Jane emailed me again a few days ago. She's still battling her cancer. The chemotherapy is taking a toll on her. Her legs are swollen and she must use a cane to get around. Apparently each progressive chemo takes more effort to recover from. Her doctor is giving her a few weeks off from the treatments.

She seems to be keeping her moods up though. Very perky and she still has her wonderful sense of humor. So that is a very good sign, I think!

She wanted me to say hey to you all for her and to tell you she loves you.  :)

Tell her she is in our thoughts!

I haven't heard anything from her since that last email, Del and Kelda. But I'll certainly let her know just as soon as she contacts me!

Hello everyone.

I'm very sad to say that Gary Cottle just posted on Facebook that Shasta passed away a few weeks ago.

Velda Jane Sykes Swain, 57, of Manila, Ark., went to heaven Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Osceola, Ark., to the late Charles and Kathleen Sykes who died when she was five years old. She was raised by her grandparents, the late Frank and Althea Westmorlan.

Will you play my record? One-track mind!

This is very sad news, indeed.  I never met Shasta, but we always exchanged holiday cards and talked some about what teaching was like.  That's a nice picture, Paul - thank you.

Knowing how much she suffered, I'm almost relieved to hear this. I'm glad she was able to take comfort in our favorite movie and book. I'm thankful to Gary for finding out and letting us know. Thanks also for the wonderful photo.
