The "I LOVE everything Brokeback" thread

Oh that's right! I forgot that I used to sleep, too. And not only that, but my dreams weren't haunted by scenes from Brokeback, and when I woke up in the morning my very first conscious thought upon opening my eyes was NOT, "Wonder if Barb watched the movie and found out about the color of Ennis' shirt?"

I am scaring myself.

I love the haunting bbm score.  I walk around all the time with that beautiful, quiet guitar in my head... and it's a wonderful thing!

Hey, you, get outta my head!    I was just thinking about something specific about the score I wanted to post, then I came here and read this.

I love that at the very beginning of the movie, when Ennis is getting out of the truck and approaching the trailer, there is that plaintive two note call, followed by a faint two note return.  It is Ennis calling out to Jack, who is also approaching but from a distance, and who is calling back.  It is the story of their lives, summed up so gorgeously in two notes mirroring each other.

I've always been haunted by those two notes as well - never could put a reason for it - appreciate your putting words to my feelings. Used to be Beethoven's 4 notes from the 5th symphony that was the shortest musical statement to create intense feelings, but no more.

I love the first 10 minutes of the movie where virtually nothing is spoken, yet so much is said - (all the way to the end of the bar scene) - especially about my Ennis.

I love that all of the artists behind this movie gave us credit for being intelligent and sensitive enough to draw our own conclusions - that they didn't beat us over the head with what we should think and they didn't spoon feed us what we should feel.  Real art truly does imitate life - it's something else that tries to tell us how life is supposed to be.

Oh sure, I always hear those two notes as echos... meant to foreshadow the Jack/ Ennis relationship.  It's interesting that Ennis enters the picture in a literal way (we see him coming) but Jack enters the situation symbolically before we see him.  The echo in ths score, the wind that's really prominent before he arrives, and the little symbol of the rodeo cowboy on the semi-truck's license plate.  I love that license plate by the way.  It's how he leaves the film too... he dies but his symbols persist for several important scenes after he's no longer around as a person.
 

So, to stay on topic... I love BBM for the millions of amazing symbols that enrich this movie.  It seems so spare and simple at first, but clearly the more we think about it the more multiple meanings can be found in almost every image and/ or sound.

Yes, this is both in the story, but also in the movie. I love how the movie manages to be true to the story on this. Proulx' use of language is also sparse but poetical nevertheless.
Same in the movie: Lee doesn't beat us over the head with ususal romantic scenes (like a couple walking hand in hand into the sunset or stereotypes like that). But how much better is it when Ennis orders soup, or Jack raises an eyebrow when asking Ennis for next summer. And this is only the beginning of the jouney into the deeper layers of BBM.

I love that something so accessible as a MOVIE has bought so much joy into my existence.  Didn't have to take vows of celibacy, give away half my 'fortune' or have my thetans sorted.  All I had to do was find 2.5 spare hours and $15.

Three months later, it keeps paying and paying and paying.  The best investment I'll ever make.
