids are out there trick or treating. Other kids too, of course. Every few minutes the door bell rings and hubby gives out some candy (since I'm busy here with you).

It's funny how internet and RL are coordinated simultaneously :).

I wish it was time for the kids to be trick or treating here in Indiana. We still have to wait for a few more hours! They normally start coming sometime around 7 pm. :D

Me too Amanda! I always enjoy learning about the customs in other countries. I think it is fascinating. I started a "Christmas Customs" thread several years ago asking our members to tell us how they celebrate Christmas where they live. I always looked forward to reading it as the new posts came in. That thread was quite active for awhile. Maybe we can get it going again this Christmas.

I think it is safe for me to assume there won't be any hands on the menu at your house tonight!

I did, thanks. And you're right, no fingers or hands on the menu. In fact, nothing halloween-y at all.
Halloween came up here only a few years ago. I have a sweet anecdote from today:

My youngest child (six years) asked me what my favorite thing was about Halloween when I was a kid. I felt quite old when I replied: "When I was a child, we didn't have Halloween." You should have seen his face! "What - no Halloween? Why? How? Go tell, mom."

Yep, it's true. When I was a child, Halloween was completely unknown in Germany. Later I learned about it and its origins in school, in English class. They call it Landeskunde (applied geography) and it belongs to learning foreign languages. You also learn about the history, customs, traditions, political system and ways of life in the country/countries you learn the language of.

Anyway, Halloween stayed unnoticed in Germany until maybe ten or twelve years ago. Then the shops suddenly had Halloween decorations, pumpkins became fancy, and so on. That was around the time when the children also started to go trick or treating.

I refused to go trick or treating with my children. It seemed (still seems) like begging to me. Anyway, my sister-in-law always went trick or treating with her kids, and she took mine along. We always use the costumes from carnival, and I paint the children's faces.
Two years ago was the only time I went trick or treating (with my youngest). And I disliked every moment of it. I felt embarrased, begging for sweets. But my SIL's kids were old enough to go alone, as were my girls, but the little one was too young to go without an adult.
Now I'm out of the trick or treating quandary. All my children are old enough to go alone (and look after their little brother) :).

Halloween still is an almost exclusive children's thing here. No Halloween decorations, let alone parties, in offices, no costumes for adults. But it changes. There are Halloween parties organised in danceclubs or such, and the twens are the target audience.

And I? I love celebrating Halloween on BetterMost! :D

And we love celebrating it with you! :-*

Thanks for telling us about your Halloween experiences and about Halloween in Germany. I was pleasantly surprised when you said your kids were out trick or treating. I was under the impression they didn't celebrate Halloween over there.

I love Halloween! It is my favorite holiday, save Christmas. The kids get candy. The adults get to party and act all goofy for one night (and get away with it!). Lots of scary movies on TV. It's a win win situation for everyone! lol

I suppose trick or treating is a form of begging. In fact, here in Indiana some people refer to it as "begger's night" rather than Halloween. But! I think most adults would go out and BEG those kids to come to their houses, if for some reason the kids didn't show up. I think the adults enjoy the trick or treaters and seeing all the various costumes the kids are wearing, and in many cases probably have more fun than the kids!

Same thing with Christmas. Christmas in many ways is a children's holiday, but the adults get to create all the magic. And that is a lot of fun too! :D

You're welcome. Actually, godis isn't any particular kind of candy, it's just all types of candy.

Halloween traditions in Sweden?

Well, I don't think you can call it "traditions" exactly, as it was unheard of only a few years ago.
Since then, it's been imported directly from the US, mostly for commercial reasons is my guess.

Now, you see skeletons and pumpkins around in the shops, and I think the kids also go trick or treating. At least some places, or some families.
I don't follow it with any particular interest, since my son is way above that age.

The Swedish tradition, however, for this weekend is "All saint's day".
I'm not very familiar with that either, since I'm not Christian, but as far as I know  people decorate the graves
of their loved ones with wreaths and light candles on them.

That's a nice tradition, I think.

That sounds like a very nice custom. And very beautiful too. :D

All Saints Day goes pretty much unnoticed here in the U.S. It is considered a Holy Day in the Catholic faith though, and I remember going to Mass on All Saints Day. Many Americans will decorate the graves of their loved ones on Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May. Flowers and flags are often placed next to the graves.

Chrissi, I forgot to mention something else about the trick or treaters. If someone does not wish to have the trick or treaters come to their door, they will turn off their porch light. The kids are taught to only go to the homes with the porch lights turned on.

Same here in Germany. Religious or not, going to the graves of loved ones is almost a must on All Saint's Day. It's the only day in the year I go to my father's grave, since it is far away and I'm not into visiting graves.
All Saint's Day is the first of November BTW.

LOL!!  Vivien will occasionally do that!  It's so cute, but I know it means she's freaked out about something... so eventhough it's a classic black cat pose, it usually means she needs some cuddling and calming-down.  She's very, very easily startled, sometimes by the smallest things.

I've posted these already elsewhere on BetterMost, but I'm still enamoured of my newest cute pictures of Viv... so here they are again (and they seem appropriate here anyway).

My neighbor's big black cat lay down beside me or intertwined himself between my ankles while I was handing out candy last nite. He would lie there and let the little kids rub him. A good helper for Halloween. I guess his folks were gone.

My cat stayed in the house and knocked my electric jack-o-lantern out of the window. And I think she knows it's Halloween time. She's wild as a buck. She has tormented me and the dogs all night. She zooms around and comes flying onto the bed sideways. I have no idea how she gets into such positions. It is like she launches herself from somewhere unknown. Then she grabs at anything that moves and then runs off. I'd strangle her, but I love her too much!  ;D Lots of stuff is on the floor this morning -- that wasn't there last nite.

Maybe that's just me, but all the cats I've known of this color truly have been a handful. Very high in temperament. What you report from last night simply fits with my experiences.
Nonetheless she's a cutie. How old is she?

Roxy is so cute! She's full of vigor and life! All kittens are bundles of energy Shasta. She'll calm down some in a few months. She's still a baby at this point in time. But she may always be a bit on the active side, based on what Chrissi just told us. But probably not enough to be destructive, just enough to be comical and cute. :-*

I've seen cats like Roxy before. I'm trying to remember the name of those markings on her fur. Is it called "tortoise shell" or something like that? I can't remember for certain.

I love your pictures of Vivien, Amanda. I love the way she looks silhouetted by the light of the fire. And I have a feeling she is a VERY happy cat! I think you probably nurture her and give her a lot of love and cuddles. :D

I also love what you did with your fireplace. The candles in there look beautiful. I've been thinking about doing that with my fireplace, but I'm never there enough to actually do it. It seems I'm always at Dad's house these days. One of these days I'll get over there and do it!

I'm in Speedway now but I'll be heading back over to Dad's soon. Maybe next time! :D

I missed the Halloween party last night. I'm glad I looked at this thread after dinner! Great pictures.  ;D

Halloween isn't much of a do over here. It's a kids things, if anything. No grown ups here dressing up like darth vader, or, like Michelle Obama, as cat woman.
But the shops are full of halloween stuff (makes you wonder who buys it all), our bakery sells chocolate wiches and other greepy creatures and sometimes there are Halloween kid's parties in school.
It's a bit like Valentine's or Santa Claus at Christmas, it still has an 'imported' feel to it, it hasn't become a tradition over here (yet).

But things may change, because last night at around 9 pm the doorbell rang. My husband and I looked at each other thinking 'Who could that be at this hour?' And when my husband opened the door, two kids were standing there in full Halloween dress, looking verrrry scary. So, trick-or-treating has now reached Belgium too. LOL. Of course, they couldn't say 'trick or treat', they needed a local version of that. They chose 'Candy or death!'  Hmmm, I'm not sure that will catch on though.
Of course we were totally unprepared, no candy available. :o I had to send them on their way with a bar of chocolate and some cookies. I must do better next year.

Anyway, no scary food pic from me. But we do have a black cat, Ollie, who was willing to pose for us.

The children here say  "Süsses oder Saures" = "Sweets or sour".

"jemandem Saures geben" is literally = to give someone something sour, meaning let someone have it.

Oh, Ollie is extremely cuddly. His favorite thing is to go wake up the kids in the morning. By the time we get downstairs in the morning he's waiting at the door. He then rushes up the stairs and goes into the kids room, jumps on the bed and starts purring very loudly in their ears, demanding to be cuddled, now!
I'm not a big fan of the cat going upstairs and jumping on the bed, but my kids love this so much, I can't say no.

His other favorite thing is to crawl in the kids'arms when they're watching tv. Owww, such a sweetie.

"Gemütlich" is one of those words where a translation must stay unsatisfactory because it's a unique expression. Cozy comes closest to it. Look what my dictionaly offers for gemütlich:

 canny  adj. (Scot.)   gemütlich
 comfortable  adj.   gemütlich
 comfy  adj.   gemütlich
 cozilyAE, cosilyBE  adv.   gemütlich
 cozyAE, cosyBE  adj.   gemütlich
 homelike  adj.   gemütlich
 homely  adj. (Brit.)   gemütlich
 homey   also: homy  adj.   gemütlich
 jovial  adj.   gemütlich
 jovially  adv.   gemütlich
 placid  adj.   gemütlich
 snug  adj.   gemütlich
 snugly  adv.   gemütlich
 unhurried  adj.   gemütlich

Gemütlich is all that and more. I've also heard the English expression "German Gemütlichkeit", for example in leaflets descibing a hotel or restaurant.

Ha, I was right :D;  look what wikipedia says:

Gemütlichkeit (German pronunciation: [ɡəˈmyːtlɪçkaɪt]  ( listen)) is a German abstract noun that has been adopted into English.[1] Its closest equivalent is the word "coziness"; however, rather than merely describing a place that is compact, well-heated and nicely furnished (a cozy room, a cozy flat), Gemütlichkeit connotes the notion of belonging, social acceptance, cheerfulness, the absence of anything hectic and the opportunity to spend quality time.

In Swedish, Danish and most of all Flemish there are many words who look like German words written in a funny way (to me ;)). If you hear people talking, you can't understand a word, but you understand much of a written text.

True. Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, German and Dutch are pretty closely related.

I'm able to understand quite a lot of written Dutch, not so much when I hear it spoken.

Yeah same here. And that´s usually the case with most languages. Easier to read than to heat it spoken.

Btw - how I identify that someone is speaking Dutch is what when a language sounds like German, but I don´t understand anything. That´s how I know it must be Dutch :D

He he. To me Dutch sounds like a mixture between German and English. I can understand a good deal fo Dutch, even when it's spoken. As long as it's spoken clearly. On the telly for example. News in Dutch are ok to understand, at least I get the gist of it. But people in everyday life is different of course.
