Love and Other Drugs Trailer:
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway
Try to Redeem the Romantic Comedy

So despite the early murmurs that it might be a contender, the trailer for Love and Other Drugs  makes perfectly clear that it is not any kind of Oscar movie — but it still looks pretty good! Today’s second trailer for a romantic comedy that seems like it might actually be intended for adults stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a smooth Viagra drug rep who meets his match in the straight-talking Anne Hathaway, the kind of woman willing to show up at a guy's apartment naked (and who, though the trailer doesn’t belabor it, has some health problems). The two talk, banter, laugh, and kiss in a way that suggests they might actually like each other — crazy stuff! — before heading into slightly more serious territory. There may be people so burned by the atrocities of past rom-coms that they no longer feel anything when Jake Gyllenhaal chases down and boards a Greyhound bus to win back his one true love, but, well, those people have cold, cold hearts and, needless to say, are not us.

November? - Not to smash all your hopes, but here are the release dates from IMDB:

Country Date
USA 24 November 2010
Finland 31 December 2010
Germany 6 January 2011
Russia 6 January 2011

The usual game. All Brokies talk about this great (or not so great) new movie. All Brokies? Noooo, there's a small, but significant enclave named Europe where poor Brokies must wait till next year, *sigh*

(With apologies to Goscinny et Uderzo) ;)

That must be frustrating. Though if it's any help, remember that "next year" is only 42 days later, in this case.

Can anyone remember/realize/COMPREHEND that the first BBM NY/SF/LA release date was November 9 2005--which means that the new release will have been just over FIVE FUCKIN' YEARS--??

I can't even.

As the US cartoon strip character, 'Cathy,' would say: "ACK!!"

Why is Jake Gyllenhaal
Covering His Mouth in the
Love and Other Drugs Poster?

9/8/10 at 11:00 AM

Love and Other Drugs is the Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway movie that has been marketed — depending on which trailer you saw — as both a sex-forward romantic comedy and a serious-illness weepie. At right is the poster for the film, which seems to position the movie as the former (naked movie stars smiling in bed = sex-forward romantic comedy) — or does it? Ask yourself, why is Jake Gyllenhaal covering his mouth with his hand?

Yes, this is nitpicky, but, also, strange! Really look at that—it gets weirder the longer you stare. What is going on? Is Jake trying not to laugh? His eyes aren't smiling. Is he surprised? He doesn't look it, and besides, what's he surprised about? That a photographer showed up in his bedroom? Is he making the universal sign for "speak no evil"? Again, why? The poster doesn’t convey enough information about his character, or his relationship, for us to think he has a problem running his mouth.

Meanwhile, why is Hathaway so contentedly oblivious to whatever inner turmoil is going on with Jake and his mouth? He's not the one with a serious illness! She is! Is her illness the subtext of Jake's gesture? Like, don't ask Jake Gyllenhaal if this is a movie about Parkinson's disease or sex, because he won't tell you? He can keep a secret! This movie can keep a secret! The secret being, maybe it's not just a sex-forward romantic comedy?

Woah. Clearly, we have now spent more than a reasonable amount of time pondering the meaning of this poster, and are not sure we have arrived at a satisfactory explanation. Can you help?

Sure, I'll be glad to help. Jake plays a Viagra salesman. There's a pillow covering his "junk" as he likes to call it. So, obviously, either he has an embarrassing erection or has an equally embarrassing lack of erection. I would guess the latter, and he's unable to fulfill Anne's last wish before she kicks the bucket. Too bad we'll have to wait till November to find out!!

As someone who does manips herself, I can say with 99% certinty that the second pic is fake too. Jake´s head is from another picture and you can tell that the head and body do not fit. (a very common error is to make the head too big) But hey, don´t let that stop you from enjoying it!

This discussion about pics of Jake prompted me to google him and look at some of the oldies. It´s not hard to find drool-worthy pics of Jake. But there are also a few weird pics of him out there. Like the pic below for example. Personally I think he looks more like David Schwimmer than himself

from AP today, interesting to know she cried almost every day on set of LAOD:

Hathaway says ex's arrest taught her to be wary

NEW YORK – Anne Hathaway is now at a point where she can joke about her former boyfriend admitting he was a con artist.

The 27-year-old actress opens up about the ordeal in the November issue of Vogue magazine.

Asked to name her "deal-breakers" with men, Hathaway replied, "Uh ... fraud?" and laughs.

Raffaello Follieri pleaded guilty to cheating investors out of millions of dollars by falsely claiming he had Vatican connections that enabled him to buy church property at a discount. He was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison in 2008.

Jewelry that Follieri gave Hathaway was recently auctioned off by U.S. marshals.

All joking aside, the actress admits the relationship took its toll.

The experience taught her to be "more wary," she said. "It takes a minute for me to let my guard down, but once I do and I get to know someone, I'm very open, very trusting. Some might say too trusting."

Shooting the movie "Love and Other Drugs" opposite Jake Gyllenhaal helped Hathaway move forward, she said. Trust is a theme of the film, and it forced Hathaway to confront the issue.

"I was a wreck from start to finish," Hathaway told Vogue. "I think I cried every single day."

The Oscar-nominated actress is dating actor Adam Shulman.

"Love and Other Drugs" opens Nov. 24.
Dawn is coming,

Film
Love & Other Drugs
By JUSTIN CHANG
Posted: Tue., Oct. 26, 2010, 9:48am

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal star in
Fox's romantic drama 'Love & Other Drugs.'

A 20th Century Fox release of a Fox 2000 Pictures and Regency Enterprises presentation of a New Regency/Stuber Pictures/Bedford Falls production in association with Dune Entertainment.

Produced by Scott Stuber, Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz, Charles Randolph, Pieter Jan Brugge. Executive producers, Arnon Milchan, Margaret Riley.

Directed by Edward Zwick. Screenplay, Charles Randolph, Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz, based on the book "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman" by Jamie Reidy.

Jamie Randall - Jake Gyllenhaal
Maggie Murdock - Anne Hathaway
Bruce Winston - Oliver Platt
Dr. Stan Knight - Hank Azaria
Josh Randall - Josh Gad
Trey Hannigan - Gabriel Macht

A super-slick romantic comedy about a charismatic go-getter who pursues his calling and his soul mate in the unlikely world of pharmaceutical sales, "Love & Other Drugs" is snappy, saucy and, like any overzealous product-pusher, rather too eager to please. Notable for its barbed portrait of how doctors and drug companies do business, as well as an uncommon degree of sexual candor for a mainstream picture, this smartly packaged item otherwise hews closely to genre prescriptions. That bodes well for B.O. prospects, and ingratiating performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway should help sell the Fox release to the general public.

Loosely adapted from Jamie Reidy's humorous memoir, "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman," "Love & Other Drugs" qualifies as a change of pace for the usually more epic-minded Edward Zwick ("Defiance," "The Last Samurai"). Still, the film has some interesting points of contact with the director's "Blood Diamond," which similarly took aim at a corrupt global industry, represented by an ambitious young stud with a wobbly moral compass. Here, that would be Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal), a good-looking, fast-talking young man who's a chronic underachiever everywhere except between the sheets -- at least, until he lands a sales position at pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.

It's 1996, and the screenplay (by Zwick, Charles Randolph and Marshall Herskovitz, all credited as producers) amusingly sketches the mass commercialization of the drug industry, as Jamie and hundreds of other aspiring reps are trained to pitch products like Zoloft to doctors, some of whom require more persuasion than others. With his eye on a coveted Pfizer post in Chicago, Jamie is not above seducing a clinic receptionist (Judy Greer), sabotaging a Prozac-peddling rival (Gabriel Macht) or resorting to other unscrupulous means, often encouraged by his battle-hardened mentor (a fine Oliver Platt).

One of these tactics brings Jamie into unexpected contact with Maggie Murdock (Hathaway), who, at 26, has already been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. After an unusually punchy meet-cute -- he peeks at her bare breast during a medical exam, she wallops him with her messenger bag -- Jamie soon becomes smitten with the wry, rough-edged Maggie, who readily agrees to sleep with him but insists on maintaining an emotional distance. And so, the love of a good but sick woman helps Jamie regain his lost soul, while his steadfast devotion throws Maggie off-guard and forces her to confront her own commitment issues.

If one can get past the calculation inherent in the drug-pushing-boy-meets-disease-stricken-girl setup, "Love & Other Drugs" clicks largely because its actors do (no small feat, considering what an unhappy couple Gyllenhaal and Hathaway made in "Brokeback Mountain"). Their ribald pillow talk lends the film a verbal tartness that's complemented visually by the abundant nudity, though tasteful use of shadows and strategic camera placement still leave plenty to the imagination.

Jamie's tempestuous relationship with Maggie coincides with his, er, rising fortunes when he's tapped to sell Viagra, just as demand for the performance-enhancing drug is beginning to sweep the nation, and Zwick's unflattering snapshot of the venality of the medical establishment is fascinating, if fanciful (one hopes). But it also raises expectations of seriousness, or at least deeper satirical intent, that fizzle out as the film earnestly toes the romantic-comedy line.

There seems to be no significant development, whether it's Jamie's training at Pfizer or his tireless quest for a cure for Parkinson's, that can't be reduced to a zippy montage, and the final scenes are awash in much teary emoting and the unsubtle strains of James Newton Howard's score. In this context, even the character of Jamie's less attractive but more successful brother (an amusing Josh Gad) comes across as a stock supporting oaf. "Love & Other Drugs" is a jagged little pill that, in the end, goes down too smoothly.

That the film's treatment of Parkinson's disease feels as respectful as it does is a credit to Hathaway's sensitive, understated rendering of her character's symptoms, which appear to manifest themselves only when most convenient for the narrative. Crucially, the actress makes Maggie a vivacious presence, the sheer force of her spirit serving as a rebuke to her physical setbacks and countering the film's generally insulting view of women (who fall into three basic categories here: bimbos, opportunists and Parkinson's patients). As Jamie, the ideally cast Gyllenhaal turns on the charm full force, his energetic puppy-dog demeanor all but daring the viewer not to buy whatever he's selling.

Smoothly mounted pic was lensed in and around Pittsburgh. Soundtrack, crammed with '90s hits, seems overly determined to underscore the pic's timeframe.

I especially love her final quote:

Hathaway refused nudity contract for movie
Nov. 12, 2010, 10:50 AM EST
WENN

Anne Hathaway turned down a nudity contract before filming sex scenes for new movie "Love and Other Drugs" because she didn't want strict rules to interfere with her performance.

The actress' free-spirited and confident character strips off her clothes frequently while romping with co-star Jake Gyllenhaal in the film.

And while Hathaway admits she was terrified about baring all on the big screen, she opted to waive the standard nudity agreement she was offered, which would have allowed her to dictate what can and can't be shown.

She tells Britain's Elle magazine, "I decided I didn't want to be doing these scenes and thinking, 'Oh, I can only turn my body 36 degrees, because we'll be breaking contract."

But Hathaway insists she is beginning to put aside her body insecurities and embrace her shape.

She adds: "I've hit the point in my life where I understand that being skinny is not sustainable, and nor is it advisable, and nor is it enjoyable."

Apparently, she did.  I got that article from a good source.

Perhaps she's preparing for some British monarchy role in the future?

Saturday Night Live Recap:
Anne Hathaway's Katie Holmes,
Abby Elliott's Rachel Maddow

11/21/10 at 12:55 PM

Last night, for perhaps the first time this season, Saturday Night Live  was consistently funny! Host Anne Hathaway showed commitment, playing Black Friday-shopping hillbillies and mocking Katie Holmes without holding back. The episode's Thanksgiving theme served it well: The opening monologue's driving joke was that the crux of the holiday's family-time is spent lying to make people happy, and other skits took place at funny places likes American shopping malls and soup kitchens. There was still some post-"Update" filler - like the "Wizard of Oz" sketch - but less than usual. Early online reactions have been positive: Entertainment Weekly  called the episode, "extremely amusing," noting that Hathaway was "brightly-lit, bold, and adventurous." The normally critical Jezebel commenterati exclaimed, "Can Anne host every week? They pulled out all the best skits for her, and she gives it everything." HitFix said: "A good overall show? Sure. Better than most this season? Yes. But that’s fairly faint praise." People on Twitter, well, they generally still hated it: "OK, #SNL really needs to clean house. Writing staff and on-air "talent" is sorely lacking in every regard," was one rallying cry. Anyway, awards:

Best Anne Hathaway Moment
The Black Friday skit turned the country's unofficial national shopping day into the horror movie it already actually is. It wasn't the most original take on the makeshift consumer holiday, but Anne Hathaway's few moments as a determined mall-shopper were memorably funny.

New York Magazine
Love and Other Drugs
REVIEW
By David Edelstein
Published Nov 21, 2010

Check out Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway on the cover of Entertainment Weekly  looking nekkid nekkid nekkid—a great come-on for Love & Other Drugs,  and not even false advertising. In the movie he is nekkid, and she is even nekkider, and they are very beautiful together in the nekkidness. The movie’s first half is a state-of-the-art Zeitgeist sex comedy, even if it’s set in 1996. It was morning in our brave new psychopharmacological world, and Big Pharma salesdude Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal) is at its hub, sweet-talking (and more or less bribing) physicians (and receptionists) into prescribing his SSRI (Zoloft) over an even slicker rival company’s (Prozac). He’s such a supple, smooth-faced, blue-eyed cutie that his transparently fake ingenuousness is more winning than other people’s genuine ingenuousness. And when word percolates up that his company has found the Holy Grail, the “fuck drug,” and called it “Viagra,” he really has the world by its gonads. Even better, he’s seeing gorgeous artist Maggie Murdock (Hathaway), with her dark eyes and swarm of dark ringlets and insatiable compulsion to get nekkid with him and then kick him out: She’ll be disappointed, she says, if it turns out he’s not a “shithead” and wants to commit.

This is gratifyingly slick and manic and mood-elevating. But Maggie has early-onset Parkinson’s (incurable, even by Big Pharma), and pretty soon you get the feeling she’s so commitment-averse because she’s afraid to show her deep-down, little-girl neediness. You also get the feeling that director Edward Zwick—who started with Thirtysomething  and moved on to Oscar-bait war movies—has rediscovered his inner Jason Reitman. Like the charismatically irresponsible heroes of Thank You for Smoking  and Up in the Air,  Jamie must develop a social conscience and learn to love.

Love & Other Drugs  is crazily uneven, jumping back and forth between jerk-off jokes and Parkinson’s sufferers sharing their stories of hope. It’s the sort of movie in which half the audience will be drying their eyes and the other half rolling them. In the first hour, Hathaway is impressive. She seems finally to have grown into those enormous features; her face no longer looks like a Disney Channel Halloween mask. But Zwick should have dialed her down a notch. By the end she’s a painful reminder of Liza Minnelli, another overeager, oversize-featured actress who tried to do too much with her too-muchness and left us crying for less.

Being without family since '08, last year I started my own Thanksgiving tradition of a double-feature at the cinema, followed by a big ole bag of Taco Bell, with all my fave items to take home and gorge on, and I had a blast.  Intend to do that again this Thursday, with LAOD followed by Burlesque.  I'm guessing that I'll be quite randy after that combination, whatcha think?

Movie Review
Love and Other Drugs

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway star in a period romantic comedy set in the 1990s.

A Young Viagra Salesman Sees Lust Turn Into Love
By A. O. SCOTT
Published: November 23, 2010

Since most romantic comedies take place in a perky, generic present, you may be surprised to see a note in the opening titles informing you that the action in “Love & Other Drugs” starts in 1996. Why so specific? Is there some world-historical event looming on the horizon that will change the characters’ lives forever? Or does the director, Edward Zwick, simply want to evoke a bygone-but-not-too-distant era when a young person could have a lot of fun and make a lot of money without worrying too much about whatever it is young people nowadays worry about (war, terrorism, recession, Facebook)?

The answer is, to some extent, both. The year 1996 was, among other things, that of “Jerry Maguire,” and in its freewheeling, fast-moving first act, “Love & Other Drugs” seems to be staking out similar thematic territory. (It also has some affinities with the more recent and somber “Up in the Air”).

We are introduced to Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal), a fellow brimming with self-confidence and cheerful aggression but not quite sure what to do with himself besides sell stuff (home electronics and then pharmaceuticals) and sleep with a lot of women. The underachieving son of an eminent Chicago doctor — Jamie’s sister is also in medicine, while his brother is a geeky software millionaire — Jamie has more charm than ambition. He’s a Clinton-era free spirit: feckless, a bit lost, waiting to see what kind of luck or love comes his way, but never doubting that something will.

Which brings us to the world-historical event that makes Jamie’s fortune and takes some pressure off the screenwriters (who are Mr. Zwick, his longtime collaborator Marshall Herskovitz and Charles Randolph, author of “The Life of David Gale,” among other things.) In 1998, you may recall, the real-life company Pfizer, the fictional Jamie’s employer, began marketing sildenafil citrate under the brand name Viagra. The rest is late-night talk show monologue history, and the filmmakers are not too proud to stoop to some easy, naughty and in some cases very funny jokes and gags, including an extended sequence involving the drug’s most notorious side effect.

Supply your own double entendre here. I’m not really allowed to. But “Love & Other Drugs” does not really stand or fall on the basis of its smutty, sexual humor. It does have some elements likely to be cherished by connoisseurs of coarse laughs, notably Jamie’s younger brother, Josh (Josh Gad), who is the tubby, shlubby, erotically challenged (if not downright gross) sidekick every big-screen player seems to need.

But low farce is only one substance in the film’s dispensary. “Love & Other Drugs” is a sometimes intoxicating, sometimes headache-inducing cocktail: a sweet, libidinous love story; a candid comedy of bedroom and workplace manners; and, most bravely, if also most jarringly, a medical melodrama involving a chronic and very serious disease.

Assigned to a rusty, reasonably picturesque stretch of the American heartland (and to a supervisor played by the reliably put-upon Oliver Platt), Jamie tries to persuade a hot-shot doctor (Hank Azaria) to prescribe Pfizer’s drug Zoloft instead of Prozac. The task has some perils (being punched out by a rival played by Gabriel Macht), and a few perks as well (going to bed with one of the doctor’s receptionists, played by Judy Greer). It also brings about a cute meeting with Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway), who sees right through Jamie’s game (not long after he peeks at her breasts) and plays along with it anyway.

Maggie is an artist (she seems to have moved into Melissa’s loft from “thirtysomething,” which remains Mr. Zwick and Mr. Herskovitz’s best work), an adventurer, and a bit of a cynic in matters of the heart. She also has early-onset Parkinson’s disease, an affliction that casts a complicated shadow over her relationship with Jamie and gives the movie a gravity it does not quite know how to handle. Now and then she experiences tremors and bouts of self-pity, but most of all her illness makes her wary of growing too close to Jamie and provides an explanation for her no-strings, commitment-shy approach to intimacy.

Ms. Hathaway and Mr. Gyllenhaal are frequently delightful to watch, and their ease together is a rebuke to the self-conscious, emotionally cautious protocols of modern movie romance. They look good in what might be considered period clothes — wayfarer sunglasses and crisp suits for him, waifish ensembles of knitted layers for her — and also in their birthday suits. Jamie and Maggie have fun in the sack, and on the floor, and wherever else the mood strikes. Their intense and almost immediate sexual connection opens the door to emotions that neither is quite prepared for but that neither wants to resist, and the actors are at their most appealing and persuasive when they explore the borderland between ardor and ambivalence.

But there is an asymmetry in the way the characters are conceived that undermines the film’s credibility. We know a lot about Jamie’s temperament, his ambitions and his background. His parents, played by George Segal and Jill Clayburgh (in her last film appearance), are on screen briefly, but they ground Jamie in a social and familial milieu and help us understand who he is.

Maggie, in contrast, is less a person than a sentimental, fairy-tale conceit: a tragic affliction, an artistic attitude and an unchecked libido conjured out of thin air to test her lover’s resolve and deepen his soul. That she often seems like more is entirely to Ms. Hathaway’s credit.

And it is to Mr. Zwick’s credit that “Love & Other Drugs” almost works, sustaining its blend of melodrama, low comedy and graceful wit for a good hour or so, but then succumbing to treacle, evasion and maudlin convention at the end. Unfortunately the effects of the movie, therapeutic and intoxicating though they are, wear off before it is over.

“Love & Other Drugs” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). A lot of sex, some (mostly legal) drugs.

LOVE & OTHER DRUGS

 • well, I won't
So, tonight, Lynne and I saw this film.  A few impressions.

Like I said, I stayed away from reading reviews or even seeing trailers.

Overall, we thought it was a very good film for Jake, especially after a long list of not-so-great films since BBM.

Not really a romantic comedy, just as much seriousness to it.  Surely, Jake and Anne have great chemistry.  And their psychological defenses are well explored here.

Nice to see Jake's character grow from callow to something deeper; and for Anne's character to let down her defenses.

Fun physical humor from both of them.  Nice to see Jake clean-shaven for a change.  Oh, yeah, lots of skin too.

Even with six years since BBM, it's easy to see many Jack-like expressions creeping in.

I could have done with less of Jake's nebbish brother, for sure.  Very annoying.

Especially fun for me to see both Oliver Platt and Hank Azaria in supporting roles here, as they were in college with me.  In fact, as an aside, I first saw Hank as Antonio and Oliver as Shylock in a 1982 production of "The Merchant of Venice"  at Tufts University.

Anne was particularly convincing in her, somewhat more difficult role.  Still couldn't take my eyes off Jake.  But, what else is new?

Thanks for the reviews, friends! I'm so relieved that Jake has found a role worthy of him again. Looking forward to seeing this!!

Almost forgot:  the first preview was for Jake's "Source Code", which looked like a cross between "Inception" and "Groundhog Day", but without overblown special effects and probably without much humor.

I echo everything that Paul said, except about going to school with movie stars :).

I loved this movie. A romantic comedy with some seriousness and depth. Both Jakey and Annie did terrific work here!  And about too much sex/nudity?  Not a bit, except that one scene of Jake's brother's behind.

Looking forward to seeing it again!!

I could have done with less of Jake's nebbish brother, for sure.  Very annoying.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm already annoyed--the Judd Apatow Factor is obviously (and calculatedly) inserted to bring in Apatow's Children to the theater. Ugh.

Love and Other Drugs  careens
from bathos to bromance
to naked sexytime.

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal
in Love and Other Drugs

One thing I'll say for Love and Other Drugs  (20th Century Fox): It doesn't feel like any other romantic comedy of recent years or, really, any romantic comedy I can think of. Though the film partakes in its share of the genre's clichés (including one character's last-act revelation that he or she truly loves another character after all, and must race across town to find him or her), it rarely inspires a fed-up eye roll. The expression it engenders is more of a quizzical knit brow.

What exactly is director and screenwriter Edward Zwick—co-creator of thirtysomething  and My So-Called Life,  whose last film was the WWII thriller Defiance —up to in this combination love story/medical drama/Big Pharma satire/raunchy sex comedy? Careening from bathos to bromance to naked sexytime, the movie is like a mashup of three or four different movies, at least two of them fairly unpleasant. And yet Love and Other Drugs  is so sincere and unjaded about its mystifying purpose that it keeps our gaze fixed on the screen for the full two hours. Or maybe that's just Anne Hathaway's nude body.

Hathaway's body is a perfectly acceptable reason to plunk down a ten-spot for this movie. Not only is it gorgeous—in a lanky-yet-voluptuous way you would probably never have guessed without the, er, access this movie provides—but Hathaway's face engages the camera like nobody's since early Julia Roberts. (Hathaway doesn't particularly resemble Roberts, but they share a toothiness and a luminescence.) The movie's attitude toward nudity is almost European in its casualness: In Hathaway's first scene she undergoes a breast exam, and just when you expect the camera to cut away demurely—pop! She yanks up her shirt and gives both doctor and audience a peek. The movie's unprurient randiness is one of its more lovable qualities; unlike most Hollywood films about two people falling in love, it acknowledges how big a part plain old-fashioned good sex plays in the process.

Good sex is especially important for the protagonists of Love and Other Drugs,  because it's one of their few ways of connecting successfully with other humans. Neither Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) nor Maggie Murdock (Hathaway) is your typical please-love-me rom-com character. Jamie is a fast-talking sales rep for Pfizer. It's the mid-'90s, and Jamie's days are spent pestering doctors to start prescribing Zoloft rather than Prozac as their antidepressant of choice. (The movie's portrait of the pharmaceutical industry is loosely based on a nonfiction book by a former Pfizer rep.) He's not having a lot of luck with the doctors, but he's cleaning up with their female receptionists and nurses—apparently all Jamie has to do is buy a woman flowers and ply her with patently insincere pickup lines, and she vaults into his bed. Jamie's slick charm is shown to us, right from the opening scene, as a transparently fake cover-up for his ambition and greed. He's not a bad guy at heart, but he's clearly damaged, and not in an appealing puppy-dog way.

Hathaway's Maggie also departs from the rom-com template of niceness: She's sexually aggressive, dirty-mouthed, reflexively sarcastic, and often self-pitying. Granted, Maggie has good reason to feel sorry for herself: At 26, she's been diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's, and she's staring down an unknown future that could include dementia and paralysis. When she meets Jamie at her doctor's office, she winds up in bed with him because she recognizes him as a kindred spirit, a fellow commitment-averse slut. And that's exactly the relationship they pursue, shagging Fatal Attraction -style against the kitchen sink and then repairing to their separate apartments, until Maggie's sickness gets worse and they begin, to their mutual horror, to care about one another.

But wait! Then Viagra is invented—we'd be in 1998 now—and the movie shifts gears into raucous sex comedy as Jamie becomes an overnight success, a high-living enabler of orgy enthusiasts and lubricious doctors (one of them played by an underused Hank Azaria). Oh, and Maggie attends a meeting of an advocacy group for Parkinson's patients and is inspired by the many high-functioning people she meets. Are we supposed to shed a tear for the sick girl, cheer on the activists, or laugh at the guy with a four-hour erection? In a way, it's to Zwick's credit that he expects us to have all three feelings, and a few others besides. In its best moments Love and Other Drugs  can have a James L. Brooksian amplitude of spirit. Unfortunately, there are long stretches in between when the movie just feels glib, sprawling, and confused.

Though their characters are drawn in richer detail than your usual Hollywood cutouts, Jamie and Maggie don't make that much sense, either together or apart. If Maggie really is as disgusted by the pharmaceutical industry as she claims, why does she cheer Jamie on as he makes a killing on the Viagra craze? Why do we learn virtually nothing about Maggie's family, while Jamie gets a whole scene with his clan? (His family is headed up by the late Jill Clayburgh, who appears, looking heartbreakingly lovely, as his mother in an early scene.) How come Oliver Platt appears once every 20 minutes as a character we're supposed to care about, but never gets a moment to establish his backstory?

Looking back on Love and Other Drugs,  I'm not even sure whether I can recommend it or not. It contains some "get me out of here" moments, many of them involving the character of Jamie's fat, nerdy brother (Josh Gad), but it also packs some powerful scenes between Hathaway and Gyllenhaal. Hathaway's performance is the showier one—she gets the trembling hands and the emotional breakdowns—but Gyllenhaal's is in its way more impressive, since he has the tougher job of turning an initially repellent character into a credible romantic hero.

Is there anyone out there who remembers Edward Zwick's first feature film, About Last Night…  (1986)? It was a loose adaptation of a David Mamet play in which Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, just grown out of their St. Elmo 's phase, played a pair of hard-partying young adults in Chicago who took a long time to realize that, beneath their veneer of studied indifference, they actually were made for each other. Jim Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins played their loyal, wisecracking seconds (and were both completely great—possibly the only time I've loved Jim Belushi in a role). Though I'm sure it would look corny and dated in retrospect, I have curiously fond memories of About Last Night…,  which, like this movie, is about two very specific and not always admirable characters falling reluctantly in love. See Love and Other Drugs,  wait 24 years, then get back to me.

Dana Stevens ... A. O. Scott ... You're quoting all my favorite film critics! If only Anthony Lane would review it, we'd have a troika.

I couldn't find the review at the New Yorker website, but I'm guessing David Denby handled this one, because I did find this:

Sex, Salad Dressing, and Jake Gyllenhaal
Posted by Jennifer Saura

Jake Gyllenhaal sat down with David Denby at SVA Theater 1 last night to discuss his past films and his newest, "Love and Other Drugs." Denby said that the scenes between Gyllenhaal and his love interest, played by Anne Hathaway, were "electrifying." "You may do for straight sex what you did for gay sex," he said.

Gyllenhaal, twenty-nine, has played lovers to many. He took a moment to reflect on movie kissing and sex. "There is a weird sense of being watched," he said. "You can't help but watch yourself, which takes the sexiness out of it."

Ed Zwick, who directed the film, was also on hand, providing fortune-cookie insights into some of the darkest mysteries of Hollywood, a faraway land where "casting is love" and "sex is funny."

Asked what's in store for the future, Gyllenhaal admitted to having other interests. "Paul Newman is someone who I admire," he says. "I think I could make a really good salad dressing, too."

Kelda, I didn't see that scene in the movie, and I don't know if it's even genuine or not.

I enjoyed the movie, but, dang it all, Brokeback has spoiled Jake movies for me forever, it seems!! When the movie started, Jake was selling electronic equipment, and I saw him selling combines and such. Then later, when he embraced Anne, crouched in misery, I saw the ending of the lake scene. It was the same thing throughout the movie...I kept seeing parallels to Brokeback!

In that scene I saw in the trailer, where Anne pops in for a surprise visit naked except for a coat, then drops the coat, does Jake keep steadfastly peeling potatoes and averting his eyes?

No, that scene was most akin to the reunion scene, because Jake and Anne were...overlooked! I can't say any more...spoilers you know!

I think that's respectable. LAOD will definitely improve through word of mouth. It will make money and besides, that's not the important thing: critical acclaim by film critics, scholars, and dedicated filmgoers is the thing.

I actually just saw this today, which inspired me to mosey on over here and see what Brokies thought of it. :)

I think I'm a little surprised it was even advertised as a romantic comedy. It definitely had those elements to it, but all those reviews are right. It's not typical.

And WOW, Jake and Anne's chemistry!  :o

Went this evening to see Jake's and Anne's new movie.  "Love and other drugs."  I
think it is the best movie he has done since BM.  She was spectacular, and he was awesome also.  The story was well written.  The chemistry between them is still quite
obvious.  The seem to belong together.  Its a pity that they aren't.  I did not notice the
amount of nudity to be too overly apparent.  Certainly not anything that did not fit
totally in the storyline.  Of course, its hard to go by me.  Nudity is not something I have a problem with at all.  Specially when its an integral part of the story.   In short I loved it.
I think it deserves Academy and Golden Globe notices.

Moving right along...after the movie I was struck by the crowd reaction. Little blue haired ladies were positively gushing over Jake!

Saw the movie

6/10 for plot

The characters were not developed enough, you don't know why one of the characters thinks the way they do about themselves, you don't know anything about the background of another.  You have introductions into the lives of peripheral characters that go nowhere, which makes you wonder why they were introduced in the first place.  And of course, very Hollywood unreal living conditions - how people can afford where they live, who is funding their careers, how their careers can afford so much time off and why someone else who doesn't have to is living the way they do.

10/10 for chemistry and very enjoyable nudity  ;D

I saw it last night and thought it was very entertaining.  The reviews are right--it can't make up its mind what kind of movie it is--but I just went with the flow and enjoyed it.  Very impressive work from Jake and Anne.  Jake especially has grown so much more confident since Brokeback, and this is the first movie where I've actually jumped on the bandwagon with those who adore his physical charms.  Like Lee, I was reminded of BBM a few times, especially in the last scene of the movie:  another parking lot confrontation and embrace, this time with a happier resolution.  :)

from Belfast Telegraph yesterday:

Gyllenhaal: Naked sex scenes a must

Thursday, 23 December 2010

Jake Gyllenhaal said getting naked for his new film was a must

Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed he and Love And Other Drugs co-star Anne Hathaway had to get completely naked for the film's sex scenes to make it believable.

The Brokeback Mountain star said he and Anne spend much of the film nude, because Jake doesn't recommend wearing boxer shorts while lovemaking.

He revealed: "I've never had sex with boxers on and it's an odd thing to watch an actor..."

Jake added, jokingly: "Not to say I haven't tried, but I don't recommend it."

The Hollywood heartthrob explained he felt it was important to show his and Anne's characters were truly comfortable around each other.

He said: "I think we all decided that if we were going to tell a love story, one of the essential elements of a love story is sex and it should be, and if we were going to be as open and intimate in the love story as we could be we'd have to the same thing in the sex.

"And when you see two people in a movie like that, particularly as an actor and they're portraying two people in love, it's like how do you really truly, even unconsciously believe that these two people are in love, if they don't want to be naked around each other, you know?

"So that was really important to us, because we knew that if we did we'd get somewhere in the audience's unconscious the idea that these two characters were actually in love and they weren't just actors telling a love story."

:: Love And Other Drugs is released in cinemas on Wednesday, December 29.

from Belfast Telegraph today:

Hathaway's close-up panic attacks

Friday, 24 December 2010

Anne Hathaway found new film Love and Other Drugs challenging

Anne Hathaway has revealed she suffered panic attacks before filming close-ups on her new film Love And Other Drugs.

The Devil Wears Prada star plays Maggie, a young artist with early onset Parkinson's Disease, who falls for a charismatic pharmaceutical salesman played by Jake Gyllenhaal. And while the pair spend much of the film frolicking naked in bed, Anne found her deep character hard to leave at work.

She revealed: "I'd have these little panics before we shot the close-ups and I would become terrified that I wasn't being truthful enough and Ed (director Edward Zwick) had to really sit there with me and hold my hand and be very patient and talk me through it.

"I hate being that kind of needy actor. I love just showing up and doing my job and it wasn't like that this time. But just like my character, I learned an awful lot about what it's like to need people around you and what it's like on the days where you can't get there yourself."

Anne explained she found the character very demanding.

She said: "I didn't know how not to take her home with me. I think in some ways because she's such a different character than me, I was afraid to let her go at the end of the day 'cos I thought oh gosh, what if she's not there in the morning.

"I was also playing a character who was trying to avoid feeling fear and so my comfort with my fear but her discomfort with hers and her attempt to avoid it and my inability to let her go at the end of the day created for some for very confused, tearful nights."

:: Love And Other Drugs is released in cinemas on Wednesday, December 29.

Saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it. Jake and Anne just spark on screen together they play off each other so well. I thought the brother added a needed light relief to the film. Cal thinks he could be the.new Seth rogan go to guy. But no way they look like brothers!

I FINALLY had the opportunity to watch Jake's new movie "Love and Other Drugs"

Here are a few thoughts (warning for general shallowness on my part)

As a Brokie, I was slightly apprehensive about watching this movie. Would it feel weird to watch "Lureen" and "Jack Twist" getting it on? Would I sit there and wonder "where the heck is Ennis?" Luckily, the movie is as far from Brokeback Mountain as one can get.

The move is set in the mid-nineties (underscored by songs by the Spin Doctors and Fatboy Slim among others) and is about pharmaceutical salesman, Jamie Randall (Jake), who cares for little more than selling the latest drugs (whether they are any good or not) and shagging. His good looks and talked about big dick helps. He really hits jackpot when he stumbles upon a new product called Viagra. Then one day he meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway), who is a Parkinson´s patient. They quickly jump into bed, both declaring they aren't interested in more than casual encounters. But their relationship deepens and the question becomes how these two people will find a way to be together in spite of her illness and his shallowness.

Funny things is, that as Jake's character progressively gets more depth, I as a viewer felt more and more shallow because all through the viewing (helped on by the fact that Jake constantly is naked and the large number of penis jokes) one single sentence kept running through my brains: OMG he is hot! So although the movie´s message was about love, it left the viewer (Ok - me anyway) feeling mostly lust (lusting after Jake, that is).

The downside is that the movie at times feels a bit rushed. Director Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai, Blood Diamonds) tries to squeeze too much into one movie. Is it mainly a love story or a story about living with an incurable disease or is Zwick trying to shine a light on the the pharmaceutical industry? All three storylines work very well in their own right, but the effort to combine all three causes the movie to loose some of its potential impact. But what´s left is still a nicely paced, witty and well-crafted movie.

On the performances: Jake is great. I wasn´t aware of how much I missed his goofy, quirky side until now (and congrats to him on his Golden Globe nomination). Jake is back in the game! As for Anne Hathaway she does a very good job too as the witty and strong, yet fragile, Maggie. Oliver Platt is also in it and (as always) gives a very solid performance.

I´m gonna watch it again. Right now in fact. And at times use the freeze button.

Btw Jake´s character was sometimes refered to as "Randall"only (it´s the characters´last name). Ouch! Every time that happened I was like: stop calling him that!

Sandy and I saw this again (for me) a couple of weeks ago, and IMO it stood up to a repeat viewing.
I'm not so interested (ahem...) in my Jake-lust anymore, but I loved and appreciated Jake and Anne's chemistry even more the second go-round. I think I need a copy to keep handy to watch in the same way it's good to have cookies around when you want comfort food.

*Like* very much!!

(And thanks for the wonderful night, Sandy -- Italian food and good friend talk -- priceless!)

In the way of odd Brokie coincidences, Sandy took me to the Alewife subway stop.   (It's a fish.) Anyhow, as she was backing out, I noticed this giant oval Pfizer sign that *had* to be square in the rear-view mirror!

What did Lila say? "I don't believe in coincidences..."

FINALLY got this from the library today.  I've had it on reserve for months and months, but I'm apparently not the only Jake and Anne fans in my town.

Will add my thoughts after I watch it one or two or three or four times tonight.

I've finally seen this movie, on Isle of Wight last weekend.

My impressions:

Jake and Anne are great. Good chemistry between them, good acting. As for reminders of BBM I was reminded of Lureen exactly two times, one when Anne's character was on the phone, and once I heard Lureen's voice when Anne said something I've now forgotten. And there was one or two moments where I briefly saw Jack Twist in one of Jake's facial expressions. Other than that, it was hard to connect the two actors with BBM, I think.

The story is crap. Very predictable, very shallow, very Hollywood.

The viewing was very enjoyable, since my co-viewers all are hardcore Jakeaholics, and there was a lot of stopping the movie and going back and forth in slow motion while commenting on and drooling over various Gyllenhaalic undressed body parts....    ::) ;D

I only watched it once last night.  Maybe I had built it up too much in my mind, but I didn't like it much at all.  Jake and Anne's acting was fine, but everything else just kinda annoyed me.  Reminded me one heck of a lot of "Sweet November" with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron from many years back.  I won't list the things I didn't like, for fear of having to get into a point-by-point discussion/dispute with a team of Jake-a-holics, ha-ha.  I'll give it another go this weekend; perhaps it'll grow on me.
