Heath looks dreadful. Teeth and hair from hell. Though his role is good,-  really really good, yes, - his acting is great - I’m so shallow that I can’t get past his looks in this one. And the story of the film – about a group of more or less troubled kids who revolutionized skateboarding - is interesting but would have been better served in a shorter and purely documentary version.

Funny -- there IS a documentary version of this exact same story, "Dogtown and Z Boys," directed by the same guy who wrote "Lords," Stacy Peralta, who was one of the skateboarders.

DaZB is one of two movies I own the DVDs of, the other being BBM!  That's because my then-9-year-old son gave DaZB to me for Mother's Day (and someone else recently gave me a BBM DVD). I actually like the fictional LoD a lot better (don't tell my son).

I love LoD, partly because of Heath, who really nails the part of the aging alcoholic surfer dude who gets the skateboard revolution going but eventually loses his piece of it. I saw it before I saw BBM, and Heath's appearance wasn't of great concern to me in those days. The other actors are also good (Emile Hirsch, who recently starred in Sean Penn's "Into the Wild" is one of the kids). I'll admit, though, that my fascination is partly due to the fact that the movie really captures the flavor of my formative years in the mid-70s (Stacy Peralta was born 9 days after me, according to Wikipedia), and the soundtrack is the Music of My Youth.

I so agree with you on Monster's Ball.  If I would ever watch it again, I'll just watch until the end of Heath's part, but it was such a heart-wrenching scene, I still have to gather up the courage to watch it again.

When I first saw Monster's Ball (a few years before BBM), I was like "Hmm. Iffy movie, but that Heath guy was really good!"

That's so funny!  I have a friend visiting for a few days and on the weekend he wanted to watch Monster's Ball (he just discovered Billy Bob, or something).  After Heath's "exit" scene I got up and told my friend that he was on his own for the rest.  I don't hate the film like you guys seem to, it just that once Sonny is out of the picture, it's all downhill for me.

Has anyone listened to the commentary track with the Director and Writers?   The writers keep saying that because it's been six years they don't quite remember why they did this or that.  Not very impressive at all.

I don't think I hate it, I just don't want to see it again...LOL. I didn't see it in the theater. I saw it a few years later because of McMurtry seeing Heath and saying, "That's Ennis!" But I remembered all the talk about how "great" it was (not in my book) and how "terrific" the sex scene was. Like Mikaela, I just thought it went on and on.

Since it was hard enough to get through one time, I wasn't about to watch the commentary, and now I am glad to know I didn't miss anything.
