He had come here to bid a fond farewell.  He would place the bouquet of small ribbon flowers, each made of six inches of white silk ribbon, on the grave.

But still Jack's death spread out before him like a wide, wide river.  No closure here. No closure.

"Shouldn't'a come, Jack.  Sorry, Jack.  Shouldn't'a come."

Feeling a hand on his shoulder, he turned to see only the rolling, welling plain.

"You did good, Ennis.  You did good."  A voice said from thin air.

It was a long time till he could see well enough through the tears to drive again.

"Maybe I should'a, then." he thought.

He decided there and then to get his horse and trailer and return to Brokeback.

Sitting on the log beside the fire, tent up and camp all arranged, he sensed Jack sit beside him.  He didn't look, he knew he wouldn't see anything there.

"Thanks for coming back here Ennis."

"I miss you Jack.  I miss you like hell."

"Don't be missin' me.  I'm not gone."

   "But I can't see you."

"Yes you can.  Just not like before."

"Not the same, Jack, not the same."

"Nothin's the same, Cowboy.  Nothing stays the same."

"Yeah, I s'pose.  I want to hold you.  I want you to hold me."

"I am holdin' you, Cowboy...  all this time, I've been holdin'."

   "Yeah?"

"Yeah...  You shouldn't drink so much Ennis.  That's takin' you away from your girls."

"Yeah, well, it just hurts so damn much."

"That's why I come.  I'm here.  I will be.  Just call out to me... and talk to me."

   "Not the same, Jack."

"We b'n through this, Cowboy, nothing stays the same."

   "Yeah."

"Tell you what.  Lets stay here for as long as you want and then we'll take this place with us."

   "Whut?"

"When you want to go, we'll take what we have always had here with us.  J'st you an' me.  Deal?"

   "Deal?"

"When we left before we left 'us' here...  We tried to get 'us' and did from time to time.  But now we can take 'us' with us, Cowboy.  We are always together now."

"I wish... I could just hold ya."

"Yeah, but y'know?  When you pass too, it'll be better than it ever was, Cowboy.  Better than it ever was."

   "Yeah?"

   "Oh yeah."

Very cute and funny Mainewriter .... and what's with the sausages?  They are the weirdest colour sausages I''ve ever seen!

They are a Maine "delicacy." I don't think they are sold in any other state in the US.

Lazy L Farm
Quanah, TX
June 2007

Jack took a handful of pistachio nuts and passed the bowl to Ennis, who absent-mindedly shelled them and popped them into his mouth. He looked down at the bowl and then smiled at Jack. “Remember when pistachios used ta be red?”

“Sure do. That was the only way ya could buy em.” .....

Lazy L J&E!!!  You've made my day, L!   :D  So funny - as soon as I saw "pistachio nuts" I thought of red fingers!  And, yes, your Maine "delicacy" looks. . . . interesting!  LOL!!

Outrider, that was lovely!  I hope to see more of you writing!

Thanks,
Marie

(Congrats, on 100 pages, drabblers.  Here's one,.... continuation of 'The Neighbor')

Holding On

(August 1985)
Ennis felt like he was hung over.  Even though he didn’t have much to drink, just not enough sleep.  He looked over at Tom, who was sitting beside him, outside the trailer.  Tom was calmly eating pistachio nuts, staring off into the distance.  The sun was setting, the night was still hot.  Ennis closed his eyes.

“You sleepin’?” Tom asked.

“Naw, just thinkin’” Ennis replied.

It was two days and nights since he went back to Tom.  Two days and nights of warm, strong hands and hot sparks.  Ennis opened his eyes.  The sky was ablaze.

“Thinkin’ of what?”  Tom asked  “You wanna know what I’m thinking of?”

Ennis looked at him, but didn’t reply.  He looked back at the glowing sky.

Tom laughed.  “You wanna go back inside?” he asked, with a glint in his eye.

Ennis looked back at him.  Two days and nights that almost made him forget.  But it made him remember more too.  Suddenly some music came floating towards them from one of the farthest trailers.   “Don’t stop believing, hold on to the feeling…”

Ennis suddenly gasped for breath.   It instantly came back to him, the last time he heard that song, on Jack’s tinny, crackling radio.  The one that could barely pick up a station, that he brought on the last few trips.  Ennis never knew why.

“So, ya comin’ back inside?”  Tom asked again.

Ennis didn’t answer, he looked back up at the sky.

Good morning all,

How about these prompts:

  • "The last 30 cents in my pocket."
  • "There's a whole wide world out there..."
  • "I've fallen and I can't get up."

The operator interrupted the conversation.  Jack said'' Ennis?''  There was a pause,'' you ok, cowboy?"  Ennis just lowered his voice,  ''thats the last thirty cents in my pocket Jack.  gotta go..''  ''Ennis,
Ennis.''  Huuuuuuuuummmmmn the line was dead.
