What a way to start the day! I'm so glad my friend in Germany is ahead of me preparing the way! I think I'll get my snow boots and prepare a treat for myself and my kitty!
Just a few years ago, I figured out that St. Nikolaus had transmogrified itself into Santa Claus in the U.S.. . . . or did it?

Yes, he did. And I'm proud that Santa Claus was made popular in the US thanks to one of our own! Our/your current picture of Santa goes back to a painting of Thomas Nast, a caricaturist from Landau who emigrated to the US. Landau is the next town from me and it's where my children go to school. In Landau, there's the annual Thomas Nast Nikolausmarkt (Advent market).
So in a twisted way you could say that 'we' (as in people from my area) invented Santa Claus. ;D ;)
The name Santa Claus has still much resemblance to the Dutch Sinterklaas, which is the Dutch version of Nikolaus.

Oh, how neat! I didn't know Nast was an immigrant from Germany. :D
He was a very important political cartoonist, too.
