Celebrating Six Months: Our All-Time Favorite Posts
« on: October 04, 2006, 05:54:47 pm »
I'd like to kick off a series of "Celebrating Six Months of BetterMost" cyber-events here. All of you have been kicking around some great ideas for discussions, chats, and polls relating to this milestone. There was one idea that I just couldn't wait to implement: reviewing our favorite posts of the last six months. Please think back to the posts you've read that opened your eyes to an aspect of the movie, story, or people here that you didn't know about before. The posts that made you think, cry, or laugh so hard that you spit coffee all over the keyboard. Please let us know about them, with or without a link (we can all enjoy hunting for the link and whoever finds it first gets a bronzed BetterMost bean for a trophy, complete with a kick of the can sound effect!)

Disclaimer: To the smart-alec out there who wants to point out that BetterMost has bean in business for more than six months, I say "sure enough" but we're celebrating now anyway! Plus, a lot of Tremblayans are celebrating six months of being here too, so we'll have some topics related to this interesting sub-group.

Okay, I just happen to have a contribution to start this off! In fact, two!

Reading this always brings a lump to my throat.

A toast to two of my favourite posters, Toast and Alec. You've brought me a lot of joy, and I thank you.

That's a good idea!

The coffee got spat all over the keyboard as I read "BBM through the looking glass" by Sheyne, the "commercial breaks during BBM", the "lines you won't hear in BBM"...
I'll have a look and update with the heading of a thread I discovered just 2 days ago, which deals with the movie vs short story I think. I was so amazed to read such new (to me) thoughts about BBM after all this time.

Thanks for that Toast link on the letter D - never been on that forum before - that was definitively a very special post.

I had a hard time picking just one of the posts on the "Brokeback Slang" thread. There are soooo many hilarious ones! But here are a couple, by henrypie and Sheyne.

Lee, that's great idea for a thread.

I laughed my ass off, thanks Lee. I hadn't seen this before cos I don't participate in the performance thread (and I don't quite get it).

2 weeks ago I had my personal 6 months celebration of seeing Brokeback Mountain for the first time. My personal 6 months celebration of being on BetterMost will be end of this month.

I've read many great, great posts here. My fav comical thread is "Brokeback through the looking glass" . OMG, I just re-read it a couple of days ago and at one point I had to visit the bathroom immediately, I laughed so hard.

There were many posts with great insight into the movie, most of them in the Open Forum, which is my favourite Forum.

And many posts that moved me to tears. Sorry, but I don't want to sort them out now. Makes me all teary again.
But what comes to my mind without much thinking are jpwagoneer's photo captions/fantasy scenes. Some of them are really moving. Here's one:

Those are great links! Brought tears to my eyes. And now, I want to send out some accolades in the musical division. This was really hard! But I had to go for Celeste (Yaapyar)'s rendition of "Ennis" in the style of West Side Story's "Maria." The graphics that go with this are fabulous! And a close second is The Stud Duck (David)'s other WSS knock-offs, which follow Celeste's:

http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php?topic=2739.msg46081;topicseen#msg46081

But I must also mention my FRiend Toast's xcellent version of "Send in the ABC Clownz" too. I'm off to reread and find that link now...

I'm coming up on my own six-month anniversary this Sunday. Yup, it was March 8 when I first posted here. Never been an early-adopter type, but I definitely had a low startle point when it came to those trolls at Pierre Tremblay!

Talk about a low startle point! I went back to IMDB today and there was a terrible post about Heath...I can not say more...it was removed shortly after, but shook me up tremendously. I am so gratefull for this troll-free place.

It's pretty much impossible to isolate individual posts as the best out of so many gems here.  So, I'll highlight a few threads.

The "Brokeback Through the Looking Glass" thread is pretty priceless for comedy.  http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php?topic=478.0

And, in terms of my favorite wacky topics for a thread... it has to be the coffeepot/ bucket thread with ever multiplying topics...

Aww, thanks, Meryl.  :)

OMG, the Thirteenth of October is next Friday, a week from today!  :o  Wish I could take the day off to celebrate properly.

I don't know whether anybody managed to save the threads, but I loved "Cowboy Etiquette," and the one Leslie started, the title of which now escapes me, about cowboys can do things the rest of us can't.

Umm ... I hate to reveal my ignorance, and I'm probably going to have my BetterMost membership rescinded for this, but what is the significance of Oct. 13? (Besides the fact that it's Friday the 13th this year.)

Many people contributed to making the "buckets" thread the eclectic delight that it is, but one of my early favorites is that of one of our long-time Tremblayans, John Gallagher, who I count as a friend and sympatico person:

don't forget the haikus, limericks, and other poetry. There were such amazing creativity that we all generated as a way of expressing the heart aches and soulful joys this film brought to us.

I haven't been here very long but I have been lurking and reading a lot. So I hope no one minds that I add my 2 cents here.    I have to say one of my favorite threads so far, just for the shear creativity and good natured humor of it is Anke's "Line's Visualized thread.  it's one of the best here for opening my eyes to more depth in the words and dialog of the story and film.  We can learn a lot through humor, about life, about art, about ourselves.

Okay.  I love Brokeback through the looking glass.  I love the Lines Visualised thread.  For community building and bonding I love the What do We all Look Like thread.  But I just saw something that has to be a sentimental favorite for me.

I looked back over the BBM DVD WATCHING Habits and Reactions: THINKIN' OUT LOUD... POWERFUL FILM SCENES thread, in which I said this on May 21st, 2006...

"I've only watched my DVD once because I keep seeing it in theatres here!  To be expected in San Francisco I guess.  Although I loved watching the 2nd tent scene at 1/4 speed on DVD.

Now that I think about it, I like watching and pausing on still frames of the two of them being affectionate.  I am so going to meet my future partner this year.  Unless I don't I guess."

But I did.  Five days later.  <sigh>  ;D

Talk about a low startle point! I went back to IMDB today and there was a terrible post about Heath...I can not say more...it was removed shortly after, but shook me up tremendously. I am so gratefull for this troll-free place.

I remember this post clearly. It was an announcement that Heath Ledger had been shot and killed. An ominous portent, but when January 22, 2008 rolled around, I didn't believe the sad news until my friend EDelMar told me. Then I knew it had to be true.  :'(
