But when the words came out of his mouth of their own accord as he looked Jack's father in the eye ….. I’d be proud to….he recognized the essential truth of them at once.

He was damn proud to call Jack Twist his friend, and he always would be.

Thank you so much for illuminating another layer of that scene. Just beautiful.

Distance

The girls sat together on one end of the seesaw, ponytails flopping with the gentle up and down motion. Ennis smiled gently from the opposite end. Alma stood quietly in the doorway of the cramped laundry apartment admiring her little family. They were happy, she said to herself, although the image of the man in the red shirt was again on her mind like a rubber band snapping back against a red finger.

A breeze shifted slightly over the grass making it wave to the trees. Aguirre rode across the remains of a campsite, the ground still ashen. He was happy, he said to himself, although the the image of two boys was again on his mind, snapping back like a rubber band against a red finger.

Wow.
Pairing those two beautifully imagined scenes sets off such resonances.
on the mountain flying in the euphoric, bitter air

Keepsakes

He walked quietly into the dark house after cleaning up by the creek, wet shirt in hand, but when he went to hang it on the hook by the door he saw the fresh wound on his palm, a reminder of how firmly he'd grasped that tire iron.  No matter.  Just a little keepsake of the night.  They'd taken the old bird unawares, kept going until the message was delivered, a lesson he'd already taught his boys.

He'd bring them out to the irrigation ditch tomorrow.  There was one more lesson they needed and he'd make sure they heard it good.

Flight

A shirt, blood-soaked cuffs, crumpled upon the wooden chopping block. Sunshine had never filled him with such sorrow.
Ennis, skidding stones across the dribbling creek.
Jack slipped the shirt into his knapsack. And then he was standing outside a forlorn trailer, a scene in his mind as fresh as the snow that had come and gone on their lonely hillside. Watching a boy who didn't want to be watched. His invisible friend now forever etched into his waking thoughts.
Ennis turned around, smiling.
A lone bird swooped toward the creek, brushed the water and then swirled into the sky.

That just makes me ache.  What gorgeous prose.  Thanks, stonebiscuit.

So Far But Yet So Near

He didn't remember when he realized that not everyone could see distances so clearly. He knew he never had a problem looking at the blackboard like some other kids, and his daddy said his eyesight made him a good shot, and it didn't matter that looking at books gave him a headache 'cause he'd rather be outside with the horses anyway….

But ever since that day when he'd seen exactly what happened to guys like Earl… the bloody pulp, pieces of burned tomatoes, nose torn down….well, he knew now it wasn't a good thing to see so clearly after all.
