Happy THanksgiving!

Front-Ranger:
Thanksgiving seems to be over all too soon. Meanwhile, my fridge is still groaning with goodies packed in tight. Fortunately I've agreed to make turkey vegetable soup for the unsheltered this week and maybe I can sneak some side dishes in alongside. There seems to be an extra week before December starts so pardon me if I continue to celebrate turkey day until then.

That sounds yummy!  :D

Front-Ranger:
And just like that, it's the big Thanksgiving week in the U.S.! As in almost everything, our Canadian friends had the good sense to hold their holiday earlier, with more separation between it and Christmas or Hannukah. And this year we don't even have a week of November afterwards to buffer the onslaught of the holidays.

I like to decorate for Thanksgiving with a harvest theme, pumpkins (I prefer white ones), corn cobs, wreaths, etc. But lately I have a tendency to have a pause in decor until at least the first week of December. The only thing in my house right now is a basket of fresh apples. I'd like Monday to be a lazy day, but not this week. Must go out to the regular grocery and the farmer's market to get the last of the provisions. This year, I'm just doing the stuffing, a side dish or two, and an apple pie. My daughter is baking two turkeys. One tomorrow for use in gravy, stuffing, etc. and another one on Thursday for display Norman Rockwell style.

Thanksgiving is also a Brokie holiday! It seems like every year, the holiday is rebranded. The latest account I've read is in the book 1491 by Charles Mann.

So, my burning T-giving question is, why is the word "pound" abbreviated as "lb"????

southendmd:
"When the ancient Romans referred to weight, they used the term libra pondo. Libra meant "weight" or "balance scales," and pondo meant "pound." They eventually shortened the phrase to just libra, which they abbreviated ?lb."

Front-Ranger:
Thank you Paul. That clears it up!
