double HUMPH!!!

Daniel:
Well, at least I know its emotionally compelling. :0)  I have to thank my valiant audience of two.

Seriously though, I feel a strange calling to write these things... And once I get into the groove of writing them, its hard to get back out again until I reach the end. Which is normally about ten pages later on my word processor.

Ah well. All the better for a more involved and provocative storyline.

“AS THE WORLD TURNS”

TELEPLAY TO AIR JAN 2, 2008

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE SNYDER'S FARMHOUSE.

HOLDEN IS STARING AT NOAH SUSPICIOUSLY.
EMMA IS COOKING AT THE STOVE.

NOAH:
Mr. Snyder.... I need to talk to you.

HOLDEN:
Is Luke alright?

NOAH:
Yeah, he's fine.
He doesn't know I'm here though.

HOLDEN:
Where is he?

NOAH (CONFUSED BY HOLDEN'S DRILLING QUESTIONS):
What? He's – He's at my place,
watching DVDs. I told him I
forgot something here.
Can we talk someplace?

NOAH SWALLOWS NERVOUSLY.

NOAH (CONT'D):
I guess what I have to say
is for you both.

HOLDEN:
All right. Let's talk out on the porch.

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

NOAH IS SITTING ON THE LOVESEAT AGAIN,
FOCUSING ON A DISTANT POINT.

HOLDEN IS STANDING A FEW FEET AWAY, HIS ARMS
CROSSED OVER HIS CHEST.

HOLDEN:
So, what'd you want to tell me?

NOAH:
Last night... Luke and I... we were....

HOLDEN LOOKS AT NOAH STERNLY:
Intimate?

NOAH NODS:
Yeah.

HOLDEN SIGHS, RUNS A HAND THROUGH HIS HAIR, SITS DOWN
ON A NEARBY CHAIR:
Well, he's practically grown up now...
knew this day would come eventually.

NOAH:
I just want you to know, Mr. Snyder.
I – I felt like Luke wanted me to
hide it for some reason.
He said you wouldn't understand.

HOLDEN:
I don't pretend to understand everything, Noah.
But some things I'm pretty good at figuring out.
And I know Luke cares for you.
He's in love with you.
And I know from experience, that can get you hurt.
And thats not something I want to watch
happen to Luke.

NOAH:
I know that, Mr. Snyder.
I care for Luke as well.
He's made my life more wonderful
than I ever thought possible.
I would never do anything to hurt him.
I just hope you realize that.

HOLDEN:
I know you wouldn't do anything to
hurt him intentionally.

<FADE OUT>

<FADE IN>

NOAH:
What do you mean?

HOLDEN SIGHS:
Just.... be careful.

NOAH:
Done.

HOLDEN LOOKS AT NOAH,
NOTICES HE IS STILL TENSE.

HOLDEN:
What else is on your mind?

NOAH HALF-LAUGHS:
Just... Luke.

HOLDEN WAITS FOR NOAH TO CONTINUE

NOAH (CONT'D):
Luke is one of the most
honest people I know. It's
one of the reasons I-I
like being around him so much.
But this morning....
We tried to convince his grandma
that nothing had happened.
That's a side to Luke
I didn't know he had...

HOLDEN:
My mom is very much set in her ways,
and I'm sure that Luke knew that.

HOLDEN SMILES, CONT'D:
If it had been anyone else, he
might have told us more. But grandma...
he's a little overprotective of her.

NOAH NODS, FINALLY UNDERSTANDING.

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: NOAH'S DORMITORY APARTMENT

LUKE IS CUDDLED WITH A PILLOW, WATCHING OLD
MOVIES ON NOAH'S TV.

!KNOCKING AT THE DOOR!

LUKE PAUSES THE DVD WITH A REMOTE THEN
GETS UP TO ANSWER THE DOOR.

JASON:
Hey! Is Noah here?

LUKE LEANS ON HIS CANE A BIT:
Umm, no. He went out. He'll be back in a little bit.

JASON:
Oh cool. I borrowed his notes last semester and
thought I had returned all of them.

JASON HANDS NOTEBOOK TO LUKE.

JASON:
Hey, you're that guy he hangs out with all the time.... Luke, right?

LUKE SHRUGS, SMILES SHEEPISHLY:
That would be me.

JASON:
Cool. I'm Jason.

LUKE AND JASON SHAKE HANDS.

JASON:
What happened to your leg?

LUKE CHUCKLES:
Oh, thats a long story.
Let's just say someone tried to hurt me,
and this is what happened.

JASON:
Oh.

LUKE:
It's gotten better, though,
I used to be in
a wheelchair.

JASON:
Why'd they try to hurt you?

LUKE DOESN'T HESITATE TO RESPOND:
Cause I'm gay.

<FADE IN>

SCENE: THE SNYDER FARMHOUSE PORCH

NOAH:
I don't know.
I mean its like Luke is
still afraid of something.

HOLDEN:
I think he's afraid of being
alone.

NOAH:
No, I mean beside that.
I think he's afraid of
hurting other people's feelings.

HOLDEN NODS, SLOWLY:
Yes, I can see that.

NOAH:
That's not going to work.
I mean, if you're going to be honest,
don't you have to be honest all the time?

HOLDEN SIGHS:
There are many things we tell children
in order to protect them. And then we keep
doing it for the rest of our lives.

NOAH NODS:
Yeah... I guess that's true.
It's like a great conflict between truth and protection.
Like there are some things I wouldn't tell
Natalie or Faith because they wouldn't understand.

HOLDEN:
Luke's the same way.
Except sometimes I think
he's too honest.

NOAH:
I know. I remember when I asked
him not to tell Maddie about us.
He was completely opposed to the idea.
But he was right.

HOLDEN:
Yeah, sometimes it turns out all right.
But you still need to be
careful with what you say to whom.
If its not someone you know well enough
to know their reaction, maybe you
should keep certain things hidden.

NOAH NODS:
That makes a whole lot more sense.
But I think Luke's a romantic.
Honesty just about always wins out.
I kind of like that....

<TRANSITION>

SCENE: NOAH'S DORMITORY APARTMENT

JASON AND LUKE ARE STANDING AT THE DOOR.

JASON:
Oh... I didn't realize.

LUKE:
Oh sorry. Didn't mean to weird you out or anything.

JASON:
No-no, its cool. So you and Noah are....

LUKE (SMILING):
Yeah, you could say that.

JASON:
Okay. Well I have to go. It was nice meeting you, Luke.

JASON LEAVES QUICKLY. LUKE CLOSES THE DOOR, SHAKING HIS HEAD.

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

SCENE: NOAH'S DORMITORY APARTMENT.

LUKE IS WATCHING TV, STILL HUGGING NOAH'S PILLOW.
THERE IS A SWELLING
OF ORCHESTRAL MUSIC AS IN THE END OF OLD
MOVIES.

NOAH ENTERS JUST AS LUKE STOPS THE DVD.

NOAH:
Hi.

LUKE SMILES:
Hi... So I don't get this movie.

NOAH:
What about it?

LUKE:
Rick was lying – about Ilsa?

NOAH:
Right. It was the only
way to get Ilsa to leave with
Laszlo.

NOAH SITS NEXT TO LUKE AND GENTLY
PRIES HIS PILLOW FREE.

LUKE GIVES UP THE PILLOW WILLINGLY:
But why? I mean if Rick loved Ilsa.
Why did he make her go?

NOAH LOOKS AT LUKE
WITH A DEEP, THOUGHTFUL EXPRESSION

NOAH (SLOWLY):
To protect her.

NOAH SLIDES AN ARM AROUND LUKE AND PULLS HIM CLOSER.

LUKE:
But what if she didn't want protection?

NOAH:
I would say its not up to her.
Just because two people are in love
doesn't mean they give up their independence
completely.

LUKE THINKS ON THIS FOR A MINUTE.

LUKE:
I guess you're right.
I mean, if you're in love
with someone, why would you
try to change them?

NOAH SHRUGS:
Because we've been
raised to believe the illusion
of a happy, blissful relationship.

LUKE LOOKS UP WORRIED:
Well, that kind of relationship is possible.

NOAH:
It's possible, but you have to work at it.
That's kind of a recurring theme
in all these old movies.

LUKE:
I've only seen one, so far.

NOAH:
Yeah, Casablanca. What'd you think?

LUKE:
Well its a really great story.
I just don't understand why so many people
love the movie.

NOAH:
Its the way it was filmed, the music,
the lighting. It all fits together
really perfectly.

LUKE SHAKES HIS HEAD, SMILING:
I don't get it.
But you know what?

LUKE LEANS AGAINST NOAH'S SHOULDER AND NOAH RUBS HIS
CHEEK AGAINST THE TOP OF LUKE'S HEAD.

NOAH:
What?

LUKE SIGHS HAPPILY:
It doesn't really matter
that I don't get it.
I like the fact that you get it.

NOAH NOTICES THE NOTEBOOK ON THE TABLE:
Did someone stop by?

<FADE OUT>

<COMMERCIAL>

<FADE IN>

LUKE GETS UP AND GRABS THE NOTEBOOK. HANDS IT TO NOAH.

LUKE:
Yeah, some guy.. Jason.
Said he borrowed some notes from you.

NOAH:
Oh, yeah from that history class.
Was he surprised to see you here?

LUKE:
Well I guess at first, but
then he seemed to understand.

NOAH (CONCERNED):
Understand what?

LUKE:
About us.

NOAH (WORRIED):
You told him about us?

LUKE:
Not exactly - well only in passing.
He asked directly.
I wasn't going to lie to him.
Is there a problem?
I thought you were out to your friends?

NOAH:
Well, yeah. I mean, the ones I know a bit.
But I don't really know Jason,
so I'm not certain how he'll respond.

LUKE SHRUGS:
He seemed fine with it.

NOAH:
So did my father.
And look how well I knew him.

LUKE:
Noah, not everyone in the world
is out to get us.
They may not want to hear
all the details of our relationship,
but that doesn't mean
they want to keep us apart.

NOAH LOOKS UP AT LUKE SADLY:
My father did.
And I think there are more people
out there like him.

LUKE TRIEST TO COMFORT NOAH:
And maybe there are.
But right now, what's important
is that you be who you are,
even when they're shouting in
your face.

LUKE SMILES AND SITS DOWN NEAR NOAH AGAIN,
LOOKING IN HIS EYES.

LUKE (CONT'D):
You've done it before... Noah.
Just keep doing it.

<FADE OUT>

<END>

injest:
HUH? so Luke is all protective of his grandmother...doesnt' want her to know he done did the wild thing with Noah (right there in the room next door) but tells some random STRANGER!!??

OY!!

Is he NUTS!? Good lort!!

It is not for HIM to tell Noahs friends and acquaintences....

argh!

I see NOTHING but trouble now...nothing!

 >:(

Daniel:
Hmmm.... yeah, I can see that trouble myself...

But yeah, the fact that Noah and Luke are together means something entirely different for Grandma Snyder and Luke and Noah's peers.
I think that's one of the reasons why Luke wants Noah to be more affectionate in public.
