Thanks for the image, Paul!

Sonja, they're crispy onion strings, and they get used to make green bean casserole, which happens to be the dish that is on the label of the container.

We were asked to get non-perishable items, so I'm hoping the people who get these supplies have access to any perishable items needed for the recipes.  Of course they can just heat and eat the veggies, so that serves the general purpose.

Sason:
Oh, I see! Not as bad as I thought, lol.

When I read 'fried onions', this is what came to mind

and I thought "do Americans really need to buy that in cans??"

Sason:
Well done you, Chuck, for donating all that food.

On a different note, isn't tin and pewter the same metal?

Front-Ranger:
Good question! Pewter once contained lead but modern pewter is tin with other metals added to strengthen it. So it's an alloy.

serious crayons:
This is how I buy my fried onions.

They also come in garlic-pepper flavor. And this company makes a similar product with jalape?o peppers, which I sprinkle on things to give them a slightly spicy crunch. They also make a dill-pickle version, which I bought but did not love. Could be good on a burger, though!
