Daniel:
It's what you say to a horse to get it to slow down.

OMG  OMG  OMG . David, you can't imagine how hard I'm laughing here. Literally laughing out loud. Very loud. Thank you for these  :-*.

? ? ? I don't understand this one. I know who Ronald Reagan is and I assume there's an airport named after him? But I still don't get what's funny about this one  :-\

They named what used to be Washington National Airport after Ronald Reagan in a fit of misplaced patriotism. And as Daniel noted, "whoa big fella" would be a way to get a horse to slow down. I actually think this might be a line that Ronald Reagan said in one of his movies. I believe he made a western or two.

This is something that actually happened to me on a flight. Puerto Ricans tend to clap after a landing. We clap as if it is a the end of a good play. So, applauses are a fairly common thing on flights from New York City to San Juan. Well, I was with my sister en route to San Juan from New York a few years ago, when we landed and nobody clapped. According to my sister, the pilot said joking of course something like this: Welcome to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, temperature is blah blah blah, and since nobody clapped after my marvelous landing, you won't be getting off right on the gate but on the runway. Of course, we have bus services that will take you to gate 4. Thank you for flying American Airlines. When he was finished, everyone started clapping of course.

*There was a problem with the gate and the plane could not be take to it. We had to get out far away, and take a bus.

Germans do that, too. I never understood this. Last year I gave a lady in the row in front of me a good chuckle about it. My daughter asked me why I didn't clap. I answered: "Why should I? He's just doing his job. Do you give me applause every time I drive you safely to your sports training?"

Puerto Ricans clap to celebrate a safe landing, that we made it alive.
