I absolutely LOVE the name Jack, and Joshua too. I decided the other day I want to name my first son Joshua, I just think it's great. I like Chloe and Charlotte too, I must be common. :P
I saw you were sick and tired of my wrong turns.
If you only knew the way I feel,
I'd really love to tell you,
But I could never seem to say
The things I needed to.
On a day like today
No other words would do.

What? No Jake on the list?! And, c'mon, parents, we need to get more Ennises in this world.

I'll never be blessed with children, but I am toying with the idea of getting a couple of little dogs when I retire. Guess what their names will be?  ;D

I love this line! It was the direct inspiration for my very first "Brokeback" haiku, which I composed back in March (seems so long ago now):

Little dog in coat
Gray-white sheep seeking mountain
Blue boy seeking love.

Thank you kindly, Lee! I thought I had copied this one into our 'Brokeback Haiku' thread, but I couldn't find it there. I did manage to transfer it onto teamtremblay, which probably no one ever visits anymore. At any rate, this very first "Brokeback"-inflected poem of mine is now here at BetterMost as well.

Sweet...very sweet. Thank you for posting. I'm not sure why, but that line in the original about Jack loving a little dog always brings me undone, every time I read it. Most little boys love dogs. Certainly, when I was a little boy, my dog was my best friend. I interpret this as saying that Jack is still a kid (an innocent) at heart. Pure of heart.

In the short story, both Ennis and Jack are described in 1963 as being "not yet twenty", suggesting that they are nineteen about to turn twenty. They're still teenagers--little more than boys, arguably, though prematurely burdened with hard and gritty men's work, and about to be thrust into an explosively complex world of adult emotion and choices. Their youth adds to the poignancy of their dilemma.

Jack shows an amazing capacity to love, and an abiding hunger to be loved. The wonderful image of the little dog in his coat is just one detail suggesting the generosity of his heart.
