Sweet...very sweet. Thank you for posting. I'm not sure why, but that line in the original about Jack loving a little dog always brings me undone, every time I read it. Most little boys love dogs. Certainly, when I was a little boy, my dog was my best friend. I interpret this as saying that Jack is still a kid (an innocent) at heart. Pure of heart.
Kerry, I got to thinking recently, in light of your comment here of how the detail of the little dog highlights Jack's childlike, even innocent nature, of another detail that seems pertinent in this regard. Jack proudly showing off his eagle feather to Ennis in the bar also seems like a very boyish gesture, and further delineates Jack's insouciant charm. The bar scene in the original story seems more cheerful and optimistic (despite the story of the ligtning-struck sheep) than the film's version of this moment, which foreshadows the melancholy tone that will dominate the rest of the narrative.

Probably the way Jack appreciated his Mama keeping his room the way it was when he was a child, complete with school desk an baby booties, is likely another example of this aspect of Jack's personality.

I have a friend who had a grandson born just a year ago and he was named Jack.

In the US, Jack was #6 on the popularity list. Aiden was first for boys, and Emma #1 for girls.
