While in Chicago, we went to a Map Exhibition at the Field Museum. It was very interesting...and I learned about the FLEMISH cartographer, mathematician, and scientist, Gerhard Mercator, who invented the cartesian system of cartography known as the Mercator Projection. When he came up with it, in 1585, everyone thought is was crazy, but it is the number one system used today to accurately draw a round earth on a flat piece of paper.

we finally had a "cold snap" here in northern California, and all the leaves fell off the trees at the same time!  Fall fell! in one overnight!

a little tough to get used to, shivering suddenly...!  I guess it's time for more warm socks!

Ah, a famous Belgian, there aren't many of those around. Did you know that he launched the word 'atlas' for a collection of maps in a book.
