Now, that's very interesting. I suppose I'd been uncritically assuming that Muslims were more well-read in the Koran than many so-called Christians are in the Bible, but apparently that isn't always the case.

Sheriff Roland:
Feel I need to chime in ... not in defense of what the Koran might or might not say on the subject at hand with regards to men & women's rights & responsabilities, but rather on the assumed 'fact' that many (most?) Afgan's aren't able to read the Koran and therefore can't know it. They can be well 'versed' in their book without being able to actually read it. Like most Christians, their understanding of their teachings comes from other's interpretation of their holy writings. Don't mean one has to be literate to have thoughts. Oral traditions exist in virtually all cultures. Sure the potential for independent interpretation is increased by actually being able to read, but the bible belt tells me it ain't always the case.

openin up a can a worms here, aren't I?

No prob Sheriff. but I was repeating what Afghani women said, so I guess they should know more than most what their husbands and menfolk do or don't know.

I can't comment on what Afghani people do or don't know about the Koran. But I have observed that among American Christians, many have heard the Bible says this or that -- and will go around telling you so -- without really knowing what it does say. The oral tradition here does not seem to be very precise.
