"L" is Lola (1981)
« Reply #5080 on: September 26, 2008, 11:19:01 am »

Synopsis:   Ten years after the war, West Germany's market economy is booming. Into an unnamed city that's rife with corruption comes a new building commissioner, Herr von Bohm, committed to progress but also upright. He's smitten by Marie-Louise, a single mother who's his landlady's daughter. Von Bohm does not realize she is also Lola, a singer at a bordello and the mistress of Schuckert, a local builder whose profits depend on von Bohm's projects. When von Bohm discovers Marie-Louise's real vocation and looks closely at Schuckert's work, will this social satire play out as a remake of "Blue Angel," a visit of Chekhov to West Germany, or an update of Jean Renoir's "Rules of the Game"?

"M" is My Dinner with Andre (1981)
« Reply #5081 on: September 26, 2008, 01:21:48 pm »

IMDB:Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, apparently playing themselves, share their lives over the course of an evening meal at a restaurant. Gregory, a theater director from New York, is the more talkative of the pair. He relates to Shawn his tales of dropping out, traveling around the world, and experiencing the variety of ways people live, such as a monk who could balance his entire weight on his fingertips. Shawn listens avidly, but questions the value of Gregory's seeming abandonment of the pragmatic aspects of life.

« Reply #5084 on: September 27, 2008, 10:33:00 am »

IMDB: Bewitched Penelope finds it hard to find love, for having pointy little ears and a snout for a nose that will make any suitor turn tail and run, but what's worse is her over protective, aristocratic parents that must find her perfect match for happiness. This is a wonderful hide and seek fairytale of the ugly duckling that gives great performances from all. This heart-warming love affair with enchantment and magic will lift your hearts and fulfill your wishes. Make a date with Penelope and find that love is more than skin-deep.

"U" is Ulee's Gold (1997)
« Reply #5089 on: September 27, 2008, 05:43:23 pm »

IMDB: I just love this film. I like the Faulkner-like story set in the South. I like the subdued, yet brilliant performance by Peter Fonda. I like the detailed shots of the art of beekeeping. The music...I just love this movie. The story centers around Ulee, a stoic beekeeper and honey maker. Ulee's son is doing time in prison for his part in a robbery. His son's wife is a junkie who walked out on her three daughters, leaving Ulee to raise them. Although Ulee is not an emotional man, you sense he loves his grandkids and son, he just has trouble showing it. Well, the mom comes back, his son's partners in crime come back and Ulee realizes that his simple life is in great peril. This is a wonderful family film and I think a performance by Fonda that is very personal. I highly recommend it.
