The "I LOVE everything Ennis" thread
« on: April 04, 2006, 12:20:06 am »
Moments ago, the I love everything threads on IMDb were wiped out :o, but thanks to the encouragement of people like Vikki, I didn't skip a beat, and started part deux of three of those threads. I'm only 20 minutes behind schedule in introducing ...
The "I LOVE everything Ennis" threadhere, on Heath's birthday. So here goes...  One thought per post please!

I Love/Love/Love Ennis's dependability - You know he'll always be there! - Thread or no thread!

‘cause the truth is, I already give him everythin’ I got to give, more than I ever even knew I had; ‘n it all for him, all of it, him who is my brother, my father, my child, my friend, my lover, my heart, my soul; my Ennis.

I love when Ennis comes out on the landing, looks down at Jack in the parking lot, spreads his hands, and says, "Jack fucking Twist!"

I swear. ... That's the happiest he looks in the whole movie. Pure joy at seeing Jack.

Gotta disagree there Jeff, - I think Ennis looks the happiest and the most <at peace with the world> when he's sending up a prayer to the heavens ... supposedly for Jack having forgotten his harmonica, but we all know the real reason for his total contentment! (the after-glow thingee) >:D

Roboy - you said it!  I love Ennis' gloves in his back pocket like that  :o  Here are some of the 'gloves-in-back-jeans-pocket' scenes:

- when he leans over to fix jack's truck when the summer was over;
- when he came home to his 2 sick girls and rushes off to comfort them
- when he asks Jack "you got a better idea?" during their confrontation by the lake.  ( I am always distracted in that scene, too focussed on checking out Ennis' behind  ;) )

Did I miss any?
Ennis is too friggin' adorable and hot!!
I LOVE him!

Interesting (to me anyway) fact: When Ennis goes to comfort his two sick girls is the only time the gloves are in his left back pocket. They're in the right every other time.

...Another time I am distracted by Ennis'  behind:  ;)

During the flashback scene, after Ennis lets go of jack and walks back to his horse, I just love the way he walks and mounts his horse and the way he rides off! :o

I totally understand why Jack waited for Ennis for 20 years - he is like a drug!  >:D
Did I already say that I love him?

I love all of the above. I love the way Ennis coughs, cig in mouth, when he's packing up the horse to head to the pup tent the first time. See? I love Ennis so much that I am thrilled to hear him cough!

Its a sad moment, but its one of Heath's most powerful: in the motel scene, there's this little glint in his eye and a hint of a smile on his mouth for the whole scene, just chatting to Jack, enjoying a smoke a cuddle in the arms of the one he loves and the INSTANT Jack asks "what're we gonna do now?".... the happiness on Ennis's face dies. The glint and the smile are gone and its replaced by this coldness and the reality of their situation.  Its not a happy moment, but the acting by Heath is incredible.  So subtle and so amazingly gut wrenching.   :'(

I love the way Ennis picks up Jr's Sweater, that she forgot, and gently folds it, then tenderly kisses it and placed it in the closert where he keeps the shirts and his shrine to his love for Jack.

I love Ennis' expression when he thanks Mrs.Twist for the shirts.  He's quiet, so he doesn't rouse the attention of John Twist and the moment is between he and Mrs. Twist (does she have a first name?)  His eyes are red-rimmed and she knows both that he's the reason behind those two shirts and that he has been crying and will continue to do so.   :'(

This part also would be a good post for the "I love everything Mrs. Twist" thread (is there one?) -- whom I love primarily because she is so kind to Ennis. Whom I especially love.

But let's me think, what can I add to this great thread ...

OK, here's a big one: I love Ennis for his cognitive dissonance. The way he on throws Jack off of him in TS1 and the final lake scene, and then two seconds later passionately grabs Jack as if his life depended on it, which in fact it does.

And here's a little one: I love Ennis for the way his chest heaves after kissing Jack in the reunion scene.

Okay, don't know if I have already mentioned it in this thread .. but I have mentioned it in all the I love everything Ennis threads that Roland has started:  ;D

I love the way Ennis sits very suggestively spread-eagled-like on the couch after a coupla beers, waiting anxiously for Jack on 'that' day!  I mean, he was oozing hotness in that scene ...  ::)

Agreed.  I love how he lights that cigarette after he says, "...if he shows" as he's looking out the window for him again.  And how he's drunk seven beers by the time he shows up (I believe I counted) and smoked God knows how many cigarettes trying to calm his nerves (and libido) waiting for him.

I counted eight, but I could be wrong. When Ennis is onscreen, I have a hard time focusing on anything else.

Hehe ...I counted 6 empty ones and the 7th in his hand!  ;D

And I agree with Barb, love the way he says "...if he shows", shaking his leg so nervously.
I mean, if Ennis didn't realise that he was hopelessly in love with Jack at that point, then he wouldn't have known it either if it was tattooed on his forehead ... or if a giant box labelled "Ennis is in love with Jack" hit him hard over the head!

More on the reunion.. I love the way Ennis gazes into Jack's eyes as he's trying to detach and go up to the apartment.  I think this is inbetween kiss and nuzzle. I just love the look in his eyes there... accompanied by Jack's stunned amazement.

How can anyone not love everything Ennis? If you'd ask me in what scene I do not love him, it'll be easier. Can't keep my eyes off him when he is on screen. I guess I missed the one or other Jack moment/facial expression for always looking at Ennis.

Some of the more obvious and most popular aren't mentioned here yet. They were mentioned often on IMDB threads, and I think they belong here, too. So I take a classic one for my first post on this thread:

I love Ennis always tucking in his shirt.

And I love these "I love everything..." threads. We should make them grow and grow... Thanks roboy (spelling?) for recreating them here on bettermost.

Hey, Penthesilea, that's exactly how I feel. I'm so glad to have you around, because we are in the minority here. But that's OK, too.

Hey now people.  I disapprove of pitting Ennis against Jack or Jack against Ennis. As Proulx says you can't have Ennis without Jack.

So here's an important classic.

I love Ennis for loving Jack best.

Amanda, you are right, of course, and very fair. Beyond my own unavoidable preference I'm not crazy about the pitting either, though mainly because Ennis usually fares worse. I always feel bad for him and want to leap to his defense, or at least offer some balance to the Jackophilia.

For a while on imdb, I considered starting a thread called "in defense of Ennis," because I feel he frequently gets judged too harshly. But the "ILE Ennis" thread goes a long way in that direction.

It wasn't my intention pitting Ennis against Jack or vice verca. I sure love them both. Annie said it best.
However.... I can't help being Ennisphil.

Another one:

I love Ennis in the beginning of the scond tent scene: looking for a second at Jack, looking away, looking again... He can't stand it to look openly at Jack face to face (at this point).

Those on-screen beers that Ennis drank in the Riverton Apartment while waiting for Jack to arrive, did he chug-a-lug them or did he take his time drinking them?

In the book, Ennis is apparently completely sober when Jack finally shows up in the late afternoon after Ennis waited all the day long. Annie Proulx has Ennis mentioning going out with Jack and getting drunk, as opposed to Alma's idea of going to a restaurant/cafe to eat. And, in the book, it was Jack who ran up the stairs to where Ennis was standing.

I love the fact that Ennis was sort of like a kid anxiously waiting for the delivery of a coveted toy at home to come by parcel post. That is implied in the movie and in the book, too.

LOL, I love the idea of "Jackophilia".  :D  I'm certainly guilty of this.

Hmmm, back to normal now...

I love Ennis for humming when he's around Jack.

For me, the movie Ennis is oh so much more poignant - His attempt at vomiting, and his wall punching is this intensive reaction to the seperation that tells oh so much more that the line in the book. I do love Ennis' intense emotion at that moment - gets to me so much more effectively than in the telling.

Yes, I agree with that. It's even more touching in the movie. In fact, this is the point where I start tearing up for the first time during the movie (not at my first viewing, but at repeated viewings).
But I love that story Ennis is more capable of showing his feelings towards Jack. Same in the "Tell you what - truth is, sometimes I miss you so bad..."-scene. Jack's words in the story are different but Ennis then puts his arm around Jack and pulls him close. And Jack needs this so badly and he deserves it so much. And I love story Ennis for doing it.

I ask this question in relation to what your response was, "Why didn't they have Ennis driving his own truck like in the book version?"

They could have had Ennis's face showing that he was getting a queasy feeling while he was behind the wheel and then do the same dramatic thing of banging his head against the truck instead of a wall.

There are many things in the story which could have been adapted for the movie and left in the same location as in the book. When Ennis mentions the thing that grabbed them at the wrong place, he said it in the Motel Siesta while not too far from the Riverton Apartment. In the movie, Ennis did not say it until the next night when they were camping out and sitting by a campfire.

Maybe we need two threads: "I love everything Story Ennis" and "I love everything Movie Ennis." I would post on the latter much more often because, like you guys, I love the poignancy of all ME's conflicting emotions. SE is much more emotionally direct. The tender words are nice, but wouldn't fit ME. If ME could express his feelings as openly as SE, he wouldn't be ME.

Katherine -

You Go Girl.

I like seeing a long "I love everything Ennis" thread, but maybe others will prefer things your way. Why don't you start one (or both) and see which thread form becomes more useful.  ;)

Sorry, I didn't say why I like it better this way! It allows for comparisons should that be the point of the posters. Also when both are the same, again a single thread might be more useful - But I know you well enough Katherine to suggest that this is not likely to be your last interesting idea.  :) - What do others think?

Actually, I was saying it a bit facetiously. I think in actuality it would be hard to divide Ennis into two threads, because although I see Story and Movie as just about two different characters, there are probably others who see them as overlapping or intertwined.

But don't worry, Amanda, if that happened we'd give equal time to Jack. (In fact, there's an interesting issue: We rarely distinguish between Story Jack and Movie Jack, but there are some differences there, too, hunh? OT for this thread, I know, but maybe they'll come up up elsewhere.)

And Roland, why thanks!! :)

I love the way Ennis makes scent memories by smelling things, like Jr.s Sweater and the Jack Shirt and the description of the room when they girls were babies...."Their bedroom was full of the smell of old blood and milk and baby shit and the sounds were of squalling and sucking and Alma's sleepy groans, all reassuring of fecundity and life's continuance to one who worked with livestock"...this is how Ennis understood his world.

I love Ennis stumbling: when he goes after the dumbass mules, right before the first tent scene (that's the best one), at his argument with Alma outside with the girls on the swing ('Need a push?'). Did I forget any stumbling?

Well, it's not exactly stumbling, but close: when he loses his grip on the pot he's washing in the river and it starts floating away. That's cute, too -- and symbolic, as we learned in the bucket thread!

Yes, and what's cute about all those bumbling things is their contrast to his casual proficiecy at other skills: riding, herding sheep, shooting coyotes and elk, fixing trucks, etc.

I love Ennis because he's a study in contrasts.

I get a lot of insight in regard to Ennis from what Annie Proulx wrote about him early in the book:

Quote
Ennis, reared by his older brother and sister after their parents drove off the only curve on Dead Horse Road leaving them twenty-four dollars in cash and a two-mortgage ranch, applied at age fourteen for a hardship license that let him make the hour-long trip from the ranch to the high school. The pickup was old, no heater, one windshield wiper and bad tires; when the transmission went there was no money to fix it. He had wanted to be a sophomore, felt the word carried a kind of distinction, but the truck broke down short of it, pitching him directly into ranch work.

 . . . .

Ennis, high-arched nose and narrow face, was scruffy and a little cave-chested, balanced a small torso on long, caliper legs, possessed a muscular and supple body made for the horse and for fighting. His reflexes were uncommonly quick and he was farsighted enough to dislike reading anything except Hamley's saddle catalog.

Ennis seems to have a bit of a vision problem and that might have had an effect on his learning in school. My older brother who ended up completely his high school education by correspondence after he was 18 years old had many skills like Ennis did. I could trust him to work on any vehicle I owned while Lewis was alive. While Lewis's face did not look like the book's Ennis, he did look more like him in his build. Lewis was skinny most of his life until his illness related to heart problems caused him to gain extra weight. Lewis did have a vision problem and because he was left-handed, he as discriminated against by a teacher who thought people should only use their right hands to write.

Like Ennis, Lewis should never gotten married either. Lewis did love his children very much and the Movie Ennis loved his children, too. Lewis learned to do things by watching others do them and in contrast, it was easier for me to read a book or instruction manual to learn to do the same things.

Oh, I am amused that Ennis did not know what "Sophomore" really meant. Who would want to be classified as a "wise-fool" or a "foolishly wise person?"

Maybe it's been said before, but it deserves being repeated if it had been said

I LOVE Ennis' vulnerability at the  beginning of the movie. In the bar scene, he's so fragile, sucking slowly on his beer (can't afford many more - compared to Jack), taking out his half used cigarette (gotta pace his cigs usage - they cost money too - even rollies), borrowing the lighter, and answering in such weighed words - never one word too many.

Starboardlight, on another thread brought out the resemblance of this scene to the other bar scene where Alma Jr. is just as insecure, and weighs every one of her few words to express herself "You're good enough, I guess..." (at practically the same age as her daddy was at the beginning of the movie!)

I love the way Ennis says, "Huh?"... and I love his subtle humor and, in spite of his troubled mind and heavy heart, I love everything else about him.  God bless all lonesome true hearts in boots and jeans, I love him almost as much as Jack did!  I hope he finds someone similar to Jack and has a somewhat happy ending.

Yeah that is a powerful scene.  WHY does it all have to end in heartache?  Can,t we have a happy ending just for once?  I think after 20 years they deserved it. :'( :'( :'(

Everything I love about Ennis has been said.  :)

I just love that with Ennis, "what you see is what you get" - Jack knew Ennis' deeply private and introverted personality right from that summer of 63, he knew that Ennis was in deep denial about his sexuality .. he knew all those things, yet he couldn't help but love Ennis and continue to do so for 20 years!  There is an honesty and directness to Ennis that I love, despite his many flaws.

I love the way Ennis convinces Alma to take the girls (in the grocery store, while the heifers are calving) through the silent communication of his eyes.  He speaks volumes with that look.

Well... since you asked, I guess I will give a definitive answer... I think they're dirty because they just finished having sex outside and his jeans got dirty from, well, having sex outside.  The same is true of Jack's jeans in the flashback scene.  By the way, I was not the first person to notice or comment upon these little details, but I do find them great little touches.  This, I think is Lee's way of hinting at Proulx's line "They never talked about the sex, let it happen, at first only in the tent at night, then in the full daylight with the hot sun striking down, and at evening in the fire glow..."

OK, I'm getting back on topic...

I love Ennis for wiping his mouth as he enters the apartment to introduce Jack to Alma following the reunion kiss.

Hi Amanda,

ok, but I mean really REALLY REALLY definitive.    :) ;D

I had a feeling that they just did something sexual outside, yeah.  and it seems that they just finished doing so?  But specifically what had they done?  Ennis' knees were very muddy, Jack's knees were not.  if they were both on their knees doing the same as in FNIT, I would expect both guys' to have muddy knees.  But Jack's knees were not muddy, sooo....  I wonder if Ennis had just gone on his knees in front of Jack and gave Jack a bj.  It apprears that that may be the case, and if that is what they had just done, then that I believe would disprove that the Happy Tussle was the very next morning after SNIT.  Hell I don't believe it was the very next morning, bj or no bj, but there was a time when I had to puzzle this out for myself bcz it sure looks like it is the very next morning the way AL has both those scenes smack-dab butted up against each other that-a-way  :D.  At first viewing it did seem that it was the next morning...  you know what I mean....

Anyway the other reason why I am very  preocupied with Ennis' muddy knees (aside from the fantasy-inducing aspects of this yummy topic  ;D)  is that of course what Ennis did sexually with Jack and when he did it is VERY germane to his acceptance of his homosexuality.

I am still to this day trying to wrap my brain around everyting from when did Ennis *know* that he was gay, when did he *know* that it was love that he had for Jack, when did he *know* that Jack loved him, was Ennis trying to pull away from Jack, was Jack thinking about / planning to quit Ennis, what did all those things mean, that Jack said to Ennis, and what did Ennis mean by what he said during the fight by the lake, the whole ball of wax.  Because of reading differing viewpoints on the many ambiguous, critical scenes and climaxes in the film, I am still muddled.  So many of the interpretations segue into the next, and the next, you know what I mean...

Sooo, that is why I am asking about the muddy knees, if I just go along with what AP wrote (or rather did not write) in the story, Ennis did not have much of a sexual repertoire, in other words he was very repressed sexually, and her line

Quote
... Nothing marred it, even the knowledge that Ennis would not then embrace him face to face because he did not want to see nor feel that it was Jack he held. And maybe, he thought, they'd never got much farther than that. Let be, let be.

says to me that he never accepted that he loved a man, ie never accepted that he was homosexual...  ok now this is getting way to complicated, must go and read other light-hearted threads.....  must watch Youtube....  must read fanfic.....   To be continiued (but not on this thread). ;D   I know I have gone waaay OT, so I will stop here....  One day, (not tonight I'm afraid) I'm gonna start me a thread about all this stuff....

Hi Jane, at the risk of getting in trouble with Roland (who moderates this forum and is strict about staying on topic) I will say that 1) I hope you DO start a thread about "unanswered questions" or "what did Ennis know and when did he know it" or whatever 2) IMO, I don't think the happy tussle occurred the next day, necessarily 3) well, I have lots to say on all these things, including the AP line, but I'll wait for your thread so as not to go too OT ...

So, in keeping with rules: I love Ennis because, no matter whether he realizes early on that he loves Jack or not, he sure always acts like he does!

Along those lines, I love the way Ennis goes out of his way to sneak a peak at Jack when Aguirre is on the phone and Jack isn't looking at him in Aguirre's trailer.  And I'm gonna break with rules and say I also love how deep, dark and delicious his eyes look and how open and vulnerable his face is right then.

I love Ennis's awkwardness both times we see him dancing with Cassie.  Two different kinds of awkwardness too.  Tells us boat loads about Ennis's comfort-level around Cassie.

I love Ennis because however he feels, whether confused, fearful, angry or calm, feeling sad, feeling guilty, in failure or success, in grief or joy, he does his best and though his best isn't always "good enough", he's continues to try, he continues to learn.  He is his humble self completely.  I love that about him.

I have been thinking a lot lately, of how Ennis practically ravished Jack in that reunion scene.

It was so out of character for him to take the lead and push him against the wall and be the agressor in that kiss....it was probably the only time in the movie when Ennis was the aggresive one, and he didnt care where he was or frightened that someone might see him....I think he actually surprised Jack, but it didnt take long for Jack to respond.

I remember when i first watched the movie, and I was wondering how they were going to react to one another when they met again after the four year lapse, and i was so surprised when Ennis grabbed hold of Jack, and of course, that kiss, was just the best "hello" kiss I have ever seen.

I just love Ennis for doing that.

I love how Ennis, upon decending the stairs at Jack's parents house and reentering the kitchen, made a slight and mere jesture with the rolled up shirts, as if to present his treasure to Jack's Mom and say, without speaking, 'may I have this?'.

My impression of that scene, was that he was showing Mrs Twist that he had found the shirts, and her nod of the head, seemed to indicate, that she knew what they were, and was glad Ennis had them.

I mean, if Ennis didn't realise that he was hopelessly in love with Jack at that point, then he wouldn't have known it either if it was tattooed on his forehead ... or if a giant box labelled "Ennis is in love with Jack" hit him hard over the head!

*sigh* All those butterflies in his stomach.... :D

Yesterday I saw the movie again and found another cough I love (oh my, I'm so glad I'm not the only lunatic here  ;)):
When he comes home to the Riverton apartment (and will get Jack's first postcard a few seconds later): he parks his car and heads up the stairs, a thermos in his hand.  There is another absolutely lovable cough.

I Love Ennis blow up with jealousy in the last round on the Mexican idea.

jack should have knocked him down, kidnaped and drunk him with sleeping pills for couple of days, settled some minor issues (i.e. noticing the families, quiting jobs, etc etc) and make him nowhere to go back except with... tara!!.. Jack F***ing Twist!!

uuh, uuh  ;). The correct answer would be:  I'll take a cup a coffee, but I can't eat no cake just now. But don't worry, must be the well-known Brokeback-fever that got you confused  :).
And thank you for bringing this thread to new life.

I just reread the whole thread and  :o uuups. There are so many classics that aren't mentioned yet. So here we go:

Last night in tent: I love how Ennis puts his arm around Jack while sleeping.

(And I love Ang for giving us this brief shot. It's like a ray of sunshine in this part of the movie)

Thanks for pointing this out, Meryl. I never noticed it before. It's quite low, so it slipped my attention. But it didn't slip Cassie's attention, like you said.

I love Ennis caressing Jack's arm in the motel scene.

well...i do remember short ones like " Ennis Del Mar he used to say..."

I love that Ennis calls Jack "Lil Darlin"

I love how Ennis looks like a little boy all fidgety in front of Agurries trailer.

I love how Ennis lets go on Jack in the second tent scene.

I love how Ennis Nuzzles Jack in the reunion scene.

I love how Ennis is all antsy waiting for Jack to show up.

I love how Ennis drops the coffee pot in the river cussing Jack the whole time.

I LOVE ENNIS when he says, "Whut?" after he started opening up to Jack, talking about himself and finds Jack practically grinning at him . . . and then keeps talking!

I LOVE ENNIS in his painful exhale after he tells Jack "ain't no reins on this one," and is immediately comforted by Jack's touch.

I LOVE ENNIS when he tearfully whispers, "I love you," into the shirts he just discovered!

I LOVE ENNIS when he "fixes" the crooked post card on the closet door!

I LOVE ENNIS because he loved Jack with all his heart and all his being!

I love the fact that Ennis loves his children and that he loves Jack in his own way

I love when Ennis opens up to Jack about his family in the bar and at camp

I love the way that he rushes before he goes to meet Jack

I love how he hummed to Jack in the Dozy Embrace and before the bear scene

I love how Ennis punches the words out of his mouth

and I loved when he said, "as long as we can ride it, and ain't no reigns on this one."

For how long? As long as we can ride it; ain't no reins on this one.

I love Ennis because he had a great amount of love to give,in spite of himself.
And because he's the role that made me know and love Heath and his superb interpretation.
I like your silences, quiet conversations of evident sensations, where our words are life´s tinsels.
The lost illusions are the found truths.

Thanks for pointing this out, Meryl. I never noticed it before. It's quite low, so it slipped my attention. But it didn't slip Cassie's attention, like you said.

I love Ennis caressing Jack's arm in the motel scene.

That caressing scene is one of my favourites,he also gives such a lovely smile at the same time.It melts my heart. They both at that time seem so completely at ease with each other. The guilt etc has yet to rear its ugly head again. They are just in the moment.I can remember a few times like that in my life.Very happy memories too

I love Ennis for frequently stealing glances at Jack early on in the summer of '63 (before the boys are together).  He's attracted despite himself and almost unawares.  Adorable.

I  love Ennis because he is unforgettable, and he was brought to life by Heath. So I now have an amazing reminder of a truly unique actor and human.
