What I like about the wardrobe choices in relation to the scene is that it is as if Jack picked out all his spiffiest stuff to go claim his prize. Nodamean, Vern? That trophy belt buckle, the laced leather jacket, a nice new hat, a shirt that's his very best color... Makes it all the more poignant when he's cruelly rebuffed. Stabs me in the heart every time when Ennis says, "I don't know what to say..." I've heard those exact words before, spoken in just that tone, in a similar situation. Brings it all back every time. I think if I hadn't, it would still stab me in the heart. But maybe the knife wouldn't feel like it was also being twisted.
OK. I promise that'll be the last sick metaphor from me for the day.

Whoa! I just noticed something else about that shirt, going back to look at it again. It's *not completely solid*. OK, I know this really belongs in one of our symbolism threads, but it's only one of two times Jack doesn't wear a solid shirt (the other being when he goes back to Aguirre's trailer the next summer looking for Ennis). And it's another time when he's in layers. For protection. He's going to claim his prize, but feeling vulnerable about it to begin with. Of course, the way he says, "I had to ask about 10 people in Riverton where you had moved to" in that tentative, head bowed down, eyes looking up almost imploringly way belies that, too.
Aw, Jack. Honey. :'(
