Lorde

She's 17!  Gorgeous, lovely voice, and seems, in an interview I saw, very down-to-earth for her years...

November 13th, 2013

New Zealand chart topping sensation Lorde finally ended a publishing bidding war by signing with Songs Music Publishing in what is reported to be a multi-million dollar deal.

Billboard reports the 17-year-old Lorde signed a publishing deal worth $2.5 million on her recent 17th birthday after attracting at least six major publishers, each seeking her lucrative signature.

Her single ‘Royals’ lasted six weeks in the number one spot on the US charts; making her the longest tenured female to hold the position while her debut album, Pure Heroine, became the second fastest selling album of the year and launched at No.1 on the Australian ARIA Chart.

Although her music is not to my taste,  we are very proud of her achievements here in New Zealand. And she does seem to be very sensible for her age.

I quite like Lorde--
and I really, really liked Royals
(as did a lot of people!)
and I thought the
video very interesting

Already there have been many
cover versions of the song by
other people, self-produced
and posted on Youtube--

This might be one of
the more intriguing--

Lorde became the first solo New Zealander to hit #1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 with "Royals".

The first act ever was a duet, "Sombody That I Used To Know" by Gotye (Australian) featuring Kimbra (New Zealander).

When Billboard did their Year End countdown of the top 100 songs of the year, "Royals" by Lorde ended up as the #15 song of 2013.

Will you play my record? One-track mind!

She's up for 4 Grammys tonight, snubbed for best new artist...

Record of the year: Royals
Song of the year:  Royals
Best pop solo performance:  Royals
Best pop vocal album: Pure Heroine

And she made the cover of Rolling Stone (she's in the Sylvia Plath life-stage, right on target for a 17 year old rebel girl)

Lorde is 17, lives with her parents and loves Sylvia Plath. She also has a worldwide smash with "Royals," four Grammy nominations and acclaim for her smart, unique debut album, Pure Heroine. How'd she become the unlikeliest superstar in pop? Contributing editor Rob Tannenbaum travels to Ella Yelich-O'Connor's New Zealand home to answer that question in our new issue (on stands Friday).
