"Give 'em hell" line
« on: April 05, 2006, 11:10:52 am »
This has been discussed since John (jmmgallagher) came upon this lovely revelation when viewing his DVD a few weeks ago:  Just before the first tent scene, when a drunk Ennis says "I'm gonna go ride out there to the sheep", it was discovered (and quite surprisingly and humourously to many) that Jack responds, "Give 'em hell!"

Well, I've paid particular attention to this during my subsequent viewings (all in the theatre) since then, and let me throw this out there:  to me, it sounds like it's Ennis who says "Give 'em hell!", as if he's continuing the thought he started about riding out the sheep.

Now, I hate to start a "Sorry" vs. "S'allright" thingy, but I wanted to throw it out.  So all of you with DVDs, please watch it again and discuss!!!!  And straighten me out of I'm wrong!  ;)

when there's a conversation, you see [Ennis] or [Jack] about the line. and the line floats toward the side of the screen that the character is on. In this scene there's no name above the line, only that it sit toward Jack's side of the screen. That's the only indication that Jack is saying the line.

I just watched 3 times and I'm almost (90%) positive it's Jack.

I'll have to look again but I also thought it was Ennis. It just sounds more like him.

What I like even more is how closely they seem to be lying together when they get up after being passed out. I've always thought they were pretty close but in brighter viewings later on in my run of them, it seems like their legs must be touching. Makes me think that Ennis getting THAT drunk was partly due to the attraction he was feeling for Jack, and how he did that to cope with it. Kind of OT for this thread, but viewpoints are welcome and respected.

I definitely think it's true. I think he stayed and drank with Jack because he enjoyed spending time with him, kept not wanting to leave Jack's company so soon.

I'm in the Jack camp. He is barely visible in the dark and as Ennis says he's gotta get back to the sheep you see Jack move and the sound comes from that part of the scene-as Starboardlight says. If you really BLAST the sound, it becomes much clearer who's voice it is and where from where it's coming. And, if you listen closely you might notice that Ennis is minutely vocalizing during the "give em hell line"

Howdy, all--

I am 99.9% sure that it is Jack that says "Give 'em hell". I first heard this line myself on the DVD.

I never heard that line til I read about its existence last week, or whenever, now I hear it evertime, theater or DVD.

I just watched/listened to that little bit with my eyes opened and closed, and actually, I'm not sure who says it.  It does sound sort of gravelly and deep.  It's kind of a nutty line - or have I just not figured out its true meaning?

Don't know the answer, but I want to thank you Jenny for the insight about Ennis's reason for getting so drunk in the first place... hadn't thought of that.

Last time I watched it, I heard it clearly.  And I'm certain it was Jack because it comes too quickly after Ennis says his "Shit... gotta get back up to them sheep" line for it to said by him.

And again, Sarah, I'm reminded of my favorite Dorothy Parker line:

I like a good martini.  One or two at most.
After three, I'm under the table.  After four, I'm under my host.

besides...it sounds like.. Jack's voice! It's also the kind of thing Jack, rather than Ennis, would say-=-Ennis seldom says anything lightly..that's a throw-away line.

'scuse me, but edenbarby's tagline is SO great: "objects in the rear-view mirror may appear closer than they really are"

Almost as good as littledarlin's: "we can hug on Novermber, caress and nice oak."

"scuse me, but edenbarby's tagline is SO great: "objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are"

Why, thank ya very kindly, Julie.  That's from a song on the "Meatloaf II: Back Into Hell" album of the same title.  His lyricist, Jim Steinman, writes some really beautiful stuff.  This whole song is sheer poetry - it's all about looking back on your life with regret, and that's the refrain.  Heard it again about a week ago and couldn't believe I'd forgotten how perfect it'd be for a tagline here.  Part of it is about a childhood with an abusive father, and part of it is about the angelic girl who saved him from drowning in the misery of it, whose name, interestingly enough, is Julie.

Aw, hell, here's the whole thing for your reading pleasure.  Eerie, ain't it?  You should hear the melody.

The skies were pure and the fields were green
And the sun was brighter than it’s ever been
When I grew up with my best friend Kenny
We were close as any brothers that you ever knew
It was always summer and the future called
We were ready for adventures and we wanted them all
And there was so much left to dream and so much time to make it real

But I can still recall the sting of all the tears when he was gone
They said he crashed and burned
I know I’ll never learn why any boy should die so young
We were racing, we were soldiers of fortune
We got in trouble but we sure got around
There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark
I think he’s right behind me now and he’s gaining ground

But it was long ago and it was far away, oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

And when the sun descended and the night arose
I heard my father cursing everyone he knows
He was dangerous and drunk and defeated
And corroded by failure and envy and hate
There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze
Nowhere to hide and no leaves on the trees
And my father’s eyes were blank as he hit me again and again and again
I know I still believe he’d never let me leave, I had to run away alone
So many threats and fears, so many wasted years before my life became
My own
And though the nightmares should be over
Some of the terrors are still intact
I’ll hear that ugly coarse and violent voice
And then he grabs me from behind and then he pulls me back

But it was long ago and it was far away, oh God, it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear-view mirror may appear closer than they are.

There was a beauty living on the edge of town
And she always put the top up and the hammer down
And she taught me everything I’ll ever know
About the mystery and the muscle of love
The stars would glimmer and the moon would glow
I’m in the back seat with my Julie like a Romeo
And the signs along the highway all said, Caution! Kids at play!

Those were the rites of spring and we did everything
There was salvation every night
We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn
But everything we tried was right
She used her body just like a bandage
She used my body just like a wound
I’ll probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now
Just like an angel rising up from a tomb

And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

~ Jim Steinman

Ya know what, EB: we're ALL wrong--what it says on the RV mirror of most cars isw: objects may be closer than they appear"! Which don't fit, but it sure is the truth, and WHY DO THEY MAKE RV MIRROS THAT WAY?

Yes, they really do say it the other way around.  But that's not nearly as poetic.   ;)

Humph... as a confessed Gyllenhaalic and devotee of all thing Brokeback, I'm tellin you now, its Jack who says "give em hell". Its Jake Gyllenhaal's voice saying that line - I have listening about 8 times in a row up loud with my headphones on. Its Jake... oops, Jack.  :-*  ::)

Just listened to it again last night (on my 6th DVD--still no good) and '4 nights in 20 years" (Youtube)_--and Jack INTERRUPTS Ennis very slightly to say it--in other words, for a split second, both voices are heard at the same time. No way could it be Ennis.
