Apologies to the person who started this way back when for highjacking your idea, but I just had to post this. I saw a cowboyish looking person walking down the street today and my heart lept when he . . . spit!!

Note to self: come and enjoy Front-rangers post when you have more time!

Seriously ranger I have millions, one actually including a concussion and a bag of peas, but more about that tomorrow.

I'm chuckling right now, Front-Ranger, because I had a similar experience just yesterday! I work for the mail and supplies unit for a university library, and part of my job is to greet the folks who make deliveries at our loading dock. We get a UPS shipment every day (well, Mondays through Fridays), and our regular UPS delivery guy, K.J., showed up as usual yesterday, and got to chatting while I accepted his deliveries. While talking, he spat three times to the side, and I couldn't see this without thinking of our beloved Wyoming cowboys...I never thought I would find spitting and swearing so endearing!

You know you're a Brokaholic when..

- You go through 77 pages of the NC-17 thread in one sitting!  :o
- Your addiction to cowboy boots has reached a fever pitch, and you were out yesterday trying on cowboy hats!
- Your friends will murder you if you ever attempt to bring up these two words ever again: Brokeback mountain!

You'll only date a guy if he's seen Brokeback Mountain (I see it as a mark of a true man).
I've learnt that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in!

Ahh Now I have time back to the peas and concussion story.

*When you have a concussion and instead of the normal how many fingers am I holding up you get asked to quote lines and you get them word perfect and still fall over.

*When you ask for beans instead of frozen peas to cool the swelling in your head

*When you wait 6 hours in the pouring rain, in Leicester just to see a glimpse of the cast

* When you ask your friend who is on holiday to look for Brokeback mags while she is over there

*When you have too many BBM articles that you have to have a special place for them

*When you look at roses, apples, cherries and binoculars differently

*When you get a bottle thrown at your head for mentioning the DVD release for the 345th time that day.

I will think of more, I promise I have millions.

:) when you see a big semi with the name "Ennis" on the side and you immediately think of Ennis Del Mar and start reliving parts of the movie all over again.........

(i saw this yesterday on the way to work - the trailer was silver and had the single name Ennis and I think Omaha, NE under it - no other writing or pictures or anything on the sides - so I have no idea if it is a transport company or what?)

I'd be willing to bet Ennis and Jack knew some John Denver songs by heart.

When you rent a car and drive 400 miles to see the Aero screening when you don't already have a ticket and have no way of knowing if you're going to get in or not.

One of the best risks I ever took.  Shook Gustavo's hand.

When you grow so frustrated by how far behind you are on the Tremblay board at BetterMost that you devote an entire day to getting caught up.  There ain't never enough time.  Never enough.

...when my sister and I had lunch at a cafeteria this past weekend, I requested beans in honor of Jack and Ennis.

...I'm considering growing a 'pornstache' in Jack's honor.

...I want to make the rest of my life a memorial to Ennis and Jack and what their story represents...

...that includes being a braver person, a more loving person in general, one willing to take more risks and seize more opportunities as they present themselves before me.

...I'm finding myself using 'hmmmm' a lot in my vocabulary.

.I never thought I would find spitting and swearing so endearing!

As a former English major, I never thought I'd find bad grammar so endearing! I would actually try to sneak an occasional "we was" or "them days" into my own conversation if it didn't sound so ridiculous coming from my mouth (rather than cute, when they say it).

When you start listening to John Denver music on the principle that a lot of his songs have the word "cowboy" in them.

Or start frequently humming the old Allman Brothers song "Sweet Melissa" -- which I hadn't thought twice about since the '70s and never really was particularly fond of -- because Ennis plays it on the jukebox on his date with Cassie (the lyrics describe his relationship with Jack).

- You begin to find sheep exciting.

- You read a flyer advertising a small-time rodeo and wonder if Jack's going to be there.

- Wyoming and Texas license plates catch your eye. Especially parked at trailheads.

- When your three-year-old has a tantrum about the yogurt that spilled on the floor, you get the urge to tell him "if you can't fix it, you gotta stand it." But you don't, because you'd rather he grew up to be somebody who fixes things he can't stand.
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

When I'm really enjoying a meal, I go "hmmmm..." just like I did at brekky this morning. I indoctrinated a friend into the ways of BBM last night and she got the joke and killed herself laughing. Then said "no more beans".  Unfortunately this friend lives in Melbourne (loooong way from here) and I hardly see her.  :(

When you dress your son in jeans, a white undershirt and chambray shirt (tucked in, black belt), actually ponder which of his shoes look the most like cowboy boots and wonder why on earth he doesn't own a black cowboy hat yet.  I took a photo of him, will post it for your viewing pleasure if you like.. He ain't exactly Jack Nasty but i was so proud..  and then felt horribly guilty and disgusting, like those parents who unload their fantasies and dreams onto their kids and expect to live through them.  My mum saw this outfit and forbid me to let Will leave the house wearing it... lol... (I DID change him, but he looked so cute..)

When you meet a new parent in your classroom and the conversation goes as follows:

Me: Hello, I'm Sheyne. Miss M to the kids... *chuckle*
Parent: I'm Judy.

And you consider saying "Your folks just stop at Judy?"

Hmm? What have I done lately as an expression of my blatant obsession with this movie?

*Still working with Jenny to develop my T-shirt, coming soon to a doorstep near me

*I watched Rodeo on ESPN. No joke. I was flipping through the Tivo guide, saw 'Rodeo' listed, and actually watched it (granted, in the middle of it, I start posting on IMDB on Brokeback's boards). I actually liked the rodeo just because it reminded me of our dearly beloved Jack and Ennis; however -- and laugh all you want, I have a sense of humor -- the baby cows are treated rather cruelly, which I object to.

*I literally cannot handle playing the CD anymore because it brings me down.

*I stole two of those little DVD covers (have no idea what the hell they're called) from Blockbuster. (The cardboard ones that have the DVD cover art on them.) One of them is going in my Brokeback scrapbook; the other will be on my wall next to all of my other Brokeback pictures.
If you'd just realize what I just realized then we'd be perfect for each other and we'd never have to wonder if we missed out on each other now

I didn't know you did that. Wow! I remember there were a several people who showed up without tickets, standing around waiting. Actually there were more than several, but then the theater manager came out and told them there wouldn't be any extra tickets and most of them left. but then as they were letting people in, I heard that some of them were actually able to get in. I'm glad you were one of them. I even remember Sarah and Jason talking to someone who came down from SF. That wasn't you was it?

When you've incorporated BBM slang into your daily English.

WHen your watching the rodeo on ESPN, checking out the cowboys, wondering if one of them is a "Jack Twist."

When you don't wanta go see any movies because a new standard has been set. Few films ever deliver at that level. Now going to a film seems more like going out to Burger King for dinner.

LOL Karl, you make me laugh! Especially the last one I was sat here watching the Little Mermaid last night and I was just sat here with my arms crossed looking all grumpy and my sister was like, "What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you so grumpy?" I shoffled my feet on the floor and mumbled, "Not as good as Brokeback". She did not believe what I had said cause when I was little it was one of my favourite films and I would never ever bad mouthed it. ::)

I have a few more for the list:
* when your moblie knows how to spell Brokeback Mountain and BBM cause you have written it so many times and it now is in your moblie's predictive text memory.
*When you mumble your family say,"Have you been taking elocution lessons from Ennis again?"
*You boo when you see Randy Quaid movies!

Hey Becks.  Did you know that the Little Mermaid was written by HCA as a gay story?  The "Land People" represented homosexuality, and Ariel was a closet.  Ursula was the underground go between (thus the tranny characterisation in the film), and the voice symbolised virginity.  I believe that Hans made Ariel female to give more license to campness without being obvious.

True story.., learned all that at Uni no less!

Perhaps that will help you enjoy the film more next time.  It worked for me.

I'm not sure I follow all that, Ray. I can see the relation of the vioce to virginity, and thus the story becomes a "cast from the Garden of Eden" fable. But to understand the rest I will have to reread the original HCA story. There was a great book called "Women Who Run with the Wolves" which reexamined classic stories and myths from the viewpoint of women's archtypes. I wish there were such a book for homosexuality too. Perhaps there is...anybody know of one?

To add another point on the original theme of this thread, you know you're a Brokeholic when somebody's going to Casper for a business trip, and you ask them to bring you back a roughneck! Course, they think you're talking about sun block...

Wow I never knew that, but I can see how it would work...All I really like are the songs. ::) But it is good to know. I have also watched TLM since I was a teenager and noticed that the priest "Moves"(As David would say...Aww I miss him! :'() while conducting the ceremony between Ursula and Eric. :o But whilst I was searching you tube I found these interesting videos while searching through all of the Japanese versions. You my find the last offensive, I must warn you, but I found it bloody funny, which probably shows how sick my sense of humour is:

Here you go Ray, a song from your favourtie Tranny characterisation(it becomes a completely different song once you know about the story):

This is what the real one looks like(in case you didn't know and to compare):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcCjjEeEb3Y

This is the funny, but could be offensive, version. Lets just say The little mermaid pines for...uh... the full human experience(This one kinda blows your theory out of the water! Ba doom doom tisch!):

Enjoy!

This is one of my greatest interests, analysing folk and fairytales, and this book is on my to read list cos someone I know told me it was very good. I just finished the Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood, which was very interesting (Yes Bex, here goes me with my LRRH obsession again).

You gotta TRANSLATE into Engish:

At the bank yesterday, the teller assked me, "You DO want this printed out for your records, don't you, Mrs. Vognar?"

Well, obvioiusly, the logical answer to this is "Do I look like I can afford a fuckion' ropin' horse?"

I had to think for a few minutes befroe I came up with  "Do I look like the kind of person who keeps records?"

he laughed, and said "You're a very funny girl, Julie." God, if her knew HOW funny...

Other than the fact that I use the "F" word only for acts of sexual intercourse and the "S" word for defecation and manure, most of the vocabulary words and phrases used in the book and the movie are just common words and phrases known to me or even used by me.

My father grew up in the OLD West side of Oklahoma in what was known as the Cherokee Strip before Statehood and his father had been one of the Boomers in the 1889 Land Rush there. (A "Sooner" was a person who staked out his 160 acre homestead claim ahead of time and that was an illegal act. Boomers were not law breakers.)

Dad went to be with the LORD in Feb. 1994; but, I think he would have understood many of the expressions Annie Proulx used in her story. He stopped cussin' in the late 1930s; but, he did quote people sometimes when he wanted to prove a point and a cuss word was in the quote.

I have Cowboy Slang book that has the "teeth, popcorn, jug" expression in it under the "Homely" phrase section.

If I want people to think I am attempting to talk like a red-neck (includes so-called cowboy slang), I use the rinkworks.com's "Dialectizer's redneck program.

Here's a copy of what I wrote "Dialectized:"

:D  I love this thread  :D

Well, I went out and bought a new TV in honor of purchasing this DVD.  It was the logical thing to do.

I've been eating beans a lot more than I normally would.

I start lots and lots of sentences with "Tell you what..."  I feel that this is subtle enough not to draw too much attention to myself.  But, sometimes it just comes out without me thinking about it now too... like second nature.

I feel guilty when I walk by BBM display stands at stores like Barnes and Noble when I don't buy anything.  I mean, I have the DVD, soundtrack and book already... but still I feel wrong just walking by.

I've been listening to the soundtrack almost non-stop for weeks and weeks, and I really don't like country music. ??? ::) :D

I'm with you, Amanda. Methinks they'll have another book, expanded soundtrack, and special DVD coming out soon for us deprived folks if those marketing folks are smart.

Since there are no more BBM things to be had, I've been shopping for campgear and Western wear lately. I was so envious of the New Yorkers that got together that, tell you what, I made a pilgrimage to Rockmount yesterday. That's where the Western shirts and other gear came from that the cast wore. It was a lot of fun. I took pics which I'll have on the site in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

I bought a beautiful navy with white stripes shirt with diamond pearl snaps. It is just the perfect thing to spiff up the navy banker's suit that I have to wear occasionally when clients are coming into the office. I am fortunate enuf to live in Denver so I can indulge my Western wear fantasy as often as I like without people looking at me like they all know. Altho occasionally, someone will say, "Uh, Lee, the stock show is over, you can go back to wearing your regular clothes." These ARE my regular clothes anymore...!

Oh, I already have Western style clothing like that in the movie. I never really started to have complete Western, aka  "cowdrag," outfits until after I left the closet and started going to the Rawhide C&W Club in North Hollywood, CA in 1984. Ed made sure that I had a real cowboy straw hat to wear and we went to a Western store down in Hollywood so that he could buy me one. The place was going out of business and the hat we found was sold at a cheap price. I still have that hat. And . . . it's not in a closet. It's on a shelf in the bedroom.

I actually have had no changes in the way that I talk or the way that I dress in public after seeing Brokeback Mountain on the wide screen at the Multiplex Theater.

Which makes believe that Bettermost is more than just a fan site.  What we have built here is am internet community of diverse people, brought together by this story, but we have and continue to grow past that.  Ennis and Jacks (I apologize to the fanfic authors we have here) story is over, but ours, both collectively and as individuals continues.  We each go on to face new joys, sorrows and concerns, and my hope is that Bettermost can be a place where we can safely share all those stages in our lives...as people who know the importance of loving and caring for each other and for those who are still struggling with how they fit into this world.

I agree, Scott, Kelda and Meryl. I work out of my home, so I'm alone all day, so you guys are like the people I'd chat with around the water cooler or in the break room. (And, just as when I worked in an office, I have been known to extend that chat a little too long when I really should be working  ...  ::).)

Often, the talk is of BBM because it's something we all have in common, and it's fun to work Brokieisms into the conversation because people here are the only people in the world who instantly understand them. And I also like talking about other topics -- movies, books, recipes, whatever -- with people I know I have at least one huge thing in common with, so probably a bunch of smaller things, as well.

BTW, anybody see "My Name is Earl" last week? Earl got involved with a guy who had just died, and apparently had no friends or family. Earl felt sorry for the guy, so he invited a bunch of his own friends to a "funeral," but it was a disaster because nobody knew or cared about the guy (stay with me, I do have a point...). Then Earl stumbled upon the dead guy's computer and discovered that he was active on all kinds of message boards and chat rooms on a variety of topics (not BBM, sadly) and actually had lots and lots of friends -- online. So Earl emailed THOSE people, held another funeral, and a big crowd showed up for it.  :)

Thanks, Jeff! You and I have discussed Earl before, so I thought you might have seen it, too.  :)

BTW, it was an uncomfortable moment that evening, with the whole family gathered around the TV. I was just waiting for my kids to start teasing me about my own semi-surreptitious online life (they find my online activity questionable, at best ;D). But, amazingly, they passed up the opportunity. From which I can only conclude that online friendships are becoming normalized and accepted, even among skeptics like my sons.

And I thought that Earl episode treated it quite respectfully, when they might as easily have portrayed message-board participants as weird losers who can't make friends in real life. The dead guy was articulate and attractive and knowledgable online (seen in flashbacks), and the friends who came to his funeral seemed like nice, normal, caring friends.

BTW, now that the subject is up, Earl is far LESS progressive in its portrayal of gay characters. That's probably the thing I find most annoying about the show. What do you think, Jeff?

Yeah, I think the glee I get out of Brokieisms... and the fun of knowing that this is where I can come to find people who understand (and won't judge this perhaps peculiar obsession with one film/ story) are on-going symptoms of Brokaholism.  I'm beginning to sense that the addicition to BetterMost has taken on a life of it's own and is somewhat different from the basic love of BBM.  They're forever tied together.  But, the joy in feeling like part of a great community of friends (who can talk about things other than BBM) is it's own thing.  I'm just repeating what's been said above I think.  But, it feels very true to me.

Did I tell you all how glad I am to find my way here.  As I think Edna put it I was slow straggling up the mountain, and I am so glad you are all here as I am going through what you all did months ago.  I never was on a boad before, but I couldn't believe that this place exists, with so many great people.

In real life I don't really have anyone that I could go talk to about BBM, and its hit me so hard and made me realize so many aspects of my life I want to change.

It is a great community of open minded, thinking, and friendly people and I think it should go on and become even more even beyond BBM and like Phillip said in his beautiful letter, a place where people could find ways help them to change.

Oh yeah, I still have not stopped thinking about BBM since I saw it, and I know I willl still be thinking about it for a long while,

And I finally bought a divd player and three different copies of it  so I think I am already a brokaholic

Very well articulated, Amanda.  8)

BTW, now that the subject is up, Earl is far LESS progressive in its portrayal of gay characters. That's probably the thing I find most annoying about the show. What do you think, Jeff?

It doesn't bother me, because those gay characters are seen through the eyes of a character, Earl, who is obviously a Neanderthal. (Oh, dear, I've just stereotyped cave men.  ;D )

But don't forget, in the debut episode, even the Neanderthal Earl actually took Kenny the Gay Guy to a gay bar--after he got over his initial panic reaction, of course. And Earl was quite comfortable in that bar once Kenny told him how much he, Earl, had done for him, Kenny.

I wish I had seen that episode.  It's kind of a breakthrough for the portrayal of internet users, isn't it?

Only to a limit. The friend from India had to break away from her reminiscences to answer a Tech Services call.   ;D

I guess ... It made me cringe a little. But (to paraphrase my favorite line by Gene Hackman in "The Royal Tennenbaums") what doesn't these days?  ;D

Well, nice that it made you cringe, I guess. Maybe a lot is owed to Jason Lee's wide-eyed delivery of his lines. The creators of the show send up so many stereotypes (e.g., in the funeral episode, the woman in India is working at a computer "Help desk"/tech services position) that I find I can't take any of it seriously.

Real case in point: The show is set in some fictitious "Camden County," but I can't help but believe that's a joky reference to the city and county in New Jersey just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia!

Yes, it's hard to get offended by Earl himself. He's supposed to be a redneck, so it's realistic to show him as homophobic, and then nice when he can set his prejudices aside. Plus, Jason Lee makes him so cute and funny and goofy and naive and well-meaning that you can't really be offended by him.

I was thinking more of the way the characters are portrayed: Kenny, who is dorky and feeble, and then that guy on the bus-stop bench a couple of weeks ago who, due to a misunderstanding, goes off for a quick tryst in the park with Randy. Compare those to the way Darnell is portrayed. He's funny and has his own quirks, but they don't evoke creaky stereotypes about black people. I can't remember where you stood on the "SNL gay cowboys in the audience" debate, Jeff, but this is sort of the same situation.

Here's something I read recently in Slate that made me think of that SNL debate and that I thought expressed the issue really well. Laura Kipnis is writing about stereotypes in a particular book -- in this case, stereotypes about behavior of straight women and men. But the principle she describes is exactly what we SNL-segment opponents were talking about.

Quote
If there's humor to be milked from the (tragically, all too common) situation of loving someone who doesn't love you back, or from the variety of self-abnegating female behavior on display here, let's call it the humor of painful recognition. The comedy hinges on a willingness to recognize the element of truth in the parody. But the humor of painful recognition is also an inherently conservative social form, especially when it comes to conventional gender behaviors, because it just further hardens such behaviors into "the way things are." The laughter depends not only on our recognizing the world as it supposedly is, but on our leaving it that way; it questions nothing. Consider, by contrast, someone like Sarah Silverman, whose scabrous humor, delivered in that faux-naive girly voice, leaves exactly nothing the same. When Silverman takes on female abjection—most famously, "I was raped by my doctor. Which is such a poignant experience for a Jewish girl"—the clichés are demolished, not upheld; the world as it was is turned on its ear. The laughter isn't from painful recognition, it's the shock and pleasure of smashing conventions instead of toadying to them.

I didn't find the rest of the piece all that interesting, frankly (though I usually like Laura Kipnis). But for the record, you can read the whole article here:

Well, I don't watch SNL--never have, and didn't even for Jake (I think it's healthier emotionally for me to go out on a Saturday night and hang out with my buddies than to sit at home--alone--watching late night television)--so I know nothing about this "SNL gay cowboys in the audience debate" of which you speak, and therefore have no position. Sorry!

That excerpt from Laura Kipnis is interesting. I like that phrase, "the humor of painful recognition." However, I barely know who Sarah Silverman is--I think I read something about her somewhere, so I assume she's a raunchy female comic--but I don't get Kipnis's take that Silverman's joke about being raped by her doctor is a poignant experience for a Jewish girl "demolishes" rather than "upholds" cliches. I would think the joke is funny precisely because of the stereotype or cliche that "all Jewish mothers want their daughters to marry doctors." I can see that the joke turns the cliche on its head, but I don't see that it demolishes (that is, destroys) it--unless by "demolishes" Kipnis means what I'm calling "turning it on its head."

(Edit: Just to note that I'm leaving work early this afternoon, 3:30 EST, to go visit my father for the weekend, and I'll be out of computer touch till I return home Sunday evening, so if I drop out of the conversation, that's why. ~J.W.)

Good point. Well, there were some gay cowboys in the audience for Jake's appearance -- it was the only Brokeback reference -- and they were pretty cliched, so there was a debate going on here over whether they were harmless humor or unfunny reinforcement of stereotypes.

I know, I agree, it's ambiguous, and I think that example is probably the weakest part of that excerpt. But I guess what she's saying is that Sarah Silverman makes the stereotype SO absurd as to demolish it -- a lot of Sarah Silverman's humor is like that; she plays on stereotypes and prejudices to an extreme that makes them completely ludicrous rather than just a reinforcement of what we already believe (and she's hilarious, BTW). The comic I most associate with the other kind of joke -- the stereotype-reinforcing kind -- is Jay Leno (perhaps unfairly, because there are lots of comedians who do this, and I could even be wrong because I very rarely watch Leno). That is, men are beer-guzzling domestically challenged slobs who won't ask directions and hog the remote, women are long-suffering, neat-freak housefraus who fret that every item of clothing makes their butt look fat, "Brokeback Mountain" is ... well, you can imagine. The stereotypes are boring and cliched and, as Kipnis says, they uphold the status quo. Like, as you laugh you're supposed to be shrugging, "Yeah, men are lazy bums, but whattya gonna do?" I get email spam with those kinds of jokes, and I often delete them before I even finish reading them.

Whew! OK, there's my soapbox speech du jour.

So it sounds like they weren't real gay cowboys, just guys dressed like cowboys and acting queeny?  :P

OK, I can see that might be what Kipnis means. I'm still not sure I agree with it, but I see that could be what she means.

Thanks, Katherine!

Yes. Sorry if that wasn't clear; they were characters planted in the audience. And one point made in the debate here was that not only did the joke reinforce stereotypes, but that it relied on them even to let viewers know what the joke was. If they just looked like regular guys, the SNL thinking seemed to be, then how would anybody know they were gay?[/quote]

I was pretty sure that's what you meant, just thought it safer to be explicit.  ;)

I guess I'm finding myself wondering whether any humor based on a stereotype ever really destroys that stereotype, or just ends up reinforcing it?  :-\  ??? Or maybe it only works when a character who clearly believes in the stereotype is made to look like a fool, like Archie Bunker?

BINGO.  That character and the time they parodied that homophobic cowboy on The Daily Show last year are the only two instances I can think of off the top of my head that served to try to destroy (or at least debilitate) the sterotypes.  Boy, did they make the latter look like a fool, too.  I'm sorry I didn't TiVo that and save it for posterity.  It was some truly funny business.  And better than anything anyone currently at SNL could write in their wildest dreams.

Might a make a suggestion that the direction this thread has gone seems to be quite far away from it's intent.

This is a great discussion about subliminal and insidious discrimination.  Perhaps "Safe Haven" would be a good place for it.

Well, allow me to help push this hijacked train back on track.

You know you're a Brokaholic when... you still replay at least one scene in your mind just about every morning when you first wake up.  (When I'm feeling particularly randy, it's both tent scenes *and* the reunion.  But sometimes it's the "Hell, that's the most I spoke in a year" or Motel Siesta scene.)

I think I saw that one, Barb! Was it an older guy, maybe 70ish, who objected to a gay rodeo? And the Daily Show reporter was playing along, and ridiculing the gay rodeoer for only being able to stay on the bull for 8 seconds, and then (long pause) the old guy had to grudgingly admit that was pretty good?

Which brings us back to the larger question: Why is it the Daily Show can be funny for an entire half hour, four days a week, while SNL can't manage to be funny for even ONE half hour, ONCE a week?

I guess I'm finding myself wondering whether any humor based on a stereotype ever really destroys that stereotype, or just ends up reinforcing it?  :-\  ??? Or maybe it only works when a character who clearly believes in the stereotype is made to look like a fool, like Archie Bunker?

Well, Sarah Silverman's comic persona is sort of an edgier, 21st-century version of Archie Bunker. As is the character of Michael on The Office. (And I suppose Borat? I haven't seen that movie.) Maybe they don't demolish stereotypes, but they sure make them look foolish.

But the OTHER kind, the stereotype reinforcing kind, does something else I was thinking about this morning. (While riding my stationary bike! You're not the only one who comes up with good ideas while away from the computer, Jeff!  ;D) I watch both "My Name is Earl" and "The Office" with my sons, who are 10 and 12. When the stereotype-reinforcing gay characters on Earl come on, one thing that makes me uncomfortable is the worry that my sons will get the idea that that's what being gay is. Whereas in episodes of The Office dealing with gayness and homophobia, the gay coworker Oscar is normal and sensible, whereas Michael, with his font of ridiculous prejudices and stereotypes, is the one who looks silly and wrong. The stereotypER is the object of humor rather than the stereotypEE.

You can imagine which message I'd rather see my sponge-like sons absorbing, which character I'd rather see them laughing at. Neither show changed MY views, and perhaps neither would change the views of a committed bigot. But for a 10-year-old, still figuring out how this stuff goes, it could make a difference.

UPDATE: Oops, sorry Scott, your post came in while I was writing this, so I'll just post it and shut up.

Let's see, um ... you know you're a Brokeaholic when you can spend days debating back and forth about the political effects of gay characters on sitcoms? Well, no, I guess one doesn't NECESSARILY lead to the other ...  ::)

...when you consider buying the full screen version of a movie just because it's on the $13 shelf, and then consider going to your message board and asking if anyone else is looking for the full screen version at that price.

...and when you decide to wait until the price drops to the $9 shelf, more because of the stupid "Winner of 3 Academy Awards" thing on the cover than because you already own the widescreen version.

(Also, when your child sees the cover and says "Mommy, look, that's Jack!")

Mel that's priceless!

When you excitedly point out Childress to your other half and when he asks What's in Childress you say, "Jack lives there!" And then you have to spend the entire drive thru the Texas panhandle correcting all his misconceptions: No, Jack wasn't born there, he was born in Wyoming. He moved there after Brokeback and got married. No, he married a woman and had a son. No, he didn't have the son, his wife did, dummy. How did he do that? Same way YOU did. Etc. Etc.

Another incident, tonight.

I answered the phone and heard a strange man's voice (saying "how're you doin, darlin" or something like that). I told him that I thought he had the wrong number, and then he asked to speak to Carl.

And my first reaction was...

...what? Carl? Carl's gay too? How does Cassie keep dating gay men?

(Then I returned to my senses, told the man that he had the wrong number, and hung up the phone.)

(Though I supposed I'm not a true brokaholic unless I also answer the phone with "Who? Who is this?")

(Edit -- this might not make sense if you didn't know my first reaction to being called "darlin" on the phone. People don't call me "darlin." I'm from northern New England, and my people aren't big on endearments. So my first reaction was that either this guy thought I was his wife, or that this was a harassing phone call and I needed to end it ASAP. And then suddenly, it was mistaken because the guy really wanted to talk to Carl...)

I was watching a movie preview the other day, and some woman almost got hit by a car.  Instantly, I thought "Hey asshole, watch where you're goin'!"  ::)

Aww, that's so cute!  :D

The answer was EAP.  You can't tell this Brokie that it was referring to Edgar Allan Poe.

I believe Meryl is referring to the goddess herself:  E. Annie Proulx.

:)  sorry, I never knew she had a E (first name) or went by anything other than Annie Proulx, or if I did, it was temporarily lost in the vast labyrinth of my somewhat still-working brain :D

The E stands for Edna.

From Wikipedia:

Edna Annie Proulx (pronounced /pru:/) (born August 22, 1935) is an American journalist and author. Her second novel, The Shipping News (1993), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for fiction in 1994. Her short story "Brokeback Mountain" was adapted as an Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award-winning major motion picture released in 2005. Brokeback Mountain received massive critical acclaim and went on to be nominated for a leading eight Academy Awards, winning three of them. She won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for her first novel, Postcards. She has written most of her stories and books simply as Annie Proulx, but has also carried the name E. Annie Proulx.

I think she first published under the name E.A. Proulx to conceal the fact that she is a woman (writing about all that butch stuff, after all :)); later E. Annie Proulx; and now just Annie Proulx.

Twisting this topic on it's head.

I'm in need of consolation and support because I don't feel I am a broke-a-holic anymore.  Don't need to see the movie, read the book, disect, discuss, fantasize, cry over...am I sick?  :(

Aw, Scott, there there.

Perhaps you're an evolved Broke-aholic.  I can't help but notice that you are here at BetterMost quite often.  Nothing wrong with wanting to discuss other stuff that interests you with all the lovely people around here.

I think this was part of Phillip's vision anyway;  that we would move on from the story but remain a community.

I knew we have a thread for this! Thank you to the search function ;D.

Wow, this thread has long been dormant. Time to revive it :).

Last night, I saw "Knocked Up" on TV. There's a scene where Katherine Heigl's character and her love-interest have an argument in a bookstore/videostore. They stand in front of a shelf, arguing back and forth, yada, yada, then the guy leaves. Guess what movie we see in the shelf! Bingo! 8)

Even fours years into it, seeing the BBM cover in another movie made me ridiculously happy :D.

You've seen this deleted scene, right Chrissi? (It's not on YouTube, so I can't post the video itself.)

No, I hadn't seen that.

There are two BBM references in Knocked Up then (albeit it's disputable whether you count the deleted scene). One is the scene I described above (where she discussed with Seth Rogen, not the other guy who looks just alike) and then the one you linked.

Completely unrelated thought: Paul Rudd, who plays the BIL in Knocked Up, is hot! 8)
Drove me crazy for the whole movie that I knew I had seen the guy before, but didn't know where. He played Phoebe's BF in Friends.

I love Brokeback Mountain.  Most of my friends and family do not understand.  Thats why this forum means so much to me.

But you two know he was the leading man in the successful recent comedies Role Models and I Love You Man, right? Both were enjoyable.

.... when you recognize other freaks without a doubt ;D.

Friday night, my daughter and I went to an ice-hockey game. When we came to our seats, a pre-game show had already begun. Very unusual, normally there isn't anything before the game, except for music from the loud speakers. At first it didn't make much sense to me, there were people in Star Wars costumes marching on the ice, dramatic music, fire effects, light-sabers, yada-yada. Then the players came in, rushing through the phalanx of Star Wars figures.

And then it dawned on me: this isn't related to the team, any sponsors, the game or whatever. Those are Star Wars freaks, a private group, just like Trekkies or us Brokies. I knew it without a doubt. And sure enough, during the first break, one of those guys was interviewed. Yes, they're a group of fans, finding each other and communicating on the internet, meeting each other on Brokie gatherings conventions, etc.

My daughters eyes almost popped out when she heard that I was right.

Now, I have heard of "gaydar". Seems there is also something like a "freak-dar" ;).

LOL Chrissi, that's just great!   ;D

Maybe that's what we should do; dress up in cowboy outfits and march back and forth on the ice prior to hockey games?

The campfire may be a problem though.....
