The Neighbor and The Journey by Cameron
« on: March 18, 2007, 07:13:36 pm »
Hi Everyone,

To the great Drabblers and followers of the Drabblefest, thank you all for the responses to my Drabble series about Ennis and his neighbor Tom.  It means so much to me. I hope you don't mind that I am posting this here.

I posted it all to LJ, so that I have it all together.  I have been thinking of expanding it somehow, I would love your thoughts about doing so, but for now I will keep it as a Drabble series.  It is fun that way.

I decided to just go ahead and post the link to the series on LJ here, and I will keep updating it.  If you haven't read any of it yet, I hope that you like it.

But please come join us at the Drabblefest.  There is so many wonderful writers here at BM!!!!   But I will keep adding it here after a few days, so it is all together too (keep hitting next on LJ).  The link:

Thank You,

Marl

Evenin'.

Just posted on the Drabblefest thread, that I hoped you would start your own thread...Well, you did!

No need to expand what you have, unless Ennis just insists on your filling in the missing months.  Your writing cuts to the chase, and flows.

I have always thought that Ennis had it in himself eventually to be with someone else, without forgetting Jack and their love.  Ennis finds himself opening up to Tom, and wonders why. Lots to explore there.  Tom has more to his story than he's let on; like, he just "knew", "had his way" of knowing, that he and Ennis were alike.  Want to have him tell more, since he and Ennis are involved now.

Thanks again for sharing this with us.  Looking forward to more.

Your message meant a lot too me.  I really do appreciate it.

I did add another part, that was not directly posted on the DrabbleFest

Here is the link that I did give there.

Hope to have more of Ennis and Tom real soon, either there or here.

Hey, Marl

SPOILER

This latest chapter is wonderful.  Ennis's desire, confusion, thoughts of Alma, Cassie and, of course, Jack - very well done.  These last sentences, though -

Ennis sat there for a long, long time, holding the postcard, staring at the picture of the mountain, hoping somehow that it would turn into the picture of Jack.

But there was no picture of Jack and no sky blue eyes looking directly into his soul.  There was no one softly whispering “it's alright, it’s alright” to him, no one whispering to him now at all.

-  are awesome.

Thanks,
Marie

Evenin',

Thanks for the email...mea maxima culpa on addressing the comments to TH!!!  :/  Promise I'll keep them separated from now on.

Read the latest installment, and also liked how you're developing the story.  Need to post the link here, in this thread, too.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I have been doing a little writing for the Dream Challenge over at BBMSlash.  It started off as one simple dream and ended up to be a short series.  I decided to post the links here.  This is all occuring before the last meeting at the lake.  It is slightly different for me, but still sort of different in general.  I hope that you might try it and I sure hope that you enjoy it if you do.

Hi,

Just in case anyone might be interested at all, I have sort of started an actual story called “The Journey”.  It is a kind of the sequel to “The Neighbor”, but it is different too.  But like most of what I write, it is sort of oblique, maybe that is the right word.  Here are the links so far:

The Journey: Part 1, http://aileb42.livejournal.com/14432.html.

The Journey: Part 2, http://aileb42.livejournal.com/14606.html.

The Journey: Part 3, http://aileb42.livejournal.com/14970.html

If you do read it, feel free to comment on LJ.  I really appreciate comments, no matter what.

Thank you.

Heya,

I just started reading the Journey last night and I'm very intrigued by it so far!  I've only read the first two chapters so far and I can't wait to get home from work so that I can read more!  Once I finish it I'll move on to your other stories.

Heya,

So, I'm up to part 6 in the Journey as of tonight.  And, I'm really loving it.  I love how the story has such a mysterious, fable-like quality... and your writing style really enhances this.  I really can't wait to read more... you have a very good way of creating suspense and curiosity.

I still haven't read The Neighbor... but I definitely will once I finish The Journey.  ;D

I'm up to part 13 right now in The Journey and I'm really loving it.  It's just such a unique and creative story!  I definitely haven't figured it all out yet (not even close) but, all the descriptions and mysterious elements of this story have a really magical feel to them.

Congrats to Cameron for finishing The Journey! 8)

http://aileb42.livejournal.com/28386.html

**Spoiler Question**
I want to ask about the function of Rob here in the story, now that we know how things turn out for Ennis and Jack.  Was Rob part of Jack trying to teach/show Ennis that Ennis really is gay?  That's how I interpreted him at the end... but, I just wanted to check in to be sure and to see what others thought.  I mean, was Ennis's affair with Rob part of the plan, or was Rob just supposed to accompany Ennis?  I love the twist about the eye color at the end.

SPOILER

Those are good questions, Amanda.  I had some of the same thoughts.  At first I looked at Rob as a sort of guide for Ennis's journey, but I was never really sure exactly what Rob knew, but he did seem to have some kind of "hold" over Ennis, which I guess is explained at the end with the change of eye color.  I'm surmising that when Jack held Rob's hand after he was beaten, he passed on his, I don't know, aura or something?  And that's why Ennis and Mrs. Twist had such a strong reaction to him - they could kind of "feel" Jack's presence in him?   This is just speculating on my part.

I'm unsure about Rob's affair with Ennis, too.  Ennis had already been having a long-term relationship with Tom, so whether Ennis said the words out loud or not, I think he already knew he was gay, he just wouldn't admit it out loud to anyone.  I'm not sure if the affair with Rob was part of a plan to finally get Ennis to admit it, or if Ennis was so overwhelmed by the feeling of Jack's presence in Rob that he couldn't resist him.   I wasn't sure if Ennis would have the affair with Rob if he really believed there was a chance Jack was still alive - but, again, I guess that's where the eye color thing comes in?  I did like how Rob's eyes changed back to green at the end, too!  I'll admit to being very surprised at the end - in a good way - I never actually believed Jack was still alive!

**Spoilers**

Heya,

Yes, I was also pleasantly surprised to find that Jack was still alive.  And, like you, I was thinking that Rob had somehow "morphed" into a Jack-like figure... or your idea that Jack's energy was transferred to Rob during the attack also was along the lines of what I was expecting.  I honestly was expecting some kind of ending where Ennis would end up with Rob and in a way that Ennis could accept and be comfortable with (though of course I'm much happier that it's Jack).

The thing that keeps me wondering... is if Ennis had any notion that Jack was alive (and he does at least have this faith... if not firm belief... following his early encounter with Jack on the mountain when he received Jack's package/notes)... why would he conduct an affair with another man?  I mean he was in a relationship with Tom, but I'm assuming that this was during a phase when he truly believed that Jack was dead.  I mean, the whole point of Ennis's journey was to carry out Jack's instructions and hopefully find his way back to an alive-Jack.  The comfort with which he seems to carry out the affair with Rob is just really striking.  That's why I thought Rob would be "it" at the end (and a new Jack-like figure).  I sort of thought that Jack's package/notes/gift would end up being something metaphorical... like giving Ennis the gift to move on and be comfortable with himself.

If Rob was sort of given Jack's blessing to engage in an affair with Ennis... then that's *really* interesting.  It seems that Ennis's journey was all about Ennis getting over many of his "demons" (Earl, his parents' death, etc.).  And, it seems that Ennis's denial of his sexuality (even a good way through this story) was definitely one of his "demons."  If Jack wanted Ennis to come back to him only if he'd worked some of his issues out... it seems that coming to terms with the fact that he's gay would be a big component of this.  Maybe having had an affair with both Tom, Rob and Jack was enough for Ennis to really face this about himself.

Anyway, I thought this was just a lovely story and written in such a unique way.
:)
