I love the look on Jack's face when he dips his bandanna in the hot water to clean Ennis's cut.

I love the way Jack says "time to get going, cowboy" so affectionately after he lassos Ennis
‘cause the truth is, I already give him everythin’ I got to give, more than I ever even knew I had; ‘n it all for him, all of it, him who is my brother, my father, my child, my friend, my lover, my heart, my soul; my Ennis.

Yes, Ruby! I love the way Jack always smiles so cutely and good-naturedly whenever Ennis teases him. Come to think of it, I just love his smile, period. So much so that I even love it when it looks kind of pasted on, as when he's dancing with Lureen!

I love Jack's face, in every scene it steals the show.
But the best scene to show off that face, is the one where Ennis is pouting on the side of the hill because they have to go, and Jack picks up his lassoo.
Jack steps into closeup, and there is that face expressing care, concern and love.
He wonders how he can extend their time together, now that Aguirre has decided to bring them down from the mountain.
Will Ennis choose him or Alma?
There is so much love and desire in that face.

I love Jack for being bold and for having the guts to take chances.  I love him for 'getting the ball rolling', so to speak, in the tent on that cold night.  I love that he didn't get caught up with what might happen, he threw those cares to the wind!  Love Jack Nasty!   8)

I love the way Jack shows Ennis he already has a lit cigarette right after Aguirre says "You ranch stiffs - you ain't never no good."  Ennis offers him a drag of his smoke in a commiserating manner, and Jack, still pissed about the dirty punch, just turns his right hand enough without even looking at him as if to say, "Yeah, suck on it - I got my own."

I didn't even notice that is what was going on there!  After bazillion viewings, still didnt catch that...
Will be lookin' out for it tonight!  ;)

It's incredibly subtle, like most other things in this movie.  If you blink, you'll miss it.  Just watch closely right after Aguirre says "You ranch stiffs - you ain't never no good."  Ennis shakes his head in a disgusted manner, really as if he's trying to commiserate with Jack, then leans his hand holding his cigarette ever so slightly in his direction without even looking at him as if he's offering the peace pipe.  Without missing a beat, Jack just turns his right hand that's hanging over the fence rightside up enough to show he already has his own.  I find it to be another one of those amazing unspoken moments.  It shows so much - the familiarity and intimacy between the two of them, and Ennis trying feebly to make peace with the head shake that is really much more characteristically Jack than him, then offering the smoke, then getting rebuffed.  Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

By the way... this is an incredibly good observation!  Awesome.  I've never noticed that before.

I love the symphony of expressions on Jack's face during the reunion scene.  Going from delight at first seeing Ennis/ during initial hug, to slight confusion while Ennis is pushing him to the wall, to the half-crying/ half-in-ecstacy look on his face as he clings to Ennis's face, etc.

Heya Roland,
Yes, I've finally found my way back onto these threads.   :)

I love that Jack emerges with his shirt still untucked following the first tent scene.  An amazing detail showing how vulnerable he is at this moment (combined with the look of concern on his face).

Jack Twist was/is a special person (even if he came from the mind of Annie Proulx).

Jack was willing to give up his life that had been like living a lie and be in a permanent relationship with Ennis Del Mar. But, he had to have Ennis willing to be in partnership with him.

Jack had it in his personality that he was not a loner and needed a companion to give him support for everything he did. His plans did not come to pass because he was only dreaming dreams; it was because for him to realize his dreams, he had to have a partner.

Thanks for that insight.
Maybe that is the message from Jack to me.
I think I got the message from Ennis earlier.
 ... but Jack's dreams needed a partner.
I have so many dreams, too.

The harmonica is mentioned only one time in the original story and that was after it had been flattened after Jack fell off the bay mare. Jack was not the only singer in the AP story. They never complained about each other's music although neither was actually talented vocally. That's another thing to like about Jack while still being OT here.

I love Jack in the motel scene: the smile that goes along with "Redlined it all the way...". Ahhh, <melting>  And I love the kiss on Ennis's hair behind the ear. I didn't discover this kiss until a few days ago, because it was left out in the German dubbed version: you can not hear it.

I love the way Jack drags so thoughtfully on all those cigarettes, especially the one he's smokin' when he sees Ennis' fire down below, so to speak.  And the way he licks his lips afterwards, too - makes me wonder if they taste buttery, like Heath's favorite smokes.  :)

I love the way Jack drags so thoughtfully on all those cigarettes, especially the one he's smokin' when he sees Ennis' fire down below, so to speak.  And the way he licks his lips afterwards, too - makes me wonder if they taste buttery, like Heath's favorite smokes.  :)

Barb - What do you mean "Ennis' fire down below"? (barb nasty!) and oh yea, how come you know that Ennis' smokes taste buttery, Hunh?!!?? Ha! - BTDT?

I Love Jack's gentle nature with Ennis - never struck him once - except by accident - & even then - that's how the talisman (the two shirts) came to be. "Jack Nasty" ... I think not!

I love the way his mouth tips when he smiles/laughs.......(in real life and in the movie)....

Love it when he sits at the top of the mountain and looks down on Ennis' fire below...thinking of him....

Absolutely love the way the eyebrow goes up when he hints to Ennis about coming back next summer....

I love the way Jack says, "All right."  I love it when he kicks his truck, love it when he's shaving in the rearview mirror and is lookin' at Ennis (sly devil), love how he says, "Son of a Bitch" in the reunion hug.  I love Ennis' late arrival after the bear... Jack's anger turns so quickly to compassion as he tries to wipe Ennis' bloody head.  I love it when he tell his father in law to "Sit your ignorant ass down before I knock it into next week!" But most of all, I love Jack for knowing who he is and how he feels about Ennis.  Jack may have died, but Jack's love never does.

Agreed Amanda!  ;D

I love Jack because he was just so hopeful and dreamy and incredibly hot!  ;)

I love the hopeful look on his face when he asks Aguirre: "Ennis del Mar ain't been around, has he?"...
Like he was holding his breathe, thinking of how badly he would like to see Ennis again.
Then Aguirre shot his plane right out of the sky with his 'rose-stemming' comment.. ::)

I love the way Jack is genuinely interested in everything about Ennis' life.

I love when Jack stands up to his father in law.

I love the way Jack is so tender with Ennis in the second tent scene.

I love the way Jack is so hopeful...every time.

-when they part the first time 'think you'll come back next summer'
-when he goes next summer and asks for Ennis
-in the motel room, after the first reunion, 'what are we gonna do?'
-at the campsite, 'it could always be like this'
-after the divorce 'here I am'
-their last time together. 'we should go to Mexico'

Just every time, so hopeful, just trying so hard to make it happen.  Imagine all the hours he spent thinking of what their life could be like. Imagine him getting that card about the divorce and driving 14 hours! to be rejected...again.  Oh, it's just so sad. But every time he comes back with those eyes, and that hope in his heart.

I love when Jack says that Bobby's teacher doesn't like him because he "complains too much"- it shows he cares, unlike Lureen who won't even call for a tutor.

I love Jack's bitching - "That pup tent smells like cat piss or worse," "Ya know, I'm commutin' 4 hours a day...," "Ya won't get much sleep, I can tell ya that," "Aguirre got all over my case like I was s'posed to control the weather," "Beats workin' for my old man - can't please my old man no way," "Why powder your nose just to go home and go to bed?"  "No more beans!"

As you guys mentioned, I love it all the more when he says "I complain too much" because it's just about the essence of him (in not such a negative way, of course), and he sums it up himself in that one little phrase.

I love watching Jack's face in the scene right before he tells Ennis that's the most Ennis has spoken in two weeks- you can tell he's just enjoying listening to Ennis talk, listening to his voice.

I love the very characteristic way Jack makes his entrance into the film. As the train disappears into the distance, we see Jack's truck driving towards us, backfiring, the engine obviously in need of a tune-up. It lumbers into its parking place, backskids and then stalls. Jack gets out angrily, kicks the tyre and mutters 'S**t', before turning to notice Ennis standing there.

Even before we see Jack, we get the impression that he's the one who will be generating the humour in the film.
I gave him what I hoped was that hopeful innocent puppy look that said “don’t you just want ta rub my tummy” rather than that hungry, ravenous wolf look that said “why don’t you just come out a that brick house so I can eat you up little pig?” LVH: 'What I did on my Day Off'

I think the subject line says it for me: I LOVE EVERYTHING JACK - do I have to pick just one? I love-love-love how he looks in the flashback scene. His face is so soft & beautiful. I also love how he may get discouraged but never gives up. Jake said about Jack, "He tries really hard."

i love the scene where Jack in a bubbly way is describing how they can get their little cow&calf operation--"her dad would give me the down payment just to get lost, he as much as said it!" He's happy and thrilled while he's talking about how others put him down and humiliate him, but he doesn't let it get to him, not one bit!

I'll bet if they had their little cow&calf operation, it would have eased Ennis's longing for his little girls, having a huge number of female bovines to take care of!!

I love Jack's eyelashes when he blinks several times the second night in the tent as he takes Ennis' hat away right before he kisses him so tender but with a hunger... During the renion kiss, I love Jack's eyelashes and the look of a love struck boy when Ennis pulls apart from him and begins to walk away.  Jack stands there just kinda awe struck at what just happened his eyelashes long ...and sadly i love Jack's eyelashes when he's crying in his truck after being turned away from Ennis after his divorce came through...the song A Love That Will Never Grow Old his playing on the radio...

I've been thinking on this observation, or musing of yours, Lee, and it intrigues me in how it suggests that part of Ennis longed for the feminine, and not necessarily in a sexual way. Jungian psychology articulates how we all have masculine and feminine aspects to our personae, and a well-balanced person has both complementary aspects integrated within themselves. Ennis, a very masculine character, was drawn to Jack, who to my mind exhibits both the feminine and masculine within himself. During the course of the story, Ennis learns bit by bit from Jack's example, and becomes more expressive and nurturing as a result. And, as his daughters are, apart from Jack, the great loves of Ennis's life, a strong feminine presence will remain in Ennis's ken for the remainder of his existence. What might be lost is the fulfillment of the masculine yearning exemplified by Jack.

Just thinking out loud...

That always reminds me of a bull pawing the ground and snorting - especially as we know Jack's longing to be a major rodeo star.

Along the lines of Jack being a comfortable dancer, I love how comfortable in his own skin Jack is.  Even when he is treading lightly with Ennis because he knows he has such a low startle point, he never appears the least bit insecure (with the exception of the post-divorce scene, and I think that's what makes it so heartbreaking to me).

Quiet confidence is probably the most attractive human trait to me - even moreso than a good sense of humor and intelligence, although those are tied for a close second.

I beg to differ: when they part after Brokeback, Jack is highly insecure (not that it is not understandable).
With Lureen in the bar: it is her who makes the first move. She even jokes about it (waitin' for a mating call?).
When he returns next summer to Aguirre's trailer and Aguirre conftronts him: he is brave, but alarmed and nervous and sure not comfortable in his own skin (again: understandable).

To follow the rules:
I love when Jack is wearing the bandana (e.g. when he comes back to camp and Ennis isn't there). God, that bandana makes him even hotter  ::) He should have worn it all the time.

Those rules went out with the decline in interest in these threads - I don't hold anyone to them anymore - but I appreciate being able to read more ways we love our characters.

BTW, looking at some of Tom of Finland's early 60's work, they (bandanas) were quite the "hot gay" thing to wear in those days - don't know if the general population thought it sexy, but Tom's work seems to confirm a "period/era" reality to the perception that bandanas worn on the neck was  sexually attractive/masculine.

Then came the leather (aaaah)

I'll give you the first one.  But I don't think he even begins to feel insecure until Ennis responds with, "Like I say, me and Alma's gettin' married in November, ... , you?"  It's quite similar to the post-divorce scene that way, I reckon.  He doesn't begin to feel insecure there until after he says, "So here I am" and Ennis, again, retreats from him.

But I can't give you the second one.  I don't think it occurs to him to make any kind of a move with her until he learns of all the money her Daddy has.  He's aware she's checking him out, but he's not attracted to her.  I kind of think he's hoping she'll dance with someone else and leave him alone until he hears about the money.

Hi Barb,

I checked those three scenes on my DVD a few minutes ago.

I'll give you the first one.  But I don't think he even begins to feel insecure until Ennis responds with,
"Like I say, me and Alma's gettin' married in November, ... , you?"

Well, this in the beginning of the scene. First thing said is: "Give it some gas", then "I can't believe I left my damned shirt up there."
And Jack is clearly uncomfortable about Ennis's remark (no wonder), answers only with a lukewarm "Right"
Next he asks Ennis about next summer. And while doing so (before Ennis's answer about
marrying Alma), you can see and hear in his facial expression and voice his doubts, insecurity and
hopes. He is clearly and understandably anxious about what Ennis might say.

But I can't give you the second one.  I don't think it occurs to him to make any kind of a move

Again, I have a different impression. I think he is intrigued by and interested in her sassy appearance before he knows about the money (the looks he gives her along with her hat and in the bar before he asks the barkeeper about her). But if he's indeed insecure or just undecided is arguable. I believe it's both.

Another exapmle: the morning after TS1.

I agree with you that compared to Ennis, Jack is wonderful self-confident. He is remarkably comfortable in his skin measured by his time and upbringing. But "never appears the least bit insecure" - sorry, I still can't agree with that.
"It is my feeling that a story is not finished until it is read, and that the reader finishes it through his or her life experience, prejudices, world view and thoughts." - Annie Proulx
She and Ang indeed gave us a whole lot to fill in with our own experiences etc., didn't they? No wonder after so many months we still find things to discuss and to dis/-agree about.

re: bandanas

Here's the image from Tom of Finland that led me to think of bandanas as a supposedly masculine touch, in the gay world - in the early 60's (of course I'm not completely certain of the date of this image - nor do I think that bandana adds anything to masculinity, in this image)

And here are two othe images, from Tom of Finland which also uses bandanas, though again, they aren't what I find most attractive about these pics again - I believe that they're from the sixties - but by this time, there's a lot more leather in Tom's pics

But I just love Jack with his bandana.  It's so cowboyish and sexy.  And Jack pulls it off quite nicely with his outfit and coloring.  He's a "killer" all right.

I couldn't agree more.   And what a way to go.  ;D

Penth, I think maybe we're just disagreeing on semantics.  I think one can be quietly confident and comfortable in his own skin but yet still be occasionally vulnerable.  I think maybe that's what I find so appealing about Jack, and about other fictional characters and real men I've historically been the most attracted to - someone who is generally self-possessed and self-assured always puts me at ease.  But someone who has those qualities and yet is too cold-hearted to ever have his soul laid bare by another human being is not appealing to me at all.  Always and forever, whenever a character (or someone I know personally) who is confident and assured (without being cocky, of course, because that's a sure sign of insecurity) suddenly looks at the object of his affection with the eyes of a child, I say good-bye to a little piece of my heart.  I don't see children as insecure - just trusting and naive in their trust - vulnerable.  They're perhaps on the same tree, but different branches in my mind.

Penth: Jack does NOT say "right," no matter how recently you saw the DVD, he says "yeah," and it's the most perfect one-syllable lie I ever heard...

Agree that Jack finds Lureen attractive; this is different from being attracted to her.

I don't like hunks, straigtht or gay, but Jack in his bandana is definitely hot. Hey, just try to imagine Jack in any outfit, from any period of history....hot.

Just remembered: In "Cruising," there is a whole big deal about what color bandana you have sticking out of your back pocket, and what it means you're in the market for I rather liked "Cruising," (I know many didnh't), but I never could figure out the ending.....
I overall disliked Cruising (the one time I saw it on cable TV), and did agree with many of its critics that it was homophobic, but didn't think that the element of a gay serial killer alone made it homophobic (anyone remember the name Jeffery Dahmer?). I remember the scenes involving the color-coded bandanas, and the second of these scenes is one of many that I felt contributed to the homophobic tone of the movie.

As for the ending (possible spoiler warning here), there is the strong implication that Al Pacino's character has become a self-hating homosexual serial killer in his turn. Pacino gives a good performance in this, by the way, but this doesn't mitigate the homophobic tone of the overall production.

I agree that Jack says "Yeah" after Ennis said he left his shirt up there.  But Jack did say "Right" after Ennis said,"...I guess I'll see you around, huh?"  I guess that's what confused us.

I can't agree more on your comment regarding finding someone attractive vs. attracted to someone.  To me, finding someone attractive just means that you think they're good-looking but not necessarily that you like them.

I like hunks of either kind and I think Jack looks hunky in that cowboy outfit.  It would be interesting to see Jack in different outfit of history, but I think I like his cowboy self the most.

I love the way he finds Ennis's hand so quick without opening his eyes, and the way he looks so calmly at him after Ennis says "what'r you doin'?" and the way he reaches across to grab Ennis's hand at the end of the sex, and so,ebody stop me!

Jack's gifted with good sensoric nerves a guess.

maybe an off topic but a always want to know was Jack hurt on the fisrt sex? seems so quick with no prep...

In real life, I don't see  how someone in Jack's position could not be hurt by the rough tryst we see in that scene--not to be vulgar, but saliva does not good lubrication make. For the story and film's purposes, perhaps we are being implicitly asked to suspend belief a little bit at this moment.

On the other hand, maybe we are meant to infer that Jack did hurt, yet nonetheless submitted to the experience (which he, after all, initiated). He was so attracted to Ennis, and possibly even already in love with him, that even this rough intimacy might have been more than welcome to his mind.

What I LOVE most about Jack: crooked smile

I LOVE Jack's resilience: He has the capacity to love despite a deprived childhood and the ability to be thrown from a bull, get up, and do it again.

I LOVE Jack's bitching: He makes bitching and swearing into an art form.

Hello Moremojo!

thanks for the view. yeah i guess so.  :-\ about the pain I mean. but i bet he had longed for such intimacy since few days before.

anyway,

I Love Jack for: his patience and endurance. just take the post-divorce scene..if that happened to me, i might have been evaluating my whole relationship...and just sink for disappointment.  :'(

but not our hero Jack

i love that jack likes things with a low startle point...the bouncy mare, and ennis..and was determined to tame both of them....

i love jack when he is contemplating something, and sticks his tongue in the corner of his mouth and looks so sexy and puzzled...

I love that Jack is the one and only thing that makes Ennis really smile  :)
I saw you were sick and tired of my wrong turns.
If you only knew the way I feel,
I'd really love to tell you,
But I could never seem to say
The things I needed to.
On a day like today
No other words would do.

so thoughtful..Jack always has a good knowledge on what's going on with Ennis.

I love Jacks crooked smile. The way his lips draw up to the right.

I love how he ropes Ennis when it's time to leave and how he tries to calm Ennis down when he realizes Ennis is angry during the fight scene.

I love how he gently takes Ennis hat away in the 2nd tent scene.

I love how he looks at Ennis as he rides away after the Dozy Embrace.

Aw hell, I just love Jack! ;D

I'm not sure exactly where this post belongs (mods, feel free to advise), but as this is a Jack thread, I thought it might be germane here. The following URL provides the link to a photograph of Prince Lennart of Sweden with his father Prince Wilhelm (Prince Wilhelm is at the right). Prince Lennart here really reminds me of young Jack Twist (Annie's Jack, not the movie's), though Jack at this age would not have been quite old enough to have been entrusted with sheepherding on a mountain (with its accompanying adventures). I think it's the far-off, dreamy expression on the Prince's face that helps bring Jack to mind:

*Swoons* Oh I agree, that leaning on the truck is a classic scene, he is so devilishly sexy here, my sister and I were gasping the first time we saw the movie!

That's what I love about Jack too, he is so sweet and almost naive in how sees the world, but on the other hand he has this almost devil-like sexiness about him... Mmmm... the perfect combo in a man...

I LOVE JACK when he gives Ennis the quizzical look and tells him that he doesn't know what the Pentecost is, after practically screaming "Water Walking Jesus."

And I LOVE JACK when he practically growls at Ennis, offering him another shot of whiskey after Ennis tells him that he hasn't yet had the opportunity to be a sinner.  BTW, an early version of the screenplay actually has Ennis say that Alma hasn't yet given him the opportunity to be a sinner.  I prefer the final version that makes no reference at all to Alma.  Thank YEEOOOOU!

I love the close-ups of Jack's face when he lovingly looks at Ennis ride off. I also love when he puts his head down in the DE, love how he tells off L.D., and I love when he says to Lureen-"I never gave any thought," after she asks him why husbands don't never want to dance with their wives.

I love how he was willing to take a chance to live the "sweet life" with Ennis regardless of society's homophobia.

I also love the fact that he was a nice and caring young man.

For how long? As long as we can ride it; ain't no reins on this one.

One thing I couldn't understand about Jack is why he kept those shirts hidden lo those many years. I don't think Jack could've kept them a secret very easily. It must have been very hard for him. He probably kept the shirts at Lightning Flat instead of Childress because otherwise he would have been tempted to bring them out and show them to Ennis and/or his wife or Randall.
