One thing I like about the background of the shot with Ennis in the alley, besides the clouds, is the little lonely tree. The angle of the tree echos the angle of Ennis's back.

Yes, and Ennis usually is as unbendable as a tree, rooted in the soil, but not this day in Signal.

I wonder what Heath would have thought, had he learned that several years after he acted that scene, a group of people would appear there during their Brokeback pilgrimage, and several of them would actually re-enact his traumatic alley scene to perfection and in the exact same spot!? I hope he'd take it as the compliment it was.
Yep, I've seen the Alberta Pilgrimage video! :)

Poor Ennis. :-\
I have to re-quote Ang Lee once more:
With that description of his bleeding fists, and the fact that the Thanksgiving fight scene apparently saw Heath pretty beat up too, - doesn't it seem that the Ennis role got unusually physical? I guess I'm so used to reading about special effects, stunt doubles, sound effects.... it's normally all just a carefully executed illusion. A lead actor really getting injured and pummeled to this extent during takes surely isn't common? Heath truly did give his all as Ennis, and the benefit was all ours. Sigh. :-* :-\ :'(

Heath gave his all as Ennis, but also as Dan in Candy. I remember reading that during a very traumatic scene in a shower he was punching and flailing around so badly he got a black eye.
He is seen with the black eye in the final scene. No make up was needed. I cannot believe we have lost such a gem
I also remember an interview where Heath said he liked to follow a serious movie with a more lighthearted one.The idea being that he had some respite, after having given his all in serious roles.I don't think he did anything half measures.
