Why would anybody even think this was necessary?  ???

I hope those rumours are false.

There's absolutely nothing a remake can do better than the original.

It's only been 12 years or so.  It's too soon for a "remake"

actually, for BBM there may be a time where it's 'too late' for a remake.

If attitudes towards the lgbtiq community continue to change, a remake of Brokeback would be seen almost as a 'period  piece' where you have to go back in time for the story to be plausible.

Literally disgusting.  :-X

But beware. It could happen--Spiderman and Batman reboots/re-re-reboots are just now assumed. And now we have heard this:

(FYI: Gross.  :P :P :P )

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/matrix-reboot-works-at-warner-bros-986292

While some at Warners consider the title [The Matrix] among the studio's sacrosanct properties, like Casablanca, others see a need to redevelop it in an environment where studios are desperately looking for ways to monetize their libraries and branded IP is hard to come by.

'The Matrix' Reboot in the Works at Warner Bros.
(Exclusive)

by Borys Kit, Kim Masters, Rebecca Ford
MARCH 14, 2017 6:13pm PT

The 1999 sci-fi movie is coming back.

More Matrix ? Bet on it.

It's still not clear what shape the project will take, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix, the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment.

Sources say there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star, but much must be done before the project is ready to go.

At this point, the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved and the nature of their potential engagement with a new version has not been determined. Certainly, Warners would want the two filmmakers to give at minimum a blessing to the nascent project. The studio had no comment.

Joel Silver, who produced the original trilogy, is said to have approached Warners about the idea of mining The Matrix  for a potential new film. However, Silver sold his interest in all his movies to the studio in 2012 for about $30 million, according to sources. Warners is said to be leery of including him in any meaningful role, as he not only has a reputation for budget-control issues, but apparently has a strained relationship with the Wachowskis. The siblings hold much more meaning for fans than the producer. Silver's reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Written and directed by the Wachowskis, the original movie sees humanity living in a simulated reality, unaware that humans are in pods in which their bodies are being harvested for energy. A computer programmer named Neo (Keanu Reeves) slowly becomes aware of this suppressed existence, eventually becoming humanity's one true hope (Neo = One) to overthrow the oppressors. The pic also starred Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving.

The Matrix was released in a quiet period of the 1999 release calendar — March 31 — and Warner Bros. didn't have outsized expectations for an action movie with obvious manga and comic-book influences. But the story and groundbreaking special effects (including the slow-motion "bullet time" effect, which launched dozens of imitators in the years that followed) became the highest-grossing R-rated film of 1999 in North America, and the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year worldwide. It also won four Academy Awards.

Two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were not as well received, but Reeves' deal for those films made him one of the richest actors in Hollywood.

While promoting John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves said he would be open to returning for another installment of the franchise if the Wachowskis were involved. "They would have to write it and direct it. And then we'd see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that'd be weird, but why not?" he told Yahoo Movies. However, it is likely that Warners will look elsewhere to attract an A-list director and star.

While some at Warners consider the title among the studio's sacrosanct properties, like Casablanca, others see a need to redevelop it in an environment where studios are desperately looking for ways to monetize their libraries and branded IP is hard to come by.

The idea of adapting The Matrix as a television series was nixed in recent months. But Warner Bros. sees a model in what Disney and Lucasfilm have done with Star Wars, exploring the hidden corners of the universe with movies such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story or the in-production young Han Solo film. Perhaps a young Morpheus movie could come out of the exploration, as an example.

Penn is a writer with deep roots in the geeky genres in which Matrix travels. He created the Syfy network's superpowered show Alphas and has been involved in comic-book movies ranging from the X-Men franchise to The Avengers.

Guys! Guys!

Surely, this sounds like a ridiculous idea at first! But wasn't the initial idea kind of "crazy", too? "Love story of two gay cowboys"?? It was a miracle that Ang Lee was able to create this movie SO perfectly! [Well, the original material was great, too.]

Anyway, i would totally support the idea of a remake if they show us MORE or their love and passion, LESS pain and a MORE happy ending!!! So that we can stop torturing us with Ang Lee's version! Anybody with me?????????

Maybe it's the fact that i watched the movie so late, but i feel in a way it became kind of a "taboo" subject - especially because it is a totally heartbreaking story AND because Heath died  :'(. Jake G is never glad to talk about it. His face gets so sad each time somebody asks him about Heath or BBM and he sighs deeply. There are no more of Ang Lee's comments (he kind of disappeared, too), hardly any deleted scenes or other extras. As everybody points out we are all left with "never enough"... I would be actually quite interested to see a remake  ;D

A remake isn't necessary as the original one was an instant classic. Maybe in 50 years or so.

Hey TrentonT!

You're new, right? Wanna talk?  ;D I'm feeling quite lonely here, talking all by myself :).

As for the remake - sure, you're right, it is an instant classic. Actually i have this idea that every director and actor should have some kind of classic (like in theater) which they should challenge themselves with, so that the audience can have different versions / interpretations of the same story. It would be quite interesting to watch. Since Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is just SO perfect i would not feel offended if the remake sucks.

I agree, it wouldn't have anywhere near the same impact at all.

As for a happy ending, the reason it hit everyone so hard is exactly because of the ending.  For a HEA, it would have turned into just another movie - it wouldn't have left people sitting in their seats as the credits rolled, unable to get up, not knowing what just hit them, not knowing how to accept it, where to go and who to talk to about it - and i certainly don't think it would have created the community around discussions and interpretations of every single scene and line of dialogue, not to mention scenes with NO dialogue (what did that look mean?)

I also can't imagine any music for a remake that could be better than the original Santaolalla masterpiece - those first two chords.  Improve on that?  I don't think so.

I agree, N. I think there are many reasons for the eartquake it caused in all of us, but the not-HEA ending is certainly one of them.

And those two first chords.............

Hey, i'll take that back about the happy ending  ;D. Party because i somehow came to consensus with the current one.

I don't know whether anything (even music) can be done better, but i'm sure that several things can be done differently without changing the whole story or the characters. One example that pops up in my mind is the Romeo and Juliet version with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. It's the same story and the same characters, but in a different setting. I don't mean to say that it was a brilliant movie, but it was in a way refreshing ;).

Well, sure i can smart off endlessly here, but - truth is - i surely have no idea about shooting / directing movies, acting or writing movie scripts!  ;D ;D

I'm on the fence when it comes to remakes.  I don't want to say that the originals should never be touched, but at the same time, I often feel with a remake "been there, done that".   I think Hollywood does so many remakes because it's so hard to write good, original, material.

Cellar Dweller,

I see your point from a creative point of view... or from "business" point of view (Hollywood always exploiting old ideas for money's sake, rarely creating something truly new). But i think from the point of view of CRAFT of acting, movie directing, screenplay writing it is always a nice challenge to do pick up a classic and make an own version of it. It's not copying in that way, but a way of expressing one's own interpretation. Brokeback Mountain was a beautifully crafted masterpiece. Surely, i don't know, but i assume there are lots of actors / directors who think they should have done it (if they are really into challenges and exploring their craft).

I don't think a BBM remake could work.

Usually, a movie made based off of literature has some big differences from the  story.   This time, the screenplay was pretty true to the story.  I think a remake would have to move away from the book, and then it would be so different, it wouldn't be BBM anymore.

There are a few "remakes" out there:
  • The opera with libretto by Annie Proulx - has a different take on a few things, most of which I didn't like.
On YouTube, you can find acting students playing the "I don't know how to quit you" scene and the pre-reunion scene, putting emphasis in different places from the movie version. Some are really good.
Here I will commit a huge sacrilege and say that what I would like to see is a sequel -- Ennis coming to terms with himself and having a happier ending that we were left with. I know most will disagree, vehemently!

BBM-victim, I get what you're saying about doing a remake from a creative point of view, to let someone else craft their own interpretation.

Personally, I'm not interested in it. To me, BBM as we know it is perfect, and I don't care about other people's creative interpretations.

I want to watch it exactly as it is, I don't want to compare different versions to each other.

Oh, I hope there will be no remake of BBM! IMO the movie is perfect the way it is.

I once read that P. Almodovar would have included more and extended sex scenes in the movie. Sure that would appeal to many people...  ;D but for me there aren't any other actors  I see fit to play Ennis and Jack. Because for me JG and HL are Ennis and Jack. It's that simple.

BTW I think there were  too many remakes produced at Hollywood lately. It's all for the money, that's quite clear. A movie that made a lot of money in 2005 and became kind of a "milestone" will probably make a lot of money again. It's probably a safe bet (in terms of money), Ok, but do you know any example of a remake that has really worked (in terms of art/craft)?
