Hollywood’s 25 most romantic films
Posted by Online on Sep 11th, 2013

‘BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN’ – The September issue of Vanity Fair listed “Hollywood’s 25 most romantic films, spanning more than 90 years.
Would you believe that included on the list is “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as cowboy lovers?

Laura Jacobs writes, “It’s a testament to our increasing enlightenment that this movie about the secret love affair between two cowboys ranks 12th among the highest-grossing romantic dramas of all time.”
Well, times and taste have, indeed, changed.

GREATEST LOVE STORIES – The 24 other “greatest love stories the movies ever told,” according to Vanity Fair, in no particular order.

“The Age of Innocence” (1993), Daniel Day Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder.
“The Americanization of Emily” (1964), Julie Andrews, James Garner.
“Before Sunrise Before Sunset/Before Midnight” (1995, 2004, 2013) – trilogy – Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke.
“Brief Encounter” (1945), Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte.
“Casablanca” (1942), Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman.
“The English Patient” (1996), Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas.
“Ghost” (1990), Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze.
“Holiday” (1938), Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant.
“I Know Where I’m Going” (1945), Wendy Hiller, Roger Livesey.
“It Happened One Night “ (1934), Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert.
“The Long, Hot summer” (1958), Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward.
“Love Affair” (1939), “An Affair to Remember” (1957), Charles Boyer, Irene Dunne and Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, respectively.
“Love Story” (1970), Ryan O’Neal, Ali MacGraw.
“Notorious” (1946), Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant.
“Now, Voyager” (1942), Bette Davis, Paul Henreid.
“An Officer and A Gentleman” (1982), Richard Gere, Debra Winger.
“The Remains of the Day” (1993), Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins.
“Roman Holiday” (1953), Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn.
“Say Anything” (1989), John Cusack, Ione Skye, Lili Taylor.
“Sense and Sensibility” (1995), Kate Winslet, Colin Firth.
“The Shop Around the Corner” (1940), Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart.
“The Way We were” (1973), Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford.
“Working Girl” (1988), Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Melanie Griffith.

So there you have Hollywood’s 25 most romantic films. This columnist was looking for “Camille” (Greta Garbo, Robert Taylor), “Titanic” (Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet), “Gone with the Wind” (Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable). But then these films are probably more tragic than romantic.

"Working Girl"?  Really?  As a top 25 greatest love story?  I don't see it.

If I were to quibble, I have to say'Notorious" is way more suspense than romance.  As romance, it's more than a bit creepy.  (So is "The English Patient".)  Still, 'Notorious" is one of my favorite Hitchcock films (and it has certain thematic parallels with Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution."
